The Police High Command yesterday in Abuja has said they never arraigned Nyanya suspected bomber, Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche who was recently freed by a court of law, but said the case against him was bungled and regrets that the media misled the public for so long. A press statement released by the command after the cut.

A statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CP Emmanuel Ojukwu read: “The attention of the Nigeria Police High Command has been drawn to a most misleading media report that charges filed by the Nigeria Police at the Federal High Court Abuja, were struck out for lack of diligent prosecution in respect of the suspected terrorist Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche.

“It would be recalled that the Department of State Services (DSS), that had intelligence on the Nyanya Bombing and was investigating it, made a formal request to the Nigeria Police to assist in extraditing one Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche to Nigeria from Sudan, through the Interpol channel of which the Nigeria Police is well versed.

“It was at this stage and for this reason that the Nigeria Police Force filed charges against the suspected fugitive Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche, based on information that he fled to Sudan.

“The filing of charges against the suspect is a legal procedure to enable the Nigeria Police formally request Sudanese authorities to grant Nigeria’s extradition request in respect of the suspected fugitive.

“For the records, copy of filed charge(s) against a fugitive must be appended to documents in support of extradition request made to the host country, which in this case, is Sudan.

“These facts were made known to the court when it insisted on the production of the accused even before his extradition to Nigeria.

“Following Ogwuche’s extradition which the Nigeria Police accomplished successfully, the DSS, obtained a court order to remand the suspect for an initial period of three months in line with the Prevention of Terrorism Act and also liaised with the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation to undertake his prosecution.

“For the record, at no time did the Nigeria Police arraign the suspect in court for terrorism related offences. Moreover, the purported prosecution/arraignment by the Police could not have happened as the Police could not prosecute a suspect it never arrested, never investigated nor had in its custody.

“It is therefore grossly erroneous, mischievous and malicious to impute lack of diligent prosecution to the Police. The Nigeria Police Force is manifestly and positively committed to the will of Nigerians to rid the nation of violent crimes like terrorism. Many of our officers have paid the supreme sacrifice on account of this.

“The Police while respecting the rights of the media to publish, however appeals that due diligence be observed to ensure that misleading information is not disseminated to the reading public

Obasanjo Is Not In A Position To Criticize Jonathan- Fayose

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose, today attacked former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his criticism of President Goodluck Jonathan, Punch reports.

Fayose spoke at the Yoruba Progress Summit, held at the Oduduwa Hall of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State. Fayose, who was impeached as the Ekiti State Governor in 2006 during the reign of Obasanjo as President, said the ex-president was corrupt and was not in a position to criticise Jonathan.



The governor alleged that Obasanjo shared a huge amount of money to people he did not name during his attempt to go for a third term as the country’s number one citizen.

He said, “If you give your blood to Obasanjo, he will not support you. He doesn’t want anybody with independent mind.

“You (Jonathan) did not level Borno and Yobe the way he levelled Odi; for that, he will not like you. We know how he was when he came out of prison and how rich he was when he was leaving office.”



Fayose said his wife, who predicted his return to power, had told him that Jonathan would win the 2015 poll.

May Senators dey vex! The level of impunity in the land under Goodluck Jonathan has reached an all time high and the heads of the security agencies are trampling on the laws, disrespecting lawmakers.

A source in Abuja told OluFamous.Com that the illegalities wont be allowed to continue, there will be some serious consequences and it has started. Already 63 senators have now signed up to the plan to impeach President Jonathan in the upper legislative chamber as of Thursday.

One of the arrowheads of the move to remove Jonathan in the Senate showed a Punch correspondent the list containing the signatures of the 63 senators who have signed the impeachment notice.

In fact, eight PDP senators are among the Senators that signed to impeach Jonathan.

There are 109 members in the Senate.

A top APC senator from North-West zone told Punch that the lawmakers’ major grouse was the President’s handling of the economy and political affairs of the country.

The senator cited poor implementation of the national budget since 2011, alleged high level of corruption and “gross disregard” of the legislature at both the federal and state levels as topping the list of lawmakers’ anger against Jonathan.

Asked if he realised the process of impeachment could be tedious and cumbersome, the senator said:

“We know and we are prepared to show the President that we have responsibility to the people and the nation in general. We are prepared to lay the impeachment notice anytime from next week. Meetings are already being held.”
Senator Ibrahim Musa (APC Niger North) confirmed that there were moves by some members of the Senate to initiate impeachment proceedings against the President.

PUNCH learnt that the impeachment move against the President had really gained momentum with the APC senators mobilising themselves to carry out the exercise anytime from next week.

Tambuwal asks Court to send Police IG to Prison for Contempt

Rough times are ahead for the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba. The Speaker of the House of Reps, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, has asked the Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, to try The IGP and send him to jail for disobeying an order made by the court.

The IGP had last week ordered police officers to take over the National Assembly complex to “prevent thugs from taking over the complex” and apparently the thugs are Tambuwal and other members.

Tambuwal told the court that by the IGP’s refusal to recognize him as Speaker of the House when he appeared before a committee of the House on Monday, the IG constituted himself “to be the complainant, the judge and the executioner in a matter where a restraining order has already been issued by the judge.”

Justice Muhammed, ruling on the exparte application, ordered Tambuwal’s counsel to serve the motion on notice on IGP Suleiman Abba’s lawyers for immediate response...

In a suit filed by Hon Tambuwal over his position as the speaker after he defected to the APC, Justice Ahmed Muhammed who is trying the case, had ordered that all parties should maintain the status quo, implying that Mr. Tambuwal stays put on his seat as speaker till the court takes a decision on the matter.

Relying on two grounds, Tambuwal, on Friday, represented by Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said the IG should be charged for contempt after he directed his men to stop the plaintiff from gaining access to the premises of the National Assembly despite an earlier order by the court that all parties must maintain the status quo pending the determination of the substantive suit seeking interpretation of his status as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Justice Muhammed has adjourned the matter to December 1, 2014, for a ruling.

The Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has shunned an invitation by House of Reps Committee on Police Affairs, an appearance requested by members of the committee to explain the reason for the deployment of heavily-armed security operatives at the National Assembly, as well as the firing of the tear gas which prevented House members from gaining access into the chamber.

The meeting, which was scheduled for 10:30 a.m., could not commence until noon, when the Deputy Inspector-General of Police Operations (DIG), SL Wakama arrived, standing in for the IGP.

In a letter from Abba on his absence, the IGP apologized and said that he could not make it to the meeting because the invitation was received on short notice.
But the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Usman Bello Kumo, while reacting to the letter, insisted that the Inspector-General of Police must come in person, and dismissed the DIG.

Adjourning the meeting, the committee maintained that IGP Abba would be given another chance to do the needful by appearing before the committee on Wednesday November 26th at 2:00p.m.

It is believed that the IGP is interested in appearing before the Senate but not the House of Reps and this is set to cause another round of crises as the Honourable members are set for a showdown.

Ayo Fayose: There was a governor: Misbehaviour on steroids
“Mr Governor, you are misbehaving”. Those were the words that forced Ayo Fayose to sink himself into a sofa. That was in 2004. He was then the governor of Ekiti State. It was an informal meeting in the office of the then Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN. There were just four of us – Akin Osuntokun, MD of NAN, Fayose; Segun Adeniyi, then Editor, ThisDay on Sunday; and I. I was the Political Editor of Vanguard at the time.

It was meant to be an interactive session and we actually interacted.

“Mr. Governor, you are misbehaving”, were my words in response to Fayose’s patronizing comments about the position of Adeniyi on how he writes his column and the principles behind every article...

Fayose had tried to package Adeniyi, claiming that, as his friend, the editor would not take him on or be critical of him in his regular Thursday back page column. To this, Adeniyi responded that his true friends know that friendship is just another currency in the realm of altruism; that he writes to uphold the truth and that when his friends misbehave, he writes about them in a very critical manner.

Looking a bit surprised by Adeniyi’s retort, Fayose, the usually smart and fast talker, quickly said: “Okay, as your friend, I will not misbehave”.

It was this claim by Fayose that he would not misbehave that made me jump at him in a split second: “Mr. Governor, you are misbehaving”.

As if cold water had just been poured on him (in all honesty that was really a cold response), Fayose grabbed the arm-rest of the closest sofa to him and sank himself into it.
He then attempted to rationalize why he would always remain the essential Fayose, telling of his grass to grace story and the assault on his sensibilities by some leaders in the state who just could not come to terms with the fact that he was their governor.

A very touching story though, the reason for my response to him was that just a couple of months earlier, at another session, a few of his friends and some journalists had tried to appeal to him to tone down his seemingly over-charged disposition which was denying him of the necessary applause that should come his way in view of some strides he was making as governor – especially his appeal to the common man. He was having some altercations with traditional rulers and he had been counseled to allow tempers cool. Barely hours after the session, Fayose jumped into another quarrel with yet another traditional ruler, further heightening tension in the state. Prior to that meeting in Abuja that fateful afternoon, even Fayose himself knew that he had needlessly worked himself and his state into a frenzied situation.

But all these were in 2004.

Mind you, his sojourn ended in his impeachment as governor of Ekiti State. Whether the impeachment followed due process or not is for the courts to decide. But Fayose never challenged his impeachment in court, suggesting that he either agreed that he deserved to be impeached because of his serial acts of misbehavior; that he left everything in the hands of God Almighty; or that, perhaps, he was just fed up with the whole drama and wanted to walk away.

Whatever his reasons, he never challenged it.

Just 10years after, in a very rare fateful manner, Fayose has gotten a second chance as governor of the same Ekiti State.

Even before he was sworn-in, he had boasted severally that whatever he will do is what he will do. Governor-elect speaking!

Yes, he has a right to do whatever he decides to do like all mortals – ‘A man’s got to do what a man’s got to do’.

When the late great man of letters, Chinua Achebe, wrote his book, THERE WAS A COUNTRY, it was with a view to reflecting on years of waste, broken dreams and the ruins that is the nation Nigeria today. From that title, we dare say, THERE WAS A GOVERNOR.

This piece would not concern itself with the enormous powers at his disposal as a state governor.

This piece would not also concern itself with all the accusations and counter accusations that are at best partisan and at worst trumped up.

What this piece would concern itself with, like all men of good conscience, is the madness – yes madness – that happened last week at the Ekiti State House of Assembly.

For a state that touts itself as ‘FOUNTAIN OF KNOWLEDGE’, happenings in the state lately suggest that knowledge has taken flight. And in the absence of knowledge for which people suffer and perish, idiocy becomes the order of the day.

A Supreme Court judgment in 2006 had made it clear that the quorum for any legislative gathering refers to the quorum as reflected in the total number of elected members.
But because the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, leadership in the country had already set a template as was the case during the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, election last year, that 16 was greater than 19, the PDP legislators in Ekiti State took misbehavior a notch higher, albeit, egregiously.

In an assembly of 26 members, seven of them, using the instrumentality of the Ekiti State Governor’s Office as alleged by Speaker Adewale Omirin, were escorted to the assembly by IGP Ibrahim Abba’s boys. The seven members voted and impeached the speaker and his deputy and elected their own Speaker.

One Samuel Ajibola, who defended the action of the members, explained that the seven members had more than enough to carry out what can best be described as a debauchery.

It is established that to impeach the Speaker, you need two third majority. Ajibola said the entire seven members were in support of the impeachment of Omirin and, therefore, had more than the two third majority needed.

Meanwhile, a Supreme Court judgment given in the case between Rasheed Ladoja, then impeached governor of Oyo State, and the state House of Assembly and Alao Akala, had established that the quorum and two third majority stipulated by the Constitution referred to the quorum of the entire members of the assembly and the two third majority referred to the two third of the entire elected members and not just those at a sitting. This is information which should constitute knowledge.

The Ekiti-7 ignored this and launched their expedition in misbehavior. If it had all started and ended there, with Fayose maintaining a dignified silence, excuses could still be made for him.

But on television, when asked to review the events regarding the impeachment, he endorsed it.

He welcomed the development and even said he has already recognized the ‘new Speaker’.
He then added that he owed nobody any apologies.

This was 10 years after the charge, ‘Mr. Governor, you are misbehaving’.
Most people don’t get a second chance in life. Fayose had gotten his.
More profound was the nature of his victory against all odds.

However, psychologists would need to burrow deep into the inner workings of the mind of a man whose actions almost always elicit public opprobrium and yet, he persists.

Fayose need not look further to understand that he runs the risk of running himself aground if he persists along this destructive path, if he pauses, and takes a look at the dwindling fortunes of Mario Ballotelli, a footballer. It was Jose Maurinho, the Chelsea coach, who told a story of how delinquent conduct could ruin a footballer’s potentials. His team, Inter Milan, was playing a match and needed to win. He was already suffering the non-availability of some key players, At half time, Maurinho called the very precocious and combustible Ballotelli to a corner and pleaded that he should avoid committing any foul having already received a Yellow Card – mind you, Milan was already a man down. Once the second half commenced, just within five minutes, a rush of blood to the brain caused Ballotelli to commit a silly foul; he was carded and sent off.
According to Maurinho, “I could not believe it”.
From that point, Ballotelli’s career continued to dip.

Therefore, if Fayose’s approach to governance, an approach that is at once rambunctious and sometimes shambolic, can be described as a form of defence mechanism against a real or perceived complex, his friends, associates and family members would need to calm him down and counsel that he should not sacrifice his natural grassroots connectivity potentials on the altar of rascality and a behavioral pattern that appears to be running on steroids.

For the Boko Haram insurgency to be defeated, the Nigerian government would have to do what it should have done long ago, sort out its governance, the Economist reports online.

According to the article published this week, the Islamic extremist group called Boko Haram has grown in stature and gruesomeness in Nigeria’s north-east since 2009 despite international support for the Nigerian government.

The report stated that the crisis in the north-east needs to be seen in the context of generally rising criminality in Nigeria, stating that kidnappings for ransom are rife: celebrities and clergymen are plucked off the street in daylight.

It added that hundreds of people are killed every year in land disputes, thieves siphon off as much as a fifth of the country’s oil output in the Niger delta.

However, the report informed that the only way to defeat insurgency in Nigeria is for politicians should concentrate on building institutions, such as a fair-minded police force and a competent health care system, rather than filling their pockets in cooperation with criminals.

Only then will the government be able to build a decent army and channel enough resources to the poor in the north-east.
