When the body of an elderly homeless man was discovered in a discarded cardboard box behind the back of a fast food joint in downtown Kingston, Jamaica, coroners had a problem: Who was this mysterious old man? No identification had been found on the body; indeed, the only possessions the old man had on him were a faded photograph of the Houses of Parliament in London, a dented tin containing a small quantity of marijuana and a battered old guitar.

bob3
The restaurant where the remains were found.

With no leads to go on, the authorities turned to Jamaica’s national DNA database. When the results came back from the lab, the coroners couldn’t believe their eyes.

“I thought it must be a joke,” says Jacob Chambers, the chief coroner. “My colleague came running into my office waving a piece of paper in the air. ‘You’re not going to believe this,’ he shouted. I told him to calm down and explain what all the excitement was about. When he told me, I couldn’t believe it.”

The results of the DNA test reveled that the old man police had discovered behind the fast food restaurant was none other than reggae superstar … BOB MARLEY.

bob2

“I stared at the results wide-eyed,” Chambers admits. “My jaw dropped to the floor. This had to be a mistake.”

It had always been presumed Bob Marley had died from cancer in 1981 as he made his way back to Jamaica by plane from Germany. But if that was the case, why was his elderly body lying on a slab in a downtown Jamaican morgue? Chambers could come up with only one explanation:

“Naturally I concluded somebody was playing a joke on us, and told my assistant to label the body as ‘persons unknown’. This would mean it could be cremated by the authorities and the death filed as that of an unknown male in his late sixties to early seventies. But it was then that things got really weird.”

bob1

That afternoon, the coroners office was visited by men in sunglasses. They were wearing dark suits and called themselves ‘government officials’. They confirmed that the body was indeed that of the late reggae legend, and that Marley’s death had been faked back in 1981 on the request of the star who had grown tired of all the attention he was getting and just wanted to live the quiet life of a street busker in Jamaica, earning enough for food, reggae tapes for his Walkman and cannabis. The Jamaican government agreed to go along with Marley’s plan, on the understanding that they would receive the royalties from his most successful album, Exodus.

bob4

Chambers claims the ‘government officials’ removed the body of Marley, along with the DNA results and the coroner’s report into the death. They then left, warning Chambers and his staff to keep quiet about the matter or they would face – in Chambers’ words – ‘serious consequences’.

“I decided I couldn’t stay silent about this, despite having no evidence because the government took it all away to a secret location somewhere,” says a defiant Chambers. “Bob Marley did not die in 1981, and I’m damned if I’m going to keep that a secret just because some shady officials told me to. The truth must be heard, even if that means the government losing the royalty rights to Exodus, which is a fantastic album by the way.”

Wailing masţurbators in the APCankerworms should please argue with their ancestors. Tenk

With post-election euphoria subsiding, the enormity of the challenges that lie ahead for new Nigerian President Muhamadu Buhari and his administration have now become abundantly clear. The president inherited an economy crippled by an oil price slump, a treasury which, in his own words, is “virtually empty”, along with mounting currency pressures, rising inflation, and a host of structural issues which will not be remedied in the short term. The president’s honeymoon period will be a short-lived one, as he faces the urgent task of devising a sustainable strategy to guide Nigeria through its current economic crisis.

The already challenging economic environment is now being aggravated by elevated levels of policy inertia. Despite being elected in March and inaugurated two months later, President Buhari has still not appointed a cabinet; the latest news indicates that a cabinet announcement will happen only in September. This has been viewed in a disappointing light as the president was expected to be a more decisive leader than his predecessor. The result has been a marked reversal in the positive sentiment which characterised the post-election environment, most notably amongst the business community. The stock market rout over the past few months reflects these dynamics. However, as one commentator in Nigeria noted, “one campaigns in poetry but governs in prose”, and this is particularly true of the current predicament in which President Buhari finds himself.

Buhari’s critics call him “Baba Go Slow” and argue that the current policy inertia was an inevitable development arising from the complexities and internal politics within the young and ideologically fragmented All Progressives Congress coalition. However, his supporters argue that the delays are indicative of a deep desire to make the right appointments and have urged patience as he attempts to set up the foundations for economic progress via credible and technocratic appointments. Either way, a great deal of political capital hinges on the September announcements which cannot come soon enough for a country that is currently in policy limbo.

As a president who campaigned on a message of change, especially security and corruption, the big elephant in the room remains the economy, and clarity in this regard is sorely lacking. There are currently more questions than answers around what the policy impulse will be, clouding the outlook for both fiscal and monetary policy.

On the fiscal side of the equation, questions centre on how the authorities intend to plug revenue shortfalls. Already, the president has indicated that the removal of fuel subsidies are off the table, a proposal that many, including the International Monetary Fund, have argued would provide substantial relief to the fiscal accounts. A supplementary budget was widely expected to be announced once the new government assumed office, however, this too has not materialised, creating further uncertainty.

In the current context, austerity measures are critical and boosting revenue through improving tax collection, eliminating payments of wasteful subsidies, and rebalancing the disparity between recurrent expenditure and capex will be some of the key priorities to tackle. With the government’s ‘anti-corruption’ stance many hope that blocking leakages will help plug the revenue gap. However, recovering money that went missing will take time, while the new administration is not guaranteed that those funds are still available to recover.

The Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) continued efforts to defend the currency reflect a desire to maintain the ‘status quo’ until more clarity emerges on the fiscal policy direction. However, delays in naming a finance minister have complicated matters, and concerns have arisen over how long the CBN will be able to maintain the current policy stance. Thus far, the currency has been artificially maintained, drawing harsh criticism for “spontaneous” monetary policy from various quarters, including The Economist magazine.

The imposition of new forex controls by the CBN - restricting the supply of US dollars to importers of a wide range of products - has helped to stabilise the country's reserves which became severely depleted. However, the latest round of forex controls, together with those already implemented, only serve as a temporary solution. Parallel market rates currently range between N220-230 to the US dollar, illustrating a wide disconnect between this level and the official rate of N197 set by the CBN. Ultimately, with imbalances in the Nigerian economy growing and the currency still considered over-valued, the currency will come under further pressure. It will be difficult to sustain capital controls at current levels especially when considering that loosening restrictions is seen as a prerequisite for the country to remain in the JP Morgan Emerging Market Bond Index. Against this backdrop international investors are likely to hold off from investing money into the economy until the expected devaluation takes place. A removal from the index may well result in a sharp sell-off of foreign-held Nigerian fixed income assets and thereby put further pressure on the currency.

According to analysts in Nigeria, businesses are battling to cope with the current realities on a practical level. Economist Tunji Andrews believes business remains in the dark on the nation's economic direction. “Whilst they cannot abandon already existing operations, it's also difficult to embark on new or expansionary projects; so as not to fall on the wrong side of policy.” This downbeat view is echoed by Abuja-based commodities trader Archit Tiwari, who argues that the business environment has been extremely tough since the start of the year. “With the fall in the value of the naira and then the new CBN rules, sourcing forex has become very tough. Since everybody is unsure about what levels the naira will touch, importers are sitting on stock and not selling it. Exporters too are finding it difficult to adapt to a fluctuating conversion rate. In the agriculture sector, there were high hopes from the government, but ministers have not yet been appointed and there is still no clarity on what policy direction will be taken. With many states not paying wages on time, demand is very low too.”

With nothing that President Buhari or his administration can do to change the oil price, Nigerian authorities will need to focus on reform policies to address fiscal weaknesses and deterioration in the country’s forex buffers. However, delays in the formation of the cabinet, and a lack of tangible progress on the security front, have begun to chip away at the enormous goodwill the president inherited upon his inauguration. As the country battles chronic energy shortages, tighter credit conditions and a generally unfavourable economic climate, it is imperative that a clear direction for economic reform is forthcoming. With the new administration still getting to grips with the policy puzzle, investors have adopted a “wait and see” stance with the hope that their cautious optimism is not unfounded. However, the risk of any positive momentum dissipating is very real unless the country’s policy vacuum is addressed timeously.

PhonesLeaked Screenshots Shows Specs Of Microsoft's Yet To Be Released Surface Phone by talktimi(op): 11:04am On Aug 18, 2015
After losing over $3 billion (£1.9 billion) on its acquisition of Nokia, it would seem logical that Microsoft was getting out of the smartphone game altogether — but not so.

Leaked screenshots obtained by WMPowerUser reportedly show the specs of a new Surface phone code-named "Juggernaut Alpha" that, according to the source, will be branded as Surface Mobile and will launch at the end of 2015 or early on into 2016.

The new handset will feature a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440×2560. (For reference, the iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen with a resolution of 1080x1920.)

Powering the Surface phone's screen is an Intel Atom x3 (SoFIA) CPU and 4GB of RAM, more than enough to make the phone work seriously fast. Storage options would start at 64GB and go up to 128GB leaving out the lower end 32GB or even 16GB options that some manufactures choose to sell.

Interestingly, the Surface phone could also include support for Microsoft's Surface Pen technology which has been popularized by the Surface tablets and isn't available on any smartphone currently. The Galaxy Note series of smartphones from Samsung have long included the S-Pen for drawing, taking notes and so on and it would seem that Microsoft is aiming at capturing some of the productivity market by including stylus support.

microsoft surface tabletMicrosoft
Microsoft could bring its stylus to the Surface phone.

Software-wise, the Surface phone would run Windows 10 Mobile, the latest iteration of Microsoft's mobile operating system efforts that works alongside Windows 10 and could, developers willing, enable apps to run across both platforms without any extra code.

Wireless charging and USB Type-C could also be included alongside a 21 MP PureView Zeiss 6-lens main camera and a 8MP Zeiss Wide-Angle front camera.

We reached out to Microsoft for comment on this story and will update this article if we hear back.

PoliticsRe: Why Nigeria’s Former Megacity Governor Raji Fashola Is Hitler-like – By Dr. Pere by talktimi(m): 8:10am On Aug 18, 2015
During the Jonathan years, things in Nigeria were really so bad and desperate from the top that other violations at senate and state level were often overlooked or easily absorbed. Billions were being looted, thousands were dying. It was not so easy to focus for long on the atrocities of many other public officials. However it is obvious that as Nigeria repaired the head, proper scrutiny has been restored cross board and we see the Senate, several governors and other civil servants being finally held to account. Nigerians had held our breath and rallied together, ignoring contact with goats and pigs to get Jonathan and company out of Aso rock.

In August of 2009, Leadership reported that Governor Fashola of Lagos deported 160 destitutes, men, women and children with various disabilities to Kaduna. Enduring indescribable hardship the 160 were dumped on Kaduna-Abuja expressway.

In August of 2013, either 14 or 70 Igbo destitutes were deported from Lagos and dumped once again on the outskirts of Anambra state. There had been an earlier similar dumping of Igbos in 2012.

In December of 2014, SaharaReporters gathered that another 70 destitutes were carted out of Lagos and dumped this time on the outskirts of Kano. These were indigenes of Niger, Kaduna, Kebbi, Jigawa Zamfara and Sokoto states. It is puzzling why they were all dumped at the door of Kano state and if and how they were expected to relocate to their states or if Kano was supposed to be a happy receptacle for the Lagos rejects.

Over 3000 Nigerians have been deported from Lagos since 2009 with many dumped in Ogun and Oyo states. Deportations of destitutes and the disabled are usually not by identity with mixed state indigenes being dumped at any suitable state outskirt.
Wrestling with pigs – Fashola

Wrestling with pigs – Fashola

These findings are troubling.

The attitude of governor Raji Fashola is not only illegal and unconstitutional, it is repulsive, draconian, ungodly and grossly inhumane.

I can only compare the class and elitist audacity and degree of oppression of such behavior to Nazi Hitler. The behavior of Lagos state is like locking people in concentration camps, feeling you are pure blood and they are scum. Providing homes and welfare for these downtrodden was not an option for the Lagos state government; it had better things and official’s personal websites to build and upgrade with its money. They were to be deported and dumped!

According to section 41(1) of the 1999 constitution “every citizen of Nigeria is entitled to move freely and to reside in any part thereof…”

The rich or poor, able or disabled cannot and must not be deported from any state. According to Ecowas regulations, Nigerians should not even be deported from neighboring countries.

When publicly pressured to apologize for the 2013 Igbo incident, Governor Fashola refused. Tongue in cheek he scolded the Igbos for “not developing their states.”

A straight back indignant governor Fashola said,“I apologize if my (deportation) actions were misunderstood… But I think the basic issue Aka Ikenga must address is why people feel compelled to immigrate from one part of the country to the other? Is it the case that some lack the resources to develop or perhaps some parts are endowed with enormous resources but not adequately managed? How can development be so difficult from the zone that has produced people like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Alex Ekwueme, Ike Nwachukwu, among others? As political storm gathers, there are contact spots but like in football, contact spots have rules. Those who are victims of our shortcomings as professionals in and out of government should not be pounced. A day like these calls for deep reflection about issues of our loyalties. Are we more Igbo than Nigeria or we are more Nigeria than Igbo?”

Compared to the policies of Fashola’s Lagos, several states including Sokoto gave indigenship to state foreigners who had resided in the state for a few years. Such residents would be permitted to contest for state political office.

Bulldozers and container load deportations was the fate of the destitute and disabled in Lagos through the years. Only God knows what has been the fate of the poor and disabled that Lagos dumped at outskirts of other states over the years.

How did Lagos get away with these grave atrocities? Here again we blame 16 years of PDP, the leadership vacuum in Aso rock and an inebriated and colossally bloated Senate, hungover on billions of naira they in no way merit.

While some say Fashola did so and so good (usually in projects for the affluent), what they fail to understand is that it is not the good done but the bad done that warrants retribution. A public official swears to uphold the constitution. Jonathan handing over as Kukah eulogized is his job, his constitutional obligation. Looting billions is not. As a medical doctor, I am not forgiven when I amputate one wrong leg simply because I had fixed 1000. For the “good” they do, which I simply regard as them doing their job, Nigerian officials in particular are actually over compensated (monetarily).

As President Buhari and Attorney Osinbajo, SAN, execute their “no looter left behind” program, ensuring the robbers of the past years, ala goats and their co-conspirator, Coscharis, website IT firm, Africapitalistic cabal and other private partner pigs are properly rewarded for their indulgence, we must demand that several other violations of Nigerians are investigated and perpetrators are reprimanded. State sponsors of terror, administrators who have been flagrantly abusive of power, etc must all be held to account for terrorizing and killing Nigerians. The process of sanitization has obviously just begun.

PoliticsUncertainty Dampens Optimism Of Boko Haram Releases by talktimi(op): 5:06pm On Aug 17, 2015
On August 3, the Nigerian army reported it had freed as many as 178 captives from the clutches of Boko Haram. This was the second mass liberation of the group’s hostages in as many weeks—a cause for celebration for new Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, whose election platform included a firm commitment to ending the Islamist insurgency. There are, however, a number of details that cast doubt over the official accounts of the supposed breakthroughs, and whether they represent a turning point in Nigeria’s military campaign against Boko Haram.

According to military spokesman Colonel Tukur Gusau, the most recent hostage release was secured through the “besiegement” of a Boko Haram rebel encampment near the Borno State settlement of Aulari, 40 miles south of the state capital Maiduguri. Those rescued included 101 children, 67 women, and 10 men, while an unidentified military commander was also reportedly captured.

On July 28, at least 30 Boko Haram captives were similarly freed from captivity during an army counteroffensive on Dikwa—a town in eastern Borno State that has traded hands between militant and government forces at least three separate times.

These developments followed a resurgence in Boko Haram violence since Buhari’s inauguration on May 29, claiming the lives of more than 600 Nigerians. Adding to Buhari’s concerns, the upsurge in violence came at a time when counterinsurgency operations launched by the regime of former president Goodluck Jonathan finally appeared to be paying dividends, with the Nigerian army dislodging the insurgents from territory they ostensibly controlled in the rural northeast. In light of this, the timing of the recent liberations seems highly convenient for Buhari. Coupled with the tendency of Nigerian authorities to skew national political narratives when under pressure, should these claims be believed?

It would certainly not be the first time Nigerian authorities have provided false details around Boko Haram captives. For example, just three days after the April 15, 2014 abduction of nearly 300 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok—the subject of the Bring Back Our Girls campaign— the Nigerian army claimed to have rescued all of the abductees. However, they were quickly forced to retract this statement when family members of the hostages refuted the claims.

Attempts to verify the exact number and identities of the recently liberated hostages have been complicated by the government’s relocation and rehabilitation process. Former hostages are generally transported to congested and disorganized internally displaced persons camps dotted across the country. From here, they are sent to a secretive rehabilitation center where they receive supportive psychotherapy to allow their reintegration into society. Although an understandable course of action to both protect victims and facilitate their convalescence, the clandestine repatriation has only fueled speculation regarding the progression of the fight against the extremist sect.

In light of the lack of testimony from captives, there are significant doubts as to how the Nigerian government was able to successfully free them, when counterinsurgency operations of this nature have frequently led to significant hostage casualties in the past. In May 2015, for example, Boko Harm militants executed a large group of abductees as the Nigerian military encroached on their positions in the Sambisa Forest. The sect, or at least its purported affiliates, have similarly executed foreign kidnap victims when challenged. This includes the 2012 execution of British and Italian hostages in Sokoto. A year later, the same fate awaited a group of expatriates kidnapped by Boko Haram’s suspected offshoot Ansaru in Jama’are, Bauchi State. Although these incidents do not preclude the Nigerian’s armies successful liberation of Boko Haram captives, it does indicate that these undertakings are occurring at significant risk to civilian hostages. Or does it?

While high risk rescue operations may well be securing the release of hundreds of rebel captives, could there be another explanation for the recent liberations? It is certainly conspicuous that they coincided with the Buhari’s claims that he was open to negotiations with the insurgents, specifically regarding the release of kidnapped civilians.

Questioned on whether his regime would negotiate with Boko Haram to secure the release of the Chibok girls, Buhari said, “If we are convinced that the [Boko Haram] leadership that presented itself can deliver these girls safe and sound, we’ll be prepared to negotiate what they want.” This was in stark contrast to his pre-election stance, in which he denied his regime would enter into any negotiations. Members of Nigeria’s military brass have similarly supported the possibility of dialogue, though there has yet to be any official acknowledgment that it has taken place, and it has certainly not been cited as a contributing factor to the recent freeing of captives.

Had it occurred, however, dialogue of this nature would not be unprecedented. Writing a month after the Chibok events, I detailed how the Nigerian government and Boko Haram were “no strangers to the bargaining table” and had brokered a number of reciprocal hostage release agreements on previous occasions. In one of these incidents, civilian captives were “rescued” by Nigerian security forces a day after the government pledged to release detained Boko Haram members.

If Boko Haram had made similar demands in return for the release of the recent hostages, they might have proven unpalatable to many in Nigerian society, and countered the narrative that Buhari was prioritizing a hard-nosed military response to the insurgency.

The lack of transparent and verifiable information from the recently freed captives and Buhari’s regime invites considerable doubts of this nature. While efforts to safeguard innocent civilians subjected to Boko Haram’s brutality shouldn’t be criticized, the government continues to fuel mistrust among a population whose cooperation will be needed to provide for Boko Haram’s ultimate defeat.

The Portuguese's decision to substitute his captain rather than Gary Cahill was pointed and Sunday's drubbing at the hands of Manchester City poses serious questions

GOALCORRESPONDENT COLUMN By Peter Staunton

The most significant outcome of Chelsea's wholly-deserved 3-0 defeat to Manchester City was that Jose Mourinho declared, in public, that John Terry was not up to the job of marking Sergio Aguero.

Mourinho reasoned that the Argentine sharpshooter was too canny for Terry during a first half in which he scored one goal and could have had at least two more. A younger, faster player would have to be fielded instead.

Never mind that it was Gary Cahill whom Aguero was running rings around for the most part having cleverly pulled onto the right-sided centre back whenever he could.

"I have to decide who is the fastest player in our defensive line so when you are going to play with a high block the fastest player has to be on the pitch," Mourinho said.

Never before had Mourinho substituted Terry. He has been up against most of the world's best forwards and few could be said to have given him a genuine run-around.

"The point was not to take John out, but to put [Kurt] Zouma in," Mourinho continued. "I want to have my fastest player on the pitch and not on the bench. I know they are going to play counter attack and long balls to Aguero."

Why Terry and not Cahill?

"That is a good question."

Why not start Zouma in the first place?

In any case Chelsea conceded twice more with Zouma on the field; Mourinho reckons Chelsea were the better side in the second half. There are not many who would agree with him. He argues that his decision to replace Terry was vindicated in that Chelsea had most of the play after the break. Warped logic.

Mourinho, though, had found himself another scapegoat.

"He was not dancing in the dressing room and he was not having a bad reaction," Mourinho said of Terry at half time when he took delivery of the news that he was to be subbed. "He did what everybody does. The manager says this guy comes in and that guy goes out and they all understand."

Terry - captain, leader, legend, as the sign reads - now just like "everybody" else. Just like Petr Cech, just like Juan Mata. Just like those players whose usefulness to Chelsea and Mourinho expired. He has ushered a good number of Chelsea legends out of the door in the three summers he's been back at the club with Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard among them too. Terry endured. He is still, comfortably, the best centre-back in the league and maybe the world. To pick on him for a collectively disastrous first-half display was, for Mourinho, pointed.

A 2-2 draw against Swansea was, perhaps, even more than they deserved on matchday one. After this 3-0 hammering, it is the worst shape Chelsea have ever been in after two games under Mourinho. Usually, they win both their first games. Before this season, only in 2006-07, when losing to Middlesbrough on Teeside had they failed to take six points out of the first six on offer in the Premier League so something is amiss.

They are five points behind City, perhaps fatally so even at this early stage. Five points is five points no matter what the stage of the season.

Before the game and eager to gloss over what had been a fractious engagement with the press on Friday due to the Eva Carniero affair, Mourinho conceded to the press that his Chelsea team were, at this stage of the season, a little underdone. He gave his team a month off over the summer and played only three matches before the season's competitive football began. They have been well off the pace set by Manchester City and were brutally exposed here.

He has been picking what is on paper his strongest XI. Mourinho is one of those coaches whose substitutes bench actually looks like a substitutes bench. There are his 11 favourites and then the rest. It does not appear that he is capable of freshening up what is already on the books.

Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill were two players whose form dipped more than most at the end of last season. Those tailspins have continued into this. Cesc Fabregas, at the ripe old age of 28, looks about ready for the Middle East or MLS given the manner in which he is dragging himself around elite football pitches.

Mourinho has not, yet, been able to bring in the players he wants but the signing of Abdul Baba Rahman could yet spell trouble for either Cahill or Ivanovic.

"He is a left back he can compete with Azpilicueta," said Mourinho before adding: "At the same time Azpilicueta can compete with Ivanovic for the right-back poitison so he replaces Filipe Luis in the balance of the squad."

He is still courting John Stones, whom he sees as eventually replacing Terry. The day when Terry needs to be replaced, in Mourinho's eyes, could come around sooner than many had expected.

"I don’t know if you ask many questions to Benitez, Andre Villas-Boas, Di Matteo, to the ones that never played him," Mourinho said. "I am the one you shouldn’t ask because I am the one who played John every game, made him captain, recovered him from a difficult situation with other managers and I had the right to say I want Zouma on the pitch."

To be enduring such a poor start is alien for Mourinho; in his career he has never been at a club whose output was so shambolic. He has a job on his hands turning this lot around any time soon.

To endure such a start and fall out with his medical staff and then drop his captain at half time of a crucial league game is abnormal. The pattern of Mourinho's career is well woven. He is known for his itchy feet three years into any project. A new contract extension took a lot of people by surprise despite Mourinho's constant claims that he is with Chelsea this time for the long term.

If that is indeed the case then he would do well not to take on Terry. No player is bigger than any club but Terry does more than most to challenge that thinking.

He was asked at the end of the press conference whether these players could win him the Premier League again and maybe the Champions League. "Yes," he said quickly and walked away. He could not think of any convincing words to back it up.
