National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has admitted that President Muhammadu Buhari is no longer popular like he was during the 2015 general election. “All governments worldwide in between terms lose some degree of popularity; no question about that,” he told Punch. “We are having harsh economic times, no question about that and that does not increase the popularity of any government. It only diminishes it to some extent. What is different is that, in our case, in spite of the harsh economic realities, the people still have full confidence, trust. “I think that is the proper word, in President Buhari, that he will do his very best to improve their lot and I think the proof of that was the reaction to the threatened strikes by the labour unions. You can see that even though people are unhappy, they refused to come out because they understood. “They are in pain but they understood why the pain was there and they trusted the President that he was doing everything within his power to ameliorate their pain. So yes, there is a lot of grumbling all over the place, but also there is a lot of trust in Mr. President”, he added. On internal crisis in some states, including Kano, Bayelsa and Kogi, Oyegun said APC was attending to each of them. “In vevery case, we are making progress. Bayelsa should be concluded in a matter of weeks. Kano is basically a personality thing and we’ve got everybody to sheathe their swords for now. “And I think that has happened. Kano has cooled off. We also have issues in Kogi State which we are also attending to. That is the only way you know a government that is in power. “If we were in opposition, there won’t be skirmishes in these states because there would be nothing to skirmish over but since we are in power, people are still struggling for relative importance within the system with an eye on tomorrow. “These things are normal, they are expected but we’ve developed that habit of democratic consultation and reconciliation and it is working”, he added. http://dailypost.ng/2016/07/09/buharis-popularity-has-dropped-apc-chairman-oyegun/?utm_source=nnd&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=nnd Cc: lalasticlala and mynd44 |

Abuja – Following the myriad of security challenges facing the country particularly the resurgent militancy in the Niger Delta, the federal government yesterday appointed a new Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI) for the armed forces. He is Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Saliu Usman. He takes over from Major General John Saduana Davies, who had been on acting Capacity since January this year, when the former CDI, Air Vice Marshal Monday Morgan retired. According to the Armed Forces Statutes, the position of Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI) which is the apex in the intelligence community is rotational among the services. With the Army and the Navy serving their terms of three years, it fell to the Airforce but AVM Morgan who got appointed when President Mohammed Buhari assumed office in 2015, was caught up with (ROD), ‘run out date’ and had to retire. Major General Davies was therefore appointed on acting capacity until a suitable CDI whose recommendation was approved by President Buhari was appointed. Air Vice Marshal Usman, was until his appointment, the Director of Air Intelligence at NAF HQ. He had served at the Defence Intelligence Agency as the Director of Intelligence before he was appointed Director of Air Intelligence. In his career, he was an instructor at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji and the Defence Intelligence School, Abuja. He was also a onetime Security Officer to a former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Isaac Alfa (rtd). Speaking while taking over at DIA, AVM Usman expressed gratitude to God and to President Buhari for the appointment promising to work in harmony with the services to ensure peace and security for the nation. “Eight months ago, I was posted from here (DIA), to the NAF headquarters. I never knew that I will come back this way. I have taken it as an act of God. My doors will be open to all and I will be fair to all and I will carry everybody along”, he told officers and men of the Agency. “I want to urge all of you to be up and doing because we are in challenging times. Let us put integrity into all that we are doing. Let us consider DIA as one family and let our actions speak for us” he said. The CDI congratulated Major General Davies for his services to the nation noting that “during the short time he spent as Acting CDI, he took the organization to a very high level adding, “I will continue from where he stopped. Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun on Friday said the ongoing restructuring and reforms in all the state-owned tertiary institutions were not aimed at retrenching workers as being speculated. Aregbesola said this at the inauguration of a N140 million e-Library and N34.4 million ultra-modern lecture hall at the state College of Education, Ila-Orangun. The governor, who described the speculation as baseless, said the idea behind the restructuring exercise was not to witch-hunt but to improve the quality of lecturers. He said his administration would not do anything that would inflict pains on workers and residents of the state. “The restructuring is aimed at bringing up the quality of the lecturers. “ I must also add that the government has no intention of witch-hunting or victimising anyone for his or her religious, political or ideological leaning. “You will all agree that there have been many innovations in education and those still teaching with the knowledge they acquired 20 years ago have fallen behind time. “We must also improve the quality of our teachers, if we want to improve the quality of education we are giving to the young ones. “This puts to rest the false, unfounded and malicious speculation that the government is closing down these schools. “What we are trying to do is to ensure everyone is qualified and fits into the bigger picture of the education we are providing in the state,” he said. In his address, the Provost of the institution, Prof. Isaac Olayinka Oyewole, said that the new library would accommodate 2,000 users at a time. Oyewole said with the new e-library, the institution could conveniently boast of housing a modern digital library unit. Earlier, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Mr Niyi Akande, said the council was working toward transforming the college into a degree awarding institution.
