EXCITEMENT AS JEV FLOORS AKUME There is excitement at the Benue Peoples House at the moment with INEC's declaration of Rt Hon Emmanuel Orker Jev as winner of the Benue North West Senatorial seat. Jev of the PDP polled 157, 726 to beat incumbent and APC leader in the state, Senator Dr George Akume who got 115, 422 votes. |
Senator George Akume has drawn the ire of some of his constituents under the aegis of Jemgbagh Youth Alliance (JYA). The Benue group has berated the senator for constantly bad-mouthing the state publicly, vowing to retire him from politics in next month’s elections due to his recent actions and utterances. Senator Akume who is the vice chairman of Buhari/Osinbajo campaign organisation for the north, on Friday, January 4, described Makurdi, the capital of Benue, as the dirtiest state capital in the country. Akume made the comment at the official flag-off of the re-election campaign of Governor Simon Bako Lalong of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Rwang Pam stadium in Jos. In a statement sent to reporters on Saturday, January 5, by president of the group, Comrade Ternenge Bendega, the JYA described Akume’s action as, “another shameful outing by the former Benue state governor whose current actions are similar to kicks of a dying horse.” Comrade Bendega said: “Having lost his hold on resources of Benue state, Senator Akume has taken his trade to Plateau state where he hopes Governor Lalong will patronize him. He has adorned the regalia of a career godfather. Having lost his position as political godfather in Benue, he has taken his bid to Plateau state. Akume’s quest for free money is insatiable. Lalong can’t satisfy him. Ortom could not meet the Zone B senator’s unquenchable appetite for free money. A man who has never owned a kiosk to run as a private business and depends solely on government funds all his life cannot be satisfied by even 10 governors. If Lalong is in doubt, he should ask Dr Gabriel Suswam. “Akume’s statements during the campaign flag-off in Jos were more of an indictment of himself than Governor Ortom. A man who governed Benue for eight years and made little or no attempt to turn Makurdi to the dream city he now talks about has no moral justification to criticize his successors. In other states, former governors, even if they disagree with their successors don’t make their states laughing stocks publicly like Senator Akume has done since his relationship with Governor Ortom went sour. Other former governors bless their states not curse them with tags such as ‘dirtiest state capital.’ “This is the second time in two months that Akume has bad-mouthed Benue state publicly and we feel that even if the senator is constantly under the influence of intoxicating substances, he should know when not to speak ill of his state. We in Jemgbagh have taken our stand to retire Senator Akume from politics come next month’s elections and nothing can change that. Senator George Akume is a disgrace to Jemgbagh, Zone B and Benue state in general. We condemn in strong terms Akume’s utterances in Jos and demand a public apology from him.” AKUME MUST GO HOME TO ANUNNE AND REST

vanguardng Jan 22, 2019 Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue on Tuesday in Makurdi swore in Acting Chairmen for six local governments, following the suspension of the affected area’s chairmen by the State House of Assembly. Reports have it that the local government bosses were suspended by the legislators on Monday, Jan. 21, on the request of Ortom. Ortom, in a letter transmitted to the legislators, had accused the local chairmen of “gross misconduct”. Their suspension is for an initial period of three months. In a brief speech at the ceremony, Ortom cautioned the acting chairmen against sharing government monies to “elders in their domains”. “The era of sharing government money to elders is now over; government money is meant to touch the lives of the people positively. “Be prudent in handling local government finances; do not embezzle the councils funds, money is not everything, do not be in a hurry to grab it. “If you grab government money, you will get into trouble. The Bible says money is the root of all evil. Wait patiently for God’s appointed time for you to make genuine money and not ill-gotten wealth,” he warned. He also admonished Benue residents to eschew violence, especially during and after the forthcoming polls, and urged the chairmen to ensure absolute peace in their respective areas. Responding on behalf of her colleagues, the acting chairman of Makurdi Local Government, Mrs. Lym Goon, appreciated Ortom for the appointments, and promised to do everything possible to make him proud. She also promised to work toward the success of the PDP in the forthcoming general elections.
