>>>>>>>https://techcribs.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/download-20.jpeg Gatwick airport, the UK’s second largest airport, was closed for most of Wednesday night and Thursday morning after it received reports of two drones flying nearby, reports The Guardian. The airport initially had its flights suspended at 9PM on Wednesday evening after the drones were spotted, and although it briefly reopened at 3am, it was forced to close once more 45 minutes later after the drone flights resumed. As of 9:15AM, Thursday morning, flights to and from the airport remained suspended. As well as preventing any flights from taking off, the suspension means that numerous inbound flights had to be diverted to other London-area airports including Luton, Heathrow and Stansted, while other flights were forced to land in Paris and Amsterdam. In total, 760 flights containing 110,000 passengers were due to either take off or land from Gatwick over the course of Thursday. >>>>> https://techcribs.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/download-20.jpeg Responding to the incident, the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority said that “it is totally unacceptable to fly drones close to airports and anyone flouting the rules can face severe penalties including imprisonment.” Currently, the law states that flying within 1km(0.6 miles) of an airport is illegal in the UK without explicit permission, and if caught, the pilots of Gatwick’s drones could face up to five years in prison according to the Aviation Minister Baroness Sugg. Although drone users in the US have been required to register their drones since 2015, similar rules for UK owners aren’t due to come into effect until November 2019. https://techcribs.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Screenshot_2018-12-20-06-35-16.pngHyundai has developed a fingerprint recognition system which allows drivers to unlock and start their cars without the need for a conventional key. It is due to be launched in China during the first quarter of 2019 and will appear first on the Hyundai Santa Fe SUV. Drivers will register their fingerprint to the car before using the system. Fingerprint scanners in the door handle and on the car’s start button will then recognise the driver when used, granting access and starting the engine. https://techcribs.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/p1148275.jpg Multiple drivers can register their fingerprints and Hyundai says that the system will automatically adjust the driving position, mirrors, climate control and steering settings according to each individual user. https://techcribs.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/download-16.jpeg Days after a pedestrian was killed by the uber cab, aleaked email from an employee warned Uber’s bosses that its self-drive cars were involved in multiple crashes. Robbie Miller, operations manager for Uber’s self-driving trucks, wrote to the firm’s top executives saying the cars were “routinely in accidents”.https://techcribs.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/100583868_466db40e-aac1-4883-af51-69bbd871d89b.jpg This was partly down to faults with the technology and partly because of the “poor behaviour” of operators, he said. Apple claims it has found a software solution to the court injunction which recently banned some of its older iPhones from being sold in China. A news drafted from The verge below show all in full details. https://techcribs.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/image005-384x288-1.jpg In a statement to Reuters the company said it would be issuing a software update “early next week” which it believes will address “the minor functionality of the two patents at issue in the case.” If the courts agree, this update will mean that Apple can continue to sell the iPhones affected by the ban, which include the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, and X. Apple was recently found to be infringing upon two of Qualcomm’s patents in China, which were reportedly relating to resizing pictures and managing applications. When the ban was first announced, Apple claimed to CNBC that iOS 12 — the most recent version of its software — does not infringe on those patents. If true, then issuing an update to force the affected iPhone models to update to iOS 12 could be enough to reverse the decision. Apple has already filed a request for reconsideration in China over the ban. https://techcribs.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/download-14.jpeg However, this update is unlikely to bring the dispute to an end if Qualcomm, which Apple claims wants a settlement, has its way. Just yesterday the chipmaker requested a further injunction to ban sales of the iPhone XS and XR, which are Apple’s latest iPhone models sold with iOS 12 pre-installed, the version of the software that Apple claims doesn’t infringe upon the patents. The dispute between Apple and Qualcomm in China is just one part of the global legal battle between the two companies. Qualcomm has previously attempted to ban iPhones in the US, and has also claimed that Apple stole its source code and shared it with its rival Intel. Apple meanwhile, has previously claimed that Qualcomm has been dramatically overcharging for the use of its patents.https://techcribs.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/images-9.jpeg Given the bad blood that now exists between the two companies it seems unlikely that Qualcomm will be satisfied with a simple software fix, but it will ultimately be up to the Chinese courts to have the final say. This news was referenced from theverge. Source>> https://techcribs.com.ng/apple-plans-iphone-software-update-to-reverse-chinese-ban/

Telstra, in partnership with Lexus Australia and the Victorian government, announced on Friday that it will be trialling new car safety communication technologies . www.nairaland.com/attachments/8317219_telstracv2xtechnology_png8026cd8ac88f914f59fa51bbdabe41db The Victorian government backed the trial, titled Advanced Connected Vehicles Victoria, by awarding a AU$3.5 million grant to support the development of vehicles with connected and automated technology and safety features. The trial will deploy two Lexus vehicles equipped with Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology, and use a specialised link on Telstra’s mobile network allowing the vehicles to communicate with each other beyond the distance of short-range radio. According to a blog post by Telstra chief technology officer Hakan Eriksson, “C-V2X is technology that lets cars talk to each other, and the environment around them, via 4G mobile networks, and via direct short-range wireless links”. “For instance, if a trial vehicle ahead performs an emergency brake, it will send this message to a V2X-equipped car following — potentially before a forward collision radar or driver notices the event. In these situations, mere milliseconds can make a huge difference.” www.nairaland.com/attachments/8317226_images15_jpeg_jpegae88086c12dcb82a59e4407c891bbff6 The car safety systems that will be trialled using C-V2X includes emergency braking alerts, in-vehicle speed limit compliance warnings, right-turn assist for vulnerable road users, and warnings when surrounding vehicles are likely to violate a red light. Previous trials in Australia of car safety communication technologies had only used Wi-Fi 802.11p for short range communications. The new trial will make use of short range 5.9 GHz radios based on advanced 4G cellular V2X technology, and will have a pathway and compatibility to future 5G solutions. Earlier this year, Telstra CEO Andy Penn told ZDNet that Telstra was looking to push autonomous vehicles in Victoria. His comments followed the Australian Communications and Media Authority in January unveiling new regulations that supported the rollout of driverless vehicles in Australia. With Australia moving towards “smart” vehicles, Eriksson said that “[Telstra] are investing in developing cooperative intelligent transport technologies that will make road users safer by helping cars communicate with the things around them”. Over the last couple of years, Telstra has increasingly placed more resources towards the driving market in Australia, having conducted autonomous car trials in South Australia and acquiring GPS and telematics fleet-management solutions provider MTData last year. “The strength of our 4G network and future 5G network will allow faster adoption of technologies such as this — ultimately helping make our roads a safer place,” Eriksson added. Telstra last month achieved the first live 5G connection in Australia which used a commercial 5G chipset and a smartphone that were made in partnership with Ericsson and Qualcomm. The telco also announced this month that it connected its first 5G customer, which used the new HTC 5G Hub that was unveiled last week.

Techcribs www.nairaland.com/attachments/8314429_images13_jpeg_jpegc38cacc753be0ec722c575388df668f6 Samsung Electronics will cease operations at one of its mobile phone manufacturing plants in China, the company said, as its sales in the world’s biggest smartphone market slumps amid rising competition from lower-cost local rivals. The South Korean company has seen its share of the Chinese market shrink to 1 percent in the first quarter of this year, losing out to home-grown brands like Huawei, according to market research firm Counterpoint, which pegs Samsung’s share of the pie at about 15 percent at mid-2013. www.nairaland.com/attachments/8314428_download_pngc26be60cfd1ba40772b5ac48b95ab19b “As part of ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency in our production facilities, Samsung Electronics has arrived at the difficult decision to cease operations of Tianjin Samsung Electronics Telecommunication,” Samsung said in a statement, referring to the plant in northern Chinese city of Tianjin. The factory, which currently employs about 2,600 people, is scheduled to be shut down by the end of this year. Source>> http://techcribs.com.ng/samsung-to-shut-mobile-phone-plant-in-china/

CES may not be for another few weeks, but Samsung is already getting the ball rolling on new products, starting with an updated version of the Notebook 9 Pen laptop — which now comes in a new, 15-inch size, in addition to the old 13-inch form factor. Previously, only the regular Notebook 9 model offered the larger size, but now it’s coming to the convertible 2-in-1 model, too.www.nairaland.com/attachments/8312816_images10_jpeg_jpegc5c0a48be9bad09b46e26308cf717d9b One of the big new features on the updated Notebook 9 Pen is an improved S Pen. Just like its smartphone cousin, the Note 9, the new S Pen for the Notebook 9 Pen now offers improved latency (Samsung says its up to two times faster). Samsung also now offers multiple user replaceable tips for the S Pen, allowing you to customize different drawing styles. (There’s also a bright yellow paint job on the S Pen, to match the Ikea blue laptop, a color combination Samsung introduced with its flagship phone earlier this year.) As for the rest of the Notebook 9 Pen, it doesn’t seem that different from last year’s model. There are a few new tweaks, though: Samsung is promising the latest 8th Gen Intel processors, gigabit Wi-Fi, and the port selection has been overhauled to offer two Thunderbolt 3 ports and a single regular USB-C plug, along with a headphone / mic jack and a microSD slot. www.nairaland.com/attachments/8312817_images11_jpeg_jpeg2db82c4a8d0f86b2eeb07aac89170992 Without actually getting some hands-on time with the new Notebook 9 Pen, it’s hard to tell whether or not Samsung has fixed the bigger problems with the current Notebook 9 Pen — the cheap, plastic-y feel and the poor battery life. Samsung is promising a vague “2019” release window, but hopefully we’ll get more information — including things like actual specs and a price tag — come CES in January. Volvo is already planning to put its first electric VNR truck starting from 2019. Many people do confuse with the maker of the XC40 and the V60. The all-electric VNR regional transport truck is based on established EV technology that Volvo pioneered in its FE Electric city buses, introduced earlier this year. Volvo Trucks’ aptly named sister company Volvo Buses has managed to sell more than 4,000 electric buses since it launched them in 2010. www.nairaland.com/attachments/8311559_images6_jpeg_jpegb8e70b8cebe0822fdd8baa3435f1ac08 The FE Electric drivetrain consists of two electric motors that produce a maximum of 496 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. The motors are paired with a two-speed transmission that can transmit a total of 20,651 lb-ft of torque to the truck’s rear axle. The system is available with battery packs of up to 300 kilowatt-hours that deliver a range of approximately 124 miles. “The Volvo VNR Electric leverages the versatility of the new Volvo VNR series with a proven fully electric powertrain, and represents a strategic stride toward a comprehensive electrified transport ecosystem,” Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America, said in a statement Wednesday. “Cities prioritizing sustainable urban development can leverage electrified transport solutions to help improve air quality and reduce traffic noise. Cleaner, quieter, fully electric commercial transport also creates opportunities for expanded morning and late-night operations, helping cut traffic congestion during peak hours.”www.nairaland.com/attachments/8311558_download11_jpeg_jpeg71d4655d2e26013a30b0b55ec1bb532d The VNR demonstration program is a cooperative effort between Volvo Trucks and the South Coast Air Quality Management District which monitors air quality throughout the non-desert portions of Southern California. The partnership is called LIGHTS, which stands for Low Impact Green Heavy Transport Solutions. The LIGHTS partnership has already received a $44.8 million grant from the California Air Resources Board to help modernize and improve the fleets and facilities of two of the states largest trucking companies. source>> http://techcribs.com.ng/volvo-trucks-is-bringing-its-all-electric-semi-truck-to-california-in-2019/

US chip-maker Qualcomm claims it has won an injunction against Apple that effectively bans the import and sale of a number of iPhone models, ranging from the iPhone 6S to the iPhone X. The preliminary order, issued by a Chinese court, is the latest in step a continuing feud between the two tech giants over intellectual property. www.nairaland.com/attachments/8311556_images9_jpeg_jpegfdb2ae2272d49a281724a44126e0a27d However, Apple says all of its iPhone models remain on sale in the country. The disputed patents relate to software rather than hardware. The injunction affects devices running older versions of Apple’s iOS operating system and not those running the latest version, iOS 12. The court found Apple had violated two of Qualcomm’s patents – one regarding photograph resizing and the other related to how apps are managed on a touch screen.www.nairaland.com/attachments/8311557_applefinallyreleasesitsfirstofficialcasefortheiphonexr_jpeg008d9f71590fc02189486d8358676bc5 “Apple continues to benefit from our intellectual property while refusing to compensate us,” said Don Rosenberg, general counsel of Qualcomm. However, Apple responded that the attempted ban was “another desperate move by a company whose illegal practices are under investigation by regulators around the world”. McLaren Automotive now has a way for drivers to mess up their hair even faster with the introduction of the 720S Spider. Just like the coupe, the roofless McLaren 720S packs 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque, and will rocket to 60 miles per hour in a claimed 2.8 seconds. www.nairaland.com/attachments/8297595_mclaren720sspider13_jpeg19e44734ca900480acf4094deea5f875 The 720S Spider is built around what McLaren calls the Monocage II-S carbon-fiber tub, a variant of the Monocage II tub used for the 720S coupe. All told, the Spider is only 108 pounds — or just under 4 percent — heavier than the coupe. With such little weight gain, McLaren says that the 720S Spider’s quarter-mile time is only one-tenth of a second slower than the coupe’s, at a brisk 10.4 seconds. As in the 720S coupe, power for the Spider comes from McLaren’s twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V8, with a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission sending power to the rear wheels. The car also boasts carbon-ceramic brakes, Pirelli P-Zero tires and adaptive suspension. The McLaren 720S Spider does not look dramatically different from the coupe with the roof closed. The power-retracting roof can be lowered in just 11 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph. (The 650S Spider, by contrast, needed 17 seconds to operate the roof and doing so could only be accomplished at up to 18.5 mph.) McLaren says it has registered three patents on the roof mechanism. An optional electrochromic glass roof panel can alternate between tinted and transparent at the touch of a button. Top speed with the roof up is 212 mph, matching the 720S Coupe, while with the roof open the 720S Spider can manage 202 mph. Samsung has announced a phone of its own that’ll make use of its new Infinity-Odisplay. The Samsung A8s bears a infinity hole punched above the selfi camera located at the top left hand side of the device . www.nairaland.com/attachments/8297497_img20181210185225_jpegb83f16b65b748e1fec0ad7785ebde699 Outside of that unique 6.4-inch (2340 x 1080 pixel) display, the phone — which doesn’t yet have an official price — is a fairly standard mid-range affair. The A8s is powered by a Snapdragon 710 with options for either 6GB or 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of onboard storage with up to 512GB of expansion via microSD. On the back it’s got the same triple-camera array as the Galaxy A7, while the front-side selfie camera contained within the cutout has a 24 megapixel sensor. Samsung was the first company to work on this , we expect more in year 2019. The A8s announcement brings the confirmed number of hole-punch handsets up to three. We’re expecting to see Huawei’s Nova 4 on December 17th, while the View 20 is due to be officially announced on December 26th in China with a worldwide launch to follow on January 22nd. Meanwhile pre-orders for Samsung’s own A8s are due to open on December 21st. This might lead to a new trend of android device as we wait for the launch of this device on December 17. Thing just keep hitting Huawei this week, since their CFO got arrested. BT announced that they will be removing equipment from “key areas” of its 4G network. New Zealand also blocked the sale of Huawei to their regional areas claiming it’s a “significant network security risk.” www.nairaland.com/attachments/8293444_huaweimediapadm2huaweilogoces2016_jpeg847fae1831542e991058707cab8ad350 It now looks like the Japanese government is also set to halt government purchases of equipment from Huawei and ZTE. Citing unnamed sources, Reuters says the decision was motivated by a need to beef up the country’s defences against “intelligence leaks and cyber attacks.” The Japanese government is expected to formally introduce the new policy on Monday, with chief government spokesman Yoshihide Suga stating that cybersecurity is a key issue for the country: www.nairaland.com/attachments/8293445_images1_jpeg_jpeg209edec6a4f898efcdc7a52d90b407e7 Cybersecurity is becoming an important issue in Japan. We’ll take firm measures looking at it from a variety of perspectives. Huawei, meanwhile, has maintained that it has no ties to the Chinese government, and that it doesn’t use its network infrastructure to spy on other countries. However, that has done little to persuade governments around the world from banning its equipment. Source>> http://techcribs.com.ng/japanese-government-is-the-latest-to-ban-huawei-network-equipment/

The Toyota Prius racecar will participate in Japan’s Super GT racing series in 2019.www.nairaland.com/attachments/8293733_images4_jpeg_jpeg9f47bf0b994a4097d89d18197817d3e2 In Japan, the Super GT racing series takes production cars from predominantly Japanese domestic manufacturers and transforms them beyond almost all recognition into crazy looking racing cars. The Prius race car you just didn’t picture is actually taking part in the series lower-class GT300 series for the 2019 season and the video of it undergoing testing published Wednesday is getting our heart pumping. www.nairaland.com/attachments/8293762_images5_jpeg_jpeg1e52807b9931d5cfcf296bb78d4e5f7e This racing version Toyota’snarcolepsy-on-wheels Prius indeed packs a mid-mounted, naturally-aspirated V8 that normally sees duty in the Lexus RC-F GT3 race car. Unlike some fancypants European (or Ford Shelby GT350) flat-plane V8, this engine is a cross-plane crankdesign like most production car V8 engines and as such it sounds burly and mean. We never thought we’d ever have occasion to say this after we found out about the Hellcat-powered 9-second drag Prius, but we now have a new favorite V8-powered Prius and dangit, this one handles. Audi launches its first proper electric car, The electric car which is been designed from the ground up to be powered by electrons: the Audi e-tron. We got our first good look at a flashy launch event in San Francisco this past September, and now we’ve finally had a chance to drive it. After 24 hours on plane after plane, we put the e-tron through its paces on and off the roads. Along the way, we confirmed some of our preconceptions about this new BEV and busted others. www.nairaland.com/attachments/8283235_2019audietron1640x480_jpeg281166c64d91896640759918d8402935 The look is slightly aerodynamic, Total power and torque output is 355hp (265kW) and 413lb-ft (561Nm) in normal conditions, which can increase to 402hp (300kW) and 490lb-ft (664Nm) for short bursts—about eight seconds—when the e-tron is in its sportiest setting. (The front motor is rated at 168hp at 182lb-ft (125kW at 247Nm), boosted to 181hp and 228lb-ft (135kW and 309Nm), the rear normally provides 188hp (140kW) at 232lb-ft (314Nm) but can boost to 221hp (165kW) and 262ft-lbs (355Nm).Above the battery cells, is another aluminum cover, then the battery junction box at the front, and another set of three more battery modules at the rear. The battery is rated at 95kWh with a nominal voltage of 396V. That gives the e-tron a WLTP-determined range of 248.5 miles (400km), although Audi is still waiting for the more accurate EPA rating to be determined. www.nairaland.com/attachments/8283236_2019audietron10640x480_jpeg6f49cb7d56dfdfaa5998eec25dde403f The pack is warrantied for eight years or 100,000 miles, and Audi says it is guaranteed to maintain at least 70 percent of its capacity at the eight-year mark. Having a speedometer that only reads to 310 mph, the 1500-horsepower Bugatti Chiron is electronically speed-limited from the factory at “just” 261 mph thanks to tire limitations. www.nairaland.com/attachments/8283067_download3_jpeg_jpeg6fab54c2d5d88044138f21451e5b66bc At the beginning of this post is a video showing you just how quickly it reaches that top speed. The video was an event recorded from the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds, where owners can take their cars and drive flat out for several miles on a closed off runway. It’s worth noting that the driver started off slowly, and didn’t launch the car. In fact, it seems the driver didn’t even go full-throttle until the 100-mph mark. Here’s the in-cabin clip from the run. www.nairaland.com/attachments/8283068_download4_jpeg_jpeg9143c2fc436f25758cb70d25fc6f4be9 I know this sounds funny but you can see that the racers still accelerates fast at the end of the Finish lane, which means the car can still exceed its speed if allow to race further. A cafe staffed by robot waiters controlled remotely by paralysed people has opened in Tokyo, Japan. A total of 10 people with a variety of conditions that restrict their movement have helped control robots in the Dawn Ver cafe. The robot's controllers earned 1,000 yen (£7) per hour - the standard rate of pay for waiting staff in Japan. It is hoped the project will give more independence to people with disabilities. The OriHime-D robots used in the cafe were developed by Japanese start-up Ory and were originally created to be used in the homes of people with disabilities that severely restrict their movement. The robots can be told to move, observe, talk to customers and carry objects, even if their operator can only move their eyes. These abilities have been adapted for use in the cafe. The pilot scheme aims to test connections between disabled people and the robots, to help people who might otherwise be housebound earn a wage and interact with other people more easily.
