Self-Driving School Bus �Test Halted in the US



French-based transport firm Transdev has been ordered to stop an “unlawful” test of a driverless school bus in Florida by US regulators.

The regulator said the firm had not been authorised to transport schoolchildren in Florida, and said the test was “irresponsible” and “inappropriate”.

Transdev said it would stop the test a week early.

The firm said it believed the pilot met testing requirements.

But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the test of the EZ10 Generation II driverless shuttle in the Babcock Ranch community in Florida was outside the scope of what the firm had been authorised to do.

“Innovation must not come at the risk of public safety,” Heidi King, NHTSA deputy administrator said in a statement on Monday.

“Using a non-compliant test vehicle to transport children is irresponsible, inappropriate, and in direct violation of the terms of Transdev’s approved test project,” she added.

The NHTSA said it had given Transdev permission in March to import the driverless shuttle on a temporary basis for testing and demonstration purposes, but not as a school bus.

VR headset maker Oculus co-founder Brendan Trexler Iribe is leaving Facebook Inc, according to his post on the social media network on Monday.



Oculus, which makes Oculus Rift and Gear VR headsets, was acquired by Facebook in 2014 for $3 billion.

In 2016, Facebook reassigned Iribe, who had been Oculus’ chief executive, to head development of virtual reality tools for PCs.

Iribe’s departure follows the exits of Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger last month.

WhatsApp co-founders Jan Koum and Brian Acton have also left the company.

YouTube will spend $20million (£15m) developing educational and how-to content on the platform, the company has announced.

Some video-makers have been frustrated by changes to the platform that made it harder for them to earn money producing short and well-researched videos.

Critics say YouTube’s algorithms favour long and sensationalist videos.

The company says its new fund will make the platform “better for educators and learners”.

As part of the scheme, YouTube will launch a new Learning channel, which will showcase its own original programmes and those made by independent creators.

Organisations such as Goodwill and Year Up will help curate the channel and put together playlists of educational content.

Snapchat’s augmented-reality selfie filters now work on cats, the photo-sharing app has announced.





Previously, its facial-recognition technology could apply the filters to only humans and some breeds of dog.



Now, cat owners can use Snapchat’s Lenses to decorate their pet with hats, glasses and slices of bread.



The announcement came weeks after parent company Snap reported the number of people using Snapchat on a daily basis had dropped.



Its number of daily active users dropped by three million to 188 million between April and June. It was the first time the company had reported a drop in daily active users.



Snapchat is not the only company developing “face recognition” that works on animals.

A 5.3mm (0.2in) thick 4G phone has been announced by Japan’s biggest telecoms firm NTT Docomo.



The compact device, which will be released in Japan next month, is designed to fit inside a card holder.

It is part of a trend to offer so-called companion mobile devices to those who already own larger smartphones.

The phone weighs 47g (1.6oz) and features an electronic-paper touchscreen, similar to e-books.

It will have limited functionality, with calls, texts and a net connection but no camera or facility to work with mobile apps.

The phone – dubbed Card Keitai KY-01L – will be made by electronics firm Kyocera.

The “simple, easy-to-carry” card phone is seen by NTT Docomo as a useful extra device for people who have already purchased large-screen smartphones.

NTT Docomo describes the mobile as the “world’s thinnest” but that claim is likely to be disputed by other phone makers.

The Oppo R5 was 4.85mm thick when it was released in 2014, followed the same year by the Vivo X5 Max at 4.75mm.

And in 2016, Motorola released the Moto Z which was just under 5.2mm thick.

Facebook says hackers accessed a wide swath of information — ranging from emails and phone numbers to more personal details like sites visited and places checked into — from millions of accounts as part of a security breach the company disclosed two weeks ago.

Twenty-nine million accounts had some form of information stolen. Originally Facebook said 50 million accounts were affected, but that it didn’t know if they had been misused.
The news comes at a jittery time ahead of the midterm elections when Facebook is fighting off misuse of its site on a number of fronts . The company said Friday there’s no evidence this is related to the midterms.

On Friday Facebook said hackers accessed names, email addresses or phone numbers from these accounts. For 14 million of them, hackers got even more data, such as hometown, birthdate, the last 10 places they checked into or the 15 most recent searches.

An additional 1 million accounts were affected, but hackers didn’t get any information from them.

Facebook said the FBI is investigating, but asked the company not to discuss who may be behind the attack. The company said it hasn’t ruled out the possibility of smaller-scale attacks that used the same vulnerability.

Facebook has said the attackers gained the ability to “seize control” of those user accounts by stealing digital keys the company uses to keep users logged in. They could do so by exploiting three distinct bugs in Facebook’s code.

The hackers began with a set of accounts they controlled, then used an automated process to access the digital keys for accounts that were “friends” with the accounts they had already compromised. That expanded to “friends of friends,” extending their access to about 400,000 accounts, and went on from there to reach 30 million accounts. There is no evidence that the hackers made any posts or took any other activity using the hacked accounts.

The company said it has fixed the bugs and logged out affected users to reset those digital keys.

At the time, CEO Mark Zuckerberg — whose own account was compromised — said attackers would have had the ability to view private messages or post on someone’s account, but there’s no sign that they did.

Facebook Vice President Guy Rosen said in a call with reporters on Friday the company hasn’t ruled out the possibility of smaller-scale efforts to exploit the same vulnerability that the hackers used before it was disabled.

The company has a website its 2 billion global users can use to check if their accounts have been accessed, and if so, exactly what information was stolen. It will also provide guidance on how to spot and deal with suspicious emails or texts. Facebook will also send messages directly to those people affected by the hack.

Patrick Moorhead, founder of Moor Insights & Strategy, said the breach appeared similar to identity theft breaches that have occurred at companies including Yahoo and Target in 2013.

“Those personal details could be very easily be used for identity theft to sign up for credit cards, get a loan, get your banking password, etc.,” he said. “Facebook should provide all those customers free credit monitoring to make sure the damage is minimized.”

Thomas Rid, a professor at the Johns Hopkins University, also said the evidence, particularly the size of the breach, seems to point to a criminal motive rather than a sophisticated state operation, which usually targets fewer people.

“This doesn’t sound very targeted at all,” he said. “Usually when you’re looking at a sophisticated government operation, then a couple of thousand people hacked is a lot, but they usually know who they’re going after.”

The Medicine and Surgery graduate was selected through a programme called Rising Star at the widely-reported One Young World Summit 2014 in Dublin, to embark upon a once-in-a-lifetime trip to space.
He graduated from Olabisi Onabanjo University and attended Adetola Odutola College, Ijebu-Ode.

In an interview, Osonuga expressed his feeling at the prospect.

“I cannot wait to go to space. It is an opportunity of a lifetime. I f I do, I will be the first black African and Nigerian to be in space. That’s just a part of it. Succeeding would help me do more humanitarian work, to solve more problems/needs on a very large scale,”
