According to a report from thenetng, Rapper Naetochukwu Chikwe better known as Naeto C has ended his relationship with Storm Records, the music home where he launched his career into the Nigerian music market.
The reason, however is not strange as the rapper revealed his plans to fully launch his WKG/Cerious Music label in a matter of months.
Unlike the many breakups that have preceded Naeto’s, the rapper’s exit is not battlemented; both parties have been very silent about the issue. As a matter of fact, Storm Records insist that the rapper is still signed with them.
One of the label’s directors Tola Odunsi admits that Naeto has had his own record label Cerious Music for a while but is still with Storm.
Naeto joined Storm Records in 2006, returning from the US where he had already formed a rap group with close friend Ikechukwu and his younger brother Uzikwendu called ‘World Famous Akademy’. With the smash hit single ‘Kini big deal’, he released his debut album ‘You Know my P’ in 2008; parted ways with Ikechukwu who left Strorm in 2010 and then released a successful second album ‘Super C Season’ in February 2011.
Storm Records headed by Obi Asika and Olisa Adibua (the pair are currently in a legal battle) have in the past signed an impressive long list of acts including Jazzman Olofin, Darey, GT the Guitarman, 2shotz, General Pype. They currently have on their roaster rappers Sasha, Yung6ix, Pop singer Ms Jaie, Urban-Pop group L.O.S and gospel singer Tosin Martins.

Femi Kuti) – With a 90′s disco/R&B theme with
instrumental pipes from afro beats maestro, Femi
Kuti. The fusion of Angolan, Ghanaian rappers
andNigeria’s Modenine set the limbo bars for The
Industry Vol. 1 on quite a high. At number two and
the compilation’s opening track, it leaves too much
to be expected.
*Mo Bottles (feat. Spellz, Traffik & Dammy
Krane) – These guys stepped down the hype that
the legends on the previous track had garnered in
anticipation of the album’s wow moments. The
Industry Vol. 1 would still be a classic without this.
*E to beh (feat. Banky W & Phyno) – Believe me
when I say you never hesperrerit. Yes, we’ve
caught on that Banky W shows prospect in the rap
genre but on E to Beh, he dropped it hot… real hot!
And trust Phyno to always represent. Good stuff!
*Moneys (feat. Eva, Aina More & Zaina) – The
divas roll dices on Moneys showing they can be as
suave as them guys. With Eva dropping lines in her
signature style, Aina trying to be an Iggy and Zaina
doing her contralto thing, it’s a decent effort that
should well… be applauded.
*Onile (feat. Eedris Abdulkareem & V-Tek) –
Eedris stole some opportunity to shine on Onile
reminding us how much we’ve missed his well
exuded presence in the industry. Guy’s still got it
good. V-Tek equally lives up to expectation when
placed alongside bars spitting wizard, Eedris.
Want Me (feat. SDC & Black Magic) – This is
classic music. Soft, mid tempo and vintage.
*Eeba (feat. Reminisce, Sossick & Sarz) – I’d
lost count of the ‘eebas’ hollered at the beginning.
It gets so annoying to that point where you just
want to skip the track. And Sarz’ rap wasn’t any bit
convincing at all. No!
*I Am Legend (feat. Ruggedman, Eedris
Abdulkareem, M.I & Waje) – This right here, is
the stuff legends are made of. The features on this
track smoked it to the last fume. They left no stick
unburned. Waje’s soprano though, it can jerk a
passed out soul back to life.
*Live It Up (feat. Seyi Shay, Zamir & General
Pype) – This feature is actually exciting. The
hierarchical blend of the artistes tells the basic of
what to expect on a song like this. Sampled on an
old skool R&B beat, Seyi’s vocals are sweet such
that you can literally lick ‘em off. Zamir’s bars
spitting game is hot and the laid back manner he
served it makes you wanna attach a boss label to
his fedora. General Pype is just a badt guy!
*Gifted – (feat. D’Banj) – 2Kriss cooked a flavour
inducing cut for koko master D’Banj to lay bare his
fallen nothingness. His vocals were stifling in and
out or maybe it was just bad production. Not sure
who this blame belongs to.
*Lori Standing (feat. D’Prince, Olamide &
Reekado Banks) – Don Jazzy brought his Mavins
eminado on Lori Standing. Reeky Banks is one fast
rising act to look out for, dude knows his music like
doing the hook to Lisa Stanfield’s Been Around The
World on the track’s close. Olamide’s cut is
impressive and not like the vocal features he’s
settled for of late.
*Faridah – (feat. Skales, Kamar & Morell) –
Simply put, this is one very beautiful, urbane style
traditional music. Them guys did good on this one.
*Marry Me (feat. Kcee & Harrysong) – Groovy
tune with melodies that will get you to show the
‘bar’ at that Owambe. It’s a couples’ classic with
potentials of becoming evergreen. Regardless, if
this song were any longer than 3 minutes, it’d have
become a bore. It was a wise choice to keep it short
thereby making it wanted more.
*How We Roll (feat. Terry G) – As the title
suggests, Terry G lips on and about his Africa wide
escapades as Naija’s number one ginja man. You
can’t miss the sweet grooves he wired into this
beat.
*Body (feat. BOJ & L.A.X) – Acts like BOJ give
hope for the future of our industry. With sounds
not relative to typical everyday music, he teams up
with Starboy’s L.A.X to deliver a special feel good
tune. You almost forget it’s a typical female
appreciation song.
*Bugatti (feat. Sean Tizzle) – Yes, I agree too.
Sean Tizzle has a fine tenor range (with auto-tune
enhancers here and there)… and that’s it! Nothing
more.
*Dan Ya Mo (feat. Lil Kesh, Viktoh & Olamide)
– YBNL Nation crew stole every opportunity to show
themselves on Dan Ya Mo and boy, did they show
themselves… *Shoki mode activated*
*Hear Say (feat. Miss Jaie, Falz & Ajebutter22)
– Another exciting feature laced with Ms Jaie’s
luscious vocals, Ajebutter’s rich deep baritones and
Falz’s genius “wazupness” which made everything
flirty and fun. Another good stuff!
*Glasses Up (feat. Yung GreyC, 2face, Sound
Sultan & Burna Boy) – Call this the feel good
anthem of legends. Yes! And this track didn’t
disappoint. 2face and Burna Boy probably deserve
more accolades than they might get for this party
starting number. The fine tune puts you in
celebratory mood. Cheers to 25 freaking years

*Thank You (feat. Niyola & Nikki Laoye) –
Having come this far and achieved this much, it’ll
only be proper to show gratitude to The One who
made it possible. While Niyola slacked on the
appreciation number (I’m actually wondering why),
Nikki did everything she could to make it up but it
wasn’t just enough to cover for the blandness. In
the end, the intended effort would be defeated.
*Victory Song (feat. Ice Prince, Yung L, Endia
& J Milla) – Finally, The Industry Volume 1
(almost) comes to a close. It’s an all rap affair with
Ice Prince leading the gang in a winning expression
shown by vocal chants, tough percussion rounds in
the music instrumentation and the finesse delivery
of fine rappers alike.
*Emujo (feat. Iyanya & 4×4) – You’ll love the afro
beat feel but at this point, even you can agree that
we’ve had an even fairer dose of African collabo on
track 2. Skip!
*Cool As Ice (feat. Ice Prince & Iceberg Slim) –
Sampling this track, all I could think of was the
impressive delivery. Iceberg Slim really is one
underrated rap star. Nigga is so damn good, he be
sending chills down on hiss verse. Ice Prince… well,
he’s a very good badt guy.
*Spin (Remix feat. Vector, Tenim & Kay
Switch) – This is perhaps one of the best collabos
on The Industry Vol. 1 and the features rocked this
hit. V.E.C served his lines on a platter, Tenim’s
melodies had a special appeal and Kay Switch’s
sass attitude was the cherry topping on this cake’s
icing. Justice would have been done even if Jimmy
chose to leave this remix as the only bonus.
*Komije (feat. Igho, Orezi, Sinzu & Muna) -
Catchy beats, kicks that induce a tingly sensation,
Orezi assisted vocals, punch packing flows from
SINZU!!! And eccentric rap diva, Muna… what
more could we (as fans) possibly want? Quite an
unexpected but mostly decent close.
The Industry Volume 1 is not exactly the
flawless album that we (did not) expect it to be,
regardless, for a project that celebrates 25
professional years in an industry like ours, Cool DJ
Jimmy Jatt played dare with the truth and then did
the seemingly impossible (even though not
technically). You can easily make a pick of 12 – 14
songs that would perfectly suit the label of
“Africa’s biggest collaborative effort”. Still, much
as the content in the body of work could easily
pass off for future material spread in record time,
the turn up (features) tells much about the accord
and respect he’s been able to command in the
industry. History will never go down without a
mention of his name. DJ Jimmy Jatt was, and still
is… HERE!

Again this year, I attended the GTBank Fashion Weekend. It was a place to be and be seen in Lagos, especially as Nigeria has a dearth of places you can go to with your family to have a relaxing time. It was also open to all people across the socio-economic spectrum, which was good. My observation is that many banks do not open their events to all of their customers, which I believe should be addressed. I was impressed by what I saw and experienced in terms of the high street theme, the esthetics and displays which were an improvement from last year.
There was an international flavor to the whole event, with the master classes, run way shows, locations for photographs and strategically placed mannequins, etc. It was really well organized.
I must commend the bank for supporting small and medium enterprises. Many of the companies I patronize online had their goods displayed. The bank also surpassed itself in the quality and quantity of social media and direct marketing it did for the event. Many enterprises had high quality graphics advertising their businesses designed for them and sent to them to advertise to their customers and communities. I also learnt that the selection of vendors was done randomly at no cost to the vendors. Again, this is commendable. More organizations should give a thought to GTBank’s example and give back to their customers and communities.
One of the things, I always tell banks, is the fact that many of their customers do not think they support them enough. Many bank customers have said, the banks are not interested in their welfare. They complain that to get a loan to grow their business is a herculean task at very competitive rates. After the loans are given, relationship officers are only out to collect MONEY. They feel no support whatsoever is given in ensuring their businesses thrive and become more viable for the mutual benefit of both – bank and organisation.
So, GTBank consistently providing this platform to its customers every year is an example other banks should emulate. According to Frontstream, “companies that take an active role in giving back to their customers and communities are generally viewed more favorably than those that do not have highly visible programs. Having goals and a vision for your company that go beyond products and profits definitely provides a warmer image of your business that consumers will be more eager to engage with”. Can we attribute this fact to why GTBank’s customer base is so large? Food for thought!
I interviewed customers who attended and like in all good things, there is always room for improvement. Many commented that the vendors on display were too “high end”, meaning too expensive. In view of this, they found it difficult to buy anything. It was therefore a sightseeing expedition instead of it being an opportunity to see a variety of goods and be able to purchase items at an affordable rate.
I remember last year, on display were vendors who sold good quality clothes, nice bags (Made in Nigeria), jewelry, shoes, etc that you could get at very affordable prices. It was not the case this year and if they were, maybe those I spoke to did not see them and neither did I. The bank may want to see how this gap can be bridged. I like the idea of raising the bar and bringing in high end retailers to the fair, but since the bank caters to people across the socio-economic spectrum, this demographic must be considered in the selection of vendors.
An observation was that the area designated as food court was not adequate. There was also not without enough variety of snacks and food to buy. Since the experience is meant to be some form of retail therapy and many see going to the fair as a family outing or friends hanging out, the bank may want to consider how they make it a lot more relaxing for attendees. Last year, after shopping, I had to go to Hardrock Café next door for rest and relaxation because I really shopped till I dropped and needed to celebrate the bargains I had gotten.
The size of the booths is another area for improvement, which I may not be completely correct about but I felt that the booths were too small. Since, I did not measure them, I cannot be certain of this; I however, felt everywhere was cramped. It is either the fact that the booths were too many this year or the size of the booths were reduced, because we were almost stepping on each other and on customers in the next booth as we shopped. Then again, it may be that there were a lot more people in attendance than last years’ which gives this illusion.
In conclusion, I believe GTBank has impacted its community very positively and should continue for more effective engagement with its customers and stakeholders, which is supported by research. A 2014 study by Nielsen revealed that “55% of consumers across 60 countries say they are willing to pay more for products and services provided by companies that are committed to positive social and environmental impact.” Additional research from Cone Communications/Echo Global showed “90 percent of shoppers worldwide are likely to switch to brands that support a good cause.”
In addition, a company’s greatest asset is its people. According to Jack Welch, the famous CEO behind GE’s monumental growth, “You build the best team, you win.” Companies with published impact initiatives have an easier time recruiting talent. According to the Net Impact’s What Workers Want report, 45% of employees would take a 15% pay cut for a job that makes a social or environmental impact. Another 51% of workers say that helping “make a better world” and making a “contribution to society” are essential for their ideal job. GTBank is on a winning streak and should continue to improve on the good the bank is doing.

jrogers: The harmonica playing Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo (popularly known as D’banj) came into national consciousness about 10 years ago with his energy-sapping brand of music. With his now former producer (Don Jazzy) and other Mo Hits crew members, D’banj soon became the unofficial Nigerian export to the world. Nigerians and the world could not have enough of D’banj, from one hit to the other, even the sky could not limit him, it was just his spring board. D’banj gave the world everything, sounds, moves, slangs, controversies, everything. Advertisers in need of endorsement were coming by the numbers. The Kokolets and the mamalets could not have enough. And the kokomaster was never tired of dropping it like it’s hot. Award started rolling-in by the truck load. D’banj brand of household materials started coming in in droves - from Koko water, to Koko phones, Koko lounge – the D’banj brand was being engraved into everybody’s consciousness in more ways than one. He was like Midas, everything he touched automatically turned to gold. Then boom, the honeymoon was over! The news broke that D’banj was leaving Mo Hits. What? That’s impossible. Everybody thought it was a rumor; D’banj cannot afford leaving Mo Hits. What will happen to the “It’s Don Jazzy again” opening that has suddenly become the official intro to good music? Then came the confirmation, D’banj was not only leaving Mo Hits, the Nigerian music powerhouse was disbanding. One rumor led to another. Then Don Jazzy came with Mavin records. D’banj with DB Records. And the music continues. However, while the profile of Don Jazzy and Mavin Records have continued to soar – releasing hits after hits, collaborations left, right and centre, endorsements all over the place, the same could not be said of D’banj. The bankruptcy rumor did not help matter. Though D’banj never left the industry, his efforts have been below par at best. The reception has consistently fallen short of the standard we expected from an artist of his caliber. And with artist live Davido, Whizkid, Korede Bello, Olamide and so many others currently in the limelight, thus making the return even harder for him. Zeroing in on his latest effort, a single titled, ‘Who is knocking on my door’. The video for Knocking on My Door serve as the first of the 7 videos expected to drop from his visual EP, I am D’banj, which is part of the superman’s 10th anniversary celebration is expected to drop sometime next month. I have listened to the audio and watched the video several times, and I have time to discuss the tow with a few of my friends. However, my opinion on them, as written here, are totally mine. • There is no ‘It’s Don Jazzy again’; of course you know the reason for that. • Nice beat, though monotonous and fell short of the one we use to know in the days of Mo Hits records. It would have been acceptable if he used this 10 years ago. I expected his beats to have matured over time too. • Despite what has been said about the beat, it still seems to be the selling point of the single because the song lacks adequate lyrics. For example, he mentioned ‘Ko le ye won’ 32 times in the 3 minutes, 1 second song (audio): that’s one ko le ye won too many! • The video, obviously not shot in Nigeria, is about the high point of song. However, I wonder why everybody in the video have the same surname, ’Lee’. What’s the heavy Yoruba accent in the convo with the heavily built neighbor, The Rock Lee? Is that an invitation to the Yoruba movie director that he is available for a role in a Yoruba movie? • Also in the video, I saw that ‘Hand in front of the thigh’ move that we’ll now know the meaning, though could not verify. • Lest I forget, the harmonica is back! In all, D’banj still shows that he has the ‘Entertainer’ status that have endeared her into the hearts and minds of many of his fans but I still think he needs people such as Don Jazzy and the crew, and others that helped him hit the limelight in the first place. Dedicating his MAMA Evolution Award to Don Jazzy may just be a hint that the duo may be doing something together soon which will put the career of D’banj in good stead for proper resuscitation.
