That's what some historians said especially the Nupe among them. grin
It was believed that the Nupe, Igala and probably Ebira are from the same root.

Even Sultan was describing the Yorubas to the British he refered to them as being of same source with the Noofes(Nupes). After the fulani hijacked their traditional stool, the fulani elements in Nupeland have been trying to give them an hausa-fulani outlook.

But it is noteworthy to point out that the Nupes are distinct people different from the hausa or fulanis and they have fought alongside the Yorubas to rid their lands of fulani domination in the past.

they also said that sango wife is from Nupe kingdom, how true is that
It was the mother that came from Nupe land and he got the power to conquer fire from there. His wife was Oya. Dont know her origin though. The popular river oya was named after her.

u'r making sense bro, I hail from ilorin. His grandfather yoruba's name is olarewaju his own name is kolapo Ibrahim sulu gambari, one of his wife's name is Taiye and one of his son yoruba name is folashade, he just removed kolapo from his name wen he ascend d throne. Kwara is a Yoruba state. As story say's if u'r saying OYO state story and u no mention ilorin ur story is nt complete bcs dey are both Afonja's
See our celebrity names who hail from ilorin like Femi Adebayo& co. Abeg which of d name is Hausa name
You are correct bro. His father's name is Olanrewaju Alabi Opo Ayelabola Sulukhanani Gambari. His is Kolapo Ishola Ibrahim Gambari. Kolapo cos his father was a prince from the Gambari family and the mother another princess of the Abdulkadri line of the dynasty, who could have been an emir if she was a prince.

The removal of the Yoruba names was a ploy to seek northern patronage and protection should situation goes wrong some day.

Its pertinent to mention that different groups settled in yorubaland and became metamorphosed into the tribe. Even Yoruba wasnt the original language of ife. The indigenous language had now been confined to an occultic status only understood by the initiated.

So be it fulani origin, nupe, borgu, bini, kanuri, amaro (brazilian), saro (sierra leone, american, creoles), ogu, aganyin(Togo) etc, the fact remains they are yoruba today and they have contributed immensely to the cultural diversity and richness of the yoruba heritage

Why oba of Lagos no dey the listhuh? shocked sad shocked sad shocked shocked
Of course, he is on the list. Every Yoruba king is known as oba of their particular town but at point of ascendancy to the throne to first person to be crown always take a title which every subsequent kings after him will bear.

In our case, the real title of king of Lagos is Eleko of Eko, which actually presents the domain under him. He is not the king of the entire Lagos but Eko ie Lagos Island and all the environs (all lands belonging to the Eko Lagosians or under their suzerainty).

So the name Oba of Lagos is a modern day invention. Every Islander knows that the title of our king is Eleko derived from Olu Eko. Alaafin, Awujale, Elepe, Owa etc are titles of the respective kings but their are all Obas. Even oba of Benin is known as Onibini of Bini or Ibiniland in the yoruba list of its first class grade 1 obas which is about 7, most of the other obas are offshoot of these 7 or were once under their dominions. And thats why their offspring kings are always the head of the council of obas in their domains.

So when you hear about the superiority of one king over another it is referring to this lineage thing. Just as the Alaafin has always been in total control in the past and the Oonis have always been under his control. The Alaafin appointed Aare ona kakanfo for the entire yoruba race and declare wars not the ooni.

If he is not one of us then those baales and obas in his division should have a yoruba leading them

Did they call Lagos a no man's land in the 60's when Awolowo introduced ethnic tribalism? What difference was it then? Yorubas contest and win elections in UK and other places, an nobody told them to go back to their country to vote. Recently Igbo won elections in UK and Canada as well. Nobody asked them to go home. The thing is that most of you irrational people must find a thing to hang on an animal just to ensure it was hanged.
Awolowo rode on the sentiments of the time. It was a period of Yoruba renaissance and the people of yoruba descents were glad Awo took power from Zik cos we wouldnt have gotten all we had. It was a political strategy it need not destroy we the youth of later day cos all those men were long gone.

This is the time to retrace our steps and rebuild our institutions and never allow all the divisive forces to control nor rule us again.

The country could split but not with current state of hatred.

What of Miyetti Allah, an Hausa/Fulani group that have gone more than insulting all Nigerians, by killing them in thousands and destroying their communities. Could you imagine what you would have done or say if Miyetti Allah was IPOB? Nigeria has massive problem because different people with distinct cultural values and aspirations are lumped together by force...Lugard didn't consult the people before the different groups were merged together in 1914.
Miyetti Allah continue to take shelter in their own enclave which is the north. They often displayed their insanity and cowardice by coming to attack people when their victims least expected. I'm a muslim and hate barbarism in all form and by Allah's injunction a place is reserved for them in hell fire.

It is Allah's commandment that let there be no compulsion in religion Quran 2:256. These men are ethnic bigots whose level of intolerance for others drove them to murderous frenzy.

With the ibos its different. You can live peace with the Yorubas who may not really care the name you call God if only you decide to be a part of the community in the Yoruba way while not losing your identity.

Maybe most of you guys dont know that the first mosque in Nigeria was built in Yorubaland? And yet they dont go about killing others in the name of religion. Google is ur friend.

when you guys make comments like this I laugh so hard.when or where els have you seen an Igbo man making derogatory comments against yoruba except on nairaland where both tribes have turned against themselves. I haven't hard or read about both tribes battling themselves, infact igbos have endured and shown restraints many times against Yoruba onslaught such as the destruction and looting of igbo shops and businesses in the middle of the night in oshodi when they were away during Christmas celebrations, this act was supported by the state government. 2.locking up of trade fare without due process.3 Harassment of igbos during and after the last elections, some were beaten while others had their businesses destroyed by rampaging Yoruba youths.4.Deportation of igbos unlawful by the former governor,in the face of these illegal activities igbos have shown restraints. Remember that Lagos state is not a country but a state among the 36 states of the federal republic where all Nigerians have equal rights regardless of tribe, religion or political affiliation. The constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria guarantees equal human rights for all Nigerians. If you people want to yorubanize Lagos and ban others from accessing it then you guys should head to the national assembly to do that but perpetrating wickedness against other tribes while yours are working in the oil companies located elsewhere, most of the staff of Lagos based companies working in other states are Yoruba no one treats you people harshly but you have started something that is likely to cause trouble in Nigeria and when the flames begin you wil blame others and take cover under the agbada of the north.
Try to get ur facts right. The ibos have constantly cast aspersions on the personalities of Yoruba leaders, kings, culture and traditions. It started getting worse after the 2015 elections. You are entitled to some rights and privileges under the constitution no doubt but the way of life of your hosts must be respected. Wether a state or country the affinities shared by the groups inhabiting it must be honored. Do you guys asked why ibos is the target everywhere?

The first Nigerian to ever insulted the sensibilities of all indigenous Lagosians was an ibo man named Wachukwu Jaja with the claim that Lagos my ancestral homeland was a no man's land.

Lagos is definitely someone's land but whose land in particular is what I still don't understand, certain people claim it's a Benin land others say it belongs to the aworis while others maintain it's a Yoruba land.

An average layman like myself would be confused in this quagmire of claims, until the history and ownership of Lagos is fully and indisputably clarified it is safe to say it's a no man's land.
My friend it shouldn't be the headache of the ibos. Lagos was never a bini land. When you say Awori, the word is just a reference to a dialect of yoruba just like ijebu, ijesha, ikale, ilaje, igbomina etc

To clear ignorance the bini suzerainty only occured on the place called lagos island not the entire Lagos. Lagos Island is just one of the many communities that make up Lagos State.

And the bini dynasty ended with Oba Akinsemoyin or Eletu Kekere. The other kings were direct descendants from Ologun-kutere of Ajanaku who married the sister of Oba Akinsemoyin.

The English once came under German and French suzerains who left significant influences but England never ceaze to be English. And besides the bini royalty you are making reference to too has a blood link to the yoruba royalties. Some kingdoms in yorubaland like owo, ikale, ilaje, ugbo were offshoot of bini kingdom. You cant separate the yorubas and the binis cultural affinities.

Lagos or Lagos Island is a yorubaland and that is why all the names of our landmarks such as enu owa, oju olobun, erelu, are in yoruba and yoruba is the language of our people.

Don't Yoruba have properties in London? Does it mean that they are British, use your sense s.
Of course they do. And some of them are British while some are not. But both the Yorubas and the Ibos living and owning properties in those climes had peace cos they learnt to assimilate and respect the norms and values of their various host soceities.

You cant be antagonistic and keep making derogatory comments in public against them like the Ibos do in Yorubaland and still expect the same friendliness. We humans are emotional beings.

Picture the scenario the Ibos would face in South Africa with a similar attitude. Telling them zulus south Africa is a no man's land. I wont want to imagine it.

We must learn to live in peace. And at the same time be a good member of the communities we find ourselves.

Not all Yoruba but the Lagos Oyo Osun and Ogun states can't be trusted, They easily somersault.
Yoruba nation is one. I'm a Lagosian and an Islander. My peeps are known to stand their grounds when its necessary to do so even if it will cost them their lives and dont engage in exercise in futility.

Intrigues, treachery, loyalty, disappointment, alliance and fortification is a rule of the game in the struggle for power. Read Robert Greene's 48 Laws of Power to know better and people or groups who descended from organised kingdoms know as well. Adapt to survive or perish!

Obanikoro, Ogunlewe even your darling Atiku are just trying to survive in the 'modern day court'. That isnt betrayal but adaptation.

But to betray isnt just about a tribe and neither is cowardice.

A Yoruba leader will rather stay to fight and die than run away.

Check: Afonja fought till death than bow down to his jihadist attackers. Awolowo fought his fight and got prison term. Akintola confronted the igbo soldiers and was summarily executed when overpowered(the only person that did that). Idiagbon returned from Saudi Arabia to face his detractors. Abiola returned to face imminent dangers when he could had hid abroad. Obasanjo came back home to face a kangaroo trial at the risk of his neck. Gani Adams and Fasheun did not run away but stood to fight and won. Gani Fawehinmi, Beko, Abraham Adesanya stood to fight. Saraki returned home to face his people.

Examples aboveis a pattern of valor, fidelity and steadfastness to a cause when they believed in it.

Betrayal isnt when you no longer believe in a cause and make a change or disagrees with something but it is when, you helped to truncate a free and fair election as Nzeribe amd co from the east did in 1993, like when Zik blocked Awo secession move in 1957, like what Okadigbo did to Zik in the 2nd republic, like when igbos dump Ekuweme in 1999, like Ojukwu wanted to rule a Nigeria he didnt want, like Kanu inconsistencies lately, the list are endless.

Ogunlewe, Obanikoro etc just returned to the fold that made them popular in the first place. Obanikoro was invited home from America by late Prince Adeniji-Adele and the likes of Tinubu to become our mayor. They cant go far from the main ibile group.

Leave our brothers alone. They have only came home to roost

This is absolutely wrong, since she was given the title of iyaloja by Ọba Akinolu, she can not enforce her authority over places that are not under the Dominion of Ọba of Lagos, he authority should not go beyond Lagos Island, there is nothing like Iyaloja general, what will the iyoloja of ikorodu, EPE and Badagry now be or do, this is wrong if the state house of assembly passed any law to back this abnormally, the court should be approached, it's high time real indigenous people of Lagos steps in, this their silence and I don't care attitude will keep on costing them their real place in Lagos politics, you can't impose people to be collecting money on your behalf in places that is not under your dominion.
Which real indigenous Lagosians are you talking about?

You should know that in all yorubaland the markets has always belonged to the kings or the Baales as the case may be. And the iyaloja and iyalode are titled chieftancy titles conferred on imminent indigenous women who are in most cases of noble births or conferred on eminent settlers who have contributed to commerce in the communities.

These women's title are not honorary as they also attend the king's council meetings. Its only the male equivalent that is a modern day introduction.

And the titles could be hereditary at times. Folashade inherited the title from her grandma. We have iyaloja in the different locales on Lagos Island. She is not the iyaloja of Lagos Island and neither was Abibatu Mogaji her grandma in her lifetime but the head of all iyalojas in Lagos state. Its a chieftancy affairs beyond the comprehension of non yorubas and non indigenes.

There is a head of Olode, Araba, herbalist, artisans etc. Maybe you are not aware there is also a leading baale to the other baales?

Folashade is worthy of the title by virtue of being the granddaughter of Abibatu Mogaji than being Tinubu's daughter. If you know the mama you wont question her installation. Jagaban too made a name because of her if you care to know. We used to know him as Omo Alhaja before he became what he is.

Folashade is worthy of the title, if its just by imposition she would have died long ago to be receiving the homages of the older market women.

It's d same way a doctor can be removed from the medical register in sane countries for being drunk while on duty.
No doubt about that. The section of the armed forces act on drunkeness could even got him jailed. And I'm sure he cant escape this either.

What if some form of drugs had been inserted in his drinks without him knowing? You know some of these guys like free drinks.

But quickly hitting the social media with this is also evil. The owner of that shop whose voice could be identified in the video has not done well either.

You're just so pathetic.

You always wish to cover up truths so as to continue portraying yourselves as who and what you are not.

Hypocritical fellow, hypocritical region, hypocritical religion.

Nonsense and APC.

grin
The maker of the video is wrong and ought to be sued by the Navy and even the man himself. Imagine the outrage that would have followed if it was the other way round. Men in uniform are citizens too and covered by the same rights civilians quickly brandish in their faces.

She knew Mohammed is from the warri naval as she claimed in the video. She could have gone there and I'm sure the naval authorities will surely deal with it appropriately. According to the armed forces act it is a punishable offence to be drunk wether on duty or not. It means even wherever you may be either in uniform or not.

And bringing it down to quota is evil, mischievous and tribalistic. All sections of Nigeria have their own 'Mohammed' in one of the uniformed services and the civil service. This will disappear when we start selecting based on merit.

But then Mohammed may have passed the screening tests at the point of entry and he may be going through some form of depression lately which the naval authority may not be aware of lately.

Subjecting him to such public ridicule is inhuman and a violation of his right to personal dignity. That guy needs our help not mockery.

You are sure right on point. Few among them continue to destroy the goodwill they ought to enjoy from the host communities.

And at the same time they failed to understand their hosts. There are lots of other tribes like the binis, nupes, ebira, hausas, fulanis, ijaws, itsekiris and others that have been living among the yoruba communities for centuries and have even metamorphosed into the yoruba ethnic group. Thus swelling the population of the yorubas and bringing in some forms of diversities and beauty into our mainstream colouration.

Funny enough, this people dont make noise but are seen as representive of the yoruba group.

Stanweezy:
They don rig Mrs Orji out, did you hear the word "over voting" been the reason the first ballot was cancelled. Clearly that federal constituency seat is meant for her but they rigged her out due to she's not an indigen.

She comfortably won that seat in 2015 general election even when Lagos was APC controlled state. Mind you that area is populated by non-indigens of Lagos particularly people from Eastern Nigeria.
Yes there is a significant population of non-indigenes in the area but they are mostly people of Urhobo, Ijaw, Kwale, Itsekiri, Isoko, Ibibio, Efiks and other groups of the niger delta area and Edo state than of her own linguistic group, the Ibo. Some Yoruba speaking people voted for her as well cos everyone was tired of the non performance of Adenekan Taiwo, an indigene and her slogan then was Boluwatife which she claimed as her middle name.

But with an heavyweight like HKT and the chest-beating by mainly ibos who claimed her victory in 2015 as theirs and calling the yorubas names both online and offline changed the mindsets of many indigenes[like myself] and the yorubas who earlier rooted for her in 2015.

One thing many people failed to understand about the yorubas is that they can be so patient and very formidable to exact their revenge or defend themselves especially when having a vanguard ahead of them. Like it took them their fourth attempt to crush the rampaging Fulani jihad army in the 19th century. Settlements then followed but hostilities ended with the installation of an emir whose mother was yoruba and not British intervention as some claimed. Even the emir was sent packing in 1936 and he fled to Kaduna. The recent crumbling of the Saraki dynasty is another recent example.

A tribe of the Ibo online chest beaters most of whom I doubt live in Lagos nor were born here contributed to Rita's defeat. Many tribes voted for her back then but you all suddenly made it an Ibo thing. The ibos I grew up behaved differently I wonder where this group of people sprang from.

Enough of the spread of hate before the inferno will consume other well meaning ibos in this part. Lest you guys forget your Joe Igbokwe's appointment at the federal level is a slot of Lagos State. Is it that we dont have eligible indigene or other Yorubas to fill it?

Think about this before you guys start another rounds of hate.

Enough is enough.
