I spent today in Delaware discussing emergency response for natural disasters like the hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes we've seen recently.

Disaster response is an area where Facebook is in a unique position to help keep our community safe. We've built three important tools that are used widely in disasters:

1. Safety Check. This asks people in a disaster area if they're safe, and then notifies their friends and family immediately. When someone you care about is potentially in danger, the first thing you want to know is that they're safe. This uses our location data and network to do this. In the last few years, it has notified people more than 2 billion times that people they care about are safe.

2. Community Help. This matches volunteers who can supply food, shelter, or other resources with people in a disaster area who need help. We just launched this and we'll add more ways for people to volunteer and help over time.

3. Fundraising Tools. This enables anyone on Facebook to raise money for non-profits simply by posting and tagging organizations. After Hurricane Harvey, members of our community raised more than $17 million for relief on Facebook. That's one of the fundraising efforts for relief in history.
On this trip, I stopped by the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) HQ and discussed ways we could coordinate better with Governor Carney and members of their team.

I also met with academics studying disaster response and leaders of local non-profits. They shared interesting research around how regular members of communities often have more capacity to provide relief efforts than the formal relief organizations.

For example, they told me about the Cajun Navy -- an informal group from the Louisiana Bayous who got on their motor boats after Harvey flooded Houston and started rescuing people in the flooded streets of Houston. They told me how after 9/11 in New York City, a makeshift armada of civilian boats -- motor boats, dinner cruise ships, yachts, etc -- helped people get off Manhattan and in many cases get back home to New Jersey or other places.

These stories make it clear there's even more we can do to help our community work together in disasters to keep us all safe. This is historically work that only governments and non-profits would do, but we're in a new world and there is an important role for internet communities to help here too.

Brazil superstar Neymar earns just over three million euros a month at Paris Saint-Germain, according to German magazine Der Spiegel.

The magazine, using Football Leaks as a source, claims the 25-year-old Neymar, who cost PSG 222 million euros ($265m) from Barcelona, earns 36.8 million euros per year — a monthly salary of exactly 3,069,520 euros.

The Spiegel claims Neymar earned 54 million euros at Barcelona last season, 8.5 million more than Lionel Messi, considered one of the world’s best — and highest paid — players alongside Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

A new earthquake has sowed panic in Mexico City , forcing a brief pause in rescue operations to free survivors from the more powerful tremor this week that devastated parts of the capital.

The latest quake, with a magnitude of 6.1, was smaller and further south than the 7.1-magnitude one that struck on Tuesday, killing more than 300 people and toppling 39 buildings in the capital.

As an alarm sounded, hundreds of startled residents raced out into the street, some barefoot, some carrying children.

Two women died of heart attacks as they tried to leave their homes, according to local media reports. One was in her 80s and the other was 52, according to the website of the daily Reforma.

Authorities said two people also died in the quake in the southern state of Oaxaca, where the epicenter was located..

A bridge collapsed near the town of Juchitan, Oaxaca, already hit hard by a September 7 quake that killed nearly 100 people. Some buildings with previous damage collapsed.

In a jittery Mexico City, the quake made buildings sway, but some didn’t notice.

This time, we didn’t feel the ground move… maybe since the last one we’re getting used to them,” said Pablo Martinez, who had run out of his apartment building with his six-year-old daughter in his arms.

The new tremor sparked concern it could have caused heavy rubble on top of survivors awaiting rescue in the capital to shift — posing a danger both to those trapped and to rescuers.

Rescue crews quickly evacuated five sites in the capital where they had been working.

They hesitated for a couple of hours, discussing the added risk, before going back in to look for survivors.

Mexico City’s mayor, Miguel Angel Mancera, told Televisa television that around “30 people may yet be able to be found in this search and rescue operation.”

So far, 69 people have been pulled alive from the rubble in Mexico City, according to authorities.

Facebook CEO "Mark Zukerberg" is ready to contribute 1$ million to Cruz Roja Mexicana Sede Nacional to support the relief efforts on the ground.

Hurricane Max slammed into Mexico's southern Pacific coast last week Thursday, dumping rain on an area east of the resort city of Acapulco before rapidly weakening into a tropical storm as it moved inland into Guerrero state.

The coastline where Max made landfall is sparsely populated and dotted with fishing villages.

Guerrero Gov. Hector Astudillo warned that the rains would continue all night. Near Acapulco, the government worked frantically to widen a channel to the sea to prevent a coastal lagoon from flooding.

At least 248 people are dead after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit Mexico on Tuesday causing widespread devastation across Mexico City where a school has collapsed.

Twenty children and two adults were confirmed dead after being found in the debris of the Enrique Rebsamen school, with a further 30 children and eight adults still missing as of 2am Wednesday.

The confirmed death toll passed 700 and more than a million were driven from their homes as large swathes of South Asia reeled under monsoon floods Sunday, officials said.

At least 100 deaths were reported overnight across India and Bangladesh following the latest in a series of deluges since August 10, as the annual monsoon hit the north and east of the region.

Anirudh Kumar, a top disaster management official in India’s eastern state of Bihar, said 53 bodies were recovered as water levels started to recede in some areas. “The total death toll stands at 205,” Kumar told AFP. Nearly 400,000 people were staying in state-run shelters, with an estimated 10 million affected by the deluge, the worst since 2008 when nearly 300 people were killed.

Some 10,000 emergency workers and soldiers were supporting local officials in relief and rescue operations. In neighbouring Uttar Pradesh state 69 deaths were reported as two million residents remain affected by the floods.

Nearly half of the 75 districts in the state have been hit by the floods and authorities are seeking military help to evacuate people in at least two districts.

Both the states border Nepal, which was also hit by landslides and floods that killed 135 people. Another 30 are reported to be missing.

At least 20 percent of the 28 million people in the landlocked Himalayan state are affected by what the United Nations has called the worst floods to hit the country for 15 years.

In India’s eastern state of West Bengal and in the remote northeastern state of Assam, 122 people have died with nearly three million affected by floods.

More than 450,000 people were living in relief camps in Assam after the second wave of floods to hit the state in less than four months. The deluge has badly damaged railways and roads.

‘Situation improving’
Three more bodies were retrieved in a northern village in West Bengal state, where 55 people have now died. More than a million have been affected, although officials say the situation is fast improving.

In Bangladesh at least 115 people have died and some 5.7 million people have been affected by the floods, Shamim Naznin, head of the control room at the department of disaster management, told AFP.

She said 31 of the country’s 64 districts have been hit by the floods, forcing nearly 300,000 people to flee their homes and take refuge in makeshift shelters.

The state flood forecasting and warning centre said some 30 percent of the country has been inundated, the worst flooding for a decade. But the situation in the country’s north and west was improving quickly because the level of major rivers was falling fast, officials said.

Every year hundreds die in landslides and floods during the monsoon season that hits India’s southern tip in early June and sweeps across South Asia for four months.

A massive landslide in India’s Himachal Pradesh state swept two passenger buses off a hillside, killing 46 people on August 13. Eight others, including two soldiers, were killed in Uttarakhand state in landslides on Monday.

Nearly 350 people died in the first wave of floods that began in mid-July in India’s western states of Gujarat and Rajasthan and several remote northeastern states.
