Because for so long, he made her feel like she was so hard to love, she was so hard to understand, and she was so hard to be with. If you and your girl are fighting and you're on the brink of breaking up, as the boyfriend, you can't allow that to happen. If you love her, you don't let her go. Even if she wants you to. Obviously, you can't force her to be with you if she truly doesn't want to be, but you need to at least try to save the relationship. You need to at least try to get thru to her and have her have a change of heart. You need to at least try to reassure her that everything will be okay because at least, you'll be able to say you tried. But damn, you don't just easily let go of the girl you love and give up on her like that.
