A Nigerian, Babajide Oluwaseyi, recently distinguished herself and her country at the University of Birmingham's graduation ceremony, emerging as the top student in her class.

As a Master's degree graduate, she stands among her peers as a beacon of excellence and resilience.

In her inspiring graduation speech, she detailed the unique challenges she faced due to a visual degenerative condition, which necessitated dedicating double the usual time to her studies and assignments.

Her difficulty in reading notices and signs further compounded these challenges. Despite these hurdles, her journey exemplifies unwavering perseverance and tenacity.

Concluding her address, she encouraged her fellow graduates to become agents of positive change in the world and urged them to transcend any limitations they may encounter. Commenting on her speech the school Chancellor commended her inspiring speech and referred the graduates to imbibe all points raised in Oluwaseyi's speech.

If you are good and fair offline, you can never need to seek relationships online no matter how ugly, poor, or deformed you are. I stand to be corrected if you think I'm wrong on this.
I have a contrary opinion. I think every community should be sane enough to welcome people, irrespective of there look, whether online or offline. A part of the man might be disabled but the mental state of a non- welcoming community is even more disabled.

I support this totally. The world is focusing too much on productivity to justify remuneration at the expense of work-life balance which is the essence of existence. Even nature itself is an evidence of balance, no season lasts forever.

I understand what constitute the informal sector. A house help a market woman selling fish and Maggie also constitute the informal sector. You just jump to selling plank 20 million per day...Calm down oga.
So you want me to explain this part
It is informal sector but the turnover is huge, does that not tell you that there are people that make far less? Now that you and I have agreed on what constitute informal sector. If the informal sector can boast of individuals with large income brackets or business turnover, is that not a good source of revenue? Should the government turn a blind sight to that?
I can tell you from experience that, most times, it is not the money from the people selling maggi, small small pepper cowbell etc does not justify the cost of payment enforcement. Most times, it is the amount of relatives or like-businesses that comes into tax net from such drive that makes the whole process profitable. The whole idea is for businesses to be more fiscally responsible and be aware of prevailing tax laws and how they can even take advantages of tax reliefs for their businessses.
Politics / Re: VAT Direct Initiative: Facts About The FIRS - MATAN Partnership by tejpot(m): 4:06pm On Jul 04, 2023
loswhite:
Go and check for the definition of informal sectors. The Government failure is responsible for the informal sector. The government cannot come reap where they did not sow. If you want the informal sector to pay taxes then you must look for a way to incorporate them.
You don't know what constitute the informal sector and I am making sure you understand that. You can decide to check dictionary for informal sector. But a carpenter selling 2 by 10 plank in sawmill and making up to 20 million a day is informal sector by virtue of that business. It is informal sector but the turnover is huge. On the other hand, you don't get to decide for the government where they will collect tax, the law has given them that power. So its not what you and I think. Its what the law says.

Is there no minimum income bracket for taxes
What do the informal sector people get for paying taxes, and the tax collected on their behalf from businesses and the federal allocation plus loans?

Do they get free education and basic healthcare
When the informal sector is mentioned, it does not normally translate to low income earners. Some of this informal sector business owners turnover in millions daily. But because the system is not structured to accommodate them or lack of database in general, many operate without remitting their taxes. Anyone going into business must be aware of the relevant tax laws applicable to their business.
Like I said in an earlier post, tax law is not conditional, you don't predicate your payment on how well the government use the fund. Even though it may sound logical to say, but when the law finds you wanting, thats not an acceptable excuse legally. It is also within the right of every tax payer to continually demand for government accountability.

As stated in the write up, the informal sector is simply a vehicle for VAT remittance. In this case, they are acting as agents of collection.

Reinaldo:

Tax the hungry. Well done
Tax assessment to informal sector is commiserate with gross income. Many of them are even exempt from tax payment as long as their Gross income is less than 300k based on the 2021 financial act. Meanwhile the informal sector also rakes in millions per day. Some of the businesses are not for poor or hungry people.

What are they doing for the informal sector?
Tax as a civic responsibility and law is not conditional. There is no 'if I don't get this from government, I won't pay'. Because if it is established that there is tax avoidance, there is a penalty. Having said that, it is the responsibility of government to make judicious use of tax collected for the benefit of all.
