Citizens Centre for Democratic Governance (CCDG) has applauded the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to suspend the House of Assembly bye-election for Port Harcourt Constituency 3, in Rivers State last Saturday. INEC suspended the process after the election on Saturday was marred by high spate of violence carried out by hoodlums and political thugs allegedly accompanied by security agents. They were said to have stormed different polling units and registration areas to disrupt voting activities and in the process made away with election materials, including smart card readers, ballot papers and ballot boxes. In a statement signed by the national coordinator of CCDG, Anthony Osagbemi, the group commended INEC and advised it to ensure that any election marred by violence should be suspended like the case of the Rivers Bye-election. “We commend INEC … timely intervention of suspending the election which would serve as deterrence to politicians who believe that violence would continue to be a viable election winning strategy in Nigeria. “Our field agents, who were on ground at Port Harcourt the capital Rivers state, visited some polling units to observe the turnout and general process. They confirmed that the election commenced peacefully in all the units, with INEC personnel and materials in sight well ahead of time. However, they lamented the unruly interruption of the process by hoodlums and racketeers accompanied by security agents who stormed different polling units and registration areas to disrupt voting activities and in the process made away with election materials, including smart card readers, ballot papers and ballot boxes. “They also reigned terror, molested and injured many electoral officials, while holding others hostage. “While the blame game continues with the PDP claiming that the APC employed the use of thugs with the support of security operatives to disrupt the election, the APC is also claiming that the PDP employed the help of militants to disrupt the voting exercise, we want to state unequivocally that election is not a do or die affair and this particular election is an example of a joke taken too far. “We condemn in its totality, the actions taking by the two major political parties involved and call on all civil society organization, faith based organizations, ethnic based organizations among others, to rise up against this kind of happenings as it is capable of endangering our democracy. “The law enforcement agencies must investigate this awkward event and punish all officers found guilty. Enough of the use of security operatives as thugs in our elections, enough of using security operatives to intimidate electorate, enough of using thugs to steal ballot boxes and other electoral materials, enough is enough. We are indeed grateful to INEC for taking this bold step that will go a long way to sanitize the electoral system by serving as deterrence to politicians that any election marred with violence shall be cancelled,” the group said. http://thebeaconewsnigeria.com/2018/08/suspension-of-phalga-3-bye-election-group-wants-same-treatment-for-any-violent-election |
TREASURY LOOTING IN NIGERIA: One of the many excuses the military gave as a reason for their intervention in 1966 was the looting of our commonwealth by the politicians. However, much later it was discovered that it was an unfitting label clandestinely-placed on the back of a dog to justify its being slaughtered for pepper soup. Smart military guys. Treasury looting in our society began with the coming of the military in governance. Which is why all the past military administrators and others who held positions of trust then are the present-day billionaires. They dipped their hands into the till as they pleased. Do you remember the term “carton money”? Then auditing in government was largely nonexistent, or a mere formality. The military didn’t consider treasury looting as a crime against the state, to them it was a hobby. And the tin-gods had a field day. Let’s give a standing ovation to the good people and government of Switzerland for their transparency and honesty. See how easily they admitted that our Gen. Sani Abacha really hid some stolen money under their pillow. And on the other hand, they showed express willingness to return the Abacha Loot to us - a whooping sum of 322.5m US Dollar with interest!! Hopefully the money-loving rats and snakes won’t re-loot it. This bold and commendable step taken by the Swiss government will definitely pave the way for other nations of the world who are unnecessarily, foot dragging on the matter to follow this well beaten path by the Swiss. The conditionalities given so far by some of the “keepers” of the money stolen by Gen. Abacha in their custody including some other loots, should be discouraged since such hard conditions may not promote the much desired harmonious coexistence among the comity of nations. Who can remind me the other name for the possessor of a stolen item? Was it not during the days of Gen. M. Buhari that one Dr. Dikko ex Transport Minister cum Chairman, Presidential Taskforce on Rice Importation in the President Shagari era, escaped to London on exile based on allegations of massive treasury looting? KEN SARO-WIWA AND COMDR A.P. DIETE-SPIFF IN HISTORY: It is a truism that “absolute power corrupts absolutely”. During the early days of the military in power, soldiers behaved as though their bodies were made of steel. They carried out their daily routines as if they were gods sent down from Space “in the likeness of men”. There was power- drunkenness. Very visible! However, depending on which part of the fence you sat, they were seen as rescuers, protectors and providers in one breath, and at same time, they behaved like supreme beings on assignment to Planet Earth. Certainly, they always had the last word as they intimidated the general populace and made them feel inadequate and loss of self-esteem. Like with the old Babylonian Emperor who lifted up whomsoever he liked. Gen. Gowon liked Kenule B. Saro-Wiwa and made him the first civilian administrator of Rivers State in 1967 He administered the State from Bonny Island because Port Harcourt the state capital was under siege... still in the hands of the Biafran forces. A little later, there was a change of guard: Lt-Comdr Alfred Papapriye Diete-Spiff a Nouthful naval officer succeeded him from Bonny Camp, Lagos, and assumed duty in Port Harcourt. The commander of the Third Marine Commando Brig. Benjamin Adekunkle a.k.a. Black Scorpion was fully in control at this frontier. Why the nickname “Black Scorpion”? He got the nickname through a casual joke...and it stuck like a leech. Being the leader of the dreaded Third Marine Commando Brig. Benjy Adekunle’s eyes turned green as he got wind of the appointment of the young naval officer. He showed signs of covetousness. There was noticeable bad blood in the system which affected his official performance sooner than later. And he was replaced with military precision. The Black Scorpion was succeeded by Brig. Olusegun Obasanjo. He “degraded, defeated and crushed the rebellion”, and also received the Surrender Document from his opposite number. WHO PEELED OFF THE...PURE-PURE LABEL? I once visited the Agrie Extension office and the Agric Farms at Degema. I was fascinated by what I saw there then. I admired the crops section as well as the animal husbandry and fishery units. Seeing that type of setting for the first time and coupled with the down-to-earth explanations offered by the Farm Guide, my love for agricultural things1 and nature peaked. To date my occupation is farming; writing is my second skin. I had the mind of serving the state in the agriculture and natural resources ministry after that visit. The way to actualise my dream began somewhat lazily. Quite challenging. There is an old multi-storey building standing between the judiciary and the Port Harcourt cit\ council premises. It housed the ministry of establishments at the time. All employable persons of Rivers State origin were meant to register here for consideration and deployment?’H was the state’s database. It worked. After an interview and I was hoping to be posted to my dream ministry. But, fate took a different turn as one Mr. F.F.N. Okere, representing the ministry of information and home affairs ambushed me. and wooed me over. At his 37 Aba Road office (now housing FRSC) I noticed some excitement hanging loosely on his handsome face as we hobbled from one office to another. He has had a fruitful day. His attitude was like that of a village fisherman who caught a big fish...and preferred walking through the village centre to attract public commendations. He introduced me to some information technocrats like Mr. Preye Okosi the director. Others were Olu B. Fubara , Lawrence of Allagoa (popularly known as “Ogidiga”). The rest were Kesiye lyabi, Lyte Kosu, R.R. Igoni, Paul Baridi K. Nalley, H. J.Cookey, Francis B. Orukari, Balafama Banigo, Ephraim Egbu of the home press unit. The Oga at the top here was Ken B. Saro-Wiwa the honourable commissioner. He identified himself with his fellow Ogonis and technically peeled off the derogatory label: “Ogoni pio-pio” THE KEN SARO-WIWA MAGIC “A leader of any group of people is obligated to lift them up from psychological defeatism to sell’ glorification” - K.O. Mbadiwe Former Nigerian Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary When the youthful governor arrived the state for business, he fenced himself round with experienced, elder statesmen as commissioners and special advisors. That decision he took enhanced his job a great deal; his reign was successful. To date the legacy projects of his administration still sing hallelujah to his praise. Then there was this minor cabinet reshuffle which moved Hon. Commissioner Ken Saro-Wiwa from the ministry of information and home affairs on Aba Road to the ministry of education on Ikwerre Road. In those good old days, governors gave free hand to commissioners to run the budget of their various ministries. Is it not an anathema to think anything like that in the present democratic dispensation? Where is the legislative arm of government? It rumours that some elected state executives, for selfish reasons, run the budget for and on behalf of their commissioners. The grumbling commissioners have no alternative view because their greedy principal would not listen. So the fear of their principal is the beginning of wisdom. So. be Sore the honourable commissioner assumed duty at his new duty post, he had what the French call “tete-a-tete” (lets expand its meaning to something close to a town hall meeting) with his Ogoni brethren. And he gave them what the National1 Orientation Agency does not have in its storehouse to give to Nigerians. That dead horse!! He advised them to “kindly accept, don’t fight, when someone calls you ... pure-pure”, he paused. He went further “whenever you resist a derogatory label, then it will stick”. He boasted that “We Ogonis are pure and distinct people... We are not like other tribes or ethnic nationalities in the state. We believe in ourselves”. A standing ovation. They have been converted, and agreed to embark on aggressive evangelism with’ the new gospel. He then moved gracefully over to his new post after giving them the life-changing message. Are your leaders close to you? Have they any good plans for the people? Think!more detail visit http://thebeaconewsnigeria.com/2018/08/food-for-thought-5/ |
Are These Rivers Patriots And Revered (Eminent) Personalities Not Qualified For State Honours? (3) Let me pre-empt those who may want to know what gave rise to the legal/ethical battle tagged “What Did Amakiri Do?” which popularised the Okrika-born “fearless reporter” and journalistic juggernaut by soliciting the assistance of Barrister Chukwuma Chinwo, a Constitutional Law Lecturer, who captured the story in his book, Principles and Practice of Constitutional Law. Hear him: “Amakiri, a journalist had written a report in the Nigerian Observer newspaper titled ‘Rivers State Teachers on War Path’ which was published on the birthday of the Military Governor. He was forcibly taken by the aide de camp (A.D.C) of the governor to the State government house, where at the instruction of the A.D.C. the journalist was shaven and given 24 strokes. The A.D.C further instructed that he should be detained and that nobody should be allowed to see him. He was released after 27 hours under excruciating pain and humiliation. “Amakiri lodged a report to the police for investigation that could lead to criminal prosecution of the A.D.C. for torture of a citizen bordering on gross abuse of power but the police took no action. The Headlines, Daily Times publication, described the incident as ‘Echo of Nazi-style torture camp’. In a civil action against the A.D.C., the Plaintiff claimed for false imprisonment, assault and battery. On behalf of the Plaintiff it was contended that these acts were unlawful and illegal but the Defendant pleaded justification. The court firmly and uncompromisingly denounced the arbitrary exercise of power and emphasized that no one was above the law. It held the defendant vicariously liable for the actions of the soldier that he gave the orders to torture and who tortured the plaintiff. The trial judge concluded by saying that, ‘the courts are the watchdogs of these (fundamental human) rights and the sanctuary of the oppressed and will spare no pains in tracking down the arbitrary use of power where such cases are brought before the court’ “. Though the man Minere spent only 63 years on earth, the elephantine image he left behind looms larger than the profession he laid his life for. Simple but with substantial substance; behind his gappy toothed smile is a heart of steel and his punchy pen is the lethal weapon that sent shivers down the spine of spineless dictators. He never suffered fools gladly. He hated oppression under any guise. He was a statesman per excellence. He was a proper patriot (unlike many of his contemporaries who were lily-livered, pretender patriots). For the unfeigned love he had for Rivers State in particular and Nigeria in general, the crusader for justice dared the political lions in their lairs, never afraid of the catastrophic consequences of his “foolhardiness”. He deserved all the encomia showered on him by both friends and foes, mourners and mockers, admirers and attackers, etc during his funeral. One of the most captivating tributes was sent in by the then President of the Rivers State Customary Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice P.N.C Agumagu. On behalf of the Judiciary he writes: “News of the demise of Minere Amakiri the quintessential publisher of our time, accomplished media practitioner, astute lion hearted author, writer, editor and publisher of the popular tabloid ‘THE BEACON NEWSPAPERS’, came to us as a rude shock. “The history of the torturous journey of the growth of journalism in Rivers State, Nigeria and the world at large will be incomplete if no mention is made of this brilliant and dogged writer -Minere Amakiri, of the ‘What Did Amakiri Do?’ fame. The exit of this colossus of the journalism profession, this fearless writer that has dared the lion in its den severally, this disciple of truth, this crusader and defender of the rights of the oppressed, this voice of the voiceless, this eye and ear of the physically challenged, and the wretched of the earth will remain regrettable”. To Professor G.O.M. Tasie, Minere Amakiri is “a man of uncommon courage, clear in the eye and even much clearer in his head and thoughts; a remarkably detribalized journalist who is well known for his commitment to objectivity, much unlike some of his colleagues who are better known for jaundiced, tribal or praise-singing journalism”. Of Amakiri, Professor Sylvanus J.S. Cookey has this to say: “His thoughts and deeds were potently and patently displayed as a consummate and dedicated exponent of the best in journalism. He was an avowed custodian of the public interest and would not compromise with those who heedlessly trampled upon it. He believed in the accountability of the powerful few to the suffering masses. His ‘Beacon’ charted the way to a just society where the welfare of all should be the abiding concern of those entrusted with public office. Only few harkened and his principled stance probably cost him a fortune. That mattered but little. For Minere, the truth had to be written regardless of personal cost-it was far more important than temporal rewards”. Finally, let’s find out from a man who knew Minere in “flesh and blood” and a beneficiary of the latter’s ‘’largesse” what “this voice of the voiceless” will be mostly remembered for. If you like call it legacy. “Minere Amakiri gave Rivers People a voice. When he realised that being a reporter would not be enough as the Lagos press, the so-called ‘National’ Media demonstrated clearly that they were in Rivers State to make money and were ready only to publish what the Commissioners for Information and Press Secretaries wanted, he stepped up and established the Beacon. It became the real voice of Rivers People who could not pay to be heard” (Chukwuma Chinwo). http://thebeaconewsnigeria.com/2018/08/are-these-rivers-patriots-and-revered-eminent-personalities-not-qualified-for-state-honours-3/ |
I’m Considering A Run Against Him In 2019— Saraki SENATE PRESIDENT BUKOLA SARAKI SAYS HE IS SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING RUNNING AGAINST PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI IN 2019. SARAKI MADE THIS KNOWN TO BLOOMBERG IN AN INTERVIEW. THIS DEVELOPMENT IS COMING ON THE HEELS OF RISING SPECULATIONS ABOUT THE PROSPECT OF A SARAKI PRESIDENTIAL RUN FUELLED BY HIS VISITS TO EX-PRESIDENT OLUSEGUN OBASANJO AND FORMER HEAD OF STATE, IBRAHIM BABANGIDA. “I AM CONSULTING AND ACTIVELY CONSIDERING IT… I BELIEVE I CAN MAKE THE CHANGE,” HE WAS QUOTED TO HAVE SAID. “THE PDP HAS LEARNT ITS LESSON FROM THE LOSS IN 2015, AND I THINK UNFORTUNATELY THE APC DID NOT LEARN FROM THEIR VICTORY. “WHILE NEGOTIATING WITH THE PDP, WE LISTED A NUMBER OF ISSUES. WE TALKED ABOUT HOW TO SUSTAIN AND IMPROVE THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION; THE ISSUE OF PROVIDING MORE POWERS TO THE STATES; INCLUSION AND HAVING A MORE NATIONALISTIC APPROACH ON THINGS WE DO; TO CONTINUE TO IMPROVE THE ENVIRONMENT THAT WILL ENSURE INVESTMENTS. “WE LISTED A NUMBER OF ITEMS DURING THE DISCUSSIONS WITH THE PDP, AND THERE IS A WRITTEN AGREEMENT TO THAT. WE TRUST THAT WE CAN HOLD THEM TO THAT. “WE WOULD ENSURE THAT THE PARTY IS STRONG ON SECURITY. THE APC TOO HAVE NOT DONE WELL ON THE ISSUE OF SECURITY. WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY WITH THE RIGHT KIND OF PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE AND PRESIDENT TO PROVIDE THE LEADERSHIP FOR THE PARTY. THE PARTY HAS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO LEAD THE COUNTRY IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.” HE ALSO SPOKE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE SERVICES (DSS) SIEGE TO THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, FEARING THAT IT PORTENDED DANGER TO NEXT YEAR’S ELECTIONS. “IF A GOVERNMENT CAN GO AND LOCK UP AN ARM OF GOVERNMENT — AND IT’S NEVER HAPPENED IN OUR HISTORY — WE SHOULD ALL BE VERY CONCERNED… WE SHOULD NOT BE SURPRISED THAT THEY WOULD USE SECURITY AGENCIES FOR ELECTIONS,” SARAKI SAID..MORE DETAIL http://thebeaconewsnigeria.com/2018/08/ill-make-a-better-president-than-buhari-im-considering-a-run-against-him-in-2019-saraki/ |
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has revealed what he described as “an evil pact between Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and the Senator representing Rivers South East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Abe,” over the 2023 governorship. Eze, who said he was responding to recent media attacks against him by the social media team of Sen. Abe, claimed that the pact is to make Abe a governorship candidate in 2023. He claimed that this would be achieved by first weakening the Rivers State chapter of APC and reducing the influence and powers of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, erstwhile governor of Rivers State and incumbent Minster of Transportation. “In my recent press statements which resulted in the media attack against my person and personality by the Magnus Governorship Campaign Organisation Social Media Team, I exposed how Distinguished Senator Magnus Abe connived with some influential All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftains to sabotage the electoral fortunes of the party and its candidate, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside, in the 2015 governorship election. “Instead of Abe’s Social Media Team addressing the salient issues that I raised, they came after my person and integrity. What was my ‘sin’? In my press statements, I posited that Peterside emerged to fly the flag of APC during the 2015 general elections based on the exigency of the upland and riverine dichotomy and the injustice visited on the riverine section of Rivers State by denying them the topmost seat in Rivers State these past twenty years. “I explained that it was to assuage the fact of neglect of the riverine area as the upland had consistently governed Rivers State for 20 years through Dr. Peter Odili, Chibuike Amaechi and Nyesom Wike, that APC elected Peterside to fly her flag. Eze said the assumption he is under anybody’s payroll, only showed attackers as persons not after justice, equity and fairness but pretenders whose sole aim in the politics of Rivers State is pursuance of their wicked plot to cause disunity and disharmony among APC members. “I reiterate that Senator Magnus Abe is my personal friend and associate and whom I have in the past, promoted in various ways, his political aspiration. I have nothing against his political aspiration but committed to correcting the prodigious, devious and erroneous impression being peddled on daily basis against the Rivers State APC and its leader, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. Eze maintained that despite unwarranted abuses over his stand on justice and equity in Rivers politics, he would not be intimidated or frustrated out of his chosen task of stating the facts. Eze, who restated that Senator Abe is entitled to pursue his ambition, however, said that doing so by running down the very institution that he intends to use to actualise his aspiration was most unfortunate and sad. “The fact remains that every effort was made to accommodate Abe and his supporters in the conduct of the Congresses in Rivers State but that Senator Abe and his Team were not interested in the party holding a peaceful congress. Abe has shown sufficient reason to question his loyalty to APC. Today Abe has dragged the party to court without first exploring every internal conflict resolution mechanism as contained in the party’s constitution. Today Abe has set up a parallel state secretariat when there is no factional state party executive. How else can someone show disloyalty and disrespect to a group he claims to belong? Eze reasoned that Abe has shown sufficient evidence that he is working in tandem and in liaison with Governor Nyesom Wike’s to ruin APC and possibly prevent the party from presenting a governorship candidate in the 2019 election. Wike understands that an APC governorship will sack him from the Brick House in 2019. “To add to that, Abe already parades himself as the “next governor of Rivers State” even when he knows that his pact with Wike is for him(Abe) to run in 2023 with Wike’s support. Eze noted that the goal is to humiliate Amaechi but God will never allow the evil pact to make Governor Wike to continue with his shameless and purposeless administration till 2023 to materialise when he intends to relinquish power to Senator Abe...more detail http://thebeaconewsnigeria.com/2018/08/rivers-apc-chief…023-governorship/ |
…..Say They Don’t Even Enjoy Partial Loyalty From The Police. The thirty- six state governors, under the aegis of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Tuesday disclosed that as governors, they have collectively spent about N2 trillion on the Nigeria Police Force in the last decade. According to the NGF, the money spent by the governors was to augment police operations nationwide, just as it revealed that Lagos state alone under Governor Akinwunmi Ambode spent the sum of N4.76 billion on the police in 2015. In a statement Tuesday in Abuja by the Head, Media and Public Affairs of NGF, Abdulrazaque Barkindo, the forum stressed that the N2 trillion does not include the extra contributions of Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe states, hitherto referred to as the frontline states having virtually been the theatres of war and critical flash-points at the peak of the war against insurgency in the North east especially. Meanwhile, the forum is insisting on state police as the way forward to the nation’s security challenges, adding that the said amount is part of a research conducted by the media department of the NGF and published in its July edition of the Forums Secretariat’s monthly magazine “The Executive Summary.” It pointed out that the magazine, which accompanied its story with an expenditure table of some of the purchases and donations made to the police by more than twenty of the states, also quoted the lamentations of some of the state governors who in spite of these donations have been unable to enjoy even the partial loyalty of the federal police at their most critical hour of need. According to the statement, the purchases by the governors covered such items as Hilux trucks, Armoured Personnel carriers, Helicopters, River Gun Boats, Horses, Communication equipment, uniforms and handcuffs among others. The statement said, “For example, the magazine which has as its cover story ‘State Police: The Time is Now,’ related that in 2015 alone Lagos State under Governor Akinwunmi Ambode spent over N4.765bn on helping to sustain the Federal Police.” According to the report, in subsequent years going forward, the state also bought and donated to the police, 100 4-door Saloon cars, 55 Ford Ranger Pick-up trucks, 10 Toyota Landcruiser Pick-up trucks, 15 BMW power-bikes, 100 Isuzu trucks, three helicopters, two gunboats, 15 Armoured Personnel Carriers, revolving lights, sirens, communication gadgets, helmets, handcuffs among many other police requirements. Looking at the donations in retrospect, Governor Ambode’s predecessor, Babatunde Raji Fashola also donated 50 patrol vehicles, 10 Armoured Personnel carriers, 100 walkie-talkies and 200 bullet-proof jackets apart from the establishment of an ICT Resource Centre for the police in Lagos State The statement stressed further that it is not Lagos alone that has donated generously to the police as Kano, Kaduna, Kwara, Cross River, Ebonyi and Abia States have all, at various times, donated generously to the police force towards ensuring the safety and security of their peoples and their property. The statement added: “Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State, for example, was quoted as having said that ‘I am sitting here as governor, but I cannot control one police troop whenever crises break in my state.’ “His Zamfara State counterpart and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar had, at one time, even relinquished his position as the Chief Security Officer of his state, in frustration.” The report further said even Benue State, which, very recently had its state assembly sealed and overtaken by the Nigeria Police Force had spent a substantial part of its security vote in ameliorating the problems of the same police force that was to later humiliate the state. The governors however, through the Nigeria Governors’ Forum have viewed this situation as absolutely unacceptable. According to the statement, it is for these and several other reasons that the governors have been agitating for the creation of state police so that the safety of lives and property in the country would be firmly rested in the hands of those who spend their resources in sustaining the police force, adding, “Indeed, to give spice to the argument for the agitation of the states, the National Assembly only recently lent its voice to the agitation by state governors and also endorsed the formation of state police, saying it is about time. “Most others who canvas the same position as the governors allude to the countries whose system Nigeria is emulating, saying community policing is a necessity if crime is to be prevented and insurgency curtailed to the barest minimum. “However, in response to those who argue that governors would abuse the privilege if given, Governor Mohammed Abdullahi of Bauchi State argued that those who hold that view are fearful because they have restricted their thinking to building individuals rather than building institutions. “In July 2017 the Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris approached the Nigeria Governors’ Forum at their meeting in Aso Rock Villa seeking cap-in-hand, the sum of N3trillion as assistance from states.” The magazine recalled that most states of the federation have already resorted to supporting vigilante groups and some have even gone further to establish various types of self-help security formations like the Bakasi Boys in Abia, KAI in Lagos, Civilian JTF in the northeast, Karota in Kano and several others that fill the vacuum created by the absence of the federal police in their respective states. http://thebeaconewsnigeria.com/2018/08/over-n2trillion-…-from-the-police/ |
Voting is an act or instance of participating in such a choice e.g. v>y submitting a ballot. To cast a vote, is to assert a formalized choice in an election. Without credible election there is no need for democracy. This is because electorate is the major stakeholders in any transparent and credible elections in democracy. The atmosphere of rigging and snatching of ballot boxes and papers of political thugs are obvious in Nigerian elections. The undemocratic practice during democracy has battered the image. real democracy in Nigeria. And that has caused delay in the development of democracy in Nigeria. The latest development during election in Nigeria is known as vote buying. This is a situation where rich politicians or political parties give money in exchange of votes. Vote buying became glaring during Ekiti’s state governorship election held recently. It was reported that electorate sold this votes for five thousand and f;our thousand naira. INEC in reacting to development of vote buying was quoted as saying that politicians cannot bribe the umpire and manipulate the system hence have resort to vote buying from the electorate to win election in Nigeria. Yes, vote buying seems simple, but the implication is the state of mind of the electorate who needs the least money to quench the pressure of hunger in the land. The question is will politicians go out with money to lure the electorate against their will? In the same vein, why the electorates sell their birth right because of five thousand naira porridge. The new trend in Nigeria’s democracy is dehumanizing, a situation where the people in government have impoverished the masses only to recognize them on the day of election is inimical to material and human development. Vote buying is enticing the electorate with money to scuttle Their original decision for voting. The development seems to be attracting serious attention across the country. Few weeks ago, INEC arrested some people in Ekiti state in the name of vote buying. This strategy of winning election by vote buying is rapidly gaining ground, as many politicians and political parties are to flout the money to the electorate. Will this also enter the commodity market as it is spreading like wild fire:? Vote buying will ruin the credibility and dignity of the electorate when it comes to demanding good governance from the political leaders in the country.more detail http://thebeaconewsnigeria.com/2018/08/effects-of-vote-…igeria-democracy/ |

MR MINERE AMAKIRI (1948-2011) To those numerous Nigerians (especially those outside the “Pen Profession” and the younger generation) who don’t know the man, aptly described by Retired CSP Uche Mike Chukwuma as “one of the greatest heroes of the Pen Profession” in Nigeria, it is my honour to introduce the Man, his Mission, Monumental Accomplishments and Legacies. All these are captured in his funeral service programme under the heading, Biography. Read on. “Veteran journalist, ace reporter, celebrated correspondent, media consultant and fearless Newspaper publisher and proprietor, Mr Minere Amakiri, cut his teeth in the journalism profession at DRUM Magazine, where he began his long chequered journalism career in 1967. “As a young reporter for the South Africa based Magazine, Mr Amakiri came under the tutelage of the late Mr Nelson Otah, one of Nigeria’s foremost and most highly respected pioneer journalists, who was the then Editor of the Magazine. Discovering the potential in the young reporter, and in order to enable him fine-tune his journalistic prowess, Mr Otah ensured that Mr Amakiri underwent several in-service courses in reputable newspaper establishments both inside and outside of Nigeria. That was the standard practice in those days and it exposed a journalist not only to writing, but also to editing, production, and all the processes for producing and publishing quality journals. He also contributed regularly to the “Lagos Weekend” a weekly newspaper in the Daily Times stable. “With a Diploma in Journalism which he obtained from Bennett College, Sheffield England, Mr Amakiri soon became one of the best known journalists in Nigeria. The Nigeria Civil War involuntarily severed his rewarding relationship with DRUM Magazine in 1968. “In the same year, however, the Overseas Press Services (OPS), based in Owerri engaged his services as a war correspondent. It was during his stint at OPS that Mr Amakiri made the acquaintance of the world -renowned journalist and author Fredrick Forsythe and Mr Ironkwe, Reuters Chief correspondent in Owerri. Others whose acquaintance and professional expertise rubbed off on him were Mr Boniface Ofokaja, and Chief Victor Effiong, now of the NTA. “Mr Amakiri’s reputation as a fearless correspondent whose reports captured the facts and essence of events soon attracted the attention of many Editors in the country who coveted the daring, punchy, and matter-of-fact style of this young journalist. He thus made his berth at the OBSERVER Newspaper, a daily publication of the then Midwest Newspaper Corporation. He was the Newspaper’s Chief Correspondent in Rivers State in 1971. Several of his reports and stories made the Newspaper’s front page, thus making the OBSERVER the most authoritative and best read newspaper in the country at that time. It was little wonder therefore, that in 1973, the then military dictatorship, ill at ease with press and individual freedom as enshrined in the suspended constitution of the country took offence at Mr Amakiri’s probing style of news reporting. The outcome of that encounter in 1973 is now part of the history of the fight for press freedom not only in Nigeria, but in developing countries world-wide. “Mr Amakiri’s contribution to that fight popularly referred to as “What Did Amakiri Do?” is recorded in the land-mark judgment delivered in the celebrated case which involved him and the Rivers State Government of then Commander Alfred Diete Spiff. That judgment handed down by then Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Ambrose Allagoa is now a case study on press freedom in the Law faculties of our universities. Energetic, scrupulously attentive to the fine points of the profession and zealous in his defence of its ethics, Mr. Amakiri soon launched himself into publishing and editing. His newspaper, The Beacon, which he singlehandedly founded and nurtured into a respectable paper that has become compulsory reading for the general public in Rivers State, remains a fitting monument to his dedication and love for the profession. “Mr Amakiri is one of the few surviving members of the first generation of journalists who pioneered the profession in Rivers State when it was founded. He is a founding member of the State Branch of the NUJ. He has served the union in several capacities at different times; Publicity Secretary, State Secretary and State Chairman. In 1977, he was elected unopposed as the National Secretary of the Union at its national convention held in Enugu in that year. It is on record that the Mallam Sidi Ali Sirajo led National Executive of the NUJ at that time was one of the most courageous in the fight for press freedom in Nigeria, in the annals of the union. “Mr Amakiri is the recipient of several awards, includingthe BAGAUDA KHALTO AWARD FOR MEDIA EXCELLENCE awarded to him by the Nigeria Civil Liberties Organisation in 2001.more info http://thebeaconewsnigeria.com/2018/08/are-these-rivers…-state-honours-2/ |
Hon. Femi Ghajabiamila was a former opposition leader of APC in the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2015; today he is the leader of the House of Representatives, still in APC. His antecedent during the period he was in opposition according to his admirers spotlighted him to the general public because he spoke the minds of many Nigerians. This may have been the reason he endeared himself not only to his constituency in Surulere Lagos but to his numerous admirers around the nation. “A bold and outspoken member of the Lower Chamber, who has already carved a niche for himself, as an accomplished politician” one of his loyalists told me. From 2003 to 2018 he still serves in the House, proving beyond any reasonable doubt that he is a gifted and poignant orator. Quite recently, Femi is in messy news, for reasons other than House affairs, but on domestic issues. A Non-governmental body (NGO) from his Surulere constituency had written petitions against him to the Anti-graft Agencies, demanding that he be probed as to how he gave a (vehicle) gift to his wife at his wife’s 50th birthday anniversary recently. The vehicle, an (SUV) allegedly cost Femi £475,000,000 (Seventy-Five Million Naira). The NGO is asking the Anti-graft Agencies to find out how Femi came by such huge sum of money. The agencies should determine whether the money has been properly earned by him, or was it laundered? From constituency projects? Nigerians across the political divide are pissed up over this news because many Nigerians today can no longer afford the three square meals a day. Many have been driven into poverty because of the current recession in the land. And even some mothers who can no longer cope with the devastating economic crisis have resorted to selling their children, showing that there is much hunger, deprivation and anger in the land. Tongues are now wagging and questions are being asked whether this could happen in Nigeria at this time of great need when politicians and public office holders are being looked upon to fix things up in Nigeria, before all of us die of hunger and disease. In the small, gossiping world of Nigerians at this age of social media, political and public life, remain little secret for long. And it appears in Nigeria that public office holders are becoming more and more careless about money and their public behaviour. In Ghana, Mr. Watson’s report of 1948 had said “It would be idle to ignore the existence of bribery and ‘corruption in many walks of life, admitted to us by every responsible African to whom we addressed the question. That corruption may spread as further responsibility devolves upon the African, is a possibility that cannot be denied. No nation can rise to greatness on such foundations (although) its existence cannot be accepted as a barrier to self-rule”. That was Watson speaking after hearing evidence of massive corrupt practices in Ghana in 1948. The British that colonized Ghana discovered to its dismay, massive corruption among their African protégés. What Watson’s report goes to show, is that venality is such a common feature of political life, that it is no longer surprising that Buhari has determined even at the risk of his own life to fight corruption to its logical conclusion. Cynics may say that since all politics by their nature are corrupt that corruption in politics requires no special explanation. Surely politicians in office will either minimize the importance of corruption or deny that it exists at all since the corrupt activities are transacted beneath the surface at times defying their critical frame of reference. In spite of that, however, questions are still asked, who gets what out of the system and how; the means by which private estate are built up on daily basis and maintained by illicit transactions; the manner in which rival baronies of wealth within the system settle their differences, all surely affect the development and durability of a political order in every nation. In many respects, it appears the scale of corruption in Nigeria is probably greater than that which exists in some other African states or indeed than that in many wealthier countries of the world. This is because of the protection being provided by our own defalcations. In Nigeria of course, money speaks more persuasively..More detail http://thebeaconewsnigeria.com/2018/08/that-gift-of-sev…-for-a-dear-wife/ |
