uptown17: You can use Google to make your read faster. For example you can Google "nairaland+give birth in usa+Houston poe" or "nairaland+give birth in usa+colorado+hospital" or whatever you want to search really. In my opinion, you get results faster that way and then you can ask for whatever you truly can't find [s]so you don't incur the wrath of hormonal preggos [/s] (who are otherwise very nice and helpful). Most people on here don't mind helping you but only after you have shown evidence of trying to help yourself cos really most of the questions asked have been answered previously. Secondly, I used Dr. Fagbohun's (Oakbend, Houston) correspondence at my interview and at Dallas POE even though I was going to use a doctor and hospital in Dallas. The doctors I contacted in dallas don't commit to you or give you any sort of documented correspondence until they see you so a girl had to do what a girl had to do. I'd say you have a right to change your mind as long as you pay all your bills and have your zero balance handy for next time. I hope this helps. 4 Likes |

For the Dallas hopefuls in the house, here are a few lessons I have learnt so far that I thought may be beneficial to someone. Disclaimer: This is solely from my experience. It may not apply to everyone as I haven't sampled all the ob/gyns in Dallas so someone may have a totally different experience from mine. I have come to realise that most of the doctors I contacted since I have been here, don't accept patients who are a bit far gone in their pregnancy. I'm not sure what the cut off mark is but they won't accept you if you are 34 weeks and above. They regard your pregnancy as high risk especially if: 1. You don't have a sonogram report done before 20 weeks or I think sometime during your first trimester. 2. They haven't been the ones handling your case from a certain point in time. They don't want to assume risks. 3. Your doctor's report from Nigeria isn't comprehensive enough for them/does not contain certain information they need to ascertain your current status. I was originally meant to go to Houston so I used Dr. Fagb's correspondence to get in cos these Dallas doctors don't give out such documentation for POE. Well the ones I contacted don't. Before I came I had arranged to use a certain doctor/hospital but I was hoping to shop around for cheaper deals before making a commitment. Anyway to cut the long story short here are a few lessons I learnt and thought to share: 1. Before you get here, contact your prospective doctor(s), send them your records, ensure that its ok for you to arrive at a certain time and that they will accept you then. The fact that the airline will let you fly at 34 weeks doesn't mean the doctor will accept you at 34 weeks. 2. Be clear on the information they require. There are certain tests and sonograms they expect to be done at certain stages in your pregnancy and your Nigerian hospital may do things differently. So try talk to your Nigerian doctor about what you need done to find a middle ground. 3. Do most of your research and tick most of your boxes before you get here especially if you will be getting in at 33 weeks and above. 4. Please use Google maps to find out the distance between your prospective accommodation and doctor's office/hospital. Don't just say because X and Y used a certain cheap doctor I will use him too. Forgetting that your most likely "free" accommodation may be 30 miles/an hour drive from the doctor/hospital. Always find out and factor in the cost of transportation too cos you may find that after all things considered, the entire deal won't be that cheap after all. 5. Dallas isn't cheap. But then again, "cheap" is relative. Sorry for the long post! 14 Likes |

Toks07: I called to make the request before my flight date after booking the ticket. Perhaps you can still make a request at MMA. I didn't use the wheelchair at MMA though so I don't attract unnecessary attention. 1 Like |

Nasadiva: Abi o. Make sure you request the wheelchair service. It really helps. Saves you time and energy plus you get to jump the long queues. All the best. |

Terese69: So here's my POE story... Flew Emirates from Lagos to Dubai. They accepted my fit to fly. Didn't have any problems at MMA. Got to Dubai and got on the connecting flight in a matter of minutes thanks to the wheelchair service. On getting on the flight, they asked for fit to fly again. The service on the flight was really good. The air hostesses were really nice and generous with food and drinks but not generous enough to upgrade me to business class... unfortunately. POE at Dallas was very smooth. Took about 6 mins in all. This was how it went... What's the purpose of your trip - Vacation and child birth can I see your doctor's and hospital correspondence - showed her (she started looking through it) How much is the total bill - Told her about $6,000 Have you made any payment? Can I see receipts? - No I haven't made any payment yet. It's against the hospital's policy Will you be paying out of pocket - Yes I will How much do you have with you - Told her When was the last time you were in the USA? - Told her What do you do in nigeria - Told her Is that why you travel so much? (flipping through my passport) - Not exactly Did you bring any food stuff with you? - Yes. What sort of food stuff? - Told her garri, egusi, palm oil, dry pepper, crayfish, pepper soup spices etc. I sha declared all the food stuff I brought. I didn't want wahala. (Apparently they know all these things) Any fresh foods? - No How long do you intend to stay - 3 months 3 months after the birth or 3 months from today? - 3 months from today She stamped me in for 6 months and sent me to baggage claim, afterwhich I was wheeled to customs cos I declared over $10k. Got to customs. They asked me why I was in the US and asked if my child birth was the reason I brought that amount of money. Told them Yes. They gave me a form to fill and sent me on my way. That took about 6 mins too. And that's all folks! 14 Likes |

Even with the "overpriced" compression socks I wore and my numerous walks upandan the plane, my feet still managed to swell. Oh well, I am almost there sha, 30mins to landing in Dallas. Successful POE story coming up soon by God's grace. Wish me luck. PS: I just realised that there is wifi on the flight 10 Likes |

smileymum: Hi Smileymum, I'm sorry to hear about your ordeal. I can only imagine how you feel. But thank God you can reapply. I don't really know much about reapplication but in addition to all @DeeandGLady said, I think for a budget of 2.7m, having a total account balance of 3.5m may not have gone down well with the VO. I mean what if there is an emergency of any sort? And then again she may have thought what are you guys coming back to after having your baby? Perhaps she also thought you micro budgeted. You know there's a differnce between "I can pay for it" and "I can afford it". Perhaps she wasnt convinced that you could honestly afford it without breaking the bank. You mentioned your mum being able to sponsor you. So what you can do is get her to borrow you some money, make her pay it into one of the accounts that you won't be presenting a statement for on your next interview, and then you can transfer the money to yourself so that way it shows that it came from you. I think you should be prepared to show that you have enough even after paying the deduction of your prospective medical bill. Not every VO cares about that, but you have to be prepared just in case. You may also want to take a correspondence from your doctor or hospital that clearly states the estimated cost of services to back up your budget sheet so the VO can see that you aren't making the figures up. Please note that I am not an expert/guru on this matter, these are just my personal opinions. I may be wrong. Good luck. I hope you get a secomd chance and thag hings work out for you then. 1 Like |
