I think you're conflating the words "Track back" and "Drop deep". Messi drops deep to get balls but that doesn't mean he tracks back as tracking back would mean coming back to try to win the ball by pressing, marking, chasing etc. what Messi does is "walk slowly" back and hope his hardworking Barcelona teammates has recovered the ball before he gets to just before the halfway line so they would pass to him and he tries to create

Messi is arguably the worst player in terms of tracking back. doesn't even try to mark when the ball is around him most times except when he feels like.
The problem with this tactic is that while it would work most times against most Laliga oppositions who are inferior to Barcelona, it's destined for failure against teams that defend as a unit and attack as one like Bayern who has quality but all players put in defensive efforts when the team is out of possession. Yes there are coaches that instruct some players not to put in defensive shift but I seriously doubt There's any coach that would instruct a player to be as useless as Messi is when Barcelona don't have the ball.

I know, you really don't like it when Messi gets criticised.
These criticisms might be easily trumped by Messi's other outputs such as his work rate like dropping deep to create chances and the likes.

It doesn't mean these criticisms are not true or should be overlooked. Messi loses the ball, sometimes, a lot in matches. This is undebatable.
You might say it doesn't matter but for others, it's annoying.
