Nigerian history was dominated
by three actors, Nnamdi Azikiwe,
Obafemi Awolowo and Ahmadu
Bello. Dr Azikiwe was an avowed
nationalist who preferred one
Nigeria above anything else. Sir
Obafemi Awolowo is the
undisputed hero of the Yoruba
tribe of Nigeria whose wartime
policy of starvation and currency
change helped kill the Biafran
dream. The post colonial era of
Ahmadu Bello was a tribalist who
initially preferred a balkanized
Nigeria to enable his people live
their religious and cultural life
without external negative
inluence and was later reluctantly
convinced to seek an agenda for
a united Nigeria. Chief Obafemi
Awolowo from the onset did not
hide his preference for an
Oduduwa Republic.
Chief Awolowo is idolized by the
Yorubas because he was able to
transform the South West into an
educational and industrial hub in
Africa and build a robust political
climate. He so much understood
the value of education that he
made it free, affordable and
offered a lot of scholarships to
Yorubas to advance academically
to the highest level. He ran a
political system in Action Group
whereby people have their say
while the leader has his way. This
is the system Bola Tinubu is
unsuccessfully trying to emulate
in Action Congress of Nigeria.
Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, a core
nationalist, never received the
level of hero worship Awolowo
received in the South West
because Igbos severally accuses
him of not taking them out of
Nigeria when Chief Awolowo and
Sir Ahmadu Bello were angling for
a balkanized nation. Chief
Awolowo was the sage whose
idea ended the Nigerian civil war.
He advised the Gowon Cabinet to
block all food supply to Biafra so
as to end the war quickly and
according to him ‘’ starvation is a
legitimate instrument of war’’
This led to the starvation of over
one million Biafran children. Thus
Awolowo’s advice and actions led
to the quick end to the Biafran
dream. Therefore it is right to say
that what the entire armed
forces of Nigeria could not do, the
wisdom of Awolowo did. Chief
Awolowo also ensured that every
adult Biafran who managed to
survive the starvation was given
#20 pounds to start life afresh
irrespective of amount of money
in anyone’s bank account before
the war started. Another policy of
his which frustrated Biafra’s
ability to import food and arms
was the change of currency which
according to Awolowo ‘’ And it is
on record that Ojukwu admitted
that two things defeated him in
this war, that’s as at the day he
left Biafra. He said one, the
change of currency, he said that
was the first thing that defeated
him, and we did that to prevent
Ojukwu taking the money which
his soldiers has stolen from our
Central bank for sale abroad to
buy arms…So I decided to change
the currency, and for your
benefit, it can now be told the
whole world, only Gowon knew
the day before, the day before
the change took place’’.
Chief Awolowo has been variously
accused of introducing tribalism
into the Nigerian politics. He
chased Dr Azikiwe out of the
Ibadan in 1954 when the NCNC
headed by Azikiwe won majority
seats in the West Nigerian House
of Assembly and through a palace
coup called cross carpeting Zik
was denied the Premiership of
Western Nigeria, at a time when
Professor Eyo Ita, an Efik was
premier of Eastern Region and
Alhaji Umoru Altine , a Fulani, was
Mayor of Enugu. Dr Azikiwe,
following the footsteps of
Awolowo, had to frustrate
Professor Eyo Ita out of Enugu.
Chief Awolowo and Sir Ahmadu
Bello seems to have a deeper
understanding of the Nigerian
complexities than Dr Azikiwe.
While Awolowo never trusted the
Igbos, the north never trusted
Awolowo and theYorubas. The
northern oligarchy instigated
crisis in Western Nigeria in the
same manner President Obasanjo
used the Uba brothers to
instigate crisis in Anambra State.
This crisis led to the trumped up
charges leading to the trial and
imprisonment of Awolowo .
Reports has it that he was to be
poisoned in prison before the
military coup altered the state of
affairs.
Awolowo was released from
Calabar prison by Biafran leader
Odumegwu Ojukwu and there
was an agreement that while
Ojukwu declares Biafra in the
East, Awolowo would declare
Oduduwa Republic in the West.
The British establishment,
sensing the dangers of Awolowo
declaring Oduduwa Republic in the
West, convinced Gowon and the
north to checkmate Awolowo’s
secessionist agenda by
appointing him the Vice Chairman
of Federal Executive Council. This
strategy worked effectively and
Awolowo was deceived that after
Gowon’s tenure he would be
given the opportunity of ruling
Nigeria. Awolowo thus had to
checkmate the Biafran dream to
clear any obstacle to his ruling
Nigeria while the north was
looking for the right opportunity
to throw him into the dustbin. In
frustration, Awo resigned from
Gowon’s cabinet when he realized
he has been politically duped.
Awolowo quashed the Biafran
dream while the northern
establishment killed the Oduduwa
dream and betrayed Awolowo’s
presidential ambition thrice. This
fact was aptly captured by a
prominent Yoruba leader and
Nigeria’s former minister of
aviation Chief Femi Fani-Kayode
while replying to a boastful
statement by another prominent
northern leader, Alhaji Usman
Farouk on how the north
dominated the Yoruba people and
conquered the Niger Delta.
According to Fani Kayode, ‘’… the
north literally begged Awolowo
not to declare Oduduwa Republic
and go the way of Biafra even
though that was his original
intention…Fourthly it was the
support that the south west
gave to the north that allowed
Nigeria to win the war. Fifthly it
was the lie that Gowon and the
northern leaders fed to Awolowo
that he would be made President
of the country after the war and
after being effectively being
made de facto Prime Minister
under Gowon during the war that
got Awolowo to support them’’,
invariably, the Igbos and Yorubas
were effectively dribbled, divided,
manipulated and overpowered.
The ascension of Awolowo’s
kinsman Obasanjo as Head of
State was another opportunity
for him to realize his dream of
ruling Nigeria. The 1979 election
result was decided in the
infamous judgement where the
Supreme Court refused Awolowo’s
plea that 2/3 of 19 is 13 states
therefore declaring Alhaji Shehu
Shagari the winner of the
election. The north led by
Generals Shehu Yaradua and
Theophilus Danjuma convinced
Obasanjo on why Awolowo should
never be the president of Nigeria.
Therefore, instead of a runoff
election, which some believe could
favour Awolowo,the Supreme
Court declared Alhaji Shehu
Shagari the winner.
Chief MKO Abiola at one point was
used by the northern dominated
NPN to oppose the presidential
ambitions of Awolowo . He used
his Nigerian Concord newspaper
and enormous wealth to fight
Awolowo and UPN and when they
finished using him to deal with
Awolowo, they frustrated Abiola’s
presidential ambition and he had
to resign from the party in 1982.
Alhaji Umaru Dikko, then
transport minister, sent message
to Abiola that the presidency is
not for sale to the highest bidder.
When Babangida annulled the
election of Abiola in 1993,
Yorubas alluded to a certain curse
Awolowo released on Abiola, in
the heat of the later’s opposition
to his presidency ‘’that even if
Abiola was to be given the
presidential seat, he would not sit
on it.”
In 1999, after the suspicious
death of Abiola, the northern
establishment sensing that Chief
Olu Falae was the choice of the
Yoruba people, rigged the polls in
favour of Obasanjo . It is obvious
that the North had shown
evidence of being deadly political
strategists than their Yoruba and
Igbo compatriots, having used
the political suspicion between
the duos to dribble them.
Conclusively, the north is not as
dumb as people assume; they
used Awolowo to checkmate
Biafra and then dealt with
Awolowo and his ambitions. |
The Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Nigeria (AMEN), Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka, has claimed that the Biafra agitation will only be achieved if the Igbo political elites support the supreme leader of Ipob Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. He made his statement during his adoration night ministry, while narrating how the sovereign state of Biafra could be achieved. According to Rev. father ejike mbaka he narrated his views saying; The ohaneze ndigbo has a hand in the Biafran struggle they do not want to support Biafra’s to go because they still gain in one Nigeria, they allow the innocent souls to die and waste like chickens if Ike ekweremmadu should come out, Nnia nwodo should come out and other executive Igbo political leaders then Biafra will be achieved within six (6) months. https://saharagist.com/if-igbo-politician-support-nnamdi-kanu-biafra-will-be-achieved-within-six-6-months-rev-fr-mbaka/ |

DON'T MIND THE TITLE JUST TRYNA AVOID THE MODS Modified: The True And Sad Story How Afonja Lost Illorin To Fulani People The Yoruba people in Ilorin claimed that the throne should always have a Yoruba king on the seat and backed this with historical references which point Yoruba ancestors as the founders of Ilorin. The Yoruba and Fulani inhabitants of Ilorin, the present capital of Kwara State, Nigeria, have for so long been at loggerheads over who should produce monarch for the town. The Fulani section of Ilorin came up with a counterclaim that no Yoruba king has ever been enthroned from the onset, therefore the throne belongs to their (Fulani) ethnicity. However, history will never lie and so OldNaija brings you the true account of how Aare-Ona- Kakanfo Afonja lost Ilorin to the Fulani people of Northern Nigeria. Who Was Afonja And Who Originally Founded Ilorin? The history of Ilorin put it as a Yoruba town which was originally used as a military outpost by the Alaafin, paramount ruler of the old Oyo empire (Oyo-Ile). At the period of creation, Ilorin was administered by Afonja, the sixth Are-Ona-Kakanfo (generalissimo) of the Oyo army and successor of Are-Ona Oku of Jabata. It was from this outpost that Afonja carried out military functions for the then Alaafin named Aole, the son of Alaafin Abiodun. Aole reigned between 1789 and 1796. It was during this period that Shehu Alimi, a Fulani cleric, arrived Ilorin with some of his tribesmen and were all welcomed and hosted by Afonja. Afonja’s Conflict With Alaafin Aole After a while, conflict broke out between Alaafin Aole and Are-Ona Afonja. Alaafin Aole had ordered Afonja to attack a town named Iwere-Ile which to Afonja was a suicidal mission and he adamantly refused. Iwere-Ile is the hometown of Aole’s paternal grandmother and a former Alaafin named Ajagbo had placed curses on any Kakanfo that attempt to attack Iwere-Ile. These were the reasons Afonja disobeyed Alaafin Aole’s orders. While still at disagreement, Alaafin Aole, also called Arogangan (roughly translated as the mean one), ordered Afonja to attack Apomu, a prominent town in Ile-Ife; this was in 1795. The disagreement heated up to the point that both sides resulted to trash things out with violence. At this point, Afonja sought the support of Shehu Alimi also known as Salih Janta who had both spiritual and military power. On his way from the Apomu expedition, Afonja stopped at Oyo-Ile to deal with Alaafin Aole. Afonja sent an empty calabash to Aole signifying his rejection as the Alaafin and according to the customs of Oyo, he was to commit suicide at such and he did. OldNaija gathered that before Aole took his life, he performed a ritual and cursed the entire Yoruba land that their sons and daughters will be taken as slaves and sold to different parts of the world. Many believe Aole’s curse plunged Yoruba land into a series of inter- tribal wars that broke out in following years such as the Kiriji war, Egba-Dahomey war, Ibadan- Ijaye war and so on. Aole was succeeded by Adebo who ruled from 1796 to 1797; Maku succeeded Adebo and also ruled for few months before his death in 1797. From 1797 to 1802, the Oyo throne was vacant. It was in 1802 that Alaafin Majotu was crowned and it was during his reign that Are-Ona-Kakanfo lost Ilorin to the Fulani. The Death Of Afonja And The Establishment Of Emir Throne In Ilorin After defeating Aole, Afonja and Alimi’s relationship strengthened to the extent that Afonja enlisted Alimi’s men into his army and disbanded many of his men whom history claimed he didn’t fully trust. Unknowing to Afonja, the Fulanis were gradually infiltrating his army and before he could realize, it was too late. This was after Sheu Alimi’s death. His son, Abdulsalam, earnestly yearned to rule Ilorin and clandestinely plotted against Afonja. In 1824, Abdulsalam’s men shot Afonja arrows till he breathed his last. He was shot so many arrows that his dead body remained suspended in an upright position for a long while. “ "HE FELL INDEED LIKE A HERO. SO COVERED WAS HE WITH DARTS THAT HIS BODY WAS SUPPORTED IN AN ERECT POSITION UPON THE SHAFTS OF SPEAR AND ARROWS SHOWERED UPON HIM. SO MUCH DREAD HAD HIS PERSONALITY INSPIRED THAT THESE TREACHEROUS JAMAS WHOM HE HAD SO OFTEN LED TO VICTORY COULD NOT BELIEVE HE WAS REALLY DEAD; THEY CONTINUED TO SHOWER DARTS UPON HIM LONG AFTER HE HAD CEASED FIGHTING. THEY WERE AFRAID TO APPROACH HIS BODY AS IF HE WOULD SUDDENLY SPRING UP AND SHAKE HIMSELF FOR THE CONFLICT AFRESH." After Afonja’s death, Abdulsalam declared himself the Emir of Ilorin and pledge allegiance to Sokoto Caliphate. This was how the monarch of Ilorin hold the title of Emir till today instead of Oba or any other Yoruba title for a king. Afterward, the Yorubas attempted to regain control of Ilorin from the Fulani jammas but failed. Toyeje, the successor of Afonja, led the first and second attempts to drive the Fulani people out of Ilorin. The second attempt is known in history as Mugbamugba war in which Yoruba people suffered untold defeat in the strive to regain the throne of Ilorin. |

China has often been accused of
luring the poor African countries
in its debt-trap by providing them
loans for much-needed
infrastructure projects and then
control them when they fail to
pay off their debts.
Tanzania President John Magufuli
has cancelled a Chinese loan
worth $10 billion signed by his
predecessor Jakaya Kikwete to
construct a port at Mbegani creek
in Bagamoyo over terms and
conditions that, he said, beat the
logic. Magufuli said that the terms
of the Chinese loan agreement
could only be accepted by a
drunken man.
His predecessor, Jakaya Kikwete
had signed the deal with Chinese
investors to build the port on
condition that they will get 30
years to guarantee on the loan
and 99 years uninterrupted lease,
according to local media reports.
Another shocking demand made
by the Chinese and accepted by
Kikwete administration was that
the Tanzanian government will
have absolutely no power to
raise concerns on whoever
invests in the port during that
period.
Dubbed as the "killer Chinese
loan", several organisations and
African citizens had demanded
the then President to cancle the
agreement. They had warned
that the move will have dire
consequences but their concerns
were overlooked and the deal
was signed.
However, after coming to power,
President Magufuli initiated the
renegotiation process and
pressed the investors to bring
down the lease period to 33
years instead of 99 years signed
by the previous government.
Magufuli administration also made
it clear that there will be no tax
or utility exemption for the
Chinese investors and they will
need government approval to
start new operations at the port.
However, the investors didn't
meet the deadline issued by the
Magufuli government, hence, the
agreement got cancelled.

Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh confirmed the constant presence of Chinese vessels in the Indian Ocean, part of Beijing's ambitions to build and protect global trade routes. Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue, the admiral warned: “If anyone operates in our region, they have to notify us first.” The Indian Navy released a statement that said: “The Dornier squadron of the ENC, INAS 311, operating from Indian the air station, has been undertaking regular maritime surveillance missions. The statement from the military commander comes against the backdrop of movements of a Chinese aircraft carrier and warships through the Miyako Strait in the fraught South China Sea. According to a Japanese military report, released late last year, China has the third-largest ground force in the world following India and North Korea, with approximately 9,80,000 personnel. The report read: “Since 1985, China has continuously sought to modernise its military by curtailing the number of personnel and streamlining organisations and systems through reforms, including those currently being implemented, in order to improve operational capabilities. "Additionally, all other air assets have been kept mission-ready and prepared for immediate deployment should the need arise." China's Peoples’ Liberation Army, PLA, was always regarded as the largest army in the world with an approximate strength of two million soldiers. But recently India has overtaken the Chinese in the size of its land forces. "China has rapidly modernised its missile forces in recent years." India is now in the early stages of building a leaner and modern technology-enabled force as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015.The unprecedented reform began in November that year during which the focus shifted to technology for cyber and space and futuristic weapons besides giving a greater emphasis on building up the PLA’s Navy and the Air Force. China is deploying naval vessels along their projected maritime trade routes. Chinese president Xi Jinping had in 2015 announced the downsizing of the PLA to make the force leaner and reliant on modern warfare. This is part of Xi Jinping's Belt and Road Initiative, which is the largest investment in global infrastructure of all time. The Belt and Road initiative and accompanying Chinese military buildup have been heralded as a fundamental change in the global order. The balance of regional economic and military power is undergoing a dramatic change as China vies for global trade domination. It is easily outpacing the United States’ Marshall Plan following World War II. https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1268940/india-china-war-conflict-navy-indian-ocean?fbclid=IwAR2mU1LDefkRBK403xqGvY5MiG-vNUojUayoZLV8pcUlIfAIMrvhldk0-Go |
