WENGER: NASRI OUT FOR SIX WEEKS
Posted 22/07/09 14:02
EmailPrintSave

Arsene Wenger has delivered a remarkably optimistic diagnosis for Samir Nasri, predicting that the Frenchman could recover from his broken leg in just six weeks.

The midfielder was injured on the first day of Arsenal's pre-season training camp and, if Wenger is correct, he could miss just a few of weeks of the coming campaign.

"He accidentally nicked the ball away from somebody having a shot on goal. Unfortunately he got kicked and broke his fibula and he will be out for six weeks. It's not a complicated one, it's a simple one but it will take six weeks to heal," Wenger told Arsenal's official website.

"But the options are Tomas Rosicky who is back. And in [those] two months Eduardo will be back as well. We do have offensive options but we don't want to lose important players before the season starts."

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Wenger May Not Replace Adebayor by thayur(m): 7:32pm On Jul 18, 2009
Arsene Wenger has no plans to replace Emmanuel Adebayor after agreeing to sell the Arsenal striker to Manchester City. Adebayor spent the day at Eastlands discussing personal terms and the transfer, reported to be worth £25m, is in on the brink of completion.

Wenger today claimed the money raised by Adebayor's sale is his to invest, but while he is keeping an eye on Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh, he is in no hurry to spend. Instead, he will rely on his current attacking options which have been boosted by the return of Tomas Rosicky and Eduardo from injury.

"We're not on the verge of signing anybody, but I'm able to spend the money if we find the right players," he said. "We're not in a hurry because we have a big squad. We'll see in pre-season if we need to make any additions.

"If we need to add something we will. Chamakh is one of the players we've followed and if we need to go for a striker he's a possibility," said Wenger. "We're keeping an eye on him.

"We have Rosicky and Eduardo back, so we've lost a big striker but have gained two offensive players who were absent last season. We also have Nicklas Bendtner, Andrey Arshavin, Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott who can play striker," he said. "We have top players we can use as strikers."
We're not in a hurry because we have a big squad. We'll see in pre-season if we need to make any additions.
Arsene Wenger

Adebayor's departure will not be mourned by Arsenal fans who tired of his attempt to engineer a move abroad last summer before signing a new contract. Supporters questioned his commitment throughout last season and his sale represents good business, with Arsenal set to make an £18m profit on a player they signed from Monaco for £7m in 2006. Wenger understands Adebayor's desire to leave the Emirates and acknowledged that he was joining a growing force in the Barclays Premier League.

"We'll miss him, he's a great player. I'm sure he'll give something special to Man City," he said. "I don't believe that last season he got enough support and I think that played a part in his mind.

"There was a bit of resentment you could feel through last summer. I believe he wanted to do well, but didn't have the confidence of the year before. If you consider the money we paid for him it was good business, but that was not our main target," said Wenger.

"It's a good opportunity for him because City could be a big force in the coming years. Carlos Tevez, Robinho and Gareth Barry have done it. Man City will be a threat to the top teams."

With Togo international Emmanuel Adebayor undergoing a medical at Eastlands ahead of a £25m switch from Arsenal, Arsene Wenger has finally spoken about the move.

Wenger bought Adebayor in 2006 from Monaco in a £7m deal, the 25-year old has since made 104 appearances for the Gunners scoring 46 goals, as well as being named African footballer of the year for 2008.

When asked if a deal was going through with Manchester City for the powerful 6'3 striker Wenger told SSN: 'Yes, he is up at Manchester City having a medical and we will see what comes out of it.

'If the medical is positive and he agrees personal terms then it could happen.

'We'll miss him, but of course we want to focus on the players that are with us at the moment.

'We want to wish him well and thank him for everything he has done for the club.

'I wish him well, I am sure he will give something special to Man City.'

How can mags get away with proclaiming Angie and Brad preggers and in love one week, breaking up the next, ready to adopt the week after? Are they really that volatile? Do mags just make s--t up?
—Carly, via Facebook

We're talking about a pair of bazillionaire mega-movie stars. Why wouldn't Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt be at least partially as volatile as the headlines claim? Sure, mags are responsible for their own drama-queen headlines. But in general, when it comes to this couple, I am told that the crazy Brangie reports are at least believed to be true by the people who gather and write them.

Still, let's dig a little deeper and take a look at a few of the rumors you mention, starting with the constant whisperings of pregnancy,

Of course many mags have just gotten this story wrong at one point or another; Angie has birthed one single baby and one set of twins, despite rumors of her being pregnant every second of every day. In fact, according to Star, Angelina is carrying a fourth messiah child right this very millisecond. This could be true or not—I really can't say I care.

But remember, reporters rely on sources, some of whom are more connected than others. When there's a very clear-cut story about a pregnancy, there's usually a source, or someone, who heard something that led someone to believe that Angie was preggers.

"There are a lot of reasons why someone could report a pregnancy," says CoverAwards founder and former Life & Style editor Mark Pasetsky. "They could have someone tell them they are pregnant, or just trying to get pregnant."

Many magazines say one thing on their covers and report something quite different on the inside.

A headline may scream something like the oh-so-fresh phrase "baby joy," but inside, the copy is all about some couple just talking about a baby. Remember that candy-colored headline from OK! magazine proclaiming Shiloh and Suri to be "best friends"? That was based on a report of some vague conversation between the parents about maybe arranging a play date.

Read the whole story—if you can stand it—and not just the cover.

But the most important point to remember here is that some celebrity couples really are that dramatic. Would you really be all that shocked if Brangelina were one of them?

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Injuries, Charges And A Chance To End The Boro Hoodoo by thayur(m): 9:52pm On Apr 25, 2009
Lots to get through today, so let’s get straight on with it. First off, we have team news for tomorrow’s early afternoon match with Boro, and it’s positive - any of Almunia, Adebayor or Djourou could make their returns. With Van Persie out, and Eduardo short of match fitness, the return of the big man up front is important, but perhaps not as crucial as the two at the back.

Fabianski has been in the firing line of late, and is clearly still hurting after his Wembley experience, so it’ll be good to take him out of the limelight and get the calmer Almunia back. The Pole has shown enough to suggest he could be a top class stopper in time, but for now a few games in the reserves won’t hurt. As for Djourou, he hasn’t played all that much this season, but with Silvestre looking wobbly his return is possibly the most important of the trio.

Whether all three play tomorrow is doubtful, Ade especially will probably be wrapped in cotton wool for the Champions League tie on Wednesday night, but we’re so short of numbers in defence that the other two may be forced in.

Speaking of the Boro game, we do have an exceptionally bad record against Gareth Southgate, not winning in five matches against his side, and with their relegation scrap going to the wire, we can’t expect an easy game. Add to the mix the fact that Aliadiere has now almost scored as many goals against us as in eight years at the club, and it becomes a banana skin. That said, they are probably the weakest offensive side in the Premiership, so perhaps it is the perfect time for our threadbare defence to face them.

Elsewhere, as I’m sure you’ve seen, Cesc has been charged by the FA on two counts - one regarding his coming on to the pitch at the end of the Hull game, and one in relation to Phil Brown’s spitting allegations. Brown has himself been charged after comments he made about Mike Riley.

Frankly, I think this has gotten way out of hand. Firstly, let’s address the spitting ‘incident’ - first Brown said that his assistant had ‘told him’ Cesc had spat, and that it had happened at pitchside. An hour later, the story was completely different - not only had Brown now witnessed the event first hand, it had moved to the tunnel where, conveniently, there were no cameras.

Cameras, after all, have not been Brown’s friend, after his accusation that Wenger failed to shake his hand after their two league encounters this season - in both cases pictures and video were released proving this to be a baseless accusation. Brown has seemingly forgotten that he is in the Premiership now - everything is recorded, and such senseless lies are easily exposed.

So how has his word led to an FA charge when there is no evidence to back him up? It seems simply to cater to the media masses, those that cannot accept that no action will be taken. Wenger is confident, however, that nothing will come of it:

“I show you the tape, you watch the tape, you will be surprised he is charged. He will not be banned. Such a big thing has been made of that story that they go further. I know how it works at the FA. I know them for long enough.”

In essence, the FA feel compelled to press on, despite the complete lack of a case against our captain. The good news is that there is actually a video of the tunnel, as Peter Hill-Wood says:

“We have a video of the tunnel which we gave to the FA. I didn’t see it myself but Arsene has and so has Ivan Gazidis, and they both said that the whole thing was innocuous. I think that the whole thing is ridiculous.”

Fairly strong words from our chairman. If the FA try to ban Cesc, they will come under fire, but more worrying is his second charge, for coming on to the pitch in the first place. This smacks of them wanting to ban him for something, but in the knowledge that the spitting charge has no legs. But how can you ban an injured club captain for coming on to the pitch after a game? It isn’t against the rules (and neither were the clothes he was wearing, incidentally), and if they act, expect Wenger to point out how it happens week in, week out, at other clubs.

I can see why the FA feel the need to press on with the spitting claim, as so much has been made of it, but that should eventually be thrown out. The second charge, however, is a very very bad joke.

As for Phil Brown, he should concentrate more on the conduct of his own team, who today had Folan sent off for lashing out at Martin Skrtel. There is an old saying about sorting your own house out that applies quite neatly here.

At least if we lose to Boro tomorrow, Hull will be in the drop zone after the match. Is it tempting?
