30. COUNTLESS.

I can't call my mum, she might faint instantly if I tell her about my situation. My mum has been struggling to make both ends meet for a long time now. My younger brothers are still in school. She still have them to cater for.

Am an NCE holder. I plan to further my education to the highest level but life dealt us its most fatal blow by using death to took away my dad. I had to move away from home to find means to become sucessful in life.

I travelled away from Oyo state to Ogun state, and that was when I re-met Jide and he took me in. One of his friends introduced me to the G-business, where I earned enough to become independent on my own. I always made sure I assure my mum whenever I call or she called me that am doing fine. How can I now call and tell her that am doing the opposite of fine?

Jide is out of option. He might be strict with money but am sure he will help if he had the money. I don't think he can afford such help at that time.

I called Adedoyin and informed her that I needed her help. I told her where I was and she told me to expect her in the next thirty minutes.

I was taken back to the detention cell until the arrival of Adedoyin. Thirty minutes later she arrived and was allowed to come and see me in the cell.

After seeing the sorry state that I was, She felt nothing but pity for me. My knee still hurts which made it difficult for me to stand upright. I was only able to lean on the cell bars to speak with her.

She left to see the D.P.O and after few minutes later, I was released into her custody as she claimed herself to be my dads younger sister.

Adedoyin didn't utter a single word to me throughout the drive out of the station. It was evident in her eyes that she was very sad. She drove me straight to the Sacred heart hospital where I was given some pain relieving injections and drugs.

*****

It was getting dark by the time we left the hospital premises and headed towards the car park where she had previously parked the SL Benz.

"thank you very much for your kindness Adedoyin. I really appreciate it. It means a lot to me". I told her the moment we got inside the car.

"please, don't mention it dear, its nothing to me.....but one thing still baffles me, how can you beat an innocent boy to a pulp at the middle of the night? Are you a cultist or a gang something?" she asked with a questioning look.

"Is that what the D.P.O told you?"

"of course, he said you would have killed the boy if the police had not arrived on time...is that how you are? Aggressive or what?"

"well, am not suprised he said that, the thing is, that man is a liar and a fraud. He's not fit to be a security officer talkless of being a police man". I lamented.

I narrated everything that happened to her, making sure I leave out the Chioma part

She was very upset and wanted to head for the police headquaters at Eleweran to go and report the D.P.O, but I convinced her to let it go.

"am just very grateful you came to my rescue dear. I will forever remain indebted to you Adedoyin." I moved closer to her and gave her a peck.

"as if you wont do more than that for me if I were in your shoes...stop kidding and fasten your seat belt. Am taking you to my place until this issue had died down". She said as she ignite the engine.

"What? Your place? No...o..o...Please am not ready to face your children please or relative..not now.....just.." I said pleadingly.

"ssshhhhh..who says you are meeting anybody.? My children are in the boarding, its only my cousin that is with me, so please chill." She said as she set the car on the road and drove off.

"can we stop at my house, I need to get somethings..i dont know for how long I will be staying at your house." I said after some distance away from the hospital.

"ok..ok..and please make it fast..its getting dark and you never can tell, those guys might come back for revenge".

"ok dear. I wont."

****

"you can pull over there, thats my house". I said pointing to a parking lane at the side of the road just infront of my house.

She parked and we both alighted and entered my room. I picked some clothes, and my laptop and some things I will be needing withing the short period I will be spending at her house.

The Judases are not around and Jide was not yet back.

We left the house around 8:25 and she drove off to Leme area.

*****

We arrived at a big duplex and the gateman opened the gate. She drove inside the large compound and unlocked the car doors as we alighted.

"welcome to my home Darous" she said smiling at me as we entered the main sitting room. I really admired the beauty of the house

She headed upstairs and I sat down on a cushion. She came down few seconds later with a lady.

"Darous, meet my cousin, Lovelyn, Lovelyn meet Darous my...my..hmmm..my Boy". She introduce with a smarmy smile.

What did she just say? Is this the same Lovelyn I forked after leaving the viewing centre in a pandemoniumnistic hurry? Please, am I dreaming?

29. COUNTLESS.

While still waiting for the outcome of the sent picture, me and the other guys started communicating through mouthing signals. We told ourselves not to betray our initial stand of not confessing.

The sergeant walked in and handed over a phone to the D.P.O.
He collected it and stared at its screen for a while then he looked up.

"The boy you beat to coma is a student of Funaab. He was coming from where he went to charge his laptop at the time of the incident. He said he started running when he saw five or six guys running after him thinking they were kidnappers that wants to kidnap him to get money from his parents. He explained to us how one of you decided not to stop beating him even when the others were urging him to stop."
He moved to the father of the boy and whispered some words to him. Then he looked up again.

"hey you." He beckoned to me and continued. "do you remember what I said before this picture was sent?" He asked.

"I erm...you..said...only gawd can..save who ever he identifies." I stammered in trembling voice.

"good thing that you remember. Now see who he picked....look here." He pointed the android screen at me and my face was clearly shown on it with a sign boldly on my forehead. I started trembling nervously.

Its true that we beat him. But how can he identify only me out of six people. Is it because I was the one that caught him? I remember running faster than the rest, but still I'm not sure he even saw my face when I gave him that slidding tackle that sent him sprawling on the floor before the other guys arrived and started beating him.

I remember the initial plan that we made through signal of not confessing to beating him under no matter what.

"whose face is it boy? Answer me!" His command tone brought me out of my unconcluded thoughts.

"Its my face sir, but..I didn't..."

He cuts in.
"you didn't what? Are you crazy? Even with this? Sergeant!".. He roared and a heavy slap landed on my neck and its effect rendered me groaning on the floor. It was so excruciatingly painful that I started to wail and plead as the sergeant kicked my knees and legs with his heavy boot.

The D.P.O ordered him to stop and drag me up. He approached me and asked again.

"who beat him!?" He voiced angrily.

"ple...ase...I didn't.. You can ask my friends...they can bear me wit...ness sir.." I stuttered. Hoping my friends will come to my aid because of our plan.

He turned to Habeeb and the latter was already shaking.
"he said you are ready to bear his witness, that you can stake your life on it that he didn't beat the boy." He asked Habeeb with a high level of intimidation.

I eyed Habeeb and gave him a 'PLEASE I BEG' look.

"I...I..didn't know anything about it sir...he was the only one I saw with the robb...the boy when I came out of my room."

'Am I dreaming? How can Habeeb say...'

"and what was he doing with the boy when you saw him." The D.P.O asked again.

"He..was beating him, but me and my friends told him to stop, he didn't listen, that was when I told Jyboh to call the police before he kills the boy." Habeeb replied conivingly or betrayingly, or whatever adjective you can find to qualify that statement.

I looked at Habeeb and I saw this 'I NO FIT GO PRISON' look on his betrayal face.

The D.P.O smiled and asked the other guys to confirm what Habeeb have said and they attested to it.

Even as big as the Bible is, it contained just only one Judas from Genesis to Revelation but here I am in this D.P.O's office with Five black Judas hanging on my neck and the D.P.O serving as king Herod.

'Shango where is your nuclear thunder?'

No amount of words can be used to describe how I was feeling at that moment.

He ordered the sergeant to release Habeeb and co's.

The D.P.O was beaming with a look of accomplishment.

The D.P.O led the boys parent outside and came back some minutes later.

He sat on the chair and told the returning sergeant to bring me closer to him.

"I know how you feel boy, but that is life, we do things at times, thinking it is the best thing to do, but only other people can show us the errors of our ways." He stopped obviously wanting to know my reaction but I gave him a 'SPARE ME THE HYPROCRITIC LECTURE' look and he continued. "now, I will give you two options to help you out. Since police is your friend. Are you listening?" He asked with a deep baritone voice. I nodded and he proceeded. "you can call anybody that will come and pay your fine and bail of three hundred thousand naira or spend the next 3 years of your life inside that detention cell you just visited. Choice is yours boy." He said conclusively.

Which kind country is this? I should pay 3 hundred K for what? For catching a thief and handing him to the police? This is one of the reasons why we need to vote Shango as our president in the next election.

I agreed to the option of fine and my phone was given to me to call whoever I want to call. But that situation begs for this question: Who do I call?

28 COUNTLESS

The distance between our house and the station is approximately the same distance that separates the first and last letters of 'V'AGIN'A' and that makes it a trekkable distance.

We were on the 'G' letter to the police station when my phone rang. I reached for it in my pockets and saw it was Adedoyin. I proceeded with the guys as I picked it.

After the pleasantries, She told me she will be travelling out of the country for a 3weeks seminar in 2days time. She requested that we meet before she depart.

"Darous I can't wait to see you and the other you tomorrow." She said with emphasis on the latter of the 'you's and ended the call.

I tucked the phone into my pocket and continue with the guys.

We were on the 'N' of the VAGIN'A letters when we saw the same police response squad that came at midnight to took one of the robbers away zoomed past us.

"Guys, you see that police car? Na our house direction dem dey go o." Kira said, pointing towards the route the Police car went.

"they fit get another emergency na, you no know our area?" Said Jyboh, a Funaabite and the tallest guy among us.

"abeg lets go na! me get lecture by one o." said Spartacus, another Funaabite.

"oya guys lets..." I was interrupted by the ringing of my phone. I took it out and it was Joke calling. Then I remember my promise to see her today.

"Hello. Good morning."

"Morning Darous, hows your night?" She asked.

"My night? I don't know." I replied jovially.

"what! How?"

"I don't know, cos I was sleeping." I said jokingly.

"you are not..se..rious." she said amid chuckles. "I just want to confirm if you are still coming. Its 9:30 already."

"that...errm..you know what? I can't make it by..."

She cuts in.
"why? Am really expecting you." She sounded disappointed.

"don't worry, I will still come but probably around 1 or 1:30..I will surely come." I replied with optimism.

"ok. I will be waiting for you. Please do come." she said and ended the call.

I returned the phone, and quickly meet up with the guys as we approach 'A' the last letter of the distance to the station.

****

"how can I help you guys?" The sergeant at the counter questioned us as we walk in.

"we are the ones that called the P.R.S at midnight to report a robbery incidence at our house. We were asked to come here for our statements this morning by the squad that came to apprehend one of the robbers that we singlehandedly caught." Habeeb clarified.

After earing that, the sergeant suddenly beckoned to three of his colleagues manning the entrance to come and arrest us.

"guys, you are all under arrest. You have the right to keep quiet or we go beat bastard commot for your body if you try to talk nonsense." Another sergeant retorted as he pushed us forward towards the cell entrance. Alcohol was strongly puffing out of his nostrils and mouth as he delieverd his unlawful speech.

We were led into a cell and our phones and belts were siezed. Looks of confusion was plastered on our respective faces, with thoughts of 'whats going on' running through our minds.

We sat down facing each other and started deliberating on what might have happened.

Thirty minutes later, the cell was opened and we were led towards the D.P.O's office. We entered and were met with angry stares from two elderly couples and the D.P.O sitting comfortably on a chair behind the desk opposing them.

Suddenly the woman rose up and aimed her index finger at us.

"which of you bastards wants to kill my only son? Eh? Which of you? I swear to Gawd...if anything should happen to my child....Gawd help me, I will turn your lives into a diluted miserable ones." She spat at us with anger and contempt written in her voice. Her husband dragged her gently to her seat.

We were unable to utter a single word. We were just looking at her in awe of whats going on?.

"madam calm down. Lets handle things with care please. Thank Gawd they were found and arrested, I assure you nothing will happen to your child. But Just give us the chance to do our jobs. Please." The D.P.O said facing the woman. He then turned to us.
"Now, which of you guys inflicted the injuries we found on the body of the boy you handed over to my boys?" He asked us with a voice of authority and confidence.

Seeing the confused looks on our face, he spoke on. "let me warn you for your parents sake, I suggest you speak the truth....Now answer me!" He declared with a stern face.

We all denied the accusation, for more than twenty minutes.

"You are proving to be stubborn right? Ok. The boy said he can identify the person that beat him among you." He turned to the sergeant that led us in. "sergeant, take their pictures and send it to the hospital. Let the innocent boy identify the culprit among them." Then he turned to us. "I pray gawd help whoever and I repeat, who ever he identifies among you. That person will regret the day he was born." He said conclusively with a threatning voice.

Then thirty minutes later. The sergeant walked back in.
