Technology Market / Facebook Rolls Out Tools To Block Unwanted Friend Requests by TheBlog: 8:00am On Dec 22, 2017
To prevent harassment on Facebook, the social media giant has introduced new tools that keep unwanted friend requests and messages from reaching you. The new features proactively recognise and help prevent unwanted contact when someone you blocked sets up a new account or tries to contact you from another account they control, said Antigone Davis, Global Head of Safety at Facebook said in a statement on Tuesday.

The new tools also provide the users the option to ignore a Messenger conversation and automatically move it out of their inbox, without having to block the sender. “Now, you can tap on a message to ignore the conversation. This disables notifications and moves the conversation from your inbox to your Filtered Messages folder,” Davis said. It enables the user to read messages in the conversation without the sender seeing if they have been read.

“This feature is now available for one on one conversations and will soon be available broadly for group messages, too,” Davis added. Facebook hopes that the new tools will be of immense use for women and journalists who disproportionately experience harassment on the social media platform. As those who resort to harassment on social media often rely on fake accounts, Facebook said it is building on existing features that prevent fake and inauthentic accounts.

Technology Market / Twitter Now Allows Two-factor Authentication Via Third-party Apps by TheBlog: 7:44am On Dec 22, 2017
Twitter now allows for two-step authentication via third-apps like Google Authenticator, Duo Mobile, Authy, and more. For users who have enabled two-factor authentication for Twitter, the service previously enable login only via six-digit code sent to user’s mobile number via SMS.

Setting up two-factor authentication essentially means users will have to enter a code generated via associated third-party app or sent via SMS, in addition to password, to log in to Twitter. The method is more secure as third-party apps like Google Authenticator keep refreshing codes after every 30 seconds or so. Of course, third-party authentication apps still require a phone number that is associated with Twitter account for account recovery.

“We’re rolling out an update to login verification. You’ll now be able to use a third party app for two-factor authentication instead of SMS text messages,” Twitter Safety said in a tweet. Once set-up, two-factor authentication is needed while logging into twitter.com, Twitter for iOS, Twitter for Android, or mobile.twitter.com.

Sports / Neymar Believes PSG Can Eliminate Real Madrid by TheBlog: 10:49pm On Dec 21, 2017
Neymar believes Paris Saint-Germain can “make history” by eliminating holders and record 12-time winners Real Madrid when the two clubs meet in the last 16 of the Champions League.

French league leaders PSG were paired with Cristiano Ronaldo‘s Real in the tie of the round, and big-spending PSG are looking for a rapid return on their massive summer investment.

“We know it will be a difficult match against a team that has been playing together for years and also wants to win, but we can beat them,” Neymar said on Thursday as PSG arrived in Doha for their winter training camp.

“We can make history. We’re here to do just that, to play football, and we’re going to do everything to win,” added the Brazilian, who cost PSG a world record €222 million in August when he joined from Barcelona.

PSG have never advanced beyond the quarterfinals of the Champions League since the club’s takeover by its Qatari owners in 2011, throwing away a 4-0 first leg lead to spectacularly crash out in the last 16 to Barcelona last season after four straight quarterfinal exits.

They will travel to Madrid for the first leg on February, with the return meeting at the Parc des Princes on March 6.

Phones / Study Reveals Smartphones Keep Students Distracted During Lectures by TheBlog: 8:09pm On Oct 26, 2017
Allowing smartphones in class may affect the students’ ability to concentrate, eventually hampering their academic performance, warns a new research.

Instead of using their phones to follow the lectures, students use them to communicate with friends, watch YouTube videos or just browse around the web to follow their interests, said the study published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior.

“While ever-smarter digital devices have made many aspects of our lives easier and more efficient, a growing body of evidence suggests that, by continuously distracting us, they are harming our ability to concentrate,” said Daniel le Roux from Stellenbosch University in South Africa.

The researchers pointed out that university lecturers are encouraged to develop blended learning initiatives and bring tech — videos, podcasts, Facebook pages, etc. — into the classroom more and more to offer students the enhanced experiences enabled by digital media.

However, an important effect of these initiatives has been to establish media use during university lectures as the norm, they warned.

Studies across the world show that students constantly use their phones when they are in class.

Education / How To Choose What You Read by TheBlog: 10:25am On Oct 24, 2017
In this article, we will be take you through how you can improve your English reading skills and the overall understanding of English through reading.

Here are some pointers to keep in mind:

1. Make your own choice: Reading is an essential and the common activity towards improving English. To make things productive, make your own choice regarding the kind of medium you will use for your reading activity. Some common ones are

Newspapers
Magazines
Books
Digital text like blogs, e-books, e-zines etc.
Select the medium which you are most comfortable and if you have no previous experience with any, start with reading newspapers on a daily basis.

2. Try not to limit yourself to a single medium: Select one of the mediums and focus on it to improve your reading skills. But don’t let this one medium be the source of your reading forever. When things start getting boring or easy, try to read other things. Even if you start with books, introduce yourself to difficult books once you become a regular reader.

3. Read about things that interest you: If you find reading boring and it is difficult to even start this, try matching your interests to the topics you read. A football fan? Try to follow a blog with football updates like goal.com and espn.com. Similarly, match anything that you find very interesting with your reading habits. Start with them and allow your reading habits to grow eventually.

Education / Chibok Diaries: Chronicling A Boko Haram Kidnapping by TheBlog: 10:05am On Oct 24, 2017
One of the Chibok girls freed in May has been telling journalist Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani how a diary was kept of some of her three years in captivity with Boko Haram Islamist militants.

One of the oldest in her class, Naomi Adamu was 24 when she and more than 200 mainly Christian students were taken off into Boko Haram’s Sambisa forest hideout in north-eastern Nigeria in 2014, sparking global outrage.

While in captivity, the girls were given exercise books for the Koranic classes they were made to attend.

But some of the girls used these to keep secret diaries. When the militants found out, they were forced to burn the books.

Ms Adamu managed to hide hers. She and her close friend, Sarah Samuel, now 20, and three other girls used the books to chronicle some of their experiences.

The diary entries, written in passable English and poor Hausa, are undated and appear to be from their early months in captivity.

Here are 10 of the many disclosures. Some spelling and punctuation have been altered for clarity:

1) Kidnap was not the plan

The militants who attacked the Chibok school on 14 April 2014 had come with the intention of stealing an “engine block”, the diary notes. It is not clear what piece of machinery they wanted – there had been some construction work at the school a few weeks earlier, so it may have been the machine used for moulding cement blocks, which can also be used for constructing crude weapons, or they may have been after an engine block from a vehicle.

But when it could not be found, they argued over what to do with the students they had gathered in groups. After considering a number of gory options, they decided to take the girls with them.

“They started argument in their midst. So one small boy said that they should burn us all and they said, ‘No let us take them with us to Sambisa.’ Another person said, ‘No let’s not do that. Let’s lead them… to their parent homes.’ As they were in argument, then one of them said, ‘No, I can’t come with empty car and go back with empty car… If we take them to [Abubakar] Shekau [Boko Haram’s leader], he will know what to do.'”

2) A telltale prevented escape

Some girls were loaded into the militants’ vehicle at the school while the majority were made to walk at gunpoint for miles, until several trucks arrived to ferry them away.

Health / Side Effects Of Viagra by TheBlog: 9:22am On Oct 24, 2017
Viagra (brand name for sildenafil) is a fairly well-known drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil is used to treat male sexual function problems (impotence or erectile dysfunction-ED). In combination with sexual stimulation, sildenafil works by increasing blood flow to the penis to help a man get and keep an erection.

Viagra (sildenafil) relaxes muscles found in the walls of blood vessels and increases blood flow to particular areas of the body.

It was first approved for this use by the FDA in 1998. As with any drug, side effects may occur, and certain situations may increase the severity or frequency of these side effects.

Side effects are broken down into two main categories; common and serious.

Common side effects of Viagra:

Health / 14 Foods That Will Help You Burn Fat by TheBlog: 7:48pm On Oct 12, 2017
Do not only be beautiful but be healthy as well. Include these healthy foods in your diet plan and lose stubborn belly fat faster. They work like magic!

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has many advantages for your health and can help you lose weight faster. It contains a pectin which makes your brain feel more satisfied. So if you’re feeling hungry before bedtime, apple cider vinegar is your solution. It also promotes natural detox, cleansing, and healing.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Olive oil is a healthy dietary fat that helps eliminate “bad” (saturated) fats while lowering cortisol (stress hormone) levels that influence weight gain.

It loses most of its health benefits when heated, so better go with a spoonful of olive oil on an empty stomach. Or, if you don’t like that, add it to your salad or soup right before eating them.

Also, when applied to the skin it helps to give a flawless tan and softer, more flexible skin.

Berries

Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries can support your weight loss efforts. Not only are they delicious and give a feeling of fullness but they also contain anthocyanins: flavonoids capable of reducing fat and sugar.

Tomatoes

Be sure to include tomatoes in your diet: they reduce the amount of lipids in your blood (fat and cholesterol).

You can make tomato juice or add them to your salads. Tomatoes promote satiety, so try eating them whenever you feel hungry.

Business / 5 Guaranteed Ways To Get A Salary Increment by TheBlog: 10:17am On Sep 15, 2017
Who does not want a good salary increment? If only there were a secret formula to this. Unfortunately, there is none. But there are a few ways that can work in your favour to get you the salary hike that you are looking for.

Some industries and roles pay better than the others, and they offer a significantly better scope for career growth. So, when choosing a job, you should keep these things in mind.

Here are few proven ways to get a good salary increment.

1. Do your job well and go beyond the call of duty

Focus on doing your job well. Have a clear understanding of the success measure and continuously work towards it. If you think you need training or mentoring to be a better performer, ask your manager. There are occasions when the manager expects you to do more because it is the need of the hour. Do not shirk away from the responsibility. Actively take up tasks which are beyond what you have been allotted. At the end, the manager will not just look at your performance but also at your eagerness to learn and grow.

2. Be a Smart Worker

Be innovative at what you do. Hard work is important but smart work is better. Try to find out ways and means by which you can achieve the objective with much less effort. Share your ideas with the team to make the team better.

Health / How To Run Correctly by TheBlog: 10:05am On Sep 15, 2017
Good running technique can help reduce your risk of injury and make your runs feel less tiring and more enjoyable.

Here are a few ways on how you can run correctly.

Don’t hunch your shoulders

Your shoulders should be back and down. Keep them relaxed and avoid tensing them. Don’t hunch over as this restricts breathing, allowing less oxygen to get to the muscles.

Keep your head straight

Look straight ahead of you, about 30 to 40 metres out in front, and avoid looking down at your feet. Looking down will create tension in your neck and shoulders. Keep your jaw and neck relaxed.

Keep your hands relaxed

Your hands should be relaxed, but don’t let them flop. Tight hands can cause tension all the way up to the back and shoulders.

Keep your arms at 90 degrees

Your arms should be bent at a 90-degree angle. Try to swing them forward and back, not across your body. The arm movement helps to propel you forward, so swinging them sideways is a waste of energy.

Lean forward while running

Don’t bend forward or backward from the waist as this places pressure on the hips. Some experts advise running in an upright position, but Phillips believes using your body weight to lean forward a bit while running can reduce heel strike and help you land on the middle of your foot.

Family / How To Be A Morning Person by TheBlog: 9:55am On Sep 15, 2017
If we inhabited an idyllic world, we would all be morning people. The alarm clock may never have needed to be invented, and there wouldn’t have been any such thing as the all-too-familiar morning grogginess. Instead, the Internet is rife with practical suggestions on how to be a morning person.

This may not be surprising for most of us reading this article (you’re probably reading this because you’re not a morning person), but being a morning person is much, much harder than we’d like to believe. Because perhaps it is true that some of us are hardwired to be night owls. How do people like us start looking forward to the unpleasantness of the alarm clock every morning?

Let’s take a step-by-step approach to how you can be a morning person.

Why should you be a morning person?

This is the first question that you should be answering for yourself.

Here are some reasons for why you should be a morning person:

– You truly get to spend time with yourself and take things nice and slow. Mornings help you get a head start on the day. With a few hours to yourself before you’re faced with your to-do lists, you can take time to mindfully decide what you would like to do with your day.

– The virtues of being on time (whether it is for work or for a job interview) are much extolled, and for good reason. Getting an early start will ensure that you’re always on time.

– Most things function in the daytime. Another very big reason why you should consider being a morning person is because most places—offices, banks, and corporations— work during the daytime. Being a morning person ensures that you’re in step with the working hours of these organizations.

You need to add about 5 seeds each of cumin, coriander and fennel for every half cup of boiling water. You need to boil these for 10 minutes and let it sit for 2 minutes. Before drinking this, you need to strain the seeds.

2. Sandalwood, Cardamom Or Mint:
The fusion of these ingredients will give a reviving feel to your body. Their potent characteristics help soothe the discomfort caused by pitta dosha, which is the energy responsible for digestion and metabolism.

3. Honey:

Add ½ a spoon of raw honey to cool water and this helps in clearing excess kapha, which is the energy in charge of protecting and governing the body’s structure.

Romance / 6 Types Of Guys That Slide In The DM by TheBlog: 9:46am On Sep 07, 2017
As a social person, you have probably heard the phrase “It goes down in the DM!” one too many times.

No doubt, a few guys who slide into the DM have “good intentions” and have probably gotten into serious relationships. Some are not really even looking to make a romantic gesture, they just want to network. But the ones that come out of left field tend to be from the guys looking for a date, requesting sex, flirting, or smack talking.

There are too many breeds of these guys that slide into DMs, below is a list of 6 of these kinds of guys that slide in the DM. Every girl (slay queen or not) should be able to identify with at least one of the category.

Mr. I am looking for a wife
This guy gets an A* for effort as well as A* for annoyance. This misogynist who somehow found himself on the social media is looking to tick off the marriage box on his to-do list. He has run out of options in their real life (or didn’t have any, to begin with) so he does not want to beat around the bush anymore. Either that or he feels the idea of marriage will get you on his case faster than normal. He follows you, likes all the pictures on your wall and sends the message “Please follow back for marriage” via DM.

Clearly, he does not see anything creepy about the message. This dude does not give up either. He sends so many messages and pictures to show you how much money he has and how he can take care of you.

The Ex that viewed Your Instastory
After 6 months of nursing the heartbreak and finally moving on from the ‘mumu’, you wake up one morning and see a notification on your Instagram. You have a message. You open it – Lo and behold, it is Uncle I-am-done-with you. He saw the picture of a very sexy plate of jollof rice on your instastory and he wants you to know that “funny enough I ate Jollof rice last night”. Ok and so?

In fact, let’s have a conversation. You ate Jollof rice cooked by whom? The beesh I caught you in, ‘init’? Boy bye! I unfollowed you for a reason. Stay in your lane and let me shine gloriously. We broke up for a reason, sliding in my DM to tell me about your day is not going to make up for you drinking garri with my brain. Block.

Technology Market / 9 Things You Didn’t Know Were Invented By Women by TheBlog: 9:41am On Sep 07, 2017
If you are asked to name important inventors, you might start with Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell or Leonardo da Vinci.

But what about Mary Anderson? Or Ann Tsukamoto?

You might not know their names, but they are just two of the female inventors behind everyday objects and scientific innovations. Here are nine inventions we wouldn’t have, if it weren’t for ground-breaking women.

1. Computer software – Grace Hopper

After joining the US Navy during the Second World War, Rear Admiral Grace Hopper was assigned to work on a new computer, called the Mark 1.

It wasn’t long before she was at the forefront of computer programming in the 1950s.

She was behind the compiler, which could translate instructions into code that computers can read, making programming quicker and ultimately revolutionising how computers worked.

Hopper also helped popularised the term “de-bugging” that we still use on computers programmes today, after a moth was removed from inside her machine.

“Amazing Grace”, as she was known, continued working with computers until she retired from the navy as its oldest serving officer, aged 79.

2. Caller ID and call waiting – Dr Shirley Ann Jackson

Dr Shirley Ann Jackson is an American theoretical physicist, whose research from the 1970s is responsible for caller ID and call waiting.

Her breakthroughs in telecommunications have also enabled others to invent the portable fax, fibre optic cables and solar cells.

She is the first African-American woman to gain a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the first African-American woman to lead a top-ranked research university.

3. Windscreen wiper – Mary Anderson

On a winter’s day of 1903, Mary Anderson was visiting New York City when she noticed that her driver was forced to open his window, just to the clear the snow from his windscreen.

Family / 10 Warning Signs The Universe Sends When You’re On The Wrong Path by TheBlog: 1:32pm On Sep 04, 2017
We may not be fully aware of what we are creating moment to moment, but fortunately the universe provides us with many signs to let us know when we are on the right path, and (more importantly) when we are on the wrong path. This article will focus on the warning signs from the universe.

In general, warning signs from the universe occur in the form of unwanted circumstances and events.

These signs are an indication that your energy is headed towards (or currently stuck in) a low vibrational frequency. Your thoughts, feelings and actions are focused negatively, and this is creating unwanted circumstances.

As a result, we will likely bump up against unwanted circumstances from time to time, but that’s OK. As long as we heed these warning signs (without allowing our egos to fixate on them!) we can get back on track quickly.

As you move through your day, it’s a good idea to take note of the warning signs from the universe. Here are a few examples of signs to be mindful of:

WARNING SIGNS FROM THE UNIVERSE

– Stubbing your toe

– Getting stuck in traffic

– Receiving dirty looks or snide remarks from others

– Getting injured

– Unexpected expenses or bills in the mail

Family / 7 Life Lessons We Can Learn From Children by TheBlog: 11:15am On Aug 29, 2017
Children aren’t always the most precious and beautiful people around. They can often be a handful- they’re brazen, they’re bratty and they do what they can to have things their way. But having gotten all that out of the way, children can also make great examples for us adults on how to lead our lives. Children are wonderfully carefree and live life with great abandon, enjoying every moment.

So, why do things change so much for us in adulthood? Does adulthood really have to be as grim and tiresome as it often is?

We decided to put together some surprisingly simple life lessons we can learn from children. Check the out!

1. Make the little things count

Have you noticed how children don’t spend days—or even hours—dwelling on things that make them sad? They live for the little things. Whether it’s your favourite cup of coffee or a walk in the park, find your happiness in the little things. It is where happiness truly lies!

2. Every day is a new day

Children don’t take failure seriously—until we teach them to. Not only should we stop doing that to them, but we should begin to unlearn the significance we assign to failure. Failure and success go hand in hand, and we must learn to take failure in our stride. Each of us will have our fair share of failure, but the important thing is to never stop trying.

3. Never stop learning

It’s interesting to observe how eager children are to grow up. And in this earnest longing of theirs, they forever want to know more. Their curiosity about things around them and their hunger for knowledge is worth imbibing. Meet new people, read as many things as you can, learn a new skill, and nurture a hobby. Most importantly, don’t stop asking questions. Because there’s no better way to learn.
