Health / Organ Shortage: Surgeons Are Saving Human Lives With Pig Kidneys by thedio(m): 8:58am On Apr 27
Surgeons at NYU Langone Health renowned academic medical center lin New York, have performed the world’s first combined heart pump and gene-edited pig kidney transplant on a woman with end-stage kidney diseaThis is a significant milestone in xenotransplantation, the transplantation of organs from animals to humans. Currently, gene-edited pig kidneys hold promise for addressing the organ shortage crisis.se.The feat is coming after surgeons at Massachusetts General Hospital completed the world’s first successful transplant of a pig kidney into a 62-year-old patient with end-stage kidney disease. The latest breakthrough heart pump and gene-edited pig kidney transplant surgeries at NYU Langone were carried out on a 54-year-old woman with end-stage kidney disease.

The patient, Lisa Pisano, from New Jersey, was facing heart failure and undergoing routine dialysis for end-stage kidney disease—but was not eligible for heart or kidney transplants given the reduced likelihood of success due to several chronic illnesses, NYU Langone Health said. The hospital which is affiliated with the New York University School of Medicine and known for its patient care, education, and research, said Pisano was matched to a gene-edited kidney of a pig with an attached thymus from United Therapeutics Corp., called a “UThymoKidney.”

She underwent the two procedures over nine days in early April. The first involved implanting a heart pump, dubbed a left ventricular assist device, LVAD, and the second being a xenotransplant of the pig kidney on April 12.

NYU Langone Health cardiac surgeon Dr. Nader Moazami said in a statement Pisano would not have been eligible for the LVAD procedure without a kidney transplant due to “high mortality in patients on dialysis with heart pumps.

Moazami said: “This unique approach is the first time in the world that LVAD surgery has been done on a dialysis patient with a subsequent plan to transplant a kidney.”

Pisano is currently recovering in the ICU and is expected to have at least a month of rehabilitation before she can potentially be discharged.

A gene-edited kidney is a kidney from a pig that has been modified through CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology to make it more compatible for transplant into a human recipient. It is a new and emerging field of research that holds promise for addressing the organ shortage crisis. edits made to the pig kidney typically involve removing genes that would cause the human body to reject the organ, and adding human genes that help the organ function better in the human body.

The risk of infection from the pig organ is also minimises as pigs carry viruses that could potentially infect humans.

The procedure is a significant milestone in xenotransplantation, i.e., the transplantation of organs from animals to humans.

Xenotransplantation refers to any procedure involving the “transplantation, implantation or infusion” of non-human organs, tissues or cells, according to the Food and Drug Administration. It has become more frequently studied. The procedure is not currently approved by the FDA, but it is allowed under the agency’s expanded access, or “compassionate use,” pathway, which allows patients to seek out experimental treatments under certain conditions, such as life-threatening issues. Certainly gene-edited pig kidneys have the potential to revolutionize organ transplantation and could provide a virtually unlimited supply of organs for people in need.

There are hundreds of thousands of people who are in need of a replacement kidney but have no access due to shortage of donor kidneys. Thousands of people die each day while waiting for an organ, even as more persons are added to the national transplant waiting list. Given the increasing need for organs, doctors hope that xenotransplants will become an alternative to human organs to save more lives while also improving patient quality of life

Foreign Affairs / Graca Machel: Meet Woman Who Became First Lady Of Two Different Countries by thedio(m): 10:10pm On Apr 22
Graca Simbine Machel is the only woman to have become the First Lady of two different countries – Mozambique and South Africa.

She is only person in history to have been the first spouse to two different democratically elected African leaders.

Machel was born on October 17, 1945, in Mozambique. Her journey is one of resilience, activism, and an unwavering commitment to education and social justice.

She excelled in school; earning a scholarship to attend the University of Lisbon in Portugal where she studied German. She developed a love of languages and today is fluent in her native Xitsonga, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, and English.

Her father died three weeks before her birth and left an instruction that she must be educated through high school — a will that was carried out by her older siblings.

After completing high school, the Methodist church granted her a scholarship to study at Lisbon University, Portugal. And she chose to major in languages.Due to surveillance from the Portuguese secret police, she was forced to abandon her education and fled to Switzerland.

In 1973, she returned to Tanzania and joined the FRELIMO where she met her first husband, Samora Machel – the first president of Mozambique.

On June 25, 1975, Mozambique gained independence and Samora Machel was made the first president of the new country.

When he was sworn in as the president of Mozambique, Samora Machel was a widower as his wife, Josina, had died of leukaemia in 1971.

In September of 1975, Graça married Samora Machel and became the first lady of the country. She combined this position with her cabinet portfolio as Education minister till 1986.

Samora Machel died in a plane crash on October 19, 1986, and this made Graca to resign her post as minister.

Machel became acquainted with Nelson Mandela after his release from prison on Robben Island.

They developed a close relationship and were married on July 18, 1988 (Mandela’s 80th birthday). Mandela was President of South Africa and Graca became the First Lady. She assumed the position of the First Lady of South Africa at age 52.

After Mandela’s death in 2013, Graca Mandela continued to be active in national and international efforts to help children and the less fortunate.

She is a founding member of “The Elders” an independent group of former global leaders formed in 2007 by Nelson Mandela to work together for peace and human rights.

Graca Mandela is also the Chancellor of the University of Cape Town, Chancellor of the African Leadership University, President of the School for Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London, and an active leader in numerous other educational and charitable organizations.

The difference remains they built a developed society why you couldn't. Maybe you should learn from them instead of trying to praise your society that produces leaders who steal your wealth pastors who would rather worship at the altar of money and political power than speak truth like Elijah, police who derive pleasure in oppressing innocent masses, judges who are eager to take bribes to bend the truth and traditional rulers who would rather give yahoo boys and drug dealers chieftaincy titles before considering that teacher who has spent 30yrs labouring in the community school. There is nothing about the Nigerian society that is worth emulating.

U r right but do u think their societies were built by these spoilt brat. They r basking in the old glory of their fore fathers.....wait and see how Indians,Chinese and Africans will take over the world from them.

I think we r all guilty thou at diff level and degrees. We r spoiling these kids in the name of,I don't want them to suffer the way I did.

Also we don't want them to see us as wicked old man just like the way many of us see our pale then.

Thou it our responsibility to protect and care for them but we should teach them to stand up for themselves especially the first kids.
An entitled kid may not be able up for him/herself in a difficult time, especially when we r not there.

I think this is one of the reasons the oyinbo kid alway cry depression over a matter we used to joke. Many of them r even lazy to the extent of finding it difficult to work for 8hrs.

Phones / Zakat: 5 Key Facts About Charity In Islam During Ramadan by thedio(m): 8:57pm On Mar 29
In Islam, Ramadan is not only a month of fasting but also a time for giving and charity. Zakat, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, holds immense significance during this sacred period.

As Muslims around the world engage in acts of worship and reflection, understanding the importance of Zakat becomes paramount.

Here are five key facts about Zakat, the obligatory charity in Islam, and its relevance during Ramadan.
eaning and Purpose of Zakat

Zakat, derived from the Arabic word “zaka,” which means purification or growth, is an obligatory form of almsgiving in Islam. It serves as a means of purifying one’s wealth and sharing blessings with those in need.

The primary purpose of Zakat is to address economic disparity, alleviate poverty, and uphold social justice within the Muslim community.

By fulfilling the obligation of Zakat, Muslims demonstrate their commitment to caring for the less fortunate and fostering solidarity among believers.

Calculation and Eligibility for Zakat

Zakat is typically calculated as 2.5% of one’s accumulated wealth and assets over the course of a lunar year. This includes cash, savings, investments, gold, silver, and other valuables that meet or exceed the Nisab threshold, which is the minimum amount of wealth required for Zakat to be obligatory.

However, certain conditions must be met for an individual to be eligible to pay Zakat. They must be of sound mind, possess wealth above the Nisab threshold, and have ownership of the assets for a full lunar year. Additionally, Zakat is not only obligatory on wealth but also on certain agricultural produce and livestock.

Distribution of Zakat

According to Islamic principles, Zakat must be distributed among specific categories of recipients, as outlined in the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60).

These categories include the poor (Al-Fuqara), the needy (Al-Masakin), those employed to administer Zakat (Al-‘Amilin), reconciling hearts (Al-Mu’allafatu Qulubuhum), freeing captives/slaves (Fi-Riqab), debtors (Al-Gharimin), and in the cause of Allah (Fi-Sabilillah).

It is recommended to distribute Zakat locally to support the community’s immediate needs, although it can also be given to those in need elsewhere.

A foremost organisation at the helms of distribution of Zakat across Nigeria is Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation, a faith-based non-governmental organisation.

In 2023, the organisation disbursed a sum of N207,807,592 as zakat proceeds to 2,685 beneficiaries across Lagos State alone.

The Executive Director (ED)/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Foundation, Prince Sulayman Olagunju disclosed this at the 19th edition of the disbursement ceremony in Lagos.

Timing of Zakat Payment

While Zakat is obligatory throughout the year, Ramadan holds special significance for its payment. Many Muslims choose to fulfill their Zakat obligation during Ramadan due to the increased blessings and rewards associated with charitable acts during this blessed month.

Paying Zakat during Ramadan not only purifies one’s wealth but also amplifies the spiritual benefits of fasting and worship. Additionally, giving Zakat during Ramadan allows beneficiaries to partake in the joyous celebrations of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the fasting month.

Impact and Blessings of Zakat

The impact of Zakat extends far beyond the material assistance it provides to those in need. It fosters compassion, empathy, and solidarity within the Muslim community, strengthening the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood.

Moreover, Zakat carries immense spiritual rewards, with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasizing its significance in multiple hadiths.

By fulfilling the obligation of Zakat with sincerity and devotion, Muslims not only fulfill a religious duty but also attain spiritual purification and closeness to Allah.

Summary

Zakat serves as a cornerstone of Islamic teachings, emphasizing the importance of charity, compassion, and social responsibility. During Ramadan, the significance of Zakat is magnified, offering Muslims an opportunity to purify their wealth, support those in need, and draw closer to their faith.

By understanding and practicing Zakat in accordance with Islamic principles, believers uphold.
