......he shouldn't bother campaigning with Yorùbá sef, I think he should rather be using the other 2. LOL!
Your fave lost in your state, mostly because he couldn’t speak the language. One even released a track in local language, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria o. LOL!
He's campaigning in English like the other candidates.
English is the language through which the state is administered.
.....Efik ain't just a Language in the whole Cross River bro. They speak roughly between 40 to 45 languages in that state, no universal Language like in the North, West or East.
This your Gas ẹh, it ain't gonna light ó. LOL! Go speak non-hausa language at campaigns in the North and cruise to victory flawlessly.
People are free to speak whatever language they want to campaign with, wetin go end am na loss, or victory as in the case of Donald Duke.
The universal language of administering states in Nigeria is English, and anybody that speaks English would do just fine.
GRV speaks English, sufficient Yoruba and sufficient Igbo (the two most widely spoken local dialects in Lagos)...if ability to converse in local dialects was the only criteria, he's arguably the most qualified.
izzou: I won't take it away from the Yorubas being liberal. If Onitsha was like Lagos and have non-indigenes occupying positions, we would also say Igbos are liberal.
But it is only Lagos that these things are easily possible.
Lagos has a Yoruba population around 65%...some would argue less.
Anambra/Onitsha should be at least 90% Igbo dominated.
Different people with the different ways they define liberalism.
Some have their liberalism stop once you bring pork or beer to their vicinity.
Some have their liberalism stop once you don't have slots for locals in your private company.
Some have their liberalism stop once you try renting a house with a name that's not of their tribe or from particular tribes.
Some have their liberalism stop when you contest for election in their state.
And on and on it goes...
I've personally seen enough to call propaganda on one tribe being liberal, at least significantly more than others... especially any of the so called big three tribes.
Cosmopolitan cities will operate as cosmopolitan cities world over.
London New York Paris Brussels
These are cities cosmopolitan enough to have blacks and people of other races hold and run the cities.
These cities are liberal because they're cosmopolitan, and not necessarily because the people there have a genetic predisposition to being liberal
We should celebrate because the city that's our most cosmopolitan is "accommodating" citizens of the country
Maybe we can also say the Gbayi people of Abuja are liberal because Ireti Kingigbe is occupies their highest elective position, or Aisha Yesufu from Edo State can run for senate there.
izzou: Using a councillor to make this decision holds little water.
If a ward is dominated by non indigenes, the councillor can easily be a non indigene. A ward dominated by Igbos in Ondo state will easily have an Igbo councillor
Let us see Ondo state give commissioners to an Ebira man, or give HOA tickets or Senate tickets to another tribe.
And here is Donald Duke saying he won election in Cross Rivers even though he didn't speak Efik.
"I couldn't speak the local language..."
Donald Duke shares how he overcame a major language barrier while addressing traditional leaders as a young governorship aspirant in Cross River. pic.twitter.com/E0gWbpH22J
Anybody telling you that you need to speak the local language to administer any of the states in Nigeria is serving you chilled bobo, whether it's Uche P. Okoye, or anybody for that matter.
And winning elections is not quite same thing as governing well, we're not lacking in politicians that can or are winning elections.
38 administrators speaking only Mandarin with English translators by their side will deliver better governance than what we're being served in Nigeria by our indigenous language speaking governors and president.
TemporaryHansel: The yorubas are the most liberal tribe in Nigeria. Anybody accusing them of tribalism is deceiving his or herself.
The kind of opportunities non-indigenes get in the SW, especially Lagos, you cannot get such opportunities in any other zone in the country as a non-indigene.
If the yorubas are beginning to get more tribalistic now, I believe they're simply learning from the rest of the country. Let us all practice the liberalism in every state/zone, or let us do the tribalism together. No need to gaslight anybody.
I'm not Yoruba. I don't support APC or Tinubu. I'm just stating my observation.
Lagos is a melting pot of tribes and cultures and has been since time immemorial.
I don't see this liberalism in SW states that are not Lagos.
Nigerians, especially the big three tribes are clannish.
raumdeuter: Demola Adeleke has similar parentage with GRV. Yet he is so loved in a state deep in the SW maybe because he didn't chose to denigrate his Yoruba part of his ancestry
Maybe when a Half Edo candidate chose to insult his Edo part often and consistently you will understand
GRV is not the first person to lose an election in Lagos to Tinubu/APC... Maybe all the other persons that lost also denigrated their Yoruba ancestry.
What you're trying to do is use electoral results to excuse the deployment of identity politics and dangerous race theory.
BlueRayDick: Whatever backlash you see Gbadebo facing today relating to his half Igbo ancestry is due to his lack of decorum in the past.
Probaby while he was making those tweets he was being a banger boy and never thought of ever contesting as gubernatorial candidate of a Yoruba, unfortunately for him those tweets came back to bite him.
Most Yoruba people resident in Lagos will never vote him in any election because of these tweets. It's not because they hate Igbos but because of how he chose to represent himself in the past.
Anybody who wants to vote for a technocrat outside APC control will vote Funsho Doherty well ahead of Gbadebo.
Those coming after GRV for the tweets he made in the past are free to do that, some I understand where he was coming from, and others are indefensible....not to mention he was already politically exposed as at when he made some of those tweets.
However, GRV is not the first politician that this same tactic has been used on, even OBJ has had his ancestry questioned by the same group of politicians deploying this strategy.
We can't simply say the backlash GRV is facing is because of his previous tweets, I've seen people talking about tainted blood in the course of election, and others having their ethnicities questioned because they have Igbo/Yoruba names or can't speak one language fluently...race ideologies from the playbook of N@zi Germany.
raumdeuter: That could be a contributing factor when the money we should be using the build up GDP and infrastructure were spent on fx anf fuel subsidy
The longer subsidy went on, the more we fall back. Getting rid of subsidy meant that Infrastructure that we have planned since 50yrs ago and abandoned are now being revived.
Getting rid of subsidy is now giving investors the confidence to build refineries without the fear that govt subsidies wont undercut their efforts
Do you think South Africa had a forex and consumer fuel subsidy that ran for decades like Nigeria? Imagine how much they would have spent on it, how much it would have ballooned and maybe the money spent on their country infrastructure and GDP which we now envy would have been spent on providing consumer subsidies
We were experiencing GDP growth WHILE subsidy ran.
raumdeuter: You mean the days the govt was heavily subsidizing our forex rates
Na those times we dey pay for now when we subsidized consumption over production.
We dey get what resembled semi modern trains working circa 2018 in Lagos not even the whole country, we are celebrating a first working refinery(private) in 2023, we have huge infrastructure deficit all over
In 2010 South Africa hosted a world cup and they could show up to 10 world class stadium. Guess how many we had in those good 2010 that were world class in the whole of Nigeria
But as long as we are able to subsidize Forex and fuel everything is great and nice
Was it the subsidy that made our own GDP shrink when other countries were having theirs increase?
Yes, we no be mates, but we get one thing we use pass them in times past.
If you wan know how far back this country don fall, try dey follow some South AFrican accounts on IG or Tiktok...I don't mean their celebs or influencers, I mean random people with a few hundreds or thousand followers.
That life wey Nigeria dey live those their OBJ/Jonathan era, e neva comot for this world, those guys are still living it big time.
It's not normal that a young person gets a job into a proper company and up to 5 years into their career can't pool enough capital to afford a 15 year old Toyota when just over a decade ago, people could afford 5 year old vehicles 2-3 years into their careers.
raumdeuter: The question of which is better would be determined by the foot traffic in which direction
How many South African are japaing to Nigeria vs Nigerians japaing to South Africa
The cost to build a facility for Tinubu alone will build 4 big hospitals for the people. So is it a good use of money
Per capita income South Africa 2015/2026: $6,122/ $7,000 Per capita income Nigeria 2015/2026: $2,600/ $1,556
GDP South Africa 2015/2026: 346.5 Billion / 480 Billion GDP Nigeria 2015/2026: $493 Billion / 377 Billion
Yes South Africa has always been more prosperous on a per capita basis, but at least in the past we could by virtue of our population muster a higher GDP than them.
We know the cancer that befell the country from 2015.
I'm speaking relatively. If we're all suffering the effects of terrorism together and our economy was better than theirs when these issues began, you'd imagine that even with decimation our economy won't have us at a point where our per capital income is one of the worst in West Africa.
raumdeuter: They never did but we have added other problems to ours which was not much during Jonathan e.g insecurity
The problem you've pointed at is terrorism, and we're not the only country suffering from the fallout of Libya, how come it's only us that have had our standard of living decimated in this manner?
We've always had a higher population relative to our West African neighbors, yet just over a decade ago, we were the largest economy in Africa, and had a much better per capital income.
raumdeuter: Your party presented a candidate who actually showed that knowing the local language matters to him even though he could speak English perfectly and a former NBA chairman
The people of Edo didnt pick Asue, maybe if he didnt need translators to speak to his kinsmen maybe it would be governor
And how did that prevent his coming a very distant third, or prevent his abandonment by people who barely two years earlier voted enmaase for LP?
There's no previous governor that has coasted on speaking local dialect (hence Olumide Akpatas dance was especially comical), and as with every other state of the country, all our previous governors have done okay speaking English alone.
raumdeuter: Are schools in Edo govt, documents streets written in Bini language?
Knowing all these theory yet your party LP candidate in your state gubernatorial election waxed a full album in his native language clad in his native attire
raumdeuter: What has GRV shown in his entire career or life that points that he is competent in governance than the other contestants?
Communication is part of governance. And ability to communicate with your constituents is key
Nigeria does not have a dominant language, a president can speak anyone of the languages in addition to the official language and be good
GRV does not speak the dominant language of the people who seeks to govern, maybe he can go to where he can speak to them and govern them
Going by your theory then let's import Chinese men to start governing our states starting with yours Theflint1 supprting Mao Chang Li for Edo governor then we will support your theory
Like I said na for another man state we dey propose these wild ideas
Schools run in English, government documents are released in English, manifestos in English, streets named in English, maps run in English, yet the dominant language of Lagos is not English...Lagos and all other states of the country are run in English.
Is Mao Chang Li a citizen of Nigeria?
There's no administration that the average Nigerian politician will deliver that the average Chinese won't best them in even without speaking a lick of English, not to mention any of the local languages.
BlueRayDick: Na every year APC dey 10m to the population just to justify how the APC controlled government has not been able to fix a whole lot of issues in the state
Next year we go hear 40M, same people that you'd see them arguning that Nigeria's population is 100M.
raumdeuter: Or he should contest in the location where he can connect with the people.
Remove their names paste the profile of all 3 candidates and no will put GRV top choice
How does it make sense that in a state you are trying to become governor you cannot communicate in the local language
The business of GRV is governance, and the official language of the country is English.
Maybe we'd start arguing that a president should be able to speak all the languages in the country before he can contest.
There's no quality of governance that Nigerians want to give in any part of the country that Chinese administrators speaking only Mandarin won't do better in.
At the end of the day, we know that all of these shenanigans is simply low-level bigotry, and not about the quality of administration or intention of the candidate.
Everybody is free to contest for whatever they choose, there are people that don't have a 10th of his popularity contesting and losing elections all around the country.
The more rational thing is to re-echo APC talking points than this pretentious good advice
