Ndawe:
Visa approved this morning at Walter Carrington and the process was a bit tedious, I tire to stand. Also, the Nigerian staff at the embassy are so RUDE & NASTY; I just can't deal. Anyways, I got to the embassy just before 6.30am and my appointment was for 7.30am. The biometric checks and all that pre-interview stuff took a while (see crowd ehn) and it was quite stuffy because the A.C was having issues. So I was directed to window 2 and interviewed by who seemed to be a "new guy" because his supervisor was with him and kinda giving him instructions but they were both very pleasant and we had a few laughs. Here goes:

VO: Good morning and how are you today?
Me: I'm great, thanks and yourself?
VO: I'm fine, thanks for asking; can I have your documents please?
VO: Looks through my passport & I-20 and goes "I see you're going to study in the US, where and what are you going for?"
Me: I'm going for my doctorate in Environmental Sciences with a concentration in Environmental Chemistry at Tennessee Technological University (it was a mouthful sha)
VO: What do you do?
Me: I work as a QHSE Officer (I also said this in full) at Bleep Limited.
VO: How long have you worked there?
Me: Two and a half years.
VO: Okay, so how many schools did you apply to?
Me: I applied to 4 schools and received admission into 3 with two of them being funded offers.
VO: That's great, so why Tennessee Tech?
Me: I needed a school that offered this degree as an interdisciplinary program and will have me take courses across various fields of environmental studies such as Environmental chemistry, env biology, env agriculture, env policy etc; it's a fully loaded program really. I'd also been in contact with Prof. Tammy Boles who as excited as I am to be a part of her on-going research. I was also awarded a full tuition waiver and a generous monthly stipend by the university.
VO: Oh wow, congratulations.
Me: Thanks very much
VO: So who will be funding your studies and what do your parents do?
Me: I was awarded a full tuition waiver and a generous monthly stipend by the university; it's stated in my I20 and both my parents are civil servants.
VO: Oh Okay, nice, then he types for a while and stops to inform me that they've been having network issues.

He consults with his supervisor who was behind him all the while and hands him my passport.
So the supervisor faces me:
Him: Ah, I see you applied to Tennessee Tech; my daughter applied there also (at this point I knew it was sealed, signed and waiting to be delivered grin
Me: Oh really, that's nice. So I also engaged him in a conversation about his daughter and he asked me about my previous studies in the UK and we chatted for about 3 mins while waiting for their network to come back up.
Him: Brings out white paper and circles and says the sweet words grin "your visa has been approved". Have a lovely time in Tennessee and he returns my documents.

I noticed a few things which are not different from what others have been saying here:
1)Please practice and practice but DON'T CRAM. A couple of peeps gave very rehearsed responses, you didn't need to be a VO sef to know.
2)Make sure your facts are straight and go with the mindset that you're going to have a "nice chat" with the VO (they're humans)
3)Those hustlers can sell water to a well. You don't need them, prepare your documents from home and pay no attention to them.
4)Be in your own zone and don't let the plenty blue papers flying around distabillize you because it can, trust me.
5)Please study past transcripts here.
5)God rewards hardwork.

Oludare01; See you soon grin grin

She then smiled the more and brought out white paper, and start saying all their grammar after three working days so so and so. No question about my first denial a week ago.

God settled my case. My case is different. It can only be God. Thank you all

I was at Lagos Consulate this morning. I was slated time was 6:30am so, I had to leave home very early. I got to the Consulate around 5:45am.
Security checks lasted like forever but alas, I got into the interview hall.
Initially, white papers were flying left, right and center but, this changed later as blue papers were also coming out.
My interview was quite short and the VO (in his late 40’s) was pleasant and nice.

Transcript below;
VO: Hello, good morning
Me: Good morning Sir

VO: Pass me your passport, I-20 and SEVIS payment confirmation page
Me: **Passed it**

VO: What are you going to study in the US?
Me: I am going for MS study in Math

VO: Why did you choose this particular school over others?
Me: I am going to the school for 3 major reasons. First, the school offered me a full GTA with tuition waiver and monthly stipends. (*** VO cuts in)

VO: How did you get the assistantship?
Me: The members of the committee in charge of selection for assistantship were quite impressed with my profile and previous academic and professional achievement.

VO: Which other schools did you apply to?
Me: 3 other schools – UNI, BGSU and UL Lafayette (Stated all in full with their respective cities and states)

VO: Tell me about the MS program.
Me: The MS program is a flexible program that focuses on key math areas like Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Numerical Analysis, Applied Math and Operations Research.

**VO typed for some seconds and then gave me the white paper.
**Me smiled and left the hall immediately.

I appreciate everyone on this thread for their wonderful tips. Special shout out to @tolutweety, @profojah1234, @texrem @oludare01, @jesusbabygirl, @libber, @toakins, @folsy, @femi321, @happyday, and everyone who has contributed to this great thread.

Tips
1. If you have funding, state it as one of your reasons for going to the school. I feel this worked for me;
2. Be bold and confident. This cannot be overemphasized;
3. Prepare, prepare and prepare - know your stuff (your course, your program structure etc);
4. Please don’t cram. Just go there and chat with the VO. The interview is nothing out of the ordinary.

Good luck, people and see you at the top.
what your research interest(s)?.

QUICK TIP!!!

This is for those who want to write strong letters of motivation. I figured a way that might work if executed properly. I wanted to transfer from my department into another department which to be honest, I don't think I'm very qualified for. What did I do? I scheduled an appointment with the department's Graduate Coordinator. I went to her office and I asked her questions about the department. I asked stuff like how ranked the department is in the US, what the course is really like especially the courses students are mostly scared to take, placement of recent graduates and what they went on to do with their lives, I asked if they admitted students with backgrounds from totally different disciplines and the chance of getting in (and if so, what are they really considering from such students), what the department was moving towards in terms of development, etc. It was a trap cheesy She told me everything about the department, what they're looking for, was indirectly bragging about how this and that, etc. Lobatan.

I went back home, and composed a letter of motivation. I wrote about myself in a way that plugged into everything that was going on in that department. I personalized everything she told me and made it look like that's what I'm really looking for. Don't want to go into much details, but I really wrote it in a way that reflected all she told me during our meeting. Even my future plans mirrored what most of their recent graduates went on to do. I picked particular interest in that course she said many people didn't like haha cheesy I submitted my application on Monday, Tuesday afternoon, they had already made a decision and she asked for another appointment to come so she'd show me around again and get me more familiar with the department. Na my $255 Paco Rabanne perfume work that one, She wan see baba again cheesy

Now, how to execute this plan. I think you should call the grad coordinator of the department you want to gain admission into. If possible, schedule an appointment via email and let it be a convenient time for them to talk. If you can't call, email could work too. Have a list of questions to ask. The point is to get them to tell you about the department, about the students already in the department, what they're really looking for, what students have gone on to do with their lives after school, etc. Get them to talk, talk, talk. After the conversation, carry your fingers and write a letter that's going to plug into the scope.

Don't know if this makes any sense, I rushed it. Apologies for any typos and incoherence. Cold wan finish my fingers. it's 24F/-4C here. Bye.

Not every school will agree to mail your initial i20 to an address other than one in the applicant's home country. I tried with UMass Lowell and the international student adviser told me it's against the policy of the school to do so. So you should ask if it's allowed. If not, I guess you'll have to use eshipglobal

What advice do you need exactly? It seems everything was clearly spelt out.

Like as been said on this forum countless times, if you know someone in the US, have the i20 mailed to them so they then mail it to you in Nigeria.
If not, just go ahead and pay for the stuff.
I personally recommend using a courrier service that allows you to track your package.

By the way, congrats!

Someone should advice me on what to do. I got the email below from a school in Tennessee. Find below the message;

Wonderful to hear about your admission! Please go ahead and sign up for the payment for your I-20. Here are the directions for that: (which you can also find here: http://www.apsu.edu/international/sending-documents )
Overview of Mailing Process
APSU only mails documents by pre-paid express mail through eShipGlobal using FedEx, UPS, or DHL.
· You can pay to have items shipped to you via express mail through E-Ship Global.
· You create an account and pay for your selected shipping method and provider (FedEx, UPS, or DHL)
· You will be able to track your package and receive it faster.
Note: eShip Global is the only option available for express shipping. We are unable to accommodate labels made through personal FedEx/courier accounts or sending through other services.
Initial I-20 and DS-2019 requests : Wait until we send you an automated email letting you know you have been accepted and your acceptance packet (including I-20 or DS-2019 form) is ready to be sent before you request an eShip delivery. To request express mail service, go to https://study.eshipglobal.com .The site works best with Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox browsers. Do not go to the UPS, DHL or FedEx sites directly.
How to Create an Express Shipping Label
Please complete the following steps to create an express shipping label through E-Ship Global:
1. Visit the eShipGlobal website (Best with Internet Explorer & Firefox).
2. Register/create an account. For this you will need:
· Email address (shipping information will be sent here)
· Mailing address
· Phone number (for delivery).
3. Activate your account. After registering, you will receive an email within 30 minutes prompting you to activate your account. This is required for you to begin using the account. Once the activation process is complete, you will receive a confirmation email.
4. Create the shipping label . Once your account is active, you must:
a. Select "Receive a Package From Universities,"
b. Select “Tennessee” from the map of the United States
c. Select “Austin Peay State University”
d. If applying for graduate studies, select “College of Graduate Studies” If undergraduate, select “Office of Admissions.” If English Language Institute, select “ESL Institute.”
e. Enter your mailing address (U.S. or foreign), phone number and email address. An APSU ID number (A number) is NOT required to submit your request. Please use A002216400 if you do not yet have your A number yet.
f. At the end of the screen, select “ship/quote.” You will receive a quote and have the option to choose your carrier – FedEx, UPS, or DHL.
g. Select your method of payment (i.e. credit card or wire transfer). Please pay close attention to the information submitted on these screens, as errors in the credit card information or submitting incorrect or incomplete address information will result in a delay in the mailing of your documents.
5. Receive confirmation email from eShipGlobal. The final email you receive from eShipGlobal will be confirmation of your order. This email will provide you with detailed information about your shipment (i.e. payment amount, tracking number, mailing address, etc.). APSU will receive a copy of this email at the same time as you, so there is no need to forward us the information unless your adviser requests it.
6. Track your package. APSU should send a confirmation email once your documents are shipped. You will be able to track your documents through the portal within 24-48 hours after your package is sent.

Congrats on getting your I-20. This officially confirms that your school wants you to attend. Check the I-20 to make sure all your details are correct. Name, date of birth, major, start dates. If you've any questions or you think you spotted an error, contact the school before anything else. But if everything is good, your next step if to prepare for a visa interview at the Nigerian embassy.

That involves paying your SEVIS fee, book a date to appear for your interview at the embassy, prepare all documents required for the interview , prepare for the interview. And appear!

To pay SEVIS fee, it's easier if you have someone in the US to pay for you. For the rest, check the embassy website here: http://www.ustraveldocs.com/ng/index.html?firstTime=No
Thank you Happyday. Can you make the payment for me. How much in # will you charge per dollar
