The appointment of the minister is a pointer that Nigerian youths are taking over and all eyes on them in delivering what is expected for the benefit of the nation and to tell the truth, the minister is demonstrating real leadership. Politics / Ministry Of Interior: Tunji-ojo Executing Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by TheRareGem1(f): 7:04pm On Sep 22, 2023 |
Honourable Bunmi Tunji Ojo, Walking the talk with good beginning: In a democratic setting, new administrations give the citizens a ray of hope. Hope of good governance by ways of promise, promise to deliver what was not achieved in the past. But in so many cases peoples hope are also dashed at the end of the day due to incompetence and lack of political will not only on the side of those elected but also those appointed to assist those elected and saddled with the responsibility of presiding over the affairs of government. In the private sector, the performance (KPI) of subordinates automatically translates to the performance of their superior who is either the manager or supervisor, in other words as a leader those you recruit to work with you will determine to a very large extent your achievement in office and this applies to both the private and public sector. The coming of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the President of Federal of Nigeria with the mantra of "Renewed Hope" is a well thought out dream for a nation that is dejected and hold no hope for her citizens due to leadership failure of some many years. Tinubu coming up with the Slogan "Renewed Hope" is not a surprise to those who for close to three decades followed the leadership style of the President objectively without negative bias. If there is any iota of doubt it is in the area of who and who among numerous competent Nigerians will be in the team to deliver the much anticipated renewed hope, but again with a visionary president like Tinubu, selecting a viable team is as simple as anything. For a President who was in the private sector before joining politics, it is expected and anticipated in so many quarters that those to help him drive his policies and programs to achieve his goal of good governance in every sector in the country will definitely have a taste of private sector administration in the past, those that have proven themselves both in the private sector before their foray into politics and this is evident in the appointment of Honourable Bunmi Tunji Ojo an astute Management and ICT expert, an entrepreneur and a youth in his early 40’s who has consulted for notable organisations like the World Bank, Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPC), Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) to mention a few through deployment of problem solving solutions most of which are still very much in use today. As a successful entrepreneur, he does not see the economic benefit in politics but coming to politics means sacrifice to serve humanity. Nigerians in the youth constituency and the Civil Society advocacy for Transparency and Accountability will remain ever grateful to Mr President for discovering and appointing Honourable Bunmi Tunji Ojo as Minister of Interior, proving once again that just as waves push waves in the ocean, new men must work hand in hand with older men for institutions to grow, we thank Mr President. And the basis for our early appreciation is not farfetched, Honourable Bunmi Tunji Ojo was sworn in as a cabinet member alongside 44 other Ministers on the 21st day of August, 2023 to serve in the Ministry of Interior saddled with the responsibility of ensuring internal security, granting Nigerian Citizenship, business permits and expatriate quotas and also oversee agencies such as the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil defence Corps, Nigeria Correctional Service and lately the National Identity Management Commission. Taking Nigeria Immigration service for our analysis, it is a known fact that this agency under the Ministry of Interior saddled with the responsibility of border control and the issuance of Nigerian international passport has since so many years struggled to meet her obligation to Nigerians and that is also evident in the speech of the Honourable Minister when he took over the mantle of leadership of that ministry, he said and i quote "I am here to perform" in other words he knows the problems confronting the agency and also believes they are solvable. Haven promised to clear the backlog of more than two hundred thousand international passport request pending in the service, he immediately settled down to work and what else can lovers of Nigeria and democracy expect, in less than three weeks in office Honourable Bunmi Tunji Ojo has proven himself as a performer in whatever role he is given by delivering one Hundered and Sixty Thousand international passport out of the two hundred thousand backlog in the service. This is a feat that we in the Conference of Civil Society for Transparency and Accountability sees as commendable and worthy of celebrating, and we do this to encourage the Minister and his team to do more for Nigerians as we believe in his capacity and political will to do more and also right the wrongs and that no matter the number of his detractors, posterity will always be on the side of the just. We also do this to challenge other cabinet members to as a matter of urgency hit the ground running and also stamp their feet on the ground to do that which is right and just no matter whose ox is gored. According to G.K Nelson "Successful people are not gifted, they just work hard then succeed on purpose" We commend the Minister for showing leadership through hard work, even as he sacrifices his comfort by working day and night with his team to formulate and implement policies and strategies that will turn around the narrative of the Ministry. We in the Civil Society believe that the period of "Renewed Hope" is a period of rising for Nigeria and for those that will ask, for whom is it rising ? the answer is, it is rising for young and old, it is rising for the men and women as it is rising for the rich and poor and it is rising for the affluent and the common men, it is also rising for those in the rural areas and those in the urban centers, it is rising for those in the private sector and those in the public sector, it is rising under the Renewed Hope for the benefit and the betterment of Nigerians regardless of their tribe, ethnicity, religion and culture, it is rising for the northerners and southerners for the benefit of all. But all lovers of Nigeria must agree that if Nigeria must attain her rightful place among committee of nations it must do so through our collective shoulders, each and every citizens must drop those things that divide us and embrace things that unite us. As i conclude, i will leave us with the words of John Donne "The best leaders i know see success as a group endeavour, they call out the best in their folks, so that the entire team or enterprise can take part in creating success, they carve the part together. But what is even more important is that, they ask for and accept help along the way. Good leaders know they can’t do it all themselves and that even the strongest person needs support" By these words we urge all stakeholders in the Ministry of Interior and outside of it to support the transformation agenda of the Honourable Minister, we also encourage the media and civil society to lend their voice and support through positive reporting so as for the rising of Nigeria through the Ministry of Interior under Honourable Bunmi Tunji Ojo to see the light of the day for the overall betterment of Nigeria and her people. Politics / FG To Commence Harmonization Of Identity Cards by TheRareGem1(f): 5:21pm On Sep 16, 2023 |
Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo says talks will soon begin among all relevant stakeholders in the national identity system to work out modalities on how to harmonise all the various identity systems for seamless and efficient service delivery in the country. He said the discussion would involve all the relevant stakeholders concerned, ranging from the INEC, Banks, FRSC, NPC, Immigration, NCC etc. with the NIMC as a statutory body empowered by law to achieve the target in no distant future. The Minister disclosed this on Saturday and at the 5th Identity Day commemoration held at ICC, Abuja with the theme: Identity As Catalyst for Nigeria’s Development ” – Examining the Role of Identity in Key Government Programs of Social Safety Net, Financial Inclusion, promotion of Good Governance and Transparency. He said the harmonization and management of national identity was what the country needed now as a major means of mitigating and controlling crime as well as for national development. The event was the first one under the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and since the movement of the NIMC to the Ministry of Interior. Ojo, who described the theme as a catalyst to Nigeria’s development underscored the importance of ID management on nation building, saying that identity remains key in the everyday lives, which is why it is commemorated this Day every year. Looking at the progress made so far in ensuring digital identity inclusion for everyone, the minister said future solutions can be put in place to ensure better lives for the citizens and legal residents of Nigeria. ”We live in the modern digital age where a secure and verifiable identity is vital for any set system to work. “You can’t access bank services and get ATM cards without proving your identity. You can’t even engage with others on online social media platforms without first verifying your identity. So, identity is key in our everyday lives, which is why we commemorate this Day today. “I have stated that the harmonization and management of national identity is a major means of mitigating and controlling crime as well as for national development.” “With a database of over 100 million National Identification Numbers in the National Identity Database, NIDB, NIMC provided essential access to attaining this goal along with other major stakeholders. As a member of the Ministry of Interior family, he said that the joining of NIMC with other sister agencies will not only improve access by the general public to services like passport acquisition renewal but also the likes of efficient border security technology, effective handling of insecurity around the country, protection of critical national assets and infrastructure, reformation and reintegration of rehabilitated offenders in the society as well as improved emergency and fire response times. He urged all stakeholders to join hands in ensuring the successful implementation of positive policies regarding national identity as it affects government social safety net and financial inclusion programmes. The ID Day is all about setting a day out nationally and internationally in commemoration and appreciation of the real value of ownership of verifiable identity in the everyday lives. In her address, Acting Director General/CEO of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote said harmonization of all the various identity systems remain a top priority in her agenda as CEO of NIMC. She said the decision by President Tinubu to appoint her as the Acting Director General/CEO of NIMC, “is a profound testament to the President’s unwavering faith in the Commission’s recent achievements and his optimistic outlook on our future endeavors”. “We embark on a journey that resonates deeply with our national aspirations. World Identity Day holds exceptional importance as it provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the pivotal role that identity plays in our lives and its profound impact on society. “It is a day to recognize the transformative power of identity in shaping our destinies, safeguarding our rights, and connecting us as global citizens. ” Identity is more than a mere card or a number; it symbolizes our existence, our entitlements, and our place within society. It unlocks access to essential services, social benefits, and pathways to personal and economic growth. It stands as a testament to our individuality while serving as a bridge to our shared humanity.” “At the National Identity Management Commission, our vision remains unwavering: to provide every citizen and legal resident with a digital primary identity, making it a universal reference point. “We firmly believe that access to a reliable identity is not a privilege but a fundamental right. It serves as the cornerstone upon which we can build a more inclusive, secure, and prosperous society. Odusote, who acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead, said she would ensure universal access to a trusted identity, regardless of background or circumstances, demands innovation, unwavering dedication, and global collaboration. Continuing, NIMC DG said in the face of emerging technologies and evolving threats, NIMC would remain vigilant in safeguarding the integrity and security of identity systems. While embracing digital transformation, we must prioritize the principles of privacy and data protection. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/09/fg-to-commence-harmonization-of-identity-cards/ 2 Likes

Politics / Passports: Nigerians Applaud Interior Minister For 60,000 Applicants Clearance by TheRareGem1(f): 2:20pm On Sep 13, 2023 |
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has said that a backlog of almost 60,000 passports has been cleared in four working days. “As of this morning, I can tell you that about 60,000 passport backlogs have been cleared, specifically 59,906. “On Wednesday, September 6, 2023, when I gave the 2-week ultimatum, we had over 200,000 backlogs. “We have recorded progress, and I maintain my word that those backlogs must be cleared. Nigerians have taken to different social media platforms to shower praise on the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for not only not making the promise but also fulfilling it. One of the prominent Instagram blogs, Instablog, posted the development, and the comments section is full of hope, praise, and happiness. Reacting to the new development, Violet Queenmother said, “So they can work like this when ordinary renewal of my passport takes 6 months. They know how to work; they just decide to make life difficult for us,” she concluded. Similarly, ayinke.ade noted, “as it should be. Not those unnecessary bottlenecks.” For benorac7, “We know the right thing to do; we just need people who are ready to do the work to be in those key positions, and everything will work out fine in Nigeria. I salute the effort of the Minister of Interior. Ekitiketan noted, “This is a great development. The kind of leadership we need right now” Mona_lisa_perry recalled when the minister gave the pledge to clear the backlog last week, “Indeed! Not business as usual. Just last week, the minister made the pledge about clearing the backlogs; now, 60,000 applications have been cleared by NIS. It is good that he is keeping them on their toes. Nigerians, there is hope for a great Nigeria. He concluded. While ennyzee says, “we can actually work to make things work here, especially when there is political will and determination,” Olatunde Charles pointed out that “it means those immigration people had just been very lazy or intentionally delayed the processing to cause scarcity”. _faiad questioned, “How are they able to clear 60,000 booklets in four days? But they always told us there were no booklets and that they would only be issuing passports to the highest bidders. See how we punish ourselves and blame the government?” nichecarver12 noted that “what has been dragging Nigeria behind have been sabotage actions. Now that a minister knows his job, anybody who is going to be a saboteur has been told to either sit up or move out. It’s as simple as that. Most of these bottlenecks are caused by people in the NIS offices intentionally delaying the procedure so that they can have the avenue to make huge amounts of extra money from Nigerians.” “Imagine what is daily ringing in the imagination of staff ears: ‘Either you work or give us space. No more public holidays for passport officers.” Calebmgbah wrote. Famo_cares asserts that, “With this achievement, I hope Nigerians understand that it is we Nigerians that are Nigeria’s problem. I am sure all the staff at the NIS, comprising all tribes and religions, including the President and the governors we hate so much, have relatives in the civil service, and if they do, they are all Nigerians. Yet the same civil servants are the same people sabotaging and extorting Nigerians from getting their passports, and we blame the government. Who is the government? Are the people working there aliens? Until Nigerians change their attitudes and become patriotic, we will never move forward. In the same vein, leadership also matters a lot. Now that it is obvious that former minister Rauf Aregbesola was an abysmal failure in the office that he couldn’t achieve for eight ( years, another minister has done it in less than two weeks of taking the same office. I urge the minister to keep an eye on the staff at the NIS; those who are not ready to work should be kicked out, and passionate Nigerians should be engaged. God bless Nigeria, he prayed. "With this guy in charge, I won’t have to wait for six months to renew my passport.” Iam_maguire concluded. https://www.chronicle.ng/2023/09/passport-nigerians-interior-clearance/ 3 Likes 1 Share

Politics / Assessment Of Inec By Laolu Akande: Nigerians Send Him, Channels Tv Accolades by TheRareGem1(f): 11:00pm On Sep 11, 2023 |
Assessment OF INEC BY FORMER PRESIDENTIAL AIDE, AKANDE: NIGERIANS SEND HIM, CHANNELS TV ACCOLADES Nigerians are applauding both the former presidential aide, Laolu Akande, and Channels TV for offering Nigerians Insight and objectivity in his news analysis of burning national issues recently. Akande, a veteran newsman, lately has been featured on ChannelsTV top programmes such as Sunrise Daily and Politics Today. Before Akande was named a Presidential Aide, he had a widely successful media career as a journalist, having risen to the position of a newspaper editor in Nigeria in the late 90s and later had many years of professional practice abroad, with coverage experience at both the United Nations, and White House where he has remained the only Nigerian journalist to ever interview a sitting US President. Last Friday, the veteran journalist's comment during his appearance on Seun Okinbaloye's public affairs programme on Channels TV, Politics Today, where he advised the government of the need for proper coordination of its policies had drawn reactions from scores of Nigerians, who applauded his objectivity and punditry on his expert review of issues without verbosity. Even moreso his comments on the performance of INEC drew both critical and commendable comments. When asked to assess the policy direction of the Tinubu administration, Akande said, "President Tinubu has started on a good note by implementing sound policies that will undoubtedly benefit Nigeria," but he contended that, the Presidency must "organize itself effectively to ensure the successful implementation of these policies by paying close attention to ministries like humanitarian, where immediate action is necessary." While noting that putting together a capable and efficient cabinet is not an easy task, Akande charged that for the current hardship Nigerians faced the President needed to focus on ministries that are more readily able to provide succor. He acknowledged that the President understood the hardship as reflected in his recent national broadcast, and reasoned that there was an urgent need to immediately address and arrest the precarious situation. "There are two things the President needs to do, my views now, to first of all understand that if there is not effective coordination of all the good things that he has spoken of, that would be the end of important things that you want to do. And two offices are important for that, the offices of the Chief of Staff and Secretary to the Government of the Federation," Akande said. Besides, commenting on the recent verdict of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT), the former presidential aide was critical of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) for its inability to electronically transmit results of the presidential and National Assembly polls as the electoral commission itself had promised. He said this has reduced the commission’s trust level among Nigerians, premising his position on the fact that in the lead up to the February 2023 exercise, INEC repeatedly said it would transmit polling unit results to the INEC's Result Viewing Portal (IReV), but which did not happen during the past elections. Nigerians across different national divides have poured torrent of praises on the ChannelsTV and the accomplished journalist's review of the burning national issues in their reactions on social media. Dame Annah, in her reaction via @DameAnnah, thanked Channel's TV for bringing Akande on board, saying, "Kudos to @channelstv on this one. First time a public analyst is actually being objective. I must commend Channels TV, having a former presidential aide who can speak the truth without insulting the govt of the day is a big plus to their channel. Good job!" A responder, Balogun Ridwan commenting via @BalogunREADONE wrote, "Thank you for a job well done... your views and perspective will always be respected... big ups to you," Another, Uzo Dan-Macaulay, commenting via his @ProNigeria1 handle said, "It is great that Channels TV has a big gun who is a former presidential aide on its programme, Laolu Akande, doing informed analysis on contemporary national issues with sound objectivity. The crowded terrain is now becoming neutralised. Good! Kudos!" "A brilliant one from Laolu Akande, a liberated veteran! Here, he is commending them, the APC guys should rather play this up. He has always balanced his submissions, fair is fair, Akande is not a frivolous person, not even a politician who takes sides but a seasoned journalist!" On his own, Moh Prince, commenting via @PrinceMohFahad, said, Akande has "Always given insightful views on national politics," while Maxwell Jones, commenting via @Maxwell76421814, lauded Akande, saying, "You made a critical point, Sir. I hope the President will do the needful." Also, Adelekan A. who posted his comment from his @adelekanadeoye2 handle, agreeing with Akande said, "You're on point, the president must set his eyes on some critical ministries to improve the standard of living of Nigerian @Bisuclef I think @channelstv has found a match in @akandeoj. His wealth of experience as a journalist is easily identifiable if you listen to his analysis. He's objective, succinct, fair, & balanced. His transition from print journalist to spokesperson to TV analyst should be studied. @Temmy_ didn't hear anything negative about what Mr. Laolu said here about the government. This is a very pure political analysis .. Very objective. @CarolineAdjeh I must commend Channels TV. Having a former presidential aide who can speak the truth without insulting the government of the day is a big plus to their channel. @_BigGrin_ Everybody knows Laolu Akande is not speaking the mind of Osinbajo. People are just being funny. @adelekanadeoye2 You're on point, the president must set his eyes on some critical ministries to improve the standard of living of Nigerians. @PrinceMohFahad Always giving insightful views on national politics @ProNigeria1 A brilliant one from Laolu Akande, a liberated veteran! Here, he is commending them, the APC guys should rather play this up. He has always balanced his submissions, fair is fair, Akande is not a frivolous person, not even a politicians who takes sides but a seasoned journalist! 1 Like 1 Share |

Politics / ACS/ACW 2023: Africa Can’t Be Compelled To Dramatic Energy Transition— Osinbajo by TheRareGem1(f): 8:51pm On Sep 05, 2023 |
Amidst ongoing efforts by global economies to transition to clean and sustainable energy, Nigeria’s former Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, says African leaders cannot be compelled to phase out fossil fuel use without effective climate financing for the continent. Mr Osinbajo made this known while addressing Nigerian journalists in Kenya on Monday after moderating a panel session on “Carbon Markets in the Global South” at the ongoing Africa Climate Summit/Week in Nairobi, Kenya. “So we cannot be asked to do a dramatic transition. We are saying we need Carbon market, we need finance to be able to transition,” Mr Osinbajo said. He noted that to transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy, there must be some use of fossil fuel, especially gas, as transition fuel. https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=d552NnY2ye9NDLY2&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.premiumtimesng.com%2F&source_ve_path=MTY0OTksMjg2NjQsMTY0NTA2&feature=emb_share&v=8XETQHeVZZg “It is impossible to expect countries) that are gas or fossil fuel rated to just suddenly change from gas or fossil fuel straight into renewable energy,” the former vice president said. He added that no country anywhere in the world has been known to develop industries using purely renewable energy, and all of the developed countries have used fossil fuels to some extent to attain their feat. Based on this, Mr Osinbajo explained that African countries cannot be asked to do a dramatic transition. The Africa Climate Summit/ Week As the inaugural Africa Climate Summit kicks off on Monday in Nairobi, Kenya, President Bola Tinubu and Mr Osinbajo are some of the African leaders expected from Nigeria to address key issues around climate change, including green growth, carbon pricing, climate financing, climate adaptation, renewable and clean energy, among others The summit is championed by Kenyan President William Ruto, who doubles as the Chairman of the Committee of Heads of State of the African Union on Climate Change. It is themed: “Driving Green Growth and Climate Finance Solutions for Africa and the World,” with the crucial objective of delivering green growth and climate finance solutions for Africa. According to the organisers, throughout the event, Heads of state are expected to join forces to develop a united “stance on vital issues such as adaptation and resilience, renewable energy, sustainable development, food and water security, and financing for climate action on the African continent At the summit, discussions are expected to serve as vital preparations for the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP 28, scheduled for November in the United Arab Emirates Climate finance Mr Osinbajo, who was recently appointed as a “Global Advisor”, hinted that Africa needs finance to be able to transition We are saying we need a Carbon market; we need finance to be able to transition. You don’t tell a country that has tremendous fossil fuel resources to one day just switch to renewable energy, no,” he said. He explained that experts came to the summit to craft an African agenda because Africa needs finance to fulfil its climate pledges. “We are saying that, don’t say transition without supporting that transition with adequate capital,” he said Mr Osinbajo said climate capital will come from the carbon market being proposed and that it is the reason why African leaders are pushing for it, in addition to other sources of finances. He said Africa needs between $6 trillion and $7 trillion if it will do a successful transition Asked if there is hope for Nigeria, he replied in the affirmative, saying, “Indeed there is hope for Nigeria”. Similarly, when asked what he thinks Africa will do differently at the forthcoming 28th edition of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) later this year, Mr Osinbajo said Africa has its own agenda, which is why the ACS conference is important. He explained that African negotiators also present an agenda, which is why they are saying Africa can become the first truly Green civilisation in the world. “We can become the first continent that will industrialise and grow its economy using renewable energy,” he added. To achieve this, Mr Osinbajo said Africa needs investments and support and that the pledge of $100 billion is not what they are asking for. “We are saying that we can have a fundamental change in the way that we approach our net zero ambition if we invest in Africa,” he noted. “The truth of the matter is that, if Africa developed at a trajectory as the global north using fossil fuel, no one is ever going to achieve net zero by any target, so the investment has to come into Africa so that it becomes the first truly green civilisation and if we are able to do so everyone will achieve their net zero objectives.” Climate Action for Africa During his address at the summit’s opening plenary, Mr Ruto noted that in the face of the profound challenges posed by climate change in Africa, the continent stands unwavering in its commitment to confront the existential threat to all of humanity. “Africa’s abundance of wind and solar energy can power our development, creating jobs, protecting local economies, and accelerating the sustainable industrialisation of the continent, “ the Kenyan president said. For them to lead the way toward a sustainable and prosperous future for the continent and the world, finance and technology must be provided to developing countries. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/619619-acs-acw-2023-africa-cant-be-compelled-to-dramatic-energy-transition-osinbajo.html#:~:text=Amidst%20ongoing%20efforts%20by%20global,climate%20financing%20for%20the%20continent. |
