Politics / Subsidy: FG To Fix One Refinery Before December — Kyari by TheRareGem1(f): 7:38pm On Jun 01, 2023
The Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari, has revealed that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has concluded an arrangement to have one of the four refineries repaired and operating at an optimal level before the end of the year.

Kyari made the revelation when he visited the party secretariat for a meeting with the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

The NNPC boss, who arrived at the premises at about 12.30 pm, was warmly received by the chairman and members of the National Working Committee.

Addressing newsmen after the session, Kyari explained that following the hike in pump price and the resultant effect on commercial fare, the president is working out some palliative measures to ease the pains of Nigerians.

He also added that there is an ongoing process of rehabilitation to ensure one of the refineries is ready this year.

“I’m aware that Mr president has directed some engagements and some palliatives will be put in place. I am very sure this will happen. There is an ongoing process of rehabilitation. One of them will come this year, the second one will come on stream next year and then the third will follow thereafter.

“Of course, it is very obvious that we can no longer afford subsidy. Subsidy bills have piled up. The country is not able to settle NNPC for the money we are spending on subsidy. Therefore pricing this petroleum at the market price is the right thing to do at this point in time and I believe it would benefit the country in the long term,” he said.

Recall Tinubu had affirmed during his swearing-in ceremony that his administration would not continue to pay subsidy on petroleum products.

He said the Federal Government was struggling to fund subsidies, noting that it was no longer justifiable to continue.

The development had triggered a 100 per cent hike in transport fares, while long queues resurfaced at fuel stations across Lagos, Abuja, Ilorin, Benin, Asaba, Port Harcourt, Kano, Makurdi and other major cities and urban areas.

To worsen the situation, many outlets shut down their facilities and refused to dispense fuel to motorists, further creating scarcity and panic buying at the fuel stations that were opened to customers.

But Kyari confessed on Thursday said that the country can no longer sustain such an expensive regime.

According to him, over 38 per cent of the total fuel distributed in this country is consumed by four states namely Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Rivers.

He said, “There was subsidy in 2022 but in 2023, not a single naira was provided for the purpose. And ultimately while we held back our fiscal obligations, we still have a net balance of over N2.8trn that the federation should have given back to the NNPC. For any company, when you have negative N2.8 trn, there is no company in the whole of Africa that will lend to you. You cannot have receivables. The provision of subsidy is there but absolutely there is no funding for it. It means it is only on paper. It doesn’t exist.

“We can no longer bear it. If we continue, we will run into defaults and the defaults of NNPC is the default of Nigeria. Once NNPC goes into defaults and liquidity, it affects every borrowing done by the country. Even the subnational. Your lenders will come back to you and say your country can no longer pay. The only way you can stop this is to stop this conversation around subsidy. It is why Mr President announced that the subsidy is gone. In 24 hours, the bond market appreciated. It is nothing else other than the statement around subsidy and balancing of the apex market. These two elements are major concerns that every investor all over the world, and every partner that we have is worried about.

“Before today, the average subsidy level was N400bn every month. There is nothing anybody can do about it. There is this common argument that the masses will suffer. I agree that once you increase prices of this proportion, as it has happened, it will have an impact on inflation. There is no doubt about it. The market determines what happens next. Even inflation in very many countries goes up when you have the economic indices become difficult.

“Mr president’s target is to have seven per cent growth of GDP. You cannot have it if you have this disruption in your demands and consumption pattern. Very many of us here have at least two cars in our houses including myself. When you buy fuel of 100 litres in an SUV, you are literally subsidising three litres with 100 naira for all of us.

“Even the consumption itself is clearly skewed in locations and states where the level of economic activities are higher than the others. It is very understandable and that is why people can afford it in Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Kano. So over 38 per cent of the total fuel distributed in this country ends up in these places. All the other parts of the country suffer for it and you can see the relativity. Imagine the per capital basis?

Politics / Pictures Of Osinbajo Playing Chess With Children Of Chess In The Slum Africa Grp by TheRareGem1(f): 12:41pm On May 27, 2023
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo SAN in honor of Children’s Day invited the Chess in The Slum Africa Group led by Tunde Onakoya to play Chess in the Aso Rock Presidential Villa and was also taught how to play Chess by a Chess Champion Ferdinand Maumo. 26th May 2023.

Cliché as it may sound, children hold the future of our nation and indeed the world. We must pay attention to developing their talents and capabilities. Yesterday, I had the privilege of hosting the "Chess In Slums Africa" group at the State House led by @Tunde_OD, the Founder.

Chess is a cerebral and complex game but this extraordinary group took chess training to struggling neighbourhoods, training underprivileged children to play chess, some even under the age of five.

In five years, they have trained over 10,000 children and produced several national, and regional chess champions. Of the number, some are children with special needs, one of them, a child with cerebral palsy but a chess genius!

Several of the children now have scholarships to go to school, invitations to international competitions and as Tunde Onakoya said yesterday, they have even moved “from the slums to Aso Villa”.

A remarkable benefit of the chess training is the discovery that many have strong numeracy skills, and are particularly astute at code-writing and several other IT skills. The group has in collaboration with others focused on developing these special skills too.

So by the vision and compassion of one young man, turned into action, talented children are rising from poverty and physical challenges to confident, motivated children, winning local and international laurels.

Chess In Slums has shown us that the efforts of a few can turn around the fortunes of thousands of children. What can you & I contribute to developing the talents of children especially those living in deprived conditions?

I wish every Nigerian child a very happy Children’s Day.

The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, H.E Prof Yemi Osinbajo will lead a team of distinguished experts in observing the general elections in Sierra Leone on 24th June 2023.

The Secretary-General constituted the observer group upon invitation from the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone.

Prof Osinbajo is a Professor of Law and one of the nation’s leading legal experts, serving as Vice President of Nigeria since May 2015. He will be joined by recognised dignitaries from various fields including, politicians, legal, media, gender and election administration professionals from across the Commonwealth to carry out the task.

Speaking on the appointment, the Secretary-General said:

“I am grateful to His Excellency Prof. Yemi Osinbajo for accepting my invitation, to undertake this important area of our work in deepening democracy across our Commonwealth - despite his busy schedule and overseeing a seamless transition of his government. As a senior statesman from the region, HE Osinbajo understands in depth the challenges across West Africa and I am confident he will lead a brilliant team.”

Prof. Yemi Osinbajo expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to Chair the Commonwealth Observer Group. He said:

Mandate of the Commonwealth Observer Group
Upon arriving in Sierra Leone, the mandate of the Commonwealth Observer Group will be to observe the electoral process and provide an independent assessment of whether the election has been conducted in a credible manner. The Group will then report on the conduct of the elections in accordance with the standards to which Sierra Leone has committed itself, including its own laws.

In line with Commonwealth methodology, The Group will consider, among other things, whether conditions exist for credible and inclusive elections, including a fair election environment; whether public media has been impartial; the transparency of the entire process; and whether voters are free to express their will.

Upon completion of its assignment, the Group will submit its recommendations in a report to the Commonwealth Secretary-General, who will subsequently share it with the Government of Sierra Leone, the Electoral Commission, political parties and all Commonwealth governments.

Politics / Laolu Akande: Serving Nigeria For 8 Years With Osinbajo A Great Honour by TheRareGem1(f): 12:43pm On May 21, 2023
The spokesman of Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, Laolu Akande, has said that working closely with his principal for the past eight years is a matter of great honour and privilege to him.
He said having the opportunity to work under President Muhamadu Buhari’s government through the Office of the Vice President was an answer to the prayers he made when he left Nigeria for the United States in 1998.

Akande made this known on Friday, May 19, 2023, during an interview session, “Daily Politics,” on Daily Trust TV, where he reflected on his journey serving as a spokesman to the number-two man in Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria, just a few days before the end of their tenure on May 29, 2023.

The veteran journalist said it has been a “thrilling” experience for him, saying he had always wanted to be part of people who would fix Nigeria and set its feet on the path of progress.

“It has been a very thrilling experience for me. I also consider it a great privilege and a wonderful opportunity to be able to serve your country, especially at that level, for someone who has always wanted to be part of fixing the country.

“I remember when I left in 1998 to go to the United States, I had a prayer with God, and I said I wanted to come back to Nigeria and work in a government if that government would be a government of serious reform. And when I got the opportunity to do that, I felt that it was an answer to my prayer. So, serving for these eight years at that level and with the Vice President and the President is a great privilege and honour,” Akande said.

Speaking on what made him leave the US and join the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign trail in 2014, the celebrated journalist said Osinbajo was the major factor, saying the VP’s reputation was ahead of him after his successful stint as Lagos State Attorney General for eight years between 1999 and 2007.

His words: “In 2013 and 2014, there was this clamour that somebody like General Buhari would be a very good candidate when they were forming the APC, and I was part of that hope, expectations, and clamour pushing behind the scenes.

“But in 2014, when the candidate of the APC then picked the Vice President as his running mate, when I heard the news in New York, I tapped my wife in the bedroom and said, you know what, I am going to support that guy.”

“I had met him just once before that time, in 2012, in New York. Before that time, he had garnered a considerable reputation as the guy who reformed the Lagos judiciary when he was Attorney General from 1999 to 2007, and a lot of what he did became a model for the country.

“So, when I met him in 2012, his reputation was ahead of him. We probably had a five-minute discussion at an award ceremony for him by the Nigerian Lawyers Association in New York; that was our previous meeting.

“When he was picked as a vice presidential candidate, I said, “Look, maybe your prayer is about to be answered; you have to go and support this guy; that was why I came to join the campaign.”

Reminiscing on his earlier career as one of the youngest editors in the 90s, Akande said he began his journalism career with the Guardian Newspaper at a tender age, where he did the one-year compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme after he graduated from the University of Ibadan (UI), and he was retained as a reporter.

“I started in 1989 as a freelance reporter for the Guardian; I was still in school in 1989, up to 1990, then I was posted to the Guardian for my NYSC, so I did my NYSC in the Guardian, and they offered me a job even before I finished the NYSC sometime in March as a staff reporter, and I was with them up till 1993 when I joined The News, which later became the Tempo, and maybe 1994 or 1995, when I went to the Nigerian Tribune,” Akande said.

Politics / I Am Not Celebrating - The New Ndic Chairman by TheRareGem1(f): 10:53am On May 20, 2023
Abdulhakeem Abdullateef, the new chairman of the governing board of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), has warned friends and associates to stop putting pressure on him with requests.

In a post on his verified Facebook account, Mr Abdullateef, a former Lagos lawmaker and commissioner, said he is ready to lose friends and relationships to be a “model for zero tolerance for corruption and lawlessness.”

“I will not award any contract throughout my tenure because that is not a part of my responsibilities,” he wrote, adding that he won’t interfere in the functions of the management of the insurance regulator.

“I am just a leader whose primary assignment is to LEAD the Governing Board of NDIC in good corporate governance and best practices in accordance with established rules and regulations. I will not do otherwise,” Mr Abdullateef, an Islamic cleric, added.

On Wednesday, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Mr Abdullateef to serve as the chairman of the board of NDIC following the confirmation of the board members by the senate.

In his statement, he noted that he is neither excited nor celebrating his new feat: “My appointment and confirmation as NDIC Chairman is a trial from my Lord and not a success yet. Kindly reserve the congratulatory messages until the day I succeed in leaving this organisation better than I met it.” said Mr Mobolaji, a Lagos-based Islamic cleric.

The full statement by the new appointee is reproduced below.

I AM NOT CELEBRATING
1. My appointment and confirmation as NDIC Chairman is a trial from my Lord and not a success yet. Kindly reserve the congratulatory messages until the day I succeed in leaving this organisation better than I met it.

2. Stop putting pressures on me with requests. I will not honour your requests. I am going to be very different. I am ready to lose friends and relationships. I will not award any contract throughout my tenure because that is not a part of my responsibilities. I will not interfere in the functions of Management. I am not excited about my new office and I am ready to quit if I am asked to leave tomorrow. You have no idea what my role entails. I will not take any step to betray my education, experience and exposure. No threat or pressure can recruit me into the stinking system we complain of.

3. I am just a leader whose primary assignment is to LEAD the Governing Board of NDIC in good corporate governance and best practices in accordance with established rules and regulations. I will not do otherwise.

4. My team promises to be a model for zero tolerance for corruption and lawlessness.

5. My job as an Islamic Preacher is far better than this trial and for your information, I have not left serving my Lord.

6. To all those concerned, please stay on your lane. Do not bring anything before me except what is right.

7. I need around me only those who understand that they will enter their graves with nothing and are truly determined to bring about the needed change in this country.

8.Thank you so much for avoiding me.

9. While thanking Allah for this appointment I pray it does not become a reason for my disgrace and humiliation in this world and the hereafter.

Business / Inq. Digital Demonstrates Commitment To Empowering Girls In Digital Skills by TheRareGem1(f): 9:24am On May 17, 2023
inq. digital demonstrates commitment to empowering girls in digital skills acquisition

inq. Digital Nigeria Limited, a leading Cloud and Digital solutions provider specialising in Edge AI and IoT, Fabric for Cloud Connectivity and Data Center Connectivity, SDN/NFV solutions for Edge Cloud, Secure Access Services Edge, and Elastic Edge in Nigeria, reaffirmed its dedication to promoting gender equality in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.
The company called for support to empower girls, enabling them to assume their rightful place in the global ICT ecosystem and contribute to technological advancement.

This call to action was made during the celebration of the 12th edition of International Girls in ICT Day, an initiative organized by eBusiness Life Magazine and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The event, held at the prestigious Oriental Hotel, centered around the theme “Digital Skills For Life.”

Mr. Valentine Chime, the Managing Director of inq. Digital Nigeria, emphasized the importance of fostering partnerships that encourage the acquisition and development of digital skills among youths. He stressed the need to bridge the gender divide, which may widen if the girl-child is not adequately drawn into the realm of information and communications technology (ICT).

According to Mr. Chime, “the girl-child must be equipped with digital skills to thrive in the future, as only those who are ICT proficient will succeed. Empowering a girl-child means empowering a nation.”

Convener, Girls in ICT Day and Publisher, eBusiness Life magazine, Ufuoma Emuophedaro; Director of Research & Development, Nigerian Communication Commission, Ismail Adedigba; Senior Account Manager, inq. Digital Limited, Efunsola Osiyoye and Head HNi, Enterprise Business Group, Globacom, Adeboye Adeniji at the International Girls in ICT Day event held in Lagos

He also underscored the significance of investing in early ICT education, promoting the hiring of women in STEM fields, and challenging socio-cultural beliefs that hinder women’s participation in STEM.

Ufuoma Emuophedaro, the convener of the forum and Publisher of eBusiness Life Magazine, highlighted that the global event provides a platform to address the gender digital divide, devise solutions, and foster partnerships that accelerate girls’ involvement in ICT. Closing the gender gap in the ICT sector ultimately contributes to the country’s GDP.

She expressed gratitude to inq. Digital for its continuous support of the Girls in ICT initiative and commended the company’s mentorship program, which offers girls firsthand experience in the ICT industry.

inq. Digital Limited remains committed to investing in early ICT education, particularly for the girl-child, as an integral part of its partnership and support for this worthy initiative, concluded Mr. Chime.

As part of the International Girls in ICT Day commemoration, Clemmy High School, Agodo Egbe emerged as the winner of the quiz competition, while Breakthrough Academy Akute, Ogun State claimed first place in the TikTok video competition among participating schools.

Politics / FACT CHECK: Buhari, Osinbajo Never Received N651.2m Hardship Allowance by TheRareGem1(f): 10:53pm On May 12, 2023
On Friday, May 12, some news blogs published a report that claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo received N651.2 million in hardship allowances.
Findings by Chronicle NG reveals that the hardship allowance does not exist in the breakdown of the earnings of the president and vice-president.

Checks revealed that the annual remuneration of the President and his deputy as indicated by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) is around N1,750,000 and N1,500,000 monthly.

The duo have been earning 50 per cent of their salaries since they assumed office in 2015. A breakdown of their monthly earnings shows that the monthly salary for the President has been N850,000, while that of the Vice President has been earning N750,000.

The President and the Vice President have not been enjoying a jumbo financial packages that runs into millions of naira as hardship allowance in the last eight years.

Citing a document obtained from the website of the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission (RMAFC), the reports claimed that “President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo may have enjoyed about N651.2 million hardship allowance in the last eight years of the Buhari regime.”

“The RMAFC document disclosed that the President is entitled to N1.76m annually as a hardship allowance. This means that within a period of eight years, Buhari would have earned N14.08m as hardship allowance.

“The Vice President is entitled to N1.52m annually, which means that in eight years, Osinbajo would have earned N12.16m as hardship allowance.”

But against the unverified claims, it is stating the obvious that already the President and the Vice President are earning 50 per cent of their salaries, they are not earning 100 per cent. Both Nigerian leaders chose to be paid half of their salaries since the inception of the administration, an act commended by many as unprecedented by any public office holder. So, their hardship allowance could not have accumulated to the amount quoted in the report.

However, statutorily, the hardship allowances and other several benefits are contained in the Remuneration Package put together by the RMAFC under previous governments. It was, not initiated under the Buhari government and such allowances were never paid to them.

Even though these allowances are without prejudice, they are constitutional entitlements as public office holders. For having held the offices of President and Vice President, both leaders have some statutorily constitutional entitlements and perks. It is their constitutional right to be paid such allowances after serving their fatherland.

Meanwhile, as approved by RMAFC, though political office holders are entitled to 300 per cent of their annual salary as a severance package, it is, however, uncertain whether Buhari and Osinbajo would continue with the trends as they prepare to leave the office for incoming government come May 29.
