Politics / Saraki, Dogara Issue Joint Statement On National Assembly Invasion by TheTrueSeeker: 4:44pm On Aug 07, 2018
Following the on-going invasion of the National Assembly complex by men of the Department of State Services (DSS) in which legislators and members of staff, including the Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Mohammed Sani Omolori, who is the administrative head of the Federal legislature, were harassed and prevented from accessing their offices, Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki and Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara have condemned the action of the security agents and described it as another attempt to subevert the nation’s democracy.

In a statement jointly signed by the two presiding officers of both Chambers of the National Assembly, Saraki and Dogara stated that the heavy presence of armed security men who unnecessarily militarized the legislative complex and harassed legislators and the workers in the complex could not be justified in a democracy.

The Senate President and Speaker further noted that today was a sad day for democracy as very early in the morning, they got reports backed by video and pictures, from members of staff of the National Assembly, their colleagues from both chambers and other individuals, about the heavy presence of the security personnel who insisted that nobody would enter the complex except certain Senators who were to be conveyed into the complex in a Coaster bus.

“By 6.30 am, the reports started coming in and by 7am, there were pictures and video online showing armed security men preventing Senators and Honourable members from coming into the Complex. Some of our colleagues then mobilized other members in both chambers from their respective abode so that they could pressurize the Security men from allowing them to gain entry.

“Obviously, the public outcry from Nigerians and members of the international community against this illegality, this desecration of the sanctity of the legislature and this flagrant abuse of powers forced the government to relax the directives given to the security men as they later allowed the legislators to walk from the main gate into the foyer. Still the lawmakers were not allowed to drive in, in their vehicles and were denied access into the main building housing their offices.

“It is not clear what the plan of the government is but information reaching us indicated that some Senators who are pro-executive arm are being camped somewhere here in Abuja and they are being compelled to sign an impeachment notice that would later be brought to the Assembly complex. The Senate Chamber will now be forced open to enable an illegal change of leadership take place in the Senate.

“It should be noted that the Senate formally adjourned on July 24, 2018 and it stands adjourned. To reconvene, there is a process which has to be followed. Also, it should be clear that these Senators who are camped somewhere know the procedure for changing the leadership of the Senate. Both the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Presidency officials masterminding this illegality know that they do not have the numbers to lawfully carry out this action.

“Therefore, we call on members of the international community to view this development as a coup against democracy. This is a throw-back to the inglorious days of military rule where dissent is not tolerated and freedom of association and other fundamental human rights are willfully and carelessly violated.

“We urge Nigerians and the international community to condemn this illegal invasion of the National Assembly complex and the attempt to asphyxiate the legislature as undemocratic, uncivilized and irresponsible.

“Let us use this opportunity to thank our colleagues in the Senate and House of Representatives who immediately mobilized to resist this coup against democracy. Their action will be recorded as one taken at a time when the soul of this country is being imperilled. They have acted to avert the breakdown of constitutionalism and collapse of the rule of law. They have stood up to dictatorship and demonstrated that this country belongs to all of us.

“We also thank members of the press, local and international, and all Nigerians whose support for the cause of democracy have sustained us this far.

Following this unpleasant development, the joint leadership meeting slated for this afternoon has been postponed till further notice because under the prevailing circumstances, we cannot guarantee the safety of the 20 members from both chambers expected at the meeting”, Saraki and Dogara stated.

Signed

1. Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, CON, President of the Senate

2. Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, Speaker, House of Representatives

.
Politics / INEC Boss Asks Appeal Court To Quash Arrest Order Against Him. by TheTrueSeeker: 4:22pm On Aug 02, 2018
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, has asked the Court of Appeal to quash the arrest order issued against him.

He made the request in an appeal filed on Thursday in Abuja, through his lead counsel and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Adegboyega Awomolo.

Justice Stephen Pam of the Federal High Court in the nation’s capital had issued the warrant of arrest against Professor Yakubu on Wednesday for allegedly disobeying court orders.

In the notice of appeal, the INEC Chairman, however, claimed that Justice Pam acted in bad faith in the issuance of the arrest order.

He explained that he had already filed a pending appeal against the order while the attention of the judge was drawn to the appeal.

Yakubu submitted among other claims that up till date, no order was enrolled and served on him for his personal appearance in court as required by the law.

He noted that the warrant of arrest against him was a nullity because none of the parties in the contempt case applied for issuance of a bench warrant, except the judge who reportedly did so on his own.

The INEC boss stressed that he has not disobeyed any court order since he was not present before the court when the alleged order directing his personal presence was made.

He added that Justice Pam who has no jurisdiction to punish him for the alleged disobedience of court order committed ex-facie curie (outside the court).

Professor Yakubu said he was no longer a contemnor at the Federal High Court under the strength of his appeal lodged at the Court of Appeal challenging the justification of the contempt charge against him.

He argued that the trial court breached Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution by striking out his motion without hearing it, thereby denying him his right to fair hearing in the determination on the merit of his application.

Justice Pam issued a bench warrant against the INEC boss on Wednesday, following his alleged failure to appear before the court on three occasions to defend himself in the contempt charge brought against him by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State.

Politics / Nobody Should Be Crucified For Leaving A Party - Prof. Wole Soyinka by TheTrueSeeker: 2:02pm On Aug 02, 2018
Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, says he does not believe anyone who decides to leave a party should be crucified for making such decision.

He said this on Thursday in Lagos at the presentation of his new book ‘Who Is Watching The Watchmen?’.

Professor Soyinka, however, criticised the ill intentions of some politicians as their reasons for dumping one political party for another.

He faulted some of the events that played out in Benue State recently, especially the reactions that trailed the defection of Governor Samuel Ortom.

Similarly, the Nobel Laureate engaged in an interactive session on the subjects raised in the book.

One of the issues he spoke about was what he referred to as ‘the mal-administration’ in one of the previous governments.

Soyinka noted that the administration was a part of the sabotage which led to the failure of electricity in Nigeria at that time.

The interactive session also had in attendance human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr Femi Falana, as well as a renowned journalist, Mr Kunle Ajibade, among others.

Politics / SERAP Writes NYSC DG, Demands Information On Adeosun by TheTrueSeeker: 1:00pm On Aug 02, 2018
An anti-corruption group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, says it has sent a Freedom of Information request to the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig. Gen.Sule Kazaure, on the status of the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun.

The group said it wants Kazaure to, within seven days, use his good offices to provide it “information and documents on whether or not Mrs Adeosun applied for NYSC Exemption Certificate, and if she did, to clarify whether the NYSC actually granted her the Exemption Certificate, the circumstances and the provisions of the NYSC Act under which the Exemption Certificate was granted.”

The request by SERAP came on the heels of media allegation that Adeosun forged an NYSC Exemption Certificate to secure her current job and previous one in Nigeria.

SERAP, in a statement on Thursday, by its Deputy Director, Timothy Adewale, said Adeosun deserved to be given the benefit of the doubt, while awaiting the official reply of the NYSC.

The group said the information it requested from the NYSC DG was important to it, as it would enable it to either compel the Attorney General of the Federation to file criminal charges against Adeosun or consider private prosecution if the forgery allegation was true.

“By providing information and documents on the Exemption Certificate, the NYSC would help to put an end to any insinuation of complicity and show that the institution can embrace transparency and accountability in the discharge of its statutory mandates. This would in turn contribute to improved integrity and public image of the NYSC.

“Mrs Adeosun remains innocent until the allegations against her are properly tested and proven beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of competent jurisdiction, based on relevant admissible evidence. But the continuing silence by the NYSC management on the matter may create an impression that an offence may have been committed, and lead to the accusation that the management has something to hide.

“We urge you (Kazaure) and the entire NYSC management and leadership to open up on the matter and provide information and documents as requested. This will be one step in the right direction.

“If the information is not provided to us within seven days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter, the Registered Trustees of SERAP shall take all appropriate legal actions under the Freedom of Information Act to compel you to comply with our request.

“SERAP is concerned about the perceived lack of transparency and accountability of the NYSC management and leadership in this matter, which has seriously undermined public trust and confidence in the NYSC as a public institution established to serve the public interests.”

Politics / 'Mother Of All Decampee' Coming Soon...!!! This Is The End Of APC by TheTrueSeeker: 10:23am On Aug 02, 2018
This is how the Political Party 'APC' will be put on the extinct list in the history of Nigeria.

Its called the 'Mother of all Decampee'

At the 11th hour, one of the Political Parties that merged to form the APC will write to INEC requesting to be delisted, un-bundled or un-merged from the merger that formed the Political entity called the All Progressive Congress (APC).

While INEC will be scratching its head telling the parties of its inability to un-merge, a suit will be instituted in Court to determine if a party can un-merge.

The Court will agree with them that a party can un-merge if all parties are in mutual agreement. By this time, APC will be in disarray ...!!

To be continued...!!!
