"A Philippine maid, Mary Jane Veloso, got a last-minute reprieve last year in response to a request from Manila after an employment recruiter, whom Veloso had accused of planting drugs in her luggage, gave herself up to police in the Philippines."

So nations are allowed to arrange "arrest" of a citizen in one of the convict's home nation to set the convicts free right? Probably true right?

God bless you my brother. You must be very highly knowledgeable and someone that reads in-between the lines. I have exactly the same opinion,
even though I am not an anti-APC person.

Fashola was totally clueless and very corrupt! Unfortunately, we are in a society where mediocrity is promoted and worshipped.
It baffles me how some people could be so blind to eulogize a governor that destroyed LASU, messed up the health sector, oppressed the poor with obnoxious laws, used every project as opportunity to extort money from the populace e.g. Lekki toll gate, Ikoyi bridge. A governor that used over N70million of govt. funds to build a PERSONAL website and another N70million to build ordinary borehole. The same man said he used over N7billion to RENOVATE an EXISITING 7 kilometer road (Western Avenue, Surulere), thereby making it an everage of 1billion per kilometer as far back as 2006-07! That is the most expensive road in Nigeria!
Fashola was a thief par excellence!

I just hope Ambode would not fall into the same trap!
That is the most expensive road in the WORLD please. Fashola was a THIEF!

oh Please!!! Fashola did absolutely nothing. A juxtaposition of the state's debt profile against the development in the state makes Fashola's whole tenure some sort of comic relief from the informed perspective.

I'm very objective here, just go to some place in Lagos called Lakowe and see how this crook and rogue called Fashola has mortgaged Lagos to himself, Jagaban and few friends. Land reclaimation project achieved with Lagos state funds for the private economic growth of selected few!

Ambode is a far better governor than that elitist and obnoxious pretender called Fashola. The latter used his eloquence and excessive hype to confuse millions of gullible idiots. Discerning people like me saw through the noise, and I detested everything about him. I still do.

Even as an eminently anti-APC political observer, I saw from the earliest days of Ambode's gubernatorial reign that he showed signs of a creative/humanist/pragmatic approach to governance that I could not argue against.
Same here- I detest every damn thing about that Media-Candy obsessed Fashola. He was a ROGUE! Don't know about now.

As for Amode, I never liked the circumstance surrounding his emergence but DAMNnnnnnnnn the man has won me over with his achievement and his call to duty approach. The Indian Site supervisor who wanted to cover for him was also deported by my MIGHT! I took them to the Area Command's office at Ikeja. Begged momsy at the immigration office to help fast track their deportation within 72 hours.

No court trial or any bombastic police report and all. Immigration did their "job". That was bad, Yes. I don't regret that action till date. So quit talking about "all Indians are bosses". That's crappy crap!
PropertiesRe: VERY IMPORTANT: Mistakes Architects Make And Should Be Avoided by thewatcher2020: 8:13am On Apr 16, 2016
Funny how Builders cum Engineers are quick to throw Architects under the bus. As a matter of Principle, Every building I designed back in Nigeria, I inform the clients upfront that I NOMINATE the engineer(s) for all my design and construction works. This is simple because so many Engineers out there are so damnnnnn LAZY! Gosh!

I once designed the private residence of a SS governor back in 2009. During construction, his brother- an Engineer came around and started screaming "What kind of rubbish design is this, you people want to kill somebody". I received a call from Lagos that this buffoon has instructed the people on ground to "knack columns and drop beams everywhere" for safety reasons. The Governor wanted a big hall where he could host VIPs regularly within his mansion. I as an Architect, I HATE COLUMNS OBSTRUCTING VIEWS INSIDE LIVING SPACE- its actually my pet peeve. So, I flew in and sent a message to the Client- the Governor that his comic brother should be taken off my site if my competency is still being valued with respect to the project. He called back and I explained everything to him. I went to the site the following day, the man started telling me how he has been practicing Engineering before I ventured into Architectural school and all bullshit.

To cut the story short, the building is still standing very firm today all post-construction stability tests conducted not only certified the building excellent but got recommendations. I shouldn't be teaching Engineers their jobs, we simply used inverted beams in most locations to hide the ugly proposed drop-beams which I believe to be an elementary solution that should be on the fingertips of "mr experience".

The underlying truth here is- Most engineers in Nigeria are comfortable with the default matchbox designs with columns and beams everywhere hence the complaints against Architects for their self-imposed mental deficiency.

PEACE!

Why don't you simply hop on a plane and return back to Nigeria? Assuming all you said was true. The problem with Africans who think like you is they suffer from some kind of complex. Are you the only African in America? Did you suffer as much as the African American who went through 400 years(not sure) of slavery? Yet most don't nag like you and many other Africans there succeed and boost the Nigerian economy immensely, yes! The same Nigeria that gave them nothing to begin with.
1. Why don't you simply hop on a plane and return back to Nigeria?
I was working in Nigeria before leaving. The money I spent on diesel alone was so damn crazy because when it comes to "Light" I don't joke with it. Hence, part of the reason I can't hop on the next plane- Economic reason. My monthly earnings was no longer funding my power needs. Why work from 9-5 everyday and ask my ab.oki to "off" Gen by 12 and I'd sleep inside heat? Hence the reason for leaving Nigeria to a better location- Temporarily.
I advice anyone, if you can get out of the country please do, but don't come here and be washing plates after leaving a banking job behind in Nigeria.

2. The problem with Africans who think like you is they suffer from some kind of complex.
Complex? No. It isn't. I tell you something, If you make a lot of money and you stop looking forward to the next day, trust me You are not living. Forget it, I've got friends, fellow professionals, people of diverse ethnic background. My close pal, a Spaniard once told me "I just wanna get out of this place once Catalunya becomes fully official! Do you understand where i'm coming from? This is a white guy! He doesn't feel as being a part of this society. it isn't complex. Trust me. I TRAVEL a lot. A Nigerian friend once said "All these money you spend travelling and all why not..." I hushed him. I travel just to clear my head regularly.

3. Are you the only African in America? Did you suffer as much as the African American who went through 400 years(not sure) of slavery? Yet most don't nag like you.

Lol. I speak for myself ONLY. I can't hold brief for others. These people are very nice- strictly business. I'd leave you with an excerpt from The movie- The Last Don.

"The Don: I Love America.

Girgio (The Don's first son) : Pop, I Love America too- Strictly for business!"

Did anyone ask Giorgio to relocate to Sicilly, his ancestral home? No. So people migrate for different reasons. I am free to express my opinion on whatever experience I must have received in various countries.

Wow, your post made me retrospect about the poignant experience of being black in white land.

You know, its psychologically comforting to walk into a classroom, enter a bus, a shopping mall or any public places without the burden of being the odd one. Living in a foreign society, you carry the baggage of fighting stereotype, proving yourself, thinking your job refusal was due to your hue, and your rude boss treats you differently because of his hidden prejudice towards your kind.

After your brain has been exhausted by the vorfreude andrenaline rush of endorphines associated with migration, it begins to dawn on you that truly, there is no place like home. Social ostracism seems to be the norm for many immigrants, and it seems like there are seeds in the Afro culture that is fundamentally missing in many culture such as empathy, inclusiveness and has a morbid obsession for competition, which makes it extremely difficult to feel at home, especially in a culture with a foundational condescending view on African.

Before moving abroad, I never knew that a mundane thing as skin colour would be the determinant on how I will be perceived, treated and covertly affect direction of my economical position. Just like how I see different skin colours of people in Nigeria and never treat them differently, the opposite is true in many foreign countries. Standard of living is surely very good in the west, but its very unsatisfying for someone that is well breed in the African system communality, and you many times find yourself retrospecting about your past life at home, with all its pleasant memories.

many of the facile comments on this thread portrays inexperience of living abroad, especially if you are a conscious African. Where you are merely tolerated, so as to convince themselves and proof to the world that they ain't racist and got nothing about you. But in reality, your kind if filled within the lower hierarchy of the socio-economical ladder. Admittedly, you will find many black people in top position, but this doesn't invalidate the conventional truth, just like a broken clock is correct twice a day.

To sum it up, if material wealth and comfort is all you crave for, then surely, the west is for you. If you crave for something deep, meaningful and celestial, then relatively, its not for you. if you believe that life will be heaven after you moved abroad, then you probably will end of being a victim of the popular ''grass is greener on the other side'' maxim.

To be black and conscious in the west is to be in a constant state of rage." – James Baldwin
Apt! Though personal experiences may differ but FACT remains the same. You've nailed it.

No matter how you slice it... the black man doesn't belong to the whiteman's world. Y'all just be forcing shiit. The happiness y'all claim to have in the west is nothing but illusion. mmsen:
People all over the world are treated differently according to status/wealth - if you think that you will be treated like Oprah Winfrey when you work as a teacher then you are moronic.

The judicial system everywhere works for the benefit of those with means - to expect that you will receive the same level of justice or care as an immigrant laborer is again naive. If you genuinely believe that then I suggest that you read up on Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan - both of whom have been involved in numerous crimes, including drug offences but somehow avoided jail time.

The judicial system is loaded with prejudice and bias - class, race, status, appearance all play into what kind of judgment a defendant will receive. Judges are not robots, they're raised in the same cesspool of bigotry and prejudice as the rest of society. They are not above making judgments based on preconceived notions.

You may feel like you make 'good money' as a janitor but your quality of life will be poor because a significant percentage of your wages will be spent trying to keep the lights on and a roof over your head - I notice that many immigrants are remarkably stupid when it comes to getting excited over wages. The money you will receive in these minimum wage positions is enough to buy food and maybe just enough for a portion of your rent in the big cities - you will not be living well by any stretch of the imagination. Also, quality healthcare is never free, in most nations you will require health insurance.

And the police most certainly can and do harass private individuals. People are pulled over for driving while black, at will. That's not just in America, it happens in Switzerland and other parts of Europe. And if you live in a horrible part of town then your interactions with the police will increase in frequency.

It's clear that many of you possess a completely unrealistic, romanticized vision of foreign nations and have no clue what it takes to build a nation to be proud of hence the obsession with acquiring visas to unknown climes - countries with their own internal problems, prejudices and cultural nuances of which most of you are ignorant. The worst of you are the characters who decide that your life in your home country is so awful that it's better to overstay on your tourist or student visa than to return home and strive to improve your life and add to your nation's well-being.
God bless you for this post. so many of them don't even paint the picture as it is. Let's be clear on this- THE WHITE MAN DOESN'T RESPECT YOU, HE is JUST BEING TOLERANT OF YOUR PRESENCE IN HIS COUNTRY. No matter the smiles and facial expression of happiness, those people gonna forever see you as a semi-human. Most people just sit down there and talk about quality of life in here. I laugh. Your psychological well being isn't distorted when a sales attendant follows you about inside the shop? Even when you know you've got more money to buy stuffs inside more than the regular white guy inside? When police pulls you over for no damnnn reason, just to ask you for your ID? Look, I'd say it here and forever, Until when an African from Nigeria sees Kenya, Senegal, Mali, Burkinafaso and the rest countries as the destination "abroad" and same for African countries, we shall forever remain 2ndclass citizens. Keep living in denial, the rest of you. I make money here but every fucc.cking day, I feel like I don't belong here. I wake up and wanna get through the day as fast as possible. Painful thing some fucking guys would quit banking jobs in nigeria to become dish washers for these skinheads here!

I'm not concerned about the fired shot or whatever. When I read stories like this, I read the part that would bear some meaning to my existence. The part in this case I refer to is the age of the Foreign affairs minister- 44. I look back at my country Nigeria and think how do I aspire to such a position in 17 years time if some Principal actors of Nigeria's Independence are still calling the shots 50 years later? This is ridiculously sad. I pray the situation in coming years improves. If not, it wouldn't be well with that country when i come with my cleansing mission come 2028. The coalition would be so strong, all youths MUST align to reclaim the nation and restore sanity.

No matter your level of achievement in this white man's country, You'd forever remain a second class citizen at best! Why not go back to your country and live like humans with the right set of leadership that would embrace all aspirations? Do you think if Nigeria was just "half" the level of South Africa in terms of advancement, ME, ME? ? ? You should endeavor to ALWAYS proofread and spellcheck before you click ENTER on any post of yours where your final C.G.P.A. must be quoted. This is simply because, you are under more scrutiny than the average Joe out there on the street.

That said, Good luck in your search for something worthy of doing in this idle period. It could be so damn challenging bro. I never experienced it because of the course I studied back in the University- Architecture. I started working from 200 Level to be honest. This waiting period experienced by some people would even make them downgrade their worth just to get something doing. You know what I want to advice you? Approach everyday as a new day! Wake up in the morning, earlier than those with jobs, get dressed and hop into the streets- your "street" not the hip hop street but the Job street. Go to Construction sites, ask to see the Site managers. Trust me, they'd be willing to speak to their Project Managers on your behalf in no time. I Know this because I was once a Site manager before I jetted out. Visit at least 3 construction sites daily and within two weeks the magic response shall beckon and you'd be PAID at least transportation allowance of N40,000 monthly.

Success bro. *Cheers.

Nonsense! Nothing portrays discrimination in the whole of this bombastic composition.

I have the privilege of having flown Etihad Airways countless times, the Nigerian operation of the Airline at MMIA is the worst thing i face on my itineraries. The workers there in Nigeria are the worst set of humans you wouldn't wish to encounter in your dreams. They are vultures! When you get to Abu Dhabi to connect your flight to wherever, you begin to wonder if it's the same Airline due to the high degree of respect and courtesy accorded you overseas by the same Airline with workers of different Nationality other than Nigeria.

That said, the Nigerian crew on Virgin Airways are very notorious in smuggling drugs for passengers due to greed for this rubb.ish quick money syndrome the nation has been plagued with over the years hence need to cut off those negative elements from the reputable organization lest it loses credibility- internationally. Once again, let it be known that this can't lead to any Diplomatic row whatsoever, so those of you affected, go and look for something else to do with your lives. What if the Company became insolvent? you would have forced it out of insolvency state because you are Nigerians? Please take a hike sluggards. PS- I still hate Nigerian crew and staff at Airports. Animals, always ready to fight with customers at the least provocation, now they've been laid off they want to whip sentiments from the media.

No ethnic card would fly here peeps, get yourself another job and remember to treat people right hence you would be in the labour market every 3 months after every new job. The airline said it already "Poor Customer feedback necessitated the downsizing". The Airline respects her customers so much unlike you the Nigerian crew and staff so please shut your keyboards and keep your gutter trap mouths shut perpetually on this case. Customers pay money for services, they deserve respects from service providers irrespective of the situation. Go to saner climes and see how customers are treated even under a disrespectful or tensed atmosphere, Customer service providers maintain dignifying composure.

3. Racism

Lol. Being a black man or woman is tough in this world. Oyibo that bathes twice or three times a week to save water, will hold their nose when they see you. Some people will openly refuse to serve you, some will refuse to even answer you or give you a job.

Racism is everywhere, the level of racism depends on the country i.e are you in a country as hard as Poland or in one where they have a lot of people of different races such as the United States? If you live in a city with people from different countries, it tends to be much less.

Its not all bad, some people will actually like you for being black others will detest you. The point is you don’t know who is going to hiss at you in the morning or smile, which can be depressing.

Also the poorer you are and the poorer the society you live in, the more racism you are likely to suffer. Rich people are welcome anywhere. A rich black man will think he is the most loved person in the world in some of these places but still some people will not care and look at you like you were coated in dawadawa and smell of the substance. You need a strong mind for this one.

4. Loneliness

In Nigeria, its never hard to make friends. Even with Iya that owns the provision store near your house, where you can sit down and discuss everything from the thieves that are stealing Nigeria’s money to that single woman in your compound who is always entertaining men with different cars at all hours of the day.

In Obodo Oyibo, nobody has time to sit around and discuss. Your neighbour will see you in the morning and walk past without saying hello. The person smiling for you in the store is only trying to separate you from your money. You cannot call people to gist with them on the phone and spend one or two hours. Calling Nigeria however might be easier because of Internet calls, however when you have to work for food you have little time to socialize.

Over time you might learn to make friends with co-workers, other Nigerians and other people, but it will take a lot of time. People you spend time gisting with today might not even acknowledge you tomorrow. That is the way it is.
If you think the O.P. aint right on these issues quoted above, its either you have never LIVED (not visited) in a foreign country dominated by the white folks or you have grown a damn too tough skin to cushion against such weighty (from a sensitive perspective) issues such as racism and loneliness.

Life is not all about the money people. I swear, I understood this when I moved into this country some months ago. What I earn now is over $16,000/month. When you compare that to what i was earning in Nigeria with the fact that I had more responsibilities with litttle resources back there, you would know that right here- There is MONEY!

Back to the issue of Loneliness... It is so damn true. I bought my favorite car last week here, a Mercedes S500 just to make myself happy and take my mind away from this lonely state of mind, yeah its that bad. For me, the major escape route out of situations I cant control is just to peep into my bank account and spend, spend, spend till the account is feeling threatened! You are gonna die of isolation in here trust me if you are the type who once led a bubbly social life back in Nigeria. You get ignored by someone you had a 2 hour lively conversations with some nights ago and you'd just stand there and be thinking "Did he/she see me and walked past like that, or she isn't the same person?" features like this occur daily here.

Some of you would say "hey, go out and make friends". LOL. Do you know Racism is still very much alive in the west, but they are just concealing it? They practice what i would call Institutionalized racism mehnnn. it is a practice where the white folks look at you and smile back at you and willing to assist you with whatever BUT not willing to take it beyond that. I met some Nigerians here who's been living here for over 8 years yet they dont even have a LIFE! They'd pretend all is well -Socially but hey, they aint happy people. They are lonely. Many of them got good jobs and the ones with wives and kids cant really take their wives and kids to visit "friends" on sundays except of course the "friend" is a Nigerian and not a burden to them.

It wasn't with my clear eyes I resuscitated my friendship with some of my exes back in Nigeria. For no damn reason, I sent two IPhone 6S to different girls that I once dated back in Nigeria- one married, the other unmarried. Why? They were damn too good to me, I never appreciated those girls enough while we dated back then and coming here I realized how precious those girls were to me that sometimes I just wanna quit this place and head back home and Live Normal again but peeps be telling me "e go better". With money, these folks here would give you some level of FORCED respect but asides that you are not better off than the Imaginary monkeys in their heads.

I have got game people. Dont worry about all my rants above, I have got 3 white chics helping me ease tensions when necessary but let me tell you, the one i love so much, the Dad doesnt even talk to blacks. You can see where I'm coming from. We just bang, shop, club, surf, go to beach and have all that fun once work is pretty much less and leisure time is available but hey that feeling of emptiness creeps in every once in a while.

So it isn't about the money and all. But mortgage life sweet small sha. I just bought a duplex here and my monthly payment is being partially serviced by rents i receive from about 3 flats I bought some months immediately I landed my job- Na calculations here and there ooo people, I never knew I would be making financial decisions like this but thanks to the efficient system we've got in place here, You can plan your life better here than there in Nigeria. Isolation/Loneliness and Racism remains the bane of an African in this society. Even the lowest of the Low whites thinks he is better than you coz you are black.

Don't ever feel intimidated here. Got here with my self esteem still intact and I wouldn't trade that for anything. Some online merchants debited my account wrongly when i came in, i tried requesting for rectification but they were acting all bossy and shit. I didnt even bother wasting time, I just got a Lawyer, paid him about $4,750 for his services- asked him to file court papers and serve the airheads. They came begging the following week giving me my full refund of the fraudulent debit of $275 yeah... I sued for that amount when i felt these guys were treating me like this coz they were accustomed to treating Africans like that and hey they gave me my full cost of money $4,750 spent on the Legal services as part of the terms of settlement. My Lawyer a white guy was so surprised that a black man would go this length to seek redress hence he tried discouraging me with such high fee of $4,750 to fight for $275! I was even given a free gift card of $1000 afterwards.

That is just my experience so far in obodo Oyibo.

The O.P. is right on quite a number of points raised. I'd support the O.P. when I'm done with this Architectural Design I'm doing together with other tasks I'm running at the moment. Just so I let y'all know, I never knew how empty one could be even with reasonable amount of dollars you've got while here in this ultra advanced world. O.P., I'd buttress so many points raised by you soon.
