furrr: Correct again my brother That's why I said that they will continue to teach English language in schools but not as a language of instruction rather, just as a language ie how hausa, igbo, yoruba are taught in schools ......
The truth is you can't discount the importance of English language but at the same time you shouldn't neglect your language just because English is more widely spoken and accepted
Numerous studies have shown that people that are taught in school using their native language understand what they are taught better
That's why most technologically advanced countries in the world teach students using their native languages, e.g Russia, Germany, Japan, UK, France, china etc
But that's not say there is no plus in being bilingual
For example now there are so many things in igbo land and so many expressions in igbo language that you simply can't translate into English
And like I said English is very important but it's importance like any language in the world is greatly diminished when it starts becoming a replacement to you mother tongue........
The lack of educational materials in hausa or any other language is the fault of the hausa academics and government for not trying to translate their research findings into their various native languages......
Government have played a significant role in making our languages redundant and useless by not giving awards and encouraging people that write books on science, history, economics etc in our various native languages..... it's almost a shame to say that most of our literary gurus write only in English and not in their respective native languages the least they can do is to translate those masterpieces to their language thereby adding more strength and vocabulary to their languages......
And the worst is seeing a hausa, yoruba or igbo man speaking to their fellow tribes men in English when they both can speak and understand their native languages hardly will you see a Korean speaking English to his fellow Koreans even though he/she can speak english
And BTW I am a hausa boy from kano did all my schooling here in kano but atleast I can write and speak English though not as fluent as hausa but I try my best....... I am telling you this to show you we are catching up in the education arena too
And I applaud you for being able to read and write in your native language cos most people cant U re absolutely right. #Cheers |

HAH: Am impressed, this is what you get from the knowledgeable person, clearly Buhari has the charisma and love of th people because of his anticorruption stand, but sadly he lacks the capacity to lead, this is a fact as evidenced by recent civil war among his kitchen cabinet members.
All the things elrufai said are true and if implemented we will get out of our doldrums but honestly Buhari cannot do it as I doubt if he even understands some of the things elrufai emphasised on . Imagine this letter was written to Buhari since September last year but 7 months after nothing has been done, this tells you Buhari lacks the intellectual capacity to take us to promise land.
Buharis anti corruption stance is very commendable but that is only one of many things needed to prosper
By the way I was a Buharist but am very disappointed. Kudos Nasir El-Rufai the fact remains that Buhari z just popular but not smart literally. |

Politics › Re: Why Do Hausas Are The Most Hated Tribe In Nigeria??? by ThinkSmarter: 9:27am On Mar 17, 2017 |
furrr: Thank you my brother for your understanding
The hausa issue though..... like I said prior to the coming of western education and English in general hausa was used in everything from education, religion, governance, commerce, trade etc etc this led to the wide acceptance of hausa among northern minorities to the extent hausa is used in church services across northern nigeria (hence hausa becoming lingua franca of the north) and eventually when the colonials came the north was subjected to indirect rule i.e they the British where not in direct contact with the people.... they used translators to communicate with the kings and the kings communicate to thier people using which language? You guessed it "hausa" And as such not much emphasis was paid to learning English among the people as they was no need for it......
And as you know old habit die hard....
Eventually when the British left, thesame principle continue as the northern region government use English language only on national issues and use hausa to communicate with their hausa speaking people after all what's the use of language? To communicate.... so since they can communicate freely with their people using hausa what do they need English for...
This led to the use of hausa language as language of instruction in elementary schools and they teach English only as a language
Then came unity and the abrogation of regionalism and creation of states which led to greater emphasis on learning the English language as the hausas now have to communicate with their brothers in the south of the country that may or may not be able to speak hausa language
So as you can see the whole English thing is relatively (relative to the south) new to the hausa masses... and as of 30 - 40 years back english was a thing of the governing class
And what's interesting is that even today as we speak there is a greater call to revert to the old ways ie to start using hausa language as a language of instruction in schools and teach English language only as a language... For example in kano, katsina, jigawa etc even today the governor use hausa to talk to his people..... the state house of reps conduct their proceedings in hausa infact out of more than 15 radio stations in kano only two use English throughout, professor of English language will prefer to speak hausa to his hausa speaking colleagues etc etc
The argument of the proponents of the above mentioned idea was if that's the case and the people understand better and prefer use their language "hausa" to communicate with each other and speak the little English they can only when the have to why should we force people to speak English language
Second argument is there are smaller countries in Europe and else where with smaller population to the hausas that use their language and communicate perfectly with other countries so why should we force our selves to speak a foreign language
Third argument is if other countries of the world recognise hausa language spread and wide acceptance to the extent of offering media services e.g bbc hausa, France rtif, china radio, Iran, Saudi Arabia, VOA hausa etc why should we the owners of the language neglect our language and embrace foreign languages
That's the dilemma my brother hope you can find the time to weigh in and contribute to the debate Yes, I do understand. I so much applaud the Hausas for being able to preserve their language, unlike other tribes in Nigeria, including mine that is letting our language to die. But in a case were English language hv been adapted as a lingua franca for writing Exams and governance in Nigeria, there is a need for us to learn how to communicate and write effectively with it. I do read and write with my own tribal language[ Igbo] and even in my dialect of Igbo language. We hv the central Igbo [Igbo Izugbe ] and many dialects [igboid languages ] . In our local Church, we read the Bible in English, Central Igbo and in my native Igbo dialects. Likewise the Yorubas and many other Nigerian tribes. Like you for instance, u re able to communicate with me cuz u do understand English language. Your Understanding of English language will give u a comparative advantage over someone that only understand native language, it's obvious. That's what I am trying to encourage, that you embraced ur native language shouldn't prevent u from learning, writing and communicating in English. Like in India and Korea their official languages re Hindu and Korean respectively, still higher percentage of them do understand English language, read and write it effectively. Most internet information re written in the World major languages, so u see need to understand any of the world major languages. I'm not good in English language, but at least I can communicate with it. Which is the essence. |

furrr: Thanks for your reply With regards to education I will say the hausas are trying not to say that we are where we are.... but the true measure of progress is to look at where someone is in the past and where that person is today....... just a few years after independence they where only 84 secondary schools (most of which are concentrated in the NC) in the entire northern region while down south they are hundreds of schools........ this has to do with history.... when the colonials came they met a large chunk of the north having an established system of education based on islam an established system of government and an established religion as such they knew that trying to build schools in the north (most of the schools are missionary schools) will be seen by the northerners as an attack to their religion and their way of life....... And rightly so..... because prior to the colonials they are only two religions in nigeria Islam in the majority of the north and a small part of SW and traditional religion for the rest of the country today Islam and Christianity are almost evenly divided
What I am saying in a nutshell is that the north is making progress in education however slow it may be.... during independence we have only one person with a bsc in the entire northern region and today there are professors, Dr's you name it and schools are filled to capacity and even to over capacity.....
I am a living testament to this fact because I have a bsc in accounting, msc in taxation and treasury management, and a member of ICAN and all this I achieve attending school in kano and am still in my twenties....... just 20- 30 years ago this would have been impossible......
So instead of bashing and raining insult on us no matter what we do "good or bad" which will further animosity and hatred among us why don't you guys offer a friendly hand and provide constructive criticism instead of insults and bigotry and we will see where it goes from there...... Honestly, the North is really trying right now in times of School enrollment. I must applaud most especially their various state governments, they are really investing in education. And I believe with these measures so far, the illiteracy in the North will be reduced to the barest minimum in few years to come. But one thing that I discovered, that is wrong with their system of education is the over use of vernacular [Hausa language ] in teaching which do affects the students during internal and external exams. As what u perceived that they understood in local Lang, will be difficultly for them to communicate to the examiner in English language, which is the language, most exams are written. They resort to reading Hausa literature and writing in Hausa. And if u use English in class, the students will tag u as being weird, that is trying to deviate from the standard. In the issue of tribal and religious bashing, it's a Nigerian problem. As u can see here on Nairaland, the Hausas re always at the safer side, they only get verbally attacked when there are issues of Child marriage, terrorism which people do attribute to Islam. Though extremists or fundamentalist re all Moslems trying to interpret the Quran line by line and enforce hardcore Islamic doctrines. But of the truth is that, majority of Moslems re not extremists, they are rather moderate Muslims. But critics do generalize, which is wrong. Nairaland will give you negative impression of tribes. I guess education is the only factor that will make us to be more understanding of one another. Education will make us to be civilized and tolerant of one another. I even do get baffled at the rate of e~tribal war b/w the Igbos and Yorubas that lead to some name callings like Afonja, flattino, ipod yoot, sophisticated, brown roof rep, Ugandan Jews.. ....lol very funny. But in real life, this hatred doesn't exist. I am a Christian from South Eastern Nigeria, I live and eat together with my Moslem roommate from Kano. I hv so many Yoruba and Hausa/fulani friends, and they re good, I must confess. People that find it difficult to get along re Extremists, they are in Islam, they are in Christiandom. They re prone to discriminate and find fault in all ur actions because it doesn't correlate with their own ideologies. I no carry Religion for head. And ones religion should not determine hw I treat and relate with him/her. |

furrr: Well I agree with you for the most part especially the part where hausa see themselves as more muslim than other tribes or ethnicities ..... this might be because of the feeling that other tribes mix religion and some traditional beliefs......... this has reduced tremendously partly due to more association and co existence with other muslim from other tribes... And I believe there is certainly more room for improvement.... but what I hate and don't like on nairaland in general is generalisation
The moment something regarding hausa or the north is mentioned it's immediately taken to be terrible and bad
Imagine.... a thread on nairaland that show fayose ekiti governor distributing rice and 200 Naira .... most people (not all) immediately start praising the governor and how it's genius what he is doing
Moments letter another thread show Ganduje inspecting a multi billion Naira tiga hydro power plant and irrigation project..... immediately nairalanders including some prising fayose in the previous thread started bashing Ganduje..... saying how it's environmentally bad to build dams some went as far as saying that hausas will bomb the dam etc awful stuff you know
This occurs a lot here on nairaland where a southern governor commission a culvert and immediately he is commended but northern governor does thesame..... the insults begin to rain etc etc....
Hausas are generally hated because of preconceived notion of the north and it's people as bad..... And most at times by people who have not set foot anywhere in the north..... majority of Hausas re good people, very hospitable even more than my own tribe. But the Fulanis re the bad eggs, though not all but majority. They hv this Domineering and conquering tendency running in their blood. Hausas would hv been a very good tribe indeed if not that they goodwill hv been corrupted by hardcore Islamic teachings. The extremists or fundamentalists among them re quick to criticize and condemn u if u don't share the same ideology with them. But, majority of the pure Hausas re extroverted and hospitable. While the pure Fulanis re more introverted, isolated and always tend to be fanatics in most cases. The Fulanis re naturally wicked, they don't forgive easily when offended. One good thing with them is that they, Fulanis re always brighter academically, this doesn't mean that the Hausas re not bright. How do I know these? from their body structure. The Hausas re always taller, huger in some cases and appear to have a darker skin. While the Fulanis re thin in most cases, more of averaged height, higher tendency of having a fair skin, though some re black, with smaller pointed nose, chisel shaped jaws. I'm telling you from my experience. I'm serving in the North. |

Demmzy15: No offense, so because of conspiracy of Rebecca and God agreed to this deceit and shifted to Jacob, doesn't that sound somehow to you?
Ishmael is a son of Abraham, so by that his descendants aren't left out. Besides, I also maintained that many Palestinians are descendants of Jacob.
Many Jews today claiming Palestine are converts to Judaism, so that doesn't give them a right because they're not related by blood! Who am I to judge God. By default, both the descendants of Ishmael, Esau and Jacob suppose to be the same entity. But God said in the book of Genesis that the descendants of Ishmael will always be at loggerheads with the descendants of Isaac. Also after Jacob might hv conspired with his mother to take the blessings due to Esau, they were never in peace again. Meaning that both Ishmael, Esau and Jacob went into separate ways. With only Jacob and his descendants retained as the mainstream Isreal, cuz Jacobs other names is Isreal. And they re regarded as the main Hebrew cuz God promised to Abraham that He will fulfill his convenant with him [Abraham] through Isaac, the son of Sarah. |

But it's Jacob that was blessed by Isaac following his mother, Rebecca's conspiracy. Jacob Begot 12 sons that formed the 12 tribes of Israel. God also promised to Hagai, the mother of Ishmael that He will bless the child and make great descendants of him, that is somewhere in Genesis. |

What the Op highlighted is a bitter truth that might pain some folks cuz He is kind of trying to expose them. Many adulterous lives involving some peoples husbands, wives go~on on daily basis in various hotels, motels and joints. It's now becoming an acceptable and celebrated trends among some folks. I'm a Christian from South, but lives in the North. I so much like the way Moslems do conduct themselves, even though they are not perfect as no one is. They prefer to get married to as many wives as four than living adulterous lives. We should call a spade, a spade. What need to be condemned need to. Or are the pastors preaching wrong If we continue to say judge not, condemn not, mind your business. Our society will be in shambles. Forget civilization as some people do attribute indecent behaviour to being civilized. Civilization doesn't mean liberty to dress shabbily, perpetrate crimes and other social vices with impunity. We re abusing the grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ. I'm not trying to preach though. But, in every society there is morals, even among free thinkers and atheists. And we must not celebrate indecency or call names to someone trying to call for sober reflection. Some folks hv left their churches to the one that suits them cuz their former church seems to be pointing at their ugly lifestyles, which bitters them. I'm not surprised though, some people hv dead conscience. |

When they tried to Revolt, they were defeated and sent out in 70AD by the European Romans. The Arab States aren't as broken as those years, you saw how Egypt surprised Israel in 1973 to the extent Israel thought they had been defeated not until America sent in supplies. Without the help of America, Israel is a dead meat and know that America won't always be there. Many Parameters have really worked to their [Isreal]benefits , they might not be strong enough to confront their enemies. From their persecution in Egypt to the Holocaust in Germany and several others that happened in the ancient Roman, Ottoman, Assyrian and MedoPersian empire. But cuz, their help comes from God, He will always turn things around to their favour. Isrealites hv recorded the highest number of wars in history. If you do read the Bible, u will see historical documentation of the ways Isreal have been captured in war by Ancient Babylonians and Assyrians. They hv been, killed, maimed, captured and taken to slavery on several occasions, yet they hv bounced back stronger. Here they are! I think, no one can stop them except God wills. It's a promise from God to Abraham that He will make his descendants a great nation. I have once philosophized like you. I hv been an atheist to some extent. Yes, some of the things happening here on earth can cause you to doubt and question the existence of God at times. But, surely He do exist. Before now, He knew that man will get to the technological feats we hv these days. He is the one that embedded the minerals securely beneath the earth and gave man the wisdom to continue with the rest of the exploitation. But many things convinced me that God really do exist. God is Alive, Not Dead. I'm not as a result of Evolution, I'm designed by an intelligent Being, likewise you. Plants, Animals, Humans and the Universe are designed by the Supreme being. He is like a Mystery, u can't really comprehend him if u keep philosophising. He is Metaphysical. He is beyond Science. Even the Bible made it clear that Isreal don't have original land of their own. All the land, they are occupying is ceased land. From their exodus from Egypt, they started confronting and conquering Palestinians like Jericho and the rest of them. These all happened because God was with them. And He[God] is the one that promised them that land. The promise was made to Abraham [Ibrahim ], their great grandfather. At a time, the Jews and Arabs lived side by side. Till Isreali declared war and started conquering and ceasing lands. From the way they [Isrealis]defeated the Arab states of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon during the Isreal/Arab war, it tells much that surely God is with them.
