PoliticsSawyer Was Mad To Bring Ebola Here - Jonathan by thirty(op): 1:31pm On Aug 13, 2014
Abuja — President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, described the late American-Liberian, Patrick Sawyer's visit that heralded the entry of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, into the country, as "pure madness."

This came as the Federal Government appealed to Nigerians not to panic and adhere to the highest possible personal hygiene measures and safety guidelines issued by the Federal Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, fears that more Nigerians may fall victim of the Ebola virus heightened, yesterday, as the Federal Government confirmed the 10th case of the disease after the death of the index case (the first case), bringing the total number of cases to 10.

The President, who spoke publicly for the first time since the outbreak of the disease in the country, expressed disappointment with the way and manner the late Sawyer brought Ebola to Nigeria.

Late Sawyer, whose arrival in Lagos on July 20, 2014, and eventual death five days later in a private hospital, sparked off the dreaded Ebola Virus saga in the country, was a consultant to the Liberian government.

He was said to be under surveillance in Liberia for a suspected case of the Ebola Virus Disease, but evaded authorities in Monrovia and tragically boarded a plane for Lagos in Nigeria, via Lome in Togo and Accra in Ghana.

His intention, according to reports was to connect to Calabar in Nigeria to attend a two-day retreat organized by the ECOWAS Commission, and later the same week to Atlanta, Georgia in the USA to celebrate his daughter's birthday.

Speaking at the Annual Interfaith Conference in Abuja, President Jonathan, however, assured citizens that the Federal Government was ready to stop the spread of the Ebola virus.

Mad man and his Ebola

"It is unfortunate that one mad man brought Ebola to us, but we have to contain it. As a government, we promise that we will do everything humanly possible to contain the Ebola virus."

Further, the President hinted that the Federal Government had planned to rally the 36 state governors and their health commissioners to rescue the nation from further spread of the disease.

Continuing he said: "On Wednesday, I will meet with governors of the states, and they must come with their commissioners for health. We must make sure that every state is prepared. Where they lack, the Federal Government will support them."

He assured that his discussion with the head of the World Health Organisation, WHO, had given him more information about the virus, assuring the gathering that the virus will be stopped from causing more harm.

"My conversation with the WHO D-G, Dr Margaret Chan was revealing. She said 60 per cent of the transmission was spread during burials. That is why in my announcement; I've been saying that people should be careful about burials.

"Some people like burial ceremonies. This is not the time for burial ceremony, somebody is dead, he is dead, leave him there. This is not the best time for those ceremonies.

"If he is dead, he is already dead, Sawyer that brought this Ebola to Nigeria; his sister died of Ebola, and he started acting somehow, his country asked him not to leave the country, let them observe him, but the crazy man decided to leave and found his way here."

10 Ebola cases in Lagos

Earlier, the Federal Government confirmed another Ebola case in Lagos, bringing the total number of Ebola Virus Disease victims to 10, even as it was disclosed that the number of primary and secondary contacts of the index case placed under surveillance or isolation, had risen to 177, from 139 announced Friday last week.

Giving update of the Ebola situation in the country, Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu told a world media briefing in Abuja, that of the 10 cases, two have died (the Liberian American and the Nigerian nurse) while eight are alive and currently on treatment. "This is the situation 22 days since the dreaded EVD first landed in Nigeria," he declared.

Chukwu said all the 10 infected were people who had direct contact with late Patrick Sawyer, noting that at the sub-regional level, the Ebola Virus Disease was discussed as a substantive agenda during the Summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government on July 9, 2014 in Accra, Ghana.

US$3.5m donation to Ebola Fund

Citing efforts to stop the spread of the virus in the West African sub-region, the Minister remarked that Nigeria, as usual, played its leading, pioneering and compassionate role during the summit with the first and only donation of US$3.5 million humanitarian and capacity building aid to the three affected countries of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, the West African Health Organisation, WAHO, and the ECOWAS Ebola Fund.

The minister, who briefed the press along other ministers -- Environment, Mrs. Laurentia Mallam; Interior, Mr. Abba Moro; Special Duties, Mr. Tanimu Turaki and Information, Mr. Labaran Maku said: "Nigeria wishes to emphasise that it essentially remained an Ebola Virus-free country until this incidence of importation and unfortunate contamination. We will continue to work with all stakeholders, local and international partners to maximize on this and intensify efforts to contain and treat the existing cases."

maclatunji: There is this "rival" iftar that has kept me from attending many Nairaland Iftars in the past and true to form I confirmed last night it is holding on the same day as Nairaland's event this year again.

I have decided that I am attending the Nairaland Iftar this year but might have to leave early, say between 6-6.30pm. I just do not know how to not attend the other one. The organiser (a relative) is very close to me on a person-to-person basis and I do not have the capacity (yet) to say: "sorry, I could not come at all..." I think it does more harm than good and the other party is one I would loathe to offend.

Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place.
Why rival. kindly use another word please.

SportsWho Has Been Your Top Goalkeeper? by thirty(op):
During the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil we have been treated to some of arguable the best goalkeeping performances the tournament has ever seen.

Early on in the tournament the likes of Guillermo Ochoa took the headlines as he kept out the hosts Brazil to earn Mexico a goalless draw, while the African duo Vincent Enyeama and Rais M'Bolhi claimed many plaudits.

Keylor Navas and Tim Howard produced stunning and record-breaking displays in the knockout stages, while the likes of Julio Cesar, David Ospina, Claudio Bravo and Jesper Cillessen have all impressed. There has even been the two greatest exponents of the sweeper-keeper role in the superb Manuel Neuer and Hugo Lloris on show too.

IslamMalawi Muslims Fall In Love With Hijab by thirty(op): 6:00pm On Oct 23, 2013
Today, hijab has become a common sight in Malawi with many Muslim women proudly donning the outfit. Long treated with ridicule and scorn in the southern African country, hijab is now becoming a common sight in Malawi streets, a shift attributed to the political empowerment of the Muslim community in the predominantly Christian state.

“We have gone through a painful and dehumanizing experiencing,” Mwalone Jangiya, one of the only two Muslim women legislators in Malawi’s National Assembly, told OnIslam.net.

“Hijab was at one time a “crime” to some people, but now, we are very free to put on it.

Hijab: What’s It All About?

Malawi Muslim Nurses to Wear Hijab

Malawi Plans First Islamic University

“Even while I’m in here in parliament, I put on my hijab, without any person raising eye blows. We are now part of the society,” said Jangiya.

“Islam in Malawi has taken on a path that will never be detoured or reversed.”

Hijab, an obligatory code of dress in Islam, was rarely seen in Malawi streets before the 1990s as Muslims wearing the outfit often encountered scorn and ridicule. But today, the Muslim headscarf has become a common sight with many Muslim women proudly donning the outfit.

Walking around the streets, market places, schools, colleges and other public places, it is very easy today to recognize a Muslim woman or a girl from distance. Looking at the state of affairs, a person visiting Malawi for the first time would wrongly conclude that this has been the case all along.

“We are now free people in a free society,” Khadija Hamdan, an executive member of the Muslim Women organization in Malawi, told OnIslam.net.

“We are free to worship Allah the manner we want. We are proud Muslims.

“Today, hijab has become a symbol of liberation among Muslim women in Malawi. You can find a woman in hijab almost everywhere. You walk into an office, schools, you can easily identify a Muslim woman.”

Islam is the second largest religion in the southern African country after Christianity.

Official statistics suggest Muslims constitute 12 percent of the country’s 14 million people, but the umbrella Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) puts the rate at 36.

Empowered Muslims

Scholars cite political empowerment of Muslims for the public shift on hijab in Malawi.

“In the past, a hijab was a source of public ridicule and a recipe for embarrassment,” Sheikh Dinala Chabulika, national coordinator of the Islamic Information Bureau (IIB), told OnIslam.net.

“Women in hijab were considered very primitive and backward. This was a time our society was getting increasingly intolerant towards Islam and Muslims.

“This affected Muslim women both emotionally and physically. They were robbed of self-esteem,” he recalled.

But the political empowerment of Muslims in the past two decades has helped change the public view about the headscarf.

“For the past few years, we have been able to empower our women for them to understand that just like their Christian counterparts; they too have their own place in the Malawi society,” he said.

“We have fully empowered them to value their identity as Muslims.”

Chabulika opines that because of this level of empowerment, Muslim women can today stand up and walk tall without fear of victimization.

“They now realize their rights, and nobody can victimize them, either verbally or physically.”

The ascendancy to the presidency of Malawi’s first Muslim President, Bakili Muluzi, in 1994, until 2004 when he constitutionally retired is seen as a milestone in changing views about Muslims in Malawi.

“The fact that he was a Muslim President changed people’s mindset towards Islam and Muslims. For the first time, Muslims started having a sense of pride,” said Chabulika.

He recalled that it was during Muluzi’s time that Muslims were able to be recognized as people who could equally contribute towards the country’s development.

“Ever since that time, we have been able alongside our Christian brothers and sisters to co-exist and participate in matters of national building, without being discriminated against on the basis of religion.”

“We have reached a point of no return.”

Dr. Imran Shareef Mahomed, one of Malawi’s revered Muslim scholars, agrees.

“It was during this time that Muslims and non-Muslims realized that Islam was not a barrier to any form of progress, even in a society, where you are in a minority,” he told OnIslam.net.
“As Muslims, we will remain eternally grateful to his leadership in this regard.”

Hee Chairman, do you realised that all what you wrote is 5% of Nigeria and Nigerian problems.
Well, if that is your opinion, then you are thinking like a villager who his daily agenda is to farm and come back home.
Think beyond this.

KnowAll: Despite the failures of this government. It remains to be said without prejudice that the Jonathan's Government has being the best Federal Government since 1979.

Achievements within a short while(bearing in might these projects could easily have awarded and nothing to show) the Naija way of doing things!!!- cool

1. Lagos - Kano rail link rehabilitated now running(although very slow but still functional)

2. Police College, Ikeja fixed after abandoned by all Federal Government since the initial construction of the edifice.

3. Abuja National Stadium- Fixed to be handed back to the Federal Government after undergoing massive renovation.

4. New Terminal Buildings at some Airports - Kano, Benin, Enugu(on-going " now an international Airport), Abuja and some others.

5. Work has started in the The Port- Harcourt to Maiduguri rail line

6. Kaduna - Abuja rail-road started(much modern and faster train, the project has gone far should be completed b4 2015-so they say! huh)

7. Roads are the biggest failure at the moment, (having said that the dangerous artery of road called the Benin- Lagos dual carriage road) has been fixed. Although the Abuja - Lokoja has been ongoing for more than 5 years now, and the Lagos - Ibadan seems to change hands regularly, hopefully the last contract awarded to Julius Berger and RCC would be honored.

8. Electricity has improved, some parts of Awka in Anambra State are even boasting of 24 hours light making a VC of the local University to commend the Federal Government.

9. The Political football issue of the Niger 2nd bridge crossing we hope this time, the ground breaking ceremony initializing the commencement of the project is not a "photo-shoot" session. The jury is still out on that project.

10. Overall this President has done better than all other President since 1979.

Kudos to Ebele Jonathan, keep up the good works and try to finish some of the projects highlighted, getting back into Aso Rock should and would be a smooth sailing if you can be judicious with our resources. Nigerians love a winning team. Concentrate on your work and see the people respond to your beck and call.
