A 23-year-old Nigerian entrepreneur, Chris Kwekowe turned down a job offer to work as a software engineer at Microsoft, owned by the richest man in the world, Bill Gates, in order to begin his own start-up in Lagos. The Lagos State University computer science graduate proudly revealed this to Bill Gates during a television interview for Africa’s brightest young entrepreneurs in August 2016. Kwekowe, who won the 2015 Anzisha Prize which came with a $25,000 cheque, said he rejected the offer to build up his own startup, Slatecube– a website aimed at helping other young Nigerians find jobs. "When I told him, Gates was intrigued and he smiled. After the programme, all the directors were like, ‘Dude, you mean you actually turned down a job at Microsoft and had the guts to tell Bill Gates?’ Kwekowe founded Slatecube with his brother Emerald, 20, in October 2014. The pair funded their efforts by freelancing as web designers and running a software solutions firm. He said Slatecube seeks to solve that problem by nurturing the graduates through digital internships and so far, Slatecube has an 80% employment rate for its users. Companies that have used the platform, have saved over $100,000 in 2015 by hiring skilled, ready to work employees. In a Facebook post published last August, Chris narrated in details of his meeting with Bill Gates: "Oh yeah, I did meet with Bill Gates in Durban, South Africa where we had some candid discussion about everything - from his involvement with charitable causes in the continent, to how he makes time to be a great father for his kids. My favourite moments were watching his reaction after I told him I turned down job offers from Microsoft and the likes to pursue something more defining for me, and how Africa's development depends more on sustainable investments in innovative social startups like Slatecube that solve some of the continent's biggest problems, rather than donating entirely to charity organisations who end up requiring more financial injection to deal with the minutest of issues. Anyways, we'd be working with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to make our value proposition at Slatecube a pan-African privilege. Soon, you'd rather be in demand across the globe, and engage in companies and projects that make you better, and suits your career goals. Nothing can really be better" Source: Newsweek.europe/Chris Kwekowe/Facebook

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said corrupt elements are doing everything possible to obfuscate the good work of the present administration, as a response to the government’s determined fight against corruption. The Minister, who stated these while addressing the staff of the Nigerian Embassy in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, December 4th, said as the government fights corruption, corruption is also fighting back, using even unsuspecting sources, adding: "This is the biggest challenge facing the administration at the moment." He however assured that the Administration remains determined and focused in its efforts to root out corruption in the country. Responding to a question on how the government can better ensure the flow of timely and accurate information to Nigerian Missions abroad, Alhaji Mohammed said the Ministry would launch an Information App on 15 Dec. 2016 to provide real time information to Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora. He also said the Ministry is considering setting up a Foreign Service Information System as part of plans to furnish the Missions with much-needed information, especially for prospective investors and tourists. The Minister told the Embassy Staff that apart from using the traditional means of communicating with the people, the Administration has resorted to holding Town Hall Meetings in order to better inform Nigerians of the activities of government, as well as to get the necessary feedback on government’s programmes and policies. He disclosed, however, that the Town Hall Meetings, which has been held in five states and Abuja so far, will be held on a sectoral basis from next year, in order to provide more information to Nigerians on key sectors, including Agriculture, infrastructural development and the economy. Alhaji Mohammed also announced that efforts are being made to revitalize the National Orientation Agency (NOA), which he said is the closest to the grassroots, with a view to strengthening to be able to communicate the programmes and policies of the Administration to Nigerians "We are reinventing the NOA in a more professional manner. The challenge is to better equip the NOA staff with the latest communication facilities so that they can do their work more effectively," he said. The Minister, who was in Abu Dhabi to attend the International Conference on the Safeguarding of Cultural Heritage in Conflict Areas, said the Administration has acquitted itself creditably in fighting the insurgency in the North-east, tackling the incessant clashes between farmers and herders and taking concrete measures to end the militancy in the Niger Delta He said the government has already provided 200,000 of the 500,000 jobs it promised under the N-Power Volunteers Programme, while at the same time embarking on an agricultural initiative that will see Nigeria become self sufficient in rice and wheat in the shortest time possible. On the economic recession, Alhaji Mohammed said ”We are spending our way out of this recession, we are investing massively in infrastructural development: roads, railways, power etc, and creating jobs in the process.” Earlier, the Charge d’Affaires, Mr. Nura Rimi, said the Embassy is carrying out its assignment diligently in spite of the challenges facing it, adding that it recently bagged an award for excellence from the United Arab Emirates authorities, one of only three missions in the UAE that won the award. Issues raised by the Embassy Staff in their interaction with the Minister include the suspension of flights to Abuja by Emirates Airlines, the visa restriction to Nigerians willing to travel to the UAE, the need for Nigeria to tap from the $350 million renewable energy fund that is available in the UAE and the possibility of Nigeria partnering with the UAE Red Crescent to assist the Internally Displaced Persons in the North-east. Among top officials of the Embassy who attended the meeting are Mr. Aliyu Hamman (Minister – Economic); Mr. Rabiu Lawal (Minister – Consular); Mr. Zakari Usman (Senior Counsellor); Mr. Adesoye Samotu (Senior Counsellor), Mr. Bukar Salihu Malgin (Finance Attache) and Mr. Mohammed Bashar Magaji (Immigration Attache)

The choice Nigerians need to make in 2019 One politician strolled into the fourth republic with huge dose of democratic credentials. Alhaji Abubakar Atiku established himself as a democrat immediately he resigned from public service. He became a disciple of late Gen. Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, the great political tactician that swept the country like a hurricane. Members of this political machine included Chief Anthony Anenih, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Lamidi Adedibu, Dapo Sarumi, Yomi Edu and others. Turaki Abubakar was at the verge of winning the governorship election of Adamawa State in 1991 before former military President Ibrahim Babangida banned him and other frontline candidates across the country. Not deterred by the setback, he contested the presidential primary election of the Social Democratic Party and placed third out 30 contestants. Who is afraid of Atiku and why are they afraid of him? In understanding who and why they are afraid of Atiku, we need to analyse the politics of the fourth republic and properly situate his role(s) in proper context. It is worthy to mention that he was a founding member of the Peoples’ Democratic Party and actually contributed N500m to the party. It is obvious that he had already conquered the business world before assuming office as Vice President. In modern Nigeria, I have not seen a politician more tenacious that the Turaki Adamawa in defending his beliefs and projecting same for the benefit of humanity. Anybody in doubt should take a trip to the hill top of Abeokuta and debrief former Olusegun Obasanjo. He masked his intention on a third term agenda hinged on the need for policy continuity. He did not reckon with the tenacity of Atiku to rally positive forces of the political class to checkmate him. The political fallout on the Turaki was massive. Obasanjo unleashed the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) led by Nuhu Ribadu on him. Lies were churned out and international conspiracy was activated to damage the skyrocketing political profile of the former Vice President. However, his doggedness and commitment to the creation of an ideal Nigerian society kept him going. Today, he has emerged as the leading light in the remodelling of our nation. In moving Nigeria to political stability, tolerance and developmental Eldorado, what is needed is a thoroughbred politician imbued with economic foresight and ability to create jobs for the youth population. The youths have become despondent and feel left behind by the political and economic train. A tested hand like Atiku is surely needed to coordinate the proper integration of the youths into the economic mainstream. He is the highest individual employer of labour in Nigeria and a believer in excellence. The truth that cannot be dismissed is that among those jostling to convince Nigerians for their votes in 2019, only the Turaki has experience in job creation. This is the choice Nigerian must make in 2019 without sentiment and pandering to the propaganda of surrogates of past failures. The fragility of our mutual existence as a country cannot be over exaggerated. As a matter of fact, the erosion of our cultural, religious and social commonalities is an ever constant feature of the past two decades. There is need to undertake enormous reintegration of all divergent groups into a united country. Nobody can do it better than Atiku. He is a proven man of immense conviction and political muscles to navigate us to the destination of unity. President Muhammadu Buhari came at a time he was needed to abridge our drift towards excessive insecurity and anarchy. Atiku is the man to build the country for the happiness and prosperity of all citizens of Nigeria. |
Awka – The Nigerian Army “Operation Python Dance’’ in the South-East says some of its road blocks will be dismantled to facilitate free flow of traffic during the Yuletide. Col. Musa Sagir, Deputy Director, Public Relations of 82 Division Nigerian Army, Enugu, disclosed this while on patrol with newsmen at the River Niger Bridge head, Onitsha and Awka, on Sunday. Sagir said that it had become imperative to remove totally or shorten some of the check points, particularly within the bridge head, Onitsha, as the Yuletide drew closer. He called on other security agencies operating within the bridge head to support the Army to ensure free flow of traffic in the area. He said that the operation was not to witch-hunt any group or individuals but it was purely for military training and crime prevention. “Our men stay on the side of road watching in case of any criminality and obstruction on the road. “You have seen that we are not looking for any group or individual to arrest since our operation started on Nov. 27 and will end on Dec. 27 in the five eastern states. “The Nigerian Army has to ensure safety, peace and security, and to ensure that Nigeria’s security challenges are reduced to the barest minimum. “No holidays for all the military personnel in the South-East throughout the period of the exercise,’’ Sagir said. |
