Literature › Nigeria’s Soyinka Not Surprised Buhari’s Shine Is Dulling by Thisis2raw(op): 10:47pm On Dec 01, 2016
Nigerian literary icon Wole Soyinka on Thursday said he was not surprised that President Muhammadu Buhari has lost popularity just 18 months into office, given the high expectations that weighed on his government.

The former military ruler won the 2015 election on an agenda of “change”, vowing to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency, fight graft, fix broken infrastructure and heal the economy.

But since his election, the economy has officially gone into recession and global energy prices have plummeted.

A relentless rebel campaign to sabotage the production of oil, the country’s main export, has added to the woes.

“There’s nothing surprising to me about his losing popularity, it should be expected,” said Soyinka, who was a fierce critic of Buhari’s earlier term as head of state after taking power in a coup in 1983.

“People wanted change, that word was not just a slogan, it was a promise,” Soyinka told AFP in Johannesburg.

But when he took over power, “Nigeria was sinking”.

“Fulfilling political promises when you take over the reins of power and you have to clean up a lot of mess, it’s not easy,” said the Nobel prize-winning author.

The ex-military ruler has seen his approval ratings decline in recent months from 80 percent last year to 41 percent this September, according to analysis firm BMI Research.

Soyinka said while Buhari was the better choice of the two candidates in last year’s vote where he squared off against ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, it was high time the country weaned itself off leaders with military backgrounds.

“I was not particularly enamoured of the idea of a military person continuing — for heaven’s sake, it’s been too long,” he said.

“I feel very passionate that it’s about time that we eliminated the last vestiges of military control, of military representation. It’s as if there are no brains outside the military.”

Nigeria abandoned military rule in 1999 in favour of multi-party democracy following six military coups after independence from Britain in 1960.

Politics › NANS To Buhari: Data Price Hike An Attempt To Pit You Against Nigerians by Thisis2raw(op): 7:53pm On Dec 01, 2016
Against the backdrop of the botched plans by telecommunications companies to review data tariff, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to reject unpopular policies that are likely to cast him as insensitive to the plight of less privileged citizens.

In a statement by its National President, Comrade Chinonso Obasi, NANS informed President Buhari that the plan to jack up the price of data is not only a black market attempt to tax all mobile phone users, but above all Nigerian students.

Obasi expressed regrets that Nigerian students, including those studying overseas have been subjected into harrowing experiences that threatens their academic pursuit, stressing that the recent move to descend heavily on data will definitely make research and communication very difficult for suffering Nigerian students.

Lamenting the series of traumatic experiences students have been made to grapple with, the NANS President noted that the hike in dollar rate caused by volatility of international oil market, recent strike action by the Academic Staff of Union of Universities (ASUU) and the delay in mobilisation of youth corps members make the data hike too much a burden to bear.

The NANS President observed that internet has become an indispensable companion of undergraduates to pursue extensive research in the competitive knowledge-based economy, adding that increasing the price of data would bind the hands of students and drive the back to the stone-age method of learning.

Expressing dismay that the NCC would be crying more than bereaved by suggesting the punitive rate to favour its so-called small operators to acquire market share and profitability, NANS said the commission lost sight of the economy of large scale the operators enjoy by greater penetration in Nigeria’s growing mobile internet access.

“Nigerian students wish to register their rejection of the plan by NCC to increase the price of internet data. We recall a previous attempt by the authorities to restrain access to the social media. But this latest plan to descend heavily on students through this backdoor taxation is an affront to scholarship and freedom of communication,” NANS stated.

NANS therefore pleaded with President Buhari to ensure that the attempt to punish Nigerian students does not see the light of the day, pointing out that even though taxation was a genuine way for government to generate revenue, it should not be done in such a way to kill the future generation.

Health › Start Each Day Drinking Water On An Empty Stomach – See Benefits by Thisis2raw(op): 9:25am On Nov 29, 2016
You may have heard it before now. Take as much water as the body requires as possible. Drink water on an empty stomach first thing in the morning.
Water is simply an all round life saving natural resource after air. The earth surface is covered by over 70% of water. Also our bodies are made up of 60-70%.
With that we can see that water is a vital part of man and his environment.

For as long as drinking water first thing in the morning is concerned, the Japanese will be put into consideration.
The Japanese women drink water immediately on waking up and over on an empty stomach. This helps them maintain a remarkable health balance.

Drinking plenty of water can help in increasing the production of muscle cells and new blood cells. It helps in blood circulation.

When we drink water in the morning on an empty stomach, the idea is to cleanse the system by flushing away toxins which build up in the system over the night.
So when you take water like that, you can be sure that your system is not threatened by toxins.

These are some advantages of drinking water on an empty stomach:

Detoxification of the body.
Improves metabolic rates. The more water you take, the more bowel movements you get. This will definitely be helpful for gastritis and constipation patients.
Drinking water on an empty stomach first thing in the morning is a good way to support weight loss programmes. It contains no calories. People who want to lose weight eat their food accompanied with water. That way, they are full and add no extra calories to their systems.

It reduces indigestion and heartburn.
Good for the skin: Starting the day with one or more glasses of water keeps the skin hydrated. As such it helps to improve the radiance of the skin.

Water makes up almost ¼ of the weight of a hair strand. Sufficient intake of water nourishes the hair. Drinking on an empty stomach helps out the more.

It saves the body from health conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, Kidney Stones and Bladder/Urinary tract Infections.

Drinking water on an empty stomach boosts immunity. Water on an empty stomach helps in cleansing and balancing of the lymphatic system.

It also takes care of head aches and reinvigorates the body system.

Politics › Buhari’s Rigid Leadership Style Is Making Nigeria's Economic Harder- Bloomberg by Thisis2raw(op): 4:21pm On Nov 28, 2016
In an article titled "Nigeria's Economy needs Visionary Leadership", International business website, Bloomberg, said President Buhari’s rigid leadership style is making Nigeria's economic problems harder to solve. Read the article which was published today below.

Africa and the world cannot afford a failing economy in the continent’s most populous nation. Yet that is exactly what Nigeria might be getting: Its economy is on track to shrink by1.7 percent this year, the official unemployment rate has more than doubled over the last two years, and inflation is at an 11-year high.

One concrete step President Muhammadu Buhari could take to address the crisis would be to eliminate the country’s disastrous foreign exchange controls. Instead, Buhari has made no secret of his desire to defend Nigeria's currency.

And the central bank has mostly gone along. Despite allowingthe devaluation of the naira in June, it is continuing to manipulate the exchange rate -- discouraging foreign investors, creating a crippling shortage of dollars for businesses that need to import, and feeding a currency black market. To keep down the street price of vanishing dollars, Buhari’s government hasarrested informal money-changers. More capital controls are in the works.

Dismantling Nigeria’s foreign exchange controls will doubtless cause at least a short-term rise in inflation. Yet doing so will not only draw foreign investment and make the economy more productive and competitive, but also cut off a conduit for corruption. Buhari can cushion the blow for Nigeria’s poor through targeted cash payments -- an approach Nigeria has used in electronically delivering subsidies to poor farmers. That same mechanism could also shield the poor from the regressive impact of an increase in Nigeria’s value-added tax -- which is relatively low but a potentially valuable source of additional government revenue.

There are other ways to stimulate the economy, of course. But Nigeria’s Senate rejected Buhari’s three-year spending blueprint and an ambitious campaign to borrow $30 billion abroad because they lacked details. Meanwhile, his reluctance to sell off state-owned assets has undermined other efforts to raise revenue.

To be sure, Buhari faced ugly circumstances when he took office in May 2015. The plunge in oil prices had left the economy reeling and government coffers bare, and attacks by Boko Haram were ravaging the country. Yet while some progress has been made fighting both terrorism and corruption, Buhari’s rigid leadership style has made the country's economic problems harder to solve.

Buhari’s election and pledges of good governance rightfully raised expectations across Africa. To fulfill those hopes, however, he will have to demonstrate more flexibility.

#1 Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Manchester United)

The Armenian’s inclusion in this list might be slightly surprising since he has had only 4 Premier League appearances, but Mkhitaryan has not had a good time at Old Trafford with Jose Mourinho not trusting the Armenian during key matches. The 27-year-old was in impressive form for Dortmund last season, and his move to United for a fee of £27 million was labelled as one of the best deals of the summer. However, the move has not gone according to plan with Mourinho speaking about Mkhitaryan’s performances:“He is trying. Obviously, he is not happy, but he is transforming his frustration in a good way, which is to close the mouth, work hard and try to adapt. He needs less pressure and better conditions for him to express his qualities.”Manchester United fans will be hoping that the Armenian international soon shows what he is capable of.

#2 Moussa Sissoko (Tottenham Hotspur)

Tottenham’s club record signing, Moussa Sissoko has had a season to forget so far. The former Newcastle United man was wanted by plenty of top clubs like Liverpool, Chelsea and PSG, but Spurs were successful in convincing the Frenchman to join them. However, Sissoko has struggled to have a positive impact with even Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino criticising the Frenchman’s impact, completely leaving out Sissoko from the matchday squad against Chelsea:“Football is not about money,” Pochettino said when asked about Sissoko’s absence. “It is about players being better, and that they show on the training ground that they are better than another team-mate and that they deserve to be involved or not. In my opinion, I need to take the decisions and I believe that the players that started in the game [on Saturday] and the players on the bench deserved to be involved in the game.”Sissoko will definitely need to do a lot more if he is to justify his hefty price tag. The below video shows why Tottenham were so keen on signing:

#3 Jamie Vardy (Leicester City)

Leicester City’s incredible Premier League triumph in 2015/16 season had a few standout stars and Jamie Vardy was definitely one of the heroes last season. The Englishman’s goals played a major role in their incredible success with Vardy becoming something of a cult hero among the Leicester City fans. This season, however, Vardy, like the rest of the Leicester squad has struggled to have any sort of impact in the Premier League. in 12 appearances so far, the striker has netted only 2 goals. The foxes are currently sitting 14th in the Premier League table and a major reason for their struggles has been Vardy’s shortcomings in front of goal. The defending champions will be hoping that Vardy gets his party started once again.

#4 Riyad Mahrez (Leicester City)

2015/16 PFA player of the year award winner Riyad Mahrez is undoubtedly one of the most talented players in the Premier League. However, he, like his Leicester City team-mate Jamie Vardy, has struggled to rediscover his best form this season.A supremely talented dribbler and capable of making the extraordinary look ridiculously easy, Mahrez has shown glimpses of his immense skill in the Premier League so far, but is yet to consistently torment opposition defenders like how he did last season. However, things are looking slightly promising for the Foxes as Mahrez seems to have struck up a good partnership with fellow Algerian striker Islam Slimani and Ranieri will be hoping that Mahrez shakes off his malaise and starts performing at the level he is capable of once again. The video below shows why Mahrez deserved the PFA player of the year award last season.

Sports › 5 Top Stars Who Have Flopped In The Premier League This Season by Thisis2raw(op): 3:46pm On Nov 28, 2016
The Premier League season is back and it has already been full of surprises, twists and turns. There have been plenty of star performers already like Diego Costa, Sergio Aguero, Phillipe Coutinho and Eden Hazard. However, there have also been some star names who have not played upto their potential and have struggled to impress this season. Without much ado, let us take a look at 5 star names who have struggled:

#5 Yohan Cabaye (Crystal Palace)

Once an integral part of the French national team’s midfield. Yohan Cabaye is now struggling to have an impact at Premier League strugglers Crystal Palace. He is described as a player who possesses "excellent vision, great ball control", and "provides technical quality", but all that quality which Cabaye undoubtedly possesses has struggled to come to the fore this season. This season, the experienced Frenchman has not lived up to expectations and Alan Pardew’s side have struggled without their star man in prime form. Currently sitting at 13th in the Premier League table, Alan Pardew will be hoping that his French midfield general rediscovers his form soon and pulls the strings in the Palace midfield again.
