SOUTH AFRICAN SHOPPING MALLS RIVAL THE BEST IN THE WORLD

Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Thiza: 3:46pm On Sep 06, 2014
HARDLY a month has gone by this year without construction starting on yet another new mall or a newly completed one opening its doors.

In fact, at least 25 new shopping centres, each one exceeding 30,000m² in size, are expected to be added to the market between 2013 and 2016, according to figures from the South African Council of Shopping Centres.

That will bring South Africa’s tally of large, regional and super-regional malls to an estimated 180 — more than double the number five years ago.

The largest mall opening of 2013 took place last week: Sasol Pension Fund, Retail Africa and Pivotal Property Fund’s 76,000m² Cradlestone Mall, just off the N14 Krugersdorp highway on the West Rand.

Other mega-malls expected to open in the next two to three years include JSE-listed Attacq’s massive 120,000m² Mall of Africa at Waterfall City near Midrand, Billion group’s Bay West (87,500m²) in Port Elizabeth and Forest Hill (68,000m²) in Pretoria, and Flanagan & Gerard and Intaprop’s Atlantic Mall (78,000m²) in Cape Town.

The Nigerian military has vowed to do everything possible to defend the country against Boko Haram in the face of rapid territorial gains by the sect in the last two weeks.
“In the light of the current challenges in the counter-terrorism efforts in the north east which has understandably elicited a sense of apprehension among citizens and even foreign allies, the DHQ wishes to reiterate ….that everything will be done to reverse the situation and defeat the rampaging terrorists,” said defence spokesperson, Chris Olukolade.
Boko Haram is reportedly in control of Gwosa, Borno State, and has fought to take over Bama, another strategic town in the state, displacing thousands of residents as soldiers also retreat from the area.
Under intense fighting more than a week ago, at least 480 Nigerian troops crossed the border into Cameroon. The military said the move was a “tactical manoeuvre”.
Boko Haram has threatened an attack to capture Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, stirring concerns among Nigerians and foreign allies about the capacity of the military to wade off any significant attack.
In a statement Friday, the defence headquarters vowed every action to defend the nation and defeat the extremist group.
“While welcoming all the concerns shown by Nigerians and a section of the international community following the increased menace and activities of terrorists, it is necessary to reassure all that the Nigerian Armed Forces is more than ever determined and committed to the defence of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria, regardless of any odd,” the statement said.
The military said it was conscious of what is at stake if it fails to reverse Boko Haram’s gains.
“It is not only the pride and reputation of the military that is at stake but that of the entire nation. We therefore urge our citizens not to lose hope or be disenchanted but to remain steadfast and supportive of the military as all steps are being taken to ensure the success of the counter-insurgency operations, especially at this crucial time when our sovereignty is being challenged,” the military said.

NOW NIGERIAN MILITARY ACCEPT THE CAPTURE OF BAMA AFTER A WEEK OF DENIYING...NIGERIA MILITARY RUNNING AWAY WITH FAMILIES....HAHHAHAAAH

Soldiers have begun to move their families out of the two major barracks in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

Soldiers, who spoke with Saturday PUNCH, said the decision to move their families out of Giwa and Maimalari military barracks was part of the preparation for a fierce battle against the Boko Haram insurgents.

They said they were directed by their commanders to move their children and wives out of the barracks.

It was gathered that the action of the soldiers had heightened fears among residents of Maiduguri, who saw the families being moved out of the city.

One of our correspondents sighted one of the soldiers on Lagos Island on Thursday with his family members in a blue gulf car.

The soldier, who was accused of overloading his vehicle by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps, pleaded for help as he explained that he was coming from Maiduguri, adding that he moved his family to Lagos for safety.

Another soldier, who resides in the Giwa Barracks, spoke to one of our correspondents on the condition of anonymity. He said he had already moved his wife and children to Edo State following the directive by their commanders.

“We are moving our wives and children out because they should not be there if a battle begins. I have taken mine out of the city,” the soldier said

The soldiers confided in our correspondents that the situation was tense.

Boko Haram had captured Bama, the second largest city in Borno State early this week. It had two weeks ago seized Gwoza, where it occupied a police academy.

There is a report that the Boko Haram sect, which seems to have been emboldened by its success in Gwoza and Bama, plans to attack Maiduguri.

Some of the people who escaped the latest Boko Haram attack on Bama, Borno State, have narrated their experience, describing it as painful.

Many of the troubled residents, who narrated their close shave with death, revealed that they trekked more than 50 kilometers in order to get to safety in Maiduguri.

When our correspondent visited the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in the heart of the troubled city, many of the victims were seen queuing to collect blankets, sleeping mats and other relief items.

It is expected that Kusile would consist of six 800 megawatt coal-fired generating units for a total generating capacity of 4,800 megawatts. Other reports state that the power station would have a total capacity of 5,400 megawatts and would be operational y December 2015....Kusile is the first South African power facility to incorporate wet flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) technology

@AUGUSTUS NOW YOU UNDERSTAND WHY THE WORLD COMES TO SOUTH AFRICA

According to the figures, South Africa outstripped the average global growth rate of about 4% as estimated by the UN World Tourism Organisation with strong year-on-year growth (33.7%) coming from Asia. Excluding Africa, which produced a 7.5% growth in tourists to South Africa last year, overseas tourist numbers rose by 15.1%, which was one of the highest growth rates in the world.

Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk told journalists that the infrastructure put in place for the 2010 World Cup had stood South Africa in good stead and it now had good facilities. South Africa’s participation in the grouping of Brazil, Russia, India and China (Brics) also had the huge potential to boost tourism. They accounted for 330,834 of the international tourist numbers last year.

The growing importance of tourism to the economy was highlighted by Statistics South Africa data which showed that in 2011 the direct contribution of tourism to GDP rose by 5% to R84.3bn — well above the 3.1% growth in the economy in 2011-12. Domestic tourism expenditure expanded to R101bn in 2011 from R69bn in 2010.

Hundreds of civilians are fleeing Nigeria's northeastern city of Maiduguri as fears grow that Boko Haram Islamic terrorists will try to assault the Borno state capital after seizing towns and territory around it, residents said yesterday.

Heavily armed Boko Haram fighters using captured military vehicles and weapons have taken towns and villages to the north, east and south of Maiduguri in the past few weeks and days.

Apprehension among Maiduguri residents grew after fierce fighting since Monday between Nigeria's military and the militants over the town of Bama, 70km southeast of Maiduguri. Thousands have fled Bama amid conflicting reports of who has control.

The militants took the smaller town of Bara on Tuesday, to the southwest of Maiduguri.

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau last month declared a "Muslim territory" in the northeast after capturing the town of Gwoza on the Cameroon border.

He is believed to be trying to mimic the example of the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, which announced the creation of a trans-national "caliphate".

Travellers packed bus stations in Maiduguri waiting for transport west to Damaturu in neighbouring Yobe state, the only safe exit route. Vehicles laden with passengers and possessions were also seen on the Maiduguri-Damaturu road.

Civil servants, traders and the families of soldiers were among those moving out, residents said.
