Education / FG Suspends Accreditation Of Degree Certificates From Benin Republic, Togo by ThompsonJoo: 1:37pm On Jan 02
The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Education on Tuesday announced the suspension of accreditation of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo.

https://dailynigerian.com/undercover-how-daily-nigerian/#google_vignette

According to a statement on Tuesday signed by Augustina Obilor-Duru on behalf of the Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, the government lamented that “some Nigerians deploy nefarious means and unconscionable methods to get a Degree with the end objective of getting graduate job opportunities for which they are not qualified”.

It followed an investigative report by Daily Nigerian Newspaper titled “How Daily Nigerian reporter bagged Cotonou varsity degree in 6 weeks”.

According to the government, the suspension persists pending the outcome of an investigation involving the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education of Nigeria and the two countries as well as the Department of State Security Services and the National Youths Service Corps.
The statement reads, “ The Federal Ministry of Education vehemently decries such acts and with effect from 2nd January 2024 is suspending evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from Benin and Togo Republics pending the outcome of an investigation that would involve the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria and the two countries, the ministries responsible for Education in the two countries as well the Department of State Security Services and the National Youths Service Corps.

“The Ministry therefore wish to call on the General Public to support its efforts, show understanding and provide useful information that will assist the Committee in finding lasting solutions in order to prevent further occurrence.

“The Ministry has also commenced internal administrative processes to determine the culpability or otherwise of her staff for which applicable Public Service Rules would be applied.

“The issue of degree mills institutions, i.e institutions that exist on paper or operate in clandestine manner outside the control of regulators is a global problem that all countries grapple with. FME has been contending with the problem including illegal institutions located abroad or at home preying on unsuspecting, innocent Nigerians and some desperate Nigerians who deliberately patronize such outlets. Periodically, warnings have been issued by the Ministry and NUC against the resort to such institutions and in some instances, reports made to security agencies to clamp down on the perpetrators. The ministry will continue to review its strategy to plug any loopholes, processes and procedures and deal decisively with any conniving officials.”

The PUNCH reports that in 2020, the NYSC said it would commence the prosecution of Nigerian graduates with fake credentials, especially from West African countries.

A former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed also in 2020 noted that certain Nigerians were purchasing fake degrees from degree mills in and out of Nigeria.

In September 2023, a newspaper exposed a certain London Graduate School selling fake honorary degrees to Nigerians.

*BREAKING NEWS: EFCC Arrest Obasanjo, Buhari both to face trial on Monday- Sahara Reporter*

It was a mild drama at Muritala mohammed international Airport today around 2:30pm Nigeria time when DSS and EFCC officers arrest former president Olusegun Obasanjo on his way out of the country. The former president who was said to wear a white Agbada with a black shoe was arrested by DSS with Hand cuff on his hands the moment he arrived at the airport this afternoon. As at time we are filling this report, immediate past president of Nigeria Muhammad Buhari was also said to have been arrested by DSS in his residence at Duara

The main reason for the arrest of these two prominent politician is yet to be Known but our source has it that EFCC and ICPC has sent different letters of invitation to former president Olusegun Obasanjo and buhari due to different sorts of allegations which was levelled against them but they refuse to yields to their request.

Education / Ambrose Alli University Medical Students Forced To Sign An Undertaking by ThompsonJoo: 4:19pm On Dec 06, 2023
Is this not bondage ??

1. After my Part 1 MBBS (Professional) Examination, I will undertake an 18-month intercalated BSc programme in Anatomy or Physiology in the College of Medicine.

2. I will wait until anytime there is space for me to proceed to Clinical (400 Level) before I will do so.

3. I will continue to pay school fees as a medical student.

Forcing students to sign an undertaking like this on the day of their exam is madness. Even cults don't operate like this. You're asking people who have already spent 5 years in the school to sign away their futures, and every opportunity to get justice?

These are children with dreams. How can a school be so shameless?? They paid their fees, paid all the money you asked for, the government paid your salaries, and this how you're going to treat your own students? Is it because your children are not here?

Imo State Government Reserves All Hotels in the State in Anticipation of Gubernatorial Election

*Imo State, Nigeria - October 30, 2023*

In a surprising turn of events, the Imo State Government has reportedly booked all available hotels in the state ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial election. This move has raised eyebrows and generated significant public interest and speculation about the motivations behind this unprecedented action.

Sources close to the government have revealed that the decision to secure accommodations across the state was made in an effort to ensure logistical readiness for the influx of visitors expected during the gubernatorial election. The election, which is slated for November 15, 2023, is anticipated to draw a substantial number of residents, political party members, and observers to the state.

Imo State, known for its vibrant political landscape and historical significance, has witnessed intense political rivalries in the lead-up to the election. Political analysts speculate that the government's decision to book all hotels may be linked to concerns over potential disruptions and security issues during the election period.

Critics of the government, however, have expressed their reservations about this move, suggesting that it could be an attempt to manipulate the election process by controlling accommodations and influencing the movement of political stakeholders and observers.

The opposition parties have decried the state government's actions as undemocratic and have called for transparency and equal access to accommodations for all participants in the election. Legal experts are closely examining the situation to determine if such actions are within the bounds of electoral laws and regulations.

This development has added a new layer of complexity to an already contentious gubernatorial race in Imo State. As the election date draws near, all eyes will be on how the situation unfolds and whether the government's decision to book all hotels will have a significant impact on the electoral process.

Education / AAU Set Rusticate 16 Students' Union Leaders For Protesting Against Tuition Fee by ThompsonJoo: 8:17pm On Sep 11, 2023
.Sources told SaharaReporters that the management had also reached out to the parents of the affected students' union leaders and were using the Department of State Services (DSS) to threaten them.

The management of Edo State's Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, has concluded plans to rusticate 16 members of the students' union leadership in the school for leading a protest against the hike in tuition fees, sources in the school told SaharaReporters.

SaharaReporters on Monday obtained one of the pages of the letter showing a list of the affected students' union leaders which was also copied to the university’s Vice Chancellor, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellors – Academic and Administration – among other top university officials.

The students' union leaders which the university is set to suspend include Oshioke Abdulfatai Ibrahim, Bahel Adaeze Princess, Edubamoh Lifted Oyinbo, Victor Orobosa Osakue, Oghenovo Andrew, Marcus Oluwadamilola, Theo-Doza Ekundayo Folorunsho, Osasumwen Emmanuel, and Emmanuel Enoghama.

Others are Igoh Christopher Osas, Adewole Adedayo, Olusegun Success, Ilegbodu Destiny, Abiola Oluwaseyi and Jimah Mubarak.

Sources told SaharaReporters that the management had also reached out to the parents of the affected students' union leaders and were using the Department of State Services (DSS) to threaten them.

“The DSS extracted the biodata of the students and called their parents, asking them to caution their children to withdraw from this struggle and stop asking the management to reverse the school fees. The DSS did that on Sunday,” one of the sources said.

But speaking with SaharaReporters, the school's Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Aladenika, denied the planned suspension of the students.

“I don’t know where you got that document from. As an image maker, I have sent the position, which affected the schools and the students. I don’t have such information. That circular that they are pushing around may be preemptive blackmail. The issue the management is treating as we speak is the meeting between some selected students and the DSS.

Don’t forget that the student union had been dissolved before the school went on a compulsory break. From our records, students are at home,” he said.

Education / Ambrose Alli Disbands Students’ Union For Staging Protest Over Extortion And Fee by ThompsonJoo: 4:45pm On Sep 04, 2023
The university management in an internal memorandum released on Friday, September 1, 2023, ordered the immediate dissolution of the students’ union for allegedly breaching some provisions of the school’s rules and regulations.

The management of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State disbanded the students’ union for staging a protest against tuition fee hikes and alleged extortion of students by the authority.

The university management in an internal memorandum released on Friday, September 1, 2023, ordered the immediate dissolution of the students’ union for allegedly breaching some provisions of the school’s rules and regulations.

FILE

The memorandum reads: “While it is not out of place for students to exercise their right to protest, it is paramount to emphasize that there are laid down procedures to be adopted, which are clearly defined in the Student Information Handbook.

“The protests of 31 August and 1 September 2023 by students led by the Student Union officials, which manifested in the illegal locking of the University main gate, clearly disrupted academic and administrative activities in the University and created security tension. Specifically, it disrupted the commendation service for late Rev. Professor Moses Isunu Ailemen, which had been scheduled to take place at the International/Students Conference Center on 1st September 2023.

“To this end, the Student Union, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma has completely flouted the provisions of Section 19, subsections (h) and (i) of the rules and regulations enshrined in the Student Information Handbook. Under subsection (1), it is clearly stated, without any form of ambiguity, that the organizers of the demonstration must ensure that there is no disruption or obstruction of educational and other activities of the University including administration, lecture, tutorial, and other related events.

“Consequent on the above, the entire Student Union, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma is hereby dissolved and stands dissolved. The Student Union officials should return all union properties in their possession to the Security Division within 48 hours.

“All students are advised to go about their normal academic activities as all issues in contention will be resolved through dialogue and other relevant mechanisms.

However, a source in the school told SaharaReporters that what led to the students’ protest was a “huge increment in tuition fees despite economic hardship in the country”.

“Last session, the total fee for the medical laboratory was N131,400 but now it is N237,500,” the student told SaharaReporters.

He added that the management had also imposed some unnecessary charges on the students to milk them.

The source said, “An MoU agreement was signed between the former union and the present management that the Edo Health Insurance Scheme will be for only fresh students but they went ahead and implemented it for all students as against the agreement.

“Meanwhile, some families are already under this health scheme which makes it a burden to register twice and the issue of the unequipped health centre of the university is there.

“Also, there is an increase in school fees for old students despite this hardship.

“Thirdly, we pay school fees in two installments for those that can't afford full payment but if you calculate what will be an installment, it is higher than the full fee.

“Also, the management will tell the students that the governor is the problem and that we should protest at the Government House yet they will tell the governor that the students are being political because they want to please him.”

“Students pay for everything all in the name of running the university,” the source added.
