After nearly a decade at the Ambrose Alli University College of Medicine in Ekpoma, a newly inducted medical doctor, Dr Wilson Efua Stephanie, has moved many with a deeply emotional and unusual souvenir, a pack of garri. In a heartfelt reflection on her journey, she described garri as her savior throughout the demanding years of medical school. She recalled how there were many difficult days when lectures were overwhelming, finances were tight, and survival often depended on the simplest meals. Through it all, garri remained a constant source of comfort that helped her push through exhaustion, pressure, and uncertainty. Now fully inducted as a doctor, she chose to mark her achievement in a symbolic way. Instead of luxury items or conventional souvenirs, she held up garri as a reminder of everything she endured to reach the finish line. To her, it is more than food. It represents sacrifice, endurance, quiet struggle, and the journey from hardship to triumph, a story now sealed with the title of doctor. https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSCJ7uBdS/

ABUJA — The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties. The other political parties the court directed the electoral body to deregister are the Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP). The court order followed a judgment delivered by Justice Peter Lifu. The National Forum of Former Legislators had, in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/2026, prayed the court to determine whether INEC has a constitutional obligation to remove political parties that fail to meet the electoral performance thresholds set out in Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as reinforced by the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC’s regulations. It was the position of the plaintiff that the five political parties listed as defendants in the matter had persistently failed to meet the constitutional benchmarks required to retain their registration. The former legislators stressed that the requirements include winning at least 25 per cent of votes in a state during a presidential election or securing at least one elective seat at the national, state, or local government level. They told the court that the ADC and the four other parties performed poorly in both the 2023 general elections and by-elections conducted by INEC, thereby failing to win seats across key tiers of government. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2026/06/breaking-court-orders-inec-to-deregister-adc-accord-3-others/

The claim that Governor Willie Obiano used bulldozers to demolish the houses of kidnappers immediately after succeeding Peter Obi is FACTUALLY CORRECT. However, the broader claim that the Bakassi Boys "got out of control" during Peter Obi's tenure is MISLEADING, as the Bakassi Boys were actually banned and replaced by federal forces before Obi took office Fact Check Breakdown Claim: Governor Obiano used bulldozers to bring down kidnappers' houses. Verdict: CORRECT. Details: Shortly after taking office in March 2014, Willie Obiano launched a massive security crackdown. Some students reportedly collapsed during the Children’s Day at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State, after being affected by pepper spray. The event on Wednesday, organised to celebrate school children in the state, turned chaotic after some male students allegedly made inappropriate advances towards female students at the venue. A member of a private security outfit intervened, but the students were said to have regrouped and attacked the bouncer, who then sprayed pepper spray at them, affecting other students in the process. A parent, who identified himself as Oboh Emmanuel, said the behaviour of the students attracted the attention of security personnel stationed at the stadium. He said, “The behaviour of those uncultured students attracted the attention of the bouncers stationed at the stadium as they rebuked the male students.” It was gathered that several students, particularly females, reportedly fainted after inhaling the substance, while many of the affected students were rushed to the Edo Specialist Hospital for treatment. When our correspondent visited the hospital on Wednesday night, two students were still receiving treatment, while a medical personnel on duty said they would be discharged later that night. The medical emergency is not too serious. The students were brought in after inhaling the substance, but they have all been attended to and discharged. “We have two more here, and they will be discharged this night as they have recovered fully,” the medical personnel said. Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Patrick Ebojele, confirmed the incident and said the security personnel who used the pepper spray had been detained. He said all the affected students, except two, had been discharged from the hospital, adding that the remaining students were being kept under observation. “The two students are not seriously injured. Doctors want to observe them overnight. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, is still at the hospital. The man who used pepper spray has been detained. “The incident did not happen the way it is being exaggerated. All modalities were put in place to ensure the children enjoy their day,” Ebojele s https://punchng.com/childrens-day-students-faint-as-bouncer-uses-pepper-spray-on-unruly-youth-in-edo/?amp

GOVERNMENT OF RIVERS STATE PRESS STATEMENT MY DECISION TO WITHDRAW FROM THE RIVERS STATE GUBERNATORIAL PRIMARIES Fellow Rivers People, After deep reflection and extensive consultations with my family, friends, and associates, I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to withdraw from the APC gubernatorial primaries. I do so with a full heart and with a firm commitment to support whoever emerges as the candidate of our great party. Leadership is ultimately about sacrifice. There comes a time when personal ambition must yield to the greater good of the people. Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest. To my supporters who stood firmly with me throughout this journey who gave their time, resources, prayers, and unwavering hope, I offer my deepest gratitude. I understand the disappointment, the anger, and the pain many of you may feel. Much has indeed been invested and much sacrificed along the way. But please know that your loyalty and trust were never in vain. My silence over this period was deliberate and strategic, guided always by the higher interest of our state and our people. As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace. Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose. It is enough to say that I have faced immense pressures and difficult choices, but my love for Rivers State remains greater than anything else. I sincerely thank our great party, the All Progressives Congress, for the platform and support extended to me throughout this process. I also express my profound appreciation to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his support and encouragement. The APC remains our collective home, and I urge all party faithful and supporters to remain steadfast and committed as we continue to build a stronger and more united future together. Let it be clearly understood that I stepped aside from participating in the upcoming River’s state Gubernatorial election not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity and I remain committed to serving the good people of Rivers state till the end of my term. Thank you, and may God bless Rivers State. Says Ediene Itak has suffered years of neglect, marginalisation Former National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Danielson Akpan, has joined the race for the Ikono State Constituency seat in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on the platform of the Labour Party (LP). Speaking on Monday shortly after submitting his expression of interest and nomination forms, Akpan said his decision to contest was driven by what he described as the prolonged marginalisation and neglect of Ediene Itak within Ikono Local Government Area. According to him, the area has remained politically sidelined despite existing zoning arrangements within the local government. “My people are not only marginalised but completely abandoned,” he said, noting that residents of the area had continued to suffer neglect in terms of political representation and development. Akpan explained that Ikono is divided into three geopolitical zones, Ikono South, Ikono Middle and Ediene Itak, stressing that major political offices are currently concentrated in Ikono South. “You have the member representing the area in the House of Representatives from the same zone. You also have the House of Assembly member and the local government chairman from the same area. Ediene Itak is the only zone left without any political position,” he said. He further alleged that there had been a prior understanding on rotational leadership within the local government, particularly regarding the House of Assembly seat and the local government chairmanship. According to him, stakeholders from Ediene Itak had earlier agreed to support the incumbent lawmaker for a second term based on assurances that the seat would subsequently rotate to their zone. He, however, expressed disappointment that the arrangement was allegedly not honoured. “When it was time for the zoning arrangement to take effect, the people were told to allow the incumbent pursue another term. That has never been the practice, and my people rejected it,” he added. Akpan also claimed that Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, during meetings with stakeholders ahead of the local government elections, agreed that the two positions would eventually rotate back to Ediene Itak by 2026 and 2027. Speaking on what he would bring differently if elected, the former student leader promised effective representation, people-oriented legislation and improved democratic dividends for constituents. “What is most important in legislative business is quality legislation that directly impacts the people. My priority will be to represent the interests of the people and ensure that whatever belongs to them is attracted to the constituency,” he said. Describing himself as “an activist and not a politician,” Akpan maintained that he would continue to champion positive legislation, effective representation and proper oversight functions if given the mandate. He also described the Labour Party as a people-centred platform committed to promoting better opportunities and development for citizens. Born in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, Akpan is a graduate of Mass Communication from Nasarawa State University. He is also a member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations and a frontline activist with years of involvement in advocacy and human rights campaigns. As former National President of NANS, he championed the anti-xenophobia campaign and was widely known for advocating the rights and welfare of Nigerian students across the country. He was also vocal in opposing the administration of former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, over the non-payment of students’ scholarships and bursaries in the state. Beyond student-related issues, Akpan equally advocated for the rights of civil servants, particularly on the payment of gratuities and pensions. Supporters of the aspirant described him as a grassroots activist deeply rooted in the struggle for justice and human rights, expressing confidence that he would provide effective and people-oriented representation if elected. Reacting to his declaration, the Akwa Ibom State Chairman of the Labour Party, Mrs. Freena Akpanusong, assured the aspirant of the party’s support. The party leadership, after receiving the expression of interest and nomination forms, stated that Ikono State Constituency needed “a representative like Danielson Akpan” and pledged to stand by him throughout the process to ensure victory at the polls. https://thesun.ng/ex-nans-president-joins-aibom-assembly-race-on-lp-platform/?fbclid=IwdGRjcAR4099leHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZAo2NjI4NTY4Mzc5AAEen3MULA4zDkWSmtOlPqLHLpBckqaAsydvy1n_YjV-ywmpypGfFfvBwlxfclY_aem_ZjvM1n2j2ain8LzmSulCIw
