EducationGovernment Can’t Fund Universities Anymore” – FG Declares by ThompsonJoo(op): 10:29am On Jun 15, 2023
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s led Federal Government has announced that the government can no longer bear the financial burden of universities in the country.

OBSERVERSTIMES reports that during a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Permanent Secretary for the Federal Ministry of Education, Andrew David Adejo, emphasised that while universities already enjoy autonomy, they lack financial autonomy.

Adejo explained, “Whether we like it or not, the government can no longer foot the bill for universities. That is why we are pursuing private-public partnerships. The universities already have autonomy; what they lack is financial autonomy. Once they obtain it, they will be able to address this issue, and the government is actively working towards that goal.”

In addition to this development, President Tinubu has instructed relevant stakeholders to ensure the disbursement of student loans by the end of the September/October 2023/2024 Academic Session.

BusinessJUST IN: SEC Bans Binance Operation In Nigeria, Declares It Illegal Entity by ThompsonJoo(op): 9:06am On Jun 10, 2023

Binance Nigeria Limited is neither registered nor regulated by the Commission and its operations in Nigeria are therefore illegal. Any member of the investing public dealing with the entity is doing so at his/her own risk.

As the regulator with the statutory mandate of investor protection, the Commission urges Nigerians to be wary of investing in crypto-assets, and crypto-asset related financial products and services if the service provider/its platform is not registered or regulated by the Commission. Nigerian investors are hereby warned that investing in crypto-assets is extremely risky and may result in total loss of their investment.

By this circular, Binance Nigeria Limited is hereby directed to immediately stop soliciting Nigerian investors in any form whatsoever.

The Commission shall provide updates on further regulatory actions with respect to the activities of Binance Nigeria Limited, and other similar platforms and shall work with other regulators in Nigeria to provide further guidance on this matter.

BusinessUber, Bolt Drivers Begin Nationwide Strike by ThompsonJoo(op): 9:32am On Jun 07, 2023
The Amalgamated Union of App-based Transport Workers of Nigeria, comprising drivers under the platform of e-hailing companies like Uber and Bolt, has said it will commence a nationwide protest today (Wednesday).

It planned to withdraw services of its drivers from the general public today.

After the hike in the price of Premium Motor Spirit, the drivers decried the low fare increase by the ride-hailing transport companies

According to a statement by the union, the increase by the app-based firms stood between 25 to 30 per cent, which was far from the union’s demand for a 200 per cent increase, and a 50 per cent reduction in commission respectively

The drivers, who said they could no longer work under these conditions, noted that they had previously appealed to the companies to reduce their commissions on the ground that they did not reflect industry benchmark commissions.

They urged all app-based workers across the country to be ready to fight the menace until victory was achieved.

The statement read in part, “The union’s technical team is versed with the operation and technicality of ride-hailing companies and on our calculations, any app company can breakeven charging below five per cent even though the union recommended a flat commission of 10 per cent or 50 per cent off their current commission during our last meeting, as we believe this will help us to cope with maintenance costs, spare parts and various overhead cost and the current fuel increase.

We can no longer tolerate any act of dictatorial practices by any app company because we are workers and as an organised union, we have written several letters to these companies for a round table discussion where we can look at various areas of concern and dialogue but they have remained adamant with a deliberate intention to avoid responsibility.

“So, as a result of this insensitivity, the union is directing all its members across the nation to shut down their service on all ride-hailing applications from Wednesday, June 7, 2023, in protest against every dictatorial practice and lack of concern for welfare and security of App-Based Transport workers of Nigeria.”

PoliticsWe Didn’t Devalue Naira – CBN by ThompsonJoo(op): 10:20am On Jun 01, 2023
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has dismissed reports that it devalued the Naira.

Reports had earlier emerged that CBN devalued Naira from N631 to the dollar from N461.60 it sold at the Importers and Exporters (I&E) window the previous day.

However, in a tweet, via its Twitter handle on Thursday morning, CBN simply tweeted: “CBN did not devalue the Naira!”.

The reported devaluation is coming barely 48 hours after President Bola Tinubu announced the plans of the federal government to unify Nigeria’s exchange rate to stimulate the country’s crumbling economy.

Recall that the President had in his inaugural speech said that the “Monetary policy needs a thorough house cleaning.”

Following the development, Tinubu met with the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, at the presidential villa on Tuesday.

It was believed that the issue of the exchange rate and the removal of the petrol subsidy was discussed at the meeting.

PoliticsRaymond Dokpesi Is Dead by ThompsonJoo(op): 4:05pm On May 29, 2023
Raymond Dokpesi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and founder, DAAR Communications plc, has died at the age of 71.

A family member confirmed this to THE WHISTLER on Monday, saying the media mogul died at a hospital in Abuja.

According to the family source who doesn’t want to be mentioned, Dokpesi had suffered a stroke shortly after the recent Ramadan fast and had been managing his health since.

The family source told THE WHISTLER that Dokpesi was eventually placed on occupational therapy to improve his daily activities through walking out at the gym.

The source said during one of his routine gym exercises, Dokpesi was electrocuted while using one of the gym equipment, leading to stroke and his eventual death.

The DDokpesi family is expected to issue a statement on the development soon

In 2020, Raymond Dokpesi and members of his family were hospitalized at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital after they were diagnosed with COVID-19. They, however, survived the disease.

Dokpesi founded the African Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower FM and was the deputy Director-General of technical and systems of Atiku Abubakar’s Presidential Campaign Council.
