No fewer than 20 persons were burnt to death in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Sunday.

It was gathered that the victims were scooping fuel from a petrol tanker that fell and spilled its content along the Benin–Ore-Sagamu Expressway on Sunday.

According to an eyewitness, the fire was ignited by a spark from a phone held by one of the persons who were scooping fuel.

The eyewitness stated that the victims of the disaster included three children and a pregnant woman who brought a sum of N100,000 to the scene to buy fuel.

The eyewitness said, “We were inside the church when the tanker fell and spilled its contents on the road. Shortly after it fell down and spilled the fuel on the road, some persons rushed to the place to scoop fuel.

At that time, the rain was falling. Despite that, people still rushed there and started scooping fuel when the fire started after a spark from a phone.

“At the scene, we have counted about three children and over 15 bodies we can’t identify, and also a pregnant woman that wanted to buy the fuel also died in the incident. They were burnt beyond recognition

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident and described the victims as fuel scoopers.

“They were scooping fuel from a tanker when the fire started. We have commenced an investigation into the matter,” the PPRO stated.

The Katsina State Command of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has received 42 Nigerians being deported for illegal entry into the Republic of Niger en route Europe.

The NIS spokesman, Sunday James, gave the number in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

Mr James said they were deported to Nigeria through the Kongolam Control Post.

He said that the affected Nigerians, between 18 and 35 years, evaded immigration clearance and crossed the border to enter into the Republic of Niger.

The spokesman said that a Federal High Court in Katsina had sentenced 12 out of the 42 Nigerians for illegal entry into the Republic of Niger en route Europe.

“Justice Hadiza Shagari, while ruling in the judgment, directed that the suspects should either pay N50, 000 fine or be remanded in the correctional centre for three months.

“The remaining 30 offenders will soon be docked in court on completion of charges against them, ” NIS Spokesman said.

The Comptroller-General, NIS, Muhammad Babandede, in a reaction to the development, directed that the rest 30 persons be tried without further delay.

The university town of Ekpoma in the Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State was on Thursday evening thrown into panic as a team of policemen with their official vehicle ran over a handcuffed middle-aged man.

In a video that circulated online on Friday, the handcuffed man was seen lying down in front of the police van.

While some people engaged the policemen in a discussion, the driver of the police van drove away in a panic running over the man and dragging him along the road for a few metres.

The incident generated uproar from the crowd, but the angry crowd was quickly dispersed by gunshots from the policemen.


The spokesman of the Edo State Police Command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, in a press statement, said the policemen have been arrested.

The statement read in part: “Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that it is aware of the trending video in the social media that shows some police officers with a Sienna vehicle used for police patrol that ran over a young man who was handcuffed.

“In light of the above, CP Mohammed Adamu Dankwara has condemned the action of the policemen that he saw in the trending video, and he described their action as barbaric, inhumane, and unprofessional.

“He therefore gave a marching order to the Divisional Police Officer, Ekpoma to identify, arrest, and bring to the State Police Headquarters Benin for brief and debrief. The officers have been arrested, and they are with the State Criminal Investigation Department.”

During a press conference, the National Vice President of NANS conveyed that the university raised its fees without consulting the student union's leadership or considering the prevailing national circumstances.

Moreover, she criticized the institution for employing students as a source of internal revenue generation, utilizing their tuition fees solely for staff salaries while disregarding student welfare.

Furthermore, it has been revealed that the hostel accommodation fees were increased in the previous term, citing impending renovations. However, no renovations have been initiated, let alone completed.

She urged the management, under the Freedom of Information Act, to provide a comprehensive breakdown of how the previous fee increment was utilized, warning that any further attempts to raise fees would be met with resistance.

The President of the Forum of Former Students Union Leaders [FOFSUL] reiterated that they had sent letters to the Acting Vice Chancellor on three separate occasions to initiate negotiations. Regrettably, these appeals were dismissed, with the Vice Chancellor branding them as meddlesome interlopers masquerading as stakeholders.

He also reminded the government of Edo state that they trusted his assurance regarding the establishment of a governing council and the dissolution of the SIT, emphasizing that more than 107 days have passed since the promise was made.

The candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 governorship election in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, on Thursday, accused the Deputy Governor of the State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, of renouncing his Nigerian citizenship when he acquired the American passport.

Rhodes-Vivour made the allegation through one of his expert witnesses at the Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in the Ikeja area of the state.

The witness, Mrs. Olubusayo Fasidi, who claimed to be a United States Immigration lawyer, told the Tribunal that Hamzat swore an oath of allegiance to the U.S., renouncing his Nigerian citizenship.

Fasidi, led in evidence by Dr Olumide Ayeni (SAN), counsel to the petitioner, also testified that the deputy governor applied for naturalisation as contained in Forms 8CFR/337 and N400.

Ayeni tendered the documents to the three-member Tribunal led by Justice Arum Ashom.

However, counsel to all the Respondents objected to the move, saying that the reason for their objection would be included in their final written addresses

Other Tribunal members are Justice Mikail Abdullahi and Justice L. P. Braimoh.

During cross-examination by the lawyer to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Eric Ogiegor, the witness admitted that an individual could enjoy dual citizenship.

She, however, said that she was not aware of the provision of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution that deal with dual citizenship.

Other Tribunal members are Justice Mikail Abdullahi and Justice L. P. Braimoh.

Fasidi said she was subpoenaed before the Tribunal to explain U.S. law and not Nigeria’s Constitution.

When the counsel to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat, Bode Olanipekun (SAN), asked her to disclose the jurisdiction and date Hamzat applied for naturalisation, she said she would not because the information was protected by the Privacy Act of 1974.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) counsel, Norris Quakers, asked the witness if she knew whether Hamzat disclosed his American citizenship, and she answered in the affirmative.

Earlier, Ayeni presented result sheets from polling units in nine local government areas of the state to establish differences in some regions against what was recorded on INEC’s Form EC 40A.

Counsel to INEC, Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat and APC objected to the admissibility of Form EC 40A, reserving reasons until their final written addresses.

The Tribunal has adjourned the matter to June 26 for further hearing.
