The Atiku Media Office has said that attempts by the Presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to drag former Vice President Atiku Abubakar into a forgery scandal is a calculated move to downplay the allegations against President Bola Tinubu. Atiku’s Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, in a statement issued Sunday said Tinubu and his handlers should desist from making any further attempts to compare the President and Atiku. He insisted that the all the names that Atiku bears are names that are traceable to his family tree. Ibe noted: “Contrary to Bola A. Tinubu’s forgery shopping allegation against Atiku, it is on record that the change of name of the former Vice President reverting to Atiku Abubakar from Siddiq Abubakar is well documented in an affidavit dated 18th of August 1973, spanning over a period of 50 years, (which incidentally is as old as the commencement of Tinubu’s life of forgeries and lies), is in the public domain.” He alleged that Tinubu has forged and lied about every aspect of his life, including his heritage, name and date of birth, as well as education, certificates, and work experience. Ibe added that the exposure of Tinubu’s records at Chicago State University and the court ordered deposition in the United States is only a tip of the iceberg. He added: “The attempt by Bola A. Tinubu to drag Atiku Abubakar into his drowning arena of forgery must be seen for what it is: an attempt to minimise the allegations of forgeries that he has to contend with.” Ibe claimed that it has been established that Tinubu secured admission into the university by impersonation. He added, “Curiously, handlers of this same Bola A. Tinubu have smuggled Adekunle, a middle name that magically popped up in his so-called National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate into his Wikipedia on the 6th of October, 2023. “This may yet be another indication of a master forger at work.” https://.ng/2023/10/15/my-change-of-name-from-siddiq-to-atiku-abubakar-well-documented-ex-vp/

A 40-year-old father of 20 children who is being questioned for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl has blamed his victim for the assault. Muhammed Umar, who admitted that he had sex with the minor, insisted that she lured him and that she did not cry during or after the act. Umar, who hails from Gusupan, Toungo Local Government Area of Adamawa State, told the Police: “She met me in my shop and said she wanted to buy sugar. She requested N2,000 to refund her stepmother. I dashed her N1,000, and she subsequently agreed to offer her body to me. “She went by herself to where we met without anybody forcing her. I later followed her to the place and had sex with her.” Adamawa State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, who provided the details to newsmen in Yola, said the suspect stressed that the minor “did not complain, not to talk of crying.” He even claimed that the minor had been enticing him and that this time, “I couldn’t resist the temptation.” The suspect, who had married four wives and divorced two, said he was willing to take the minor as wife if her father would agree. On her part, the victim vehemently accused the suspect of raping her, narrating that her father sent her on an errand on that fateful day to buy sugar and that while at the shop, the suspect sent her to bring a kettle for him from the house. “I went and didn’t see the kettle, but while I was returning, he stopped me and dragged me into a nearby room, and raped me,” she said. She added that he held her by the neck during the act and threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the incident. “He told me that last year he had an issue with my father and were yet to come to terms,” she said. The suspect, according to Nguroje, was apprehended by the operatives of the Adamawa State Police Command on Wednesday, October 11, after a complaint from the girl’s father. https://.ng/2023/10/15/she-seduced-me-father-of-20-who-raped-12-year-old-girl/

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ajibola Basiru has boasted that the party is getting set to take over power in Osun State, come 2026. Basiru gave this insight during an address to APC members at a meeting in Osogbo on Friday. While encouraging the Osun APC members to commence mobilising ahead of the 2026 gubernatorial election, Basiru chided the state governor, Ademola Adeleke for not being truthful with urban renewal projects. “The much-mouthed borehole per ward is a fluke. Any Government built on lies and propaganda is bound to crumble,” he said. While sympathising with workers in the State for the alleged hardship they were subjected to, the APC national scribe queried the use of the first tranche of N2b palliative fund from the Federal Government. “I sympathize with Osun workers for being subjected to more hardship. What has Adeleke done with the first tranche of N2b from the Federal Government when states such as Kwara, Ekiti, Ogun, Lagos, Imo, Anambra Kano and even Kebbi with war-ravaged Borno have made workers smile in addition to their salaries? “Has any Osun worker got as little as a cup from bags of rice Osun PDP got from the Federal Government? Allocation from the Federal Government to Osun has hugely increased. It is regrettable however that the increment has reflected neither in workers’ welfare nor tangible projects for the people,” he claimed. Reacting, the Osun Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in a statement by its party chairman, Sunday Bisi advised Basiru to cease entertaining illusions of his party’s return to governance in the state. Bisi also labeled the statement credited to the APC National Secretary as a fallacious illusion that is far from reality in Osun now or in any foreseeable future. He said, “Basiru’s statement overlooks the commendable progress and positive transformations in Osun State under Governor Adeleke’s administration, after the good people of Osun emphatically discarded him and his useless tissues of political misfits, whose sole business was to loot and destroy the state. “It is evident that Basiru is still reeling from the shock of his rejection in the elections. His recent statement only reaffirms his current state of heartache, ensnaring him in a colorless dream. “Basiru’s assertions regarding APC’s resurgence to power in 2026 revealed his deficiency in grasping with the current state of affairs in Osun. His disregard for the ongoing positive transformations in the state further highlights his detachment from the needs and aspirations of the populace. “In sane climes, Basiru has no business in governance as all he dreams was to use political office as a tool of oppression and garrulous showoffs. That is why his assertions are often off-track, self-serving, and patently irrational. “The Governor has taken the initiative in keeping the public well-informed about the workings of the government as required in a democratic setting. Funds are being judiciously utilized for the good of the people contrary to the ego massaging administration of APC. Osun people are the kings of democracy and that pride of place remains non-negotiable.” The Osun PDP chairman also accused Basiru of employing the politics of poverty in order to keep the people down to his apron of oppression. https://.ng/2023/10/14/osun-2026-apc-national-secretary-basiru-pdp-trade-words/

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Osun State has announced the demise of the Caretaker Committee Chairman for Ede North Local Government, Jimoh Oyekanmi. The Osun PDP in a statement signed by its Chairman, Sunday Bisi disclosed that the council boss died suddenly on Tuesday. The party has also declared a 3-day mourning period and suspension of party activities. Lamenting the sudden passage of Oyekanmi, Bisi described him as a willing and tenacious team player who never got tired of executing tasks placed in his care. “The Osun State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party is saddened to announce the death of the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ede North local government, whose sudden death occurred late on Tuesday, 10th of October 2023. “The PDP finds it awkward to come to terms with the death of the chairman, who was in his office and was full of life till the wee hours of the day. It was really awkward for us as a family with the party having to submit to the unquestionable will of Almighty Allah, who giveth and taketh. “Jimoh Oyekanmi without mincing words, was one engine room too many to lose. He was a willing and tenacious team player who never got tired of executing tasks placed in his care. “While we battle through this rude shock of Alhaji Oyekanmi’s demise, the state working committee of our party, under the leadership of Hon Sunday Bisi hereby suspends all party activities for the next three days with party flags in the state flown at half mast in equal number of days,” the party said. Mourning the deceased council boss, the Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke described it as devastating. Adeleke also stated that the state had been denied the service of a trusted hand in delivering good governance. According to the governor in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, “Alhaji Jimoh was a politician with a purpose, always prioritizing the good of all above his personal interest in every situation. During the struggle for the enthronement of the Imole government, Alhaji Jimoh showed discipline and unimaginable sacrifices. “He was a long-time member of the Adeleke political dynasty, but he was much more than that to me. He was loyal to a fault and more reliable, no matter the circumstances. “His impact on Osun politics, particularly in Ede North, where he was a strong grassroot mobilizer for our great party, the PDP, is hard to miss. Ede town, and the PDP, has lost one of its finest, and I mourn this huge loss of a man who has contributed so much to the society. “My heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, the people of Ede North, the PDP family, and everyone touched by his demise. It is my prayer that Almighty Allah comforts his family and loved ones and gives them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.” https://.ng/2023/10/12/adeleke-osun-pdp-mourn-late-council-boss-jimoh/

As the nation gears up for the off-season elections in Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi States, Nigerians have expressed doubts over the integrity of the electoral process in the concerned states. The development followed the announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, recently that it plans to manually transmit the results of the forthcoming November 11 Bayelsa governorship election. .ng quoted the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, which reported that the State INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Mr Obo Effanga, disclosed the commission’s decision in Yenagoa during an interactive meeting with religious leaders and faith-based organisations. The REC, Effanga, during the interactive meeting also said that INEC was ready to conduct free, fair and credible elections and only voters accredited by BVAS would be allowed to vote. “Immediately you are given the ballot paper you can start voting. “We are in the fourth week of collection of PVCs and it will end on Oct. 11. Those who have not collected their cards should go to the INEC office in their local government areas,” he said. The Commission’s decision has not gone down well with many Nigerians who have also described it as a serious setback. .ng recalls that before now, the INEC successfully deployed the BVAS and adopted electronic transmission of election results in Ekiti, Osun and Anambra States, which many described as the game changer. The success of application of technology in those elections contributed largely to the passage of the Electoral Act 2023. Also, before the 2023 general elections, the electoral commission promised and assured Nigerians it would transmit the result electronically. But the promise never came to pass during the presidential election. Notwithstanding, recent court judgements have shown that the commission is at liberty to prescribe or choose the manner in which election results shall be transmitted. .ng reported that the Court of Appeal, Lagos division, recently voided a Federal High Court decision that mandated INEC to electronically upload results of the governorship and State of Assembly elections from the polling units directly to the Results Viewing Portal (IReV). The judgement, delivered by a three-man panel, comprising Justice Abubakar Umar, Justice Olukayode Bada and Justice Onyekachi Otisi, held that the law gave INEC very wide discretionary powers to determine how it transmits or transfers election results. However, the debate over the electronic transmission of election results is not yet over as it forms part of the petitions by the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Labour Party, LP, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, respectively, which is currently under litigation in the Supreme Court. According to Atiku and Obi, the INEC contravened provisions of the amended Electoral Act by failing to electronically transmit the results of the election, even after receiving over N355 billion for the conduct of the 2023 presidential poll. Both candidates equally faulted INEC’s claim that technical glitches were responsible for the inability to upload results on the INEC Result Viewing, IReV, portal. Meanwhile, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Center, CSLAC, has faulted the INEC’s plan to transmit the November 11 Guber election manually. The group said it was a desperate attempt to allow politicians to manipulate the will of the electorate during the election. The group further said it believed the integrity and credibility of any election depended on the transparency of the electoral process, including the accurate and timely transmission of results. While speaking on Arise Television’s News programme on Monday, the Executive Director of CSLAC, Auwal Rafsanjan said the development was a huge concern for anybody who loves the country’s democracy to succeed. Rafsanjani was of the view that ‘‘whoever is behind this attempt to return us to analogue voting, it’s simply clear they didn’t wish for us to have transparent, free, fair and credible elections.’’ He insisted that the electoral body and the government should rise up to the challenge of concern from Nigerians and even the international community over a few hungry elements who wanted to capture power for their own self-centred interest. According to him, the Nigerian government spent a huge amount of billions of naira to deploy technology in its electoral process and people have seen the value of using technology in the electoral process. He said, ‘‘This is a huge concern for anybody who loves this country’s democracy to succeed. The sustainability of democracy in Nigeria lies in free, fair and credible elections. “And if people in authority are using their powers to undermine free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria, it’s invariably undermining democracy. “Incidentally, they are the greatest beneficiary of democratic dividend because many Nigerians are still struggling to survive; they have not seen the dividend of democracy because democracy has been hijacked by those who do not wish to have credible elections in this country. ‘‘Therefore, they are doing everything possible to undermine any transparent process that will enable Nigerians to actually have confidence in our electoral system. “For example, the Nigerian government spent a huge amount of billions of naira to deploy technology in our electoral process. And we have seen the value of using technology in our electoral process. ‘‘Now suddenly, certain people who are desperate to capture power, not through the regular vote but through manipulation and rigging, now start by making desperate efforts that all the billions of naira we have spent to deploy technology are wasted. ‘‘If somebody now is trying to draw us back after a huge success that we have made to ensure that we minimise rigging and double voting, and now want us to come back and do manual election, I think it’s a very clear message that those people didn’t wish Nigerians to have a solid democracy; didn’t wish Nigerians to have a free, fair and credible election; did not wish Nigerians to participate in the electoral process in the country. ‘‘As a result of fraudulent election and electoral violence which are occasioned by these manipulations by some desperate politicians and their allies in other governmental agencies, we are not able to have the needed democracy or the needed stabilisation in the electoral process. ‘‘It took civil society organisations, particularly transition monitoring groups to mobilise Nigerians, to assure them of what INEC has promised the nation that they are going to organise free, fair and credible elections using technology to eliminate multiple voting and ensure electronic transmission of results. “At the end of the day, we are now seeing what desperate politicians, desperate government officials are doing, wasting public tax payers money to come back to an analogue process which is easy for them to manipulate and hijack the process. ‘‘So I think whoever is behind this attempt to return us to analogue voting, it’s simply clear they didn’t wish for us to have transparent, free, fair and credible elections. “And that means many Nigerians will be alienated from participating because Nigerians are already disenchanted, they feel that they are not getting what the country promised to do in order to ensure free, fair and credible elections. ‘‘The electoral body and the government must rise up to the challenge of concern from Nigerians and even the international community. We cannot invest this much and come back to analogue because of a few hungry elements who want to capture power for their own self-centred interest.’’ Similarly, a coalition of pro-democracy civil society groups in Nigeria have also rejected the proposal to manually collate results. The groups noted that electronic transmission of election results is vital to ensuring the authenticity and fairness of elections, calling on the INEC to ensure accurate and timely election results and transparency in the conduct of the November 11 governorship election in Bayelsa State. They made their position known in a communique jointly signed by the National Secretary of the Campaign for Democracy (CD), Olufemi Lawson and Atani John of the Niger Delta Democratic Vanguard, after a meeting in Abuja. According to the civil groups, the integrity and credibility of any election depend on the transparency of the electoral process, including the accurate and timely transmission of results. The coalition said, “Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has on Wednesday stated it plans to transmit results of the November 11 Bayelsa governorship election manually. This was made known through the State’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Obo Effanga. “Electronic transmission of results is a vital component of ensuring the authenticity and fairness of elections, and its abandonment would undermine the trust of the electorate, Nigerians and the international community in the electoral process. “The use of technology in the transmission of election results has proven to be a valuable tool in reducing electoral fraud, promoting accountability, and delivering more accurate and timely results to the public. It enhances the transparency of the electoral process and minimises the potential for manipulation or tampering with results at various stages. “We urge the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to reconsider its proposal and uphold the principles of transparency and accountability in the Bayelsa State Governorship Election. “We call on INEC to ensure that the electronic transmission of results is maintained and improved upon to guarantee the credibility of the electoral process. Another civil group, Good Governance Advocacy Group (GGAG), also expressed concern over the development. GGAG, in a statement signed by its Coordinator, Godwin Ebiware, said it was surprising that the INEC’s Commissioner did not give reasons why the commission would collate results manually. “The Federal Government spent billions of naira to secure the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) but out of a hidden agenda by the political parties in Bayelsa, in connivance with the Independent National Electoral Commission, it has decided to abandon the electronic transmission of the November 11 election results in real-time,” Ebiware said. Speaking to newsmen in an interview concerning the development, the spokesperson for the Forum of State Chairmen of the NNPP, Dada Olayinka Olabode described the INEC’s decision as an attempt to put wool over the eyes of the Nigerians. Olabode stated there could not be any excuse for INEC under Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, having spent humongous billions of naira to prepare for an aspect of the electoral system that citizens advocated for and the National Assembly legislated on. He urgedNigerians to advocate that INEC sit up and rescind the decision and transmit the result of the Bayelsa guber election and other staggered elections in Imo and Kogi real time. He said, ‘‘Every election, everywhere in the world, the most important aspect of it all is the credibility of the process. “Election starts with the processes, the conducts, the logistics, staff and ultimately the collation of the result of any election. “There can be no election without the people. It is the people that make that choice of whoever they want as their leader. Therefore, the most significant interest in all of these should be the people’s interest. ‘‘It will definitely dampen the spirit of the people when INEC has invested so much in procuring technology that could transmit the result of an election in real time and they are now jettisoning that for the same manual process that was fraught with so many irregularities, complaints and litigations in the past. ‘‘Why did we have to waste the taxpayers’ money to procure these technologies that would have saved us the arguments of irregularities and also litigations that cost so much money and bring bad blood into our communities and societies as a result of non credible conduct of elections? ‘‘There cannot be any excuse for INEC under Prof Mahmood Yakubu having spent humongous billions of naira to prepare for these credible aspects of our electoral system. ‘‘The last general election in 2023, you will recall that one of the major angers by Nigerians was the fact that election results were not transmitted. And what was the excuse from the INEC? INEC said they had glitches. ‘‘Now we are going into stargard elections in the States, are those glitches not resolved by now? This is not encouraging at all. “I will advise that whatever makes the INEC not to be able to transmit results of elections electronically in real time so that citizens will monitor results as it leaves their polling unit – election are conducted at the polling unit – whatever makes citizens not to be able to monitor results emanating from their polling unit real time have taken away the credibility of that election.” On his part, Yunusa Tanko, one of the spokespersons for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council (LP-PCC) told newsmen that his party will follow the rule of law and ensure that the right thing is done for the people. Tanko said the INEC now resorting back to the old way means there may be another issue in the process, describing it as totally unacceptable. ‘‘We may have to challenge that particular position because one of the things the Electoral Act did was to eliminate this particular manual transmission to give credence to the election. “And if the INEC is now resorting back to the old way, then that means there may be another issue in this particular process, which is totally unacceptable. ‘‘You know we are still challenging that particular situation in the Supreme Court. ‘‘What we do normally is that when we feel that our right has been trampled upon, we will go to the court and challenge certain things that we know are wrongly being done. “And some of the problems we had with the INEC were the processes or ways in which they handled the election, having promised Nigerians that they would do justice and fairness to every of the actions that they promised Nigerians. Unfortunately, they did not live to their promise. ‘‘Therefore, as far as we are concerned, as democrats, we will follow the rule of law and order. We will follow the right proceeding and ensure that the right thing is done for the people.’’ https://.ng/2023/10/11/bayelsa-guber-inec-integrity-under-scrutiny-over-choice-of-manual-transmission/

In collaboration with the ministry and Julius Berger, five suspects were arrested who specialised in stealing iron grills and drainage covers on the bridge. “Based on their confession, we moved in and arrested three people who bought the irons from them.” The commissioner while speaking on the arrest of cultists lamented the spate of cult-related killings in Awka especially. “It was a major cause for concern and people felt unsafe, but we reassured them. We went to work, and within a week, 34 cult suspects were arrested and charged to court, and the judiciary remanded all of them to prison custody. “We also tracked one of the most serious killers and arrested him in his hideout in Enugu. He said his gang had killed four in the last six months, ” he said. In total, the commissioner paraded 129 suspects, while 26 firearms, 93 ammunition, 25 vehicles, 14 tricycles and seven motorcycles were received. The All Progressives Congress, APC in Osun State has accused the state governor, Ademola Adeleke of comfortably holding a programme while innocent lives were being cut down in the lingering communal clash between the Ifon and Ilobu communities. The Osun APC also warned the state governor to desist from embarrassing the people of the state through his actions and inactions. In a statement by the Osun APC Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal in Osogbo on Friday, the party maintained that the manner the Ipade Imole programme was handled on Thursday was crude. The party also claimed that the conduct of Governor Adeleke revealed that he is ill-prepared and lacks the natural endowments required to successfully govern the state. “Governor Ademola Adeleke lacks empathy. I wonder why the governor was seemingly comfortable holding such a programme amidst singing and cracking of jokes while the lives of innocent souls were being cut short in the lingering communal clash between the people of Ifon-Osun and Ilobu about five kilometres away from the venue. “The time-wasting Ipade Imole which ran for several hours where Adeleke talked much without substance afforded the people of the state a golden opportunity to discover that the governor is not only an expert in dancing but he is an unrivalled political comedian who trivializes serious matters affecting the state for lack of not knowing what to do, how to do it and when to do same. “I also observed that apart from the fact that Adeleke was superfluous and empty yesterday, the whole exercise turned out to be a tirade whereby the governor was openly demanding to be clapped for by his burdened and embarrassed audience.” Hitting back, the Osun Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Chairman, Sunday Bisi described the current state of the opposition party as not only painful but shameful. Bisi also advised the Osun APC Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal to desist from constantly embarrassing the state with his rudderless opinion about governance. “Governor Adeleke’s remarks at the meeting on the communal crisis in the Ifon-Ilobu area shed light on the depth of concern he holds for the affected communities. He immediately called a meeting with the two communities. “His empathy and visible commitment to addressing the concerns of the people have struck a chord with those looking for genuine and compassionate leadership. “This level of compassion, understanding and action should be expected from political leaders. However, it appears that the APC Chairman consistently falls short, disregarding the gravity of such issues and indulging in a brash display of politics devoid of shame. “The actions and statements emerging from APC have constantly shown why the Osun people rejected them across the state. “Despite being a dominant force in the state for 12 years, APC’s inability to adapt to a role outside of power has drawn scrutiny. This transition from governance to opposition seems to have left the APC struggling to effectively engage with the public. Thereby amplifying their rudderless nature” “It is embarrassing that a party with a history of leading the state has not effectively played its role as a constructive opposition. Attempting to talk about public engagement after a prolonged period of governing in secrecy only amplifies this embarrassment.” https://.ng/2023/10/07/holding-ipade-imole-during-communal-clash-shows-adeleke-lacks-empathy-osun-apc/

Singer, Davido’s logistics manager, Israel Afeare, aka Israel DMW, has recounted his fortunate experience in the hands of kidnappers some years ago. According to the Edo-born social media sensation, he was kidnapped in 2001 alongside three others after boarding a vehicle heading to Ibadan from Lagos. He said their abductors, whom he claimed were ritualists, took them to a forest midway into the journey for ritual, but that fortunately for him, he was released and given a transportation fare to leave. Israel claimed their abductors released only him because they said he was “a very bad market.” He made this known via his Instagram story on Wednesday while celebrating his birthday anniversary. He wrote, “Four of us were kidnapped for rituals in 2001, on our way from Lagos to Ibadan, after entering a vehicle. “They took us to a very thick forest. I was the only one allowed to go, saying I was a very bad market. They gave me N200 to add to the already 40 naira with me for transportation. I just give glory to God Almighty.” https://.ng/2023/10/05/how-kidnappers-freed-gave-me-transport-fare-israel-dmw/

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Abdullahi Ganduje has reacted to demolitions carried out by the State Governor, Yusuf Abba. According to the immediate past Governor of the State, sanity would return to the Kano business community when the APC regains control of the state. Recall that the State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal had recently sacked the sitting Governor and declared the APC candidate, Nasir Gawuna, winner of the March 18 governorship election. Ganduje gave the reassurance when he received a delegation of Kano market youth leaders in his office at the party’s secretariat on Tuesday, He said: “It is unfortunate for the other issue that you raised. The issue of senseless demolition was unfortunate. That was very unfortunate. They destroyed the economy of Kano. They destroyed business and trading in Kano. “Many people are now sceptical about going to Kano for business. Even banks don’t accept certificates of occupancy, because they are not sure whether the certificate will be revoked tomorrow. Or even when you build, it will be demolished. “You can see the extent of demolition of businesses in Kano. It is very unfortunate. But I have to congratulate you for taking the right steps. People who lost their property in Kano have taken the issue to court. And the court has already started giving verdicts for compensation. It is just the starting point for the people who take them to court. The answer to Kano politics is for the return of the APC and we are pursuing that.” Earlier in his speech, Chairman of the market leaders, Umar Ladiyo, recalled the untold hardship suffered by the business community in the last four months. “With the outgoing government in Kano, everybody knows what happened was a tragedy. The destruction of properties, businesses and many people have been thrown into crises. Some even lost their lives. “The amount of money lost in Kano during the destruction was huge. The turnover that is being done is more than N2bn every day. Sadly, we have lost all that now,” he stated. https://.ng/2023/10/04/senseless-ganduje-reacts-to-demolition-of-markets-by-kano-government/

BUA Group, on Sunday, announced a reduction in the price of cement from N5,000 per bag to N3,500. The development, .ng observed, is already heightening a price war in the building materials and infrastructure industry. The Nigerian cement market had been dominated by Dangote, BUA Group and Lafarge, respectively. .ng reports that BUA Group’s decision sent a shock wave to the building material and infrastructure industry. The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, had raised the alarm over the high cost of cement in Nigeria compared to other parts of the continent. Meanwhile, more than 24 hours after the BUA price reduction announcement, its major competitor, Dangote cement, has kept mum. When newsmen contacted the spokesperson for Dangote Group, Anthony Chiejine, on Monday, he did not say a word on the development. It could, however, be recalled that earlier, Chiejine denied claims that circulated on social media a week ago that the price of Dangote cement price was reduced to N2,700 per bag. Similarly, Lafarge cement, a major actor in the building materials market, is yet to react to the cut in price by BUA cement. However, a survey of cement sellers- wholesalers and retailers in Abuja showed that the new price change by BUA is yet to be effected. In Dawaki, an area near Gwarinpa, Eze Onyekachi said his 50kg BUA cement price has remained at N5,000. He said, “The price reduction for me is a media thing; as of today (Monday), we still buy at the same depot price and sell for N5000 per 50kg bag. I am saying come back here in a week; the price may remain the same. “Several persons have called me on the price reduction thing for BUA cement, but we are yet to see it being effected.” Abdul Adamu, a dealer, who plies his trade in Gwarinpa said he has yet to change his stock; hence, he still sells at the old price of N5,000 per 50kg bag. “We are yet to get new stock at the moment; for now, we still sell at N5000 per bag”, he said. The development has received both knocks and kudos. Speaking with newsmen on Monday, Wumi Iledare, a Professor Emeritus in Petroleum Economics and Executive Director of Emmanuel Egbogah Foundation, stated that the situation may be relieving in the short run. “That one seller in a market can single-handedly determine the cement price is worrisome. It shows the market is anti-competitive, and regulators must be watchful of such behaviour. “To consumers of the product, cement, in this case, may seem very relieving in the short run. “However, if it is a dominant cement firm, such a seller may drive others out of the cement market in the long run. Other than that, reducing the price of any raw material for productivity activity is good”, he said. On his part, Kunle Olubiyo, the President of Nigeria Consumer Protection Network said the BUA cement price review would help reduce the 20 million housing deficit in Nigeria. “The recent price war in the Cement Sub Sector is a welcome development in the spirit of market competition. “It is also good for the public, the off-takers and end users customers of the products. “You recall that the Federal Government has recently demonstrated her interest in the deployment of cement materials in the construction of roads where cement is considered more valuable and appropriate, taking into consideration the divergence in climatic conditions of different parts of Nigeria where the use of bitumen may not be most suitable. “This development, apart from reducing the cost of construction of road, housing and other products that require cement as feedstock, will help in reducing the housing deficits in Nigeria, create jobs, create wealth while at the same time bring about peace as the productive energy of idle youths population would be productively and constructively engaged”, he stated. Also, Prof Godwin Oyedokun, President of the Association of Forensic Accounting Researchers said the development may lead to a price war and force other producers to reduce their prices to remain competitive. “I can say that when one producer slashes its product prices, it may affect other producers in different ways depending on various factors such as the competition level, market size, product differentiation, and the availability of substitutes. “In some cases, price slashing may lead to a price war and force other producers to reduce their prices to remain competitive, decreasing profit margins. “On the other hand, it can also stimulate demand for the product and increase overall market size and revenue. “Ultimately, the effect of price slashing will depend on many factors and the specific circumstances of the market. “Sure, I know competitors will respond to this. I pray it brings a positive multiplier effect on the economy”, he said. But, Bode Fadipe, a Global Power and Energy analyst, said that the reduction of BUA cement price is cosmetic and transient unless there is a corresponding review of other parameters required in the building industry. “The recent reduction in cement price is cosmetic and transient unless a corresponding review of other parameters is required in the building industry. “Cement is not the only item required to build a house. What is the cost of land and labour today? What about others like road, sand, wood, etc, which are composite? “Will their cost also go down? Dangote and BUA are not just relations; they are businessmen. That Dangote has kept mum does not mean he won’t respond. Businessmen are very strategic people. They do everything to protect their business interest. “What BUA has done is a sustainability strategy. I won’t be surprised to see a return to the old price because the macro and micro-economic indicators are major suspects.” Idakolo Gbolade, Chief Executive Officer of SD & D Capital Management said the development may push BUA’s major competitors to cut cement prices. He urged the government to provide opportunities for more competition in the cement industry. “The recent announcement by BUA cement of a slash in the price of cement is a welcome development, and it shows that if more Nigerians are patriotic, we can start witnessing the change we desire. “We expect that Dangote cement also needs to follow suit. This is the beauty of competition as against monopoly. I want the Nigerian government to give opportunities to more competition in our business space, as it has shown we can gain more by creating such an enabling environment. “Cement is a major component in the building sector, and a reduction in its price will go a long way in reducing the cost of building and affect inflation positively,” he said. https://.ng/2023/10/03/cement-price-mixed-reactions-as-bua-group-crashes-price-by-30-per-cent/

The recent hike in school fees of some schools across the country, particularly the increment by the federal universities, has continued to attract the ire and condemnation of Nigerians, especially parents and students. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, the umbrella body of teachers in the universities has also added its voice to the growing concerns, warning that if the trend was not reversed and adequately addressed, it would lead to mass dropout of students from the universities in the next two years. The ASUU president, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, who handed down the warning, predicted that between 40 and 50 percent of students in the universities would definitely drop out of school in the next two years if the trend was allowed to continue. The university don lamented that the people’s standard of living is at its lowest ebb following the high cost of living as a result of continued downward slope in the value of the naira against the dollar and other foreign currencies, and instead of finding a way to improve the living condition of the people, the university authorities are adding to the people’s pain and misery. He said: “Today, universities are arbitrarily increasing tuition fees. Is that correct in an environment, where the minimum wage is N30,000 per month, and where they have to pay rent and pay heavily for transportation? And you are enforcing this thing on the students? “As a result of this, I can assure you that if nothing is done about this heavy fee being introduced all over the country today, in the next two or three years, more than 40 to 50 per cent of the students who are in school will drop out. “If you say school fees of N300,000, how can the children of somebody who earns N50,000 a month be able to pay such fee?” He condemned the government attitude to education funding, even as he urged the federal government to increase its education budget from the paltry 3.8 percent in 2022 to about 15 percent of the overall budget sum if the government is serious about developing education in Nigeria. This, he said, would not only contribute to education development, and by extension to the overall development and growth of the country’s economy, but also relieve parents of the strain of paying expensive fees for their children. Many public colleges and universities have raised tuition fees in recent months to reflect what they called the current country’s economic realities in the country. At the last count, no fewer than three federal universities have announced an increment in their schools fees, forcing students to respond with peaceful protest. On September 12, students of the University of Jos, Plateau State, took to the streets to protest what they called an outrageous increase in their school fees. The placard-bearing students had stormed the streets of the Tin City State to reject a 300 percent increase in their school fees. According to the students, the school had, in 2017, increased its fees from N27, 000 to N45, 000; an increment that was collectively agreed upon by both the university authorities and the students/parents through negotiation. They lamented that barely five years after that agreement was reached, the university authorities woke up this current session to announce a 300 percent increase, forcing the 100 and 200-level students to pay a whopping N213,000, and N160,000 for the 300-level students, respectively. Recall that similar protests had earlier rocked the University of Nigeria Nsukka, and the University of Lagos, where similar arbitrary increments were pronounced by the university authorities. According to reports, the UNN recently increased the school fees for the 100-level and 200-level students, despite protests by students on December 1, 2022, when fees were raised by 100 percent for the 2021/2022 academic session. The recent increment raised the fees from the old N45,000 for returning students to between N85,000 and N95,000, depending on the course and faculty. It was also reported that after the students’ protest, there was a deduction of N10,000, bringing it to between N74,000 and N75,000 respectively for old students, while new students are required to pay between N114,650 and N120,650, respectively. Going by the latest increment, a returning student in the school is expected to pay about 90,750, depending on the faculty and department. Even with the reduction in the school fees following students’ demonstrations as can be seen in UNILAG, Prof Osodeke is concerned that parents/guardians may find it difficult to pay the new fees. However, many believe that the recent increment in school fees by some universities is not unconnected with the recent subsidy removal in education and the introduction of students’ loan. Those who hold this opinion argued that although the constant increment in school by federal universities has been there, they became more prevalent a few months after the Students’ Loan Act was signed into law by President Tinubu on June 12, 2023. The law stipulates that students can fund their education through the loan and repay within two years after completing their National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) programme. But the ASUU president does not believe that the students’ loan would change anything. He expressed fear that the loan scheme would fail. He stressed that if the scheme must be effective, then the lending policy must be examined. Prof Osodeke is not alone in his world of scepticism about the students’ loan scheme as many students have also continued to express similar fear, insisting that the loan would not work due to the high unemployment rate in the country. But, tertiary institutions have remained adamant and unperturbed as they have continued to increase the school fees. They do so in the firm belief that with the students’ loans, no student would drop out of school. But, students are saying that even if they would be able to repay the loans after school, accessing the loans is very tasking. A student from the Department of English and Literary Studies, Lagos State University, Ojo, James Okunade, lamented that the conditions for the approval of the loan were unbearable. “The process is overly rigid. If one manages to obtain the loan and then struggles to complete his or course of study, finding a job within the stipulated time becomes a big problem. “Again, depending on loans as a student could mean graduating not just with a degree but also with a debt certificate. In addition to this particular loan, many students take out other loans just to access education, leaving them with both degrees and debts. “So, both the government and the school authorities should recognize the fact that these approaches are ineffective. Nigeria has not yet reached that level. I’ve heard that Unilag has reduced its school fees. I urge other institutions to follow suit. If the government truly wants this country to progress, they should prioritise education,” he stated. Decrying the development, a 200-level mass communication student in Unilag, Mary Ayodele narrated how she struggled to pay her school fees for the 2021/22 academic session, lamenting that she couldn’t register her courses. She added that it had a serious negative effect on her final results as she lacked concentration when she wrote exams for the courses she did not register before the exams. She expressed doubt about her ability to pay the current school fees. “The school fees were supposed to be N74,000, but they later increased it to N90,750. It will be hard. I haven’t told my dad the actual amount we’re meant to pay now, but I know it won’t be easy. He might get furious and stop funding my education,” she stated Checks by .ng revealed that Miss Ayodele is not alone as many students face the same dilemma. The protest in UNILAG was not only against the increment of school fees, but also against what they called police indiscriminate arrests to prevent disorder in the school environment. According to a report on September 6, teargas canisters were fired at the protesting students. They protested again on September 13. The school authorities later cited reasons for the fee increment, and insisted that there would be no further reduction after it recently reduced the fees following a collective agreement with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). Speaking on the development, the president of the Mass Communication Students’ Association, (MACSA), Unilag, Samson Soremekun, said: “The reason for the protests is obvious. Many students attend federal universities, not just for the quality but also because the fees are moderate and within the reach of average parents. “Today, most parents can’t afford the fees. So, students believe and hope that peaceful protests would draw attention to their plight.” However, institutions like the UNIJOS, the UNILAG, the UNN, and others including private universities cite insufficient budgetary allocations and economic hardships as reasons for the increments in school fees. The negative effects of the sudden hike in school fees by some of the federal universities extend beyond students to parents, families, and even the society. The effects range from psychological distress, to reduced academic focus, low performance, increased dropouts, shattered dreams, depression, and even suicides. For parents, it could lead to stress and high blood pressure which may also result in death. According to the MCSA president in Unilag, a 2022 UNESCO report noted that about 20 million Nigerians were out of school, mainly due to poverty. “If more students drop out due to fee hikes, the idea that the youths are tomorrow’s leaders might never be realised. Education is a critical investment for the common man, and its neglect could lead to societal problems,” he explained. In his contribution, a 300-level engineering student of UNN lamented that the government had lost interest in funding federal institutions, even as he expressed fear that the fee hike would force many students to drop out. He noted that while the UNN management had decided to allow students to pay school fees by instalments to lessen the burden on them, the amount being paid today is frustrating, especially for those sponsoring themselves. The Director of Academics, Department of Combined Social Sciences, UNN, Chijioke Ogenyi, noted that the increment was in response to the harsh economy which the university is not insulated from, but urged the school authorities to be considerate because without the students, there won’t be teachers. He asked: “How can there be quality education for students who cannot afford the fees? There’s no teacher without students, and there will also be no students without teachers; they work hand in hand. “Our institutions should be considerate because without students, they wouldn’t exist. You pay school fees of N25,000 today, and next semester you’re asked to pay ₦100,000. It is said that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop, and individuals who drop out may resort to illegal means to make a living, creating more problems in society. “Obviously, the dreams of those who drop out of school exist only in their imagination. They are filled with regrets and frustration, as they can’t pursue professions like law or medicine that require certification because of high school fees. Their parents’ hopes for a better life are dashed, as they often struggle to invest in their children’s education for a brighter future,” he stated. Speaking on the implication of the latest hike in school fees, Ogenyi said: “One of the implications of high school fees is a corresponding high dropout rate. “For instance, the trending issue among young people is cyber-crime such as internet fraud, popularly called the yahoo yahoo, which damages Nigeria’s reputation internationally. Other social vices like prostitution, child trafficking, armed robbery, kidnapping, and banditry will continue to increase if the current increments in school in these federal universities are not properly addressed. “Keeping students in classrooms will make them occupied and take their minds away from criminal activities. Any serious nation must prioritise its future generation and education is paramount in achieving that. “For Nigeria to become one of the world leaders in science and technology, it must get the education of its citizens right. Improving our healthcare system hinges on education. Education can bring numerous benefits to society. “Therefore, let the Nigerian government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, show compassion and take a critical look at the constant fee increments in the federal universities.” Also, decrying the development, a Lagos resident, Mr. Christian Uduak, whose two children are currently studying in the UNN, said: “We, parents, are likely to suffer from hypertension or depression when we see our children unable to achieve their dreams due to our inability to afford their school fees. “We are not even notified before the increment, and the percentage is usually too much to behold. Many of us couldn’t attend higher institutions, and that’s why our prayers are always for our children to succeed and achieve what we couldn’t achieve due to circumstances during our youthful days. “When our children fail, we see ourselves as failures, and it could lead to over-thinking.” https://.ng/2023/10/02/federal-varsities-fees-hike-unsettles-nigerians/

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has pardoned three inmates of a correctional centre in the state. The governor pardoned Zaro Boniface, Luka Grastone and Jauro Banyi, all serving prison terms in Numan Correctional Centre, in Numan Local Government Area. In the same vein, the governor approved that the death sentence on one Jibrilla Usman from the Custodial Centre in Yola Town be commuted to life sentence. Fintiri, who took the decisions as part of activities marking Nigeria’s independence anniversary, acted on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy, and in exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 212(i) (d) of the Constitution of Nigeria 1999. The governor, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Humwashi Wonosikou, ordered the release of the three prisoners in commemoration of the 2023 Independence Day celebration. Earlier, in his Independence Day speech, the governor had asserted that Nigeria can only be as great as Nigerians make it. “Statehood gave Nigeria a historical opportunity to get rid of colonial oppression, to make independent decisions regarding the country’s destiny, and to create the confident future for the nation,” Fintiri said. https://.ng/2023/10/01/independence-day-gift-fintiri-frees-3-prison-inmates/
