PoliticsSoludo Renames Anambra Airport After Literary Icon, Chinua Achebe by Thonyb2(op): 3:59pm On Oct 01, 2023
Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo has announced the renaming of the Anambra International Airport after late literary icon, Prof Chinua Achebe.

Soludo revealed this during the Independence Day celebration at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, the state capital.

Soludo stated that it was heartwarming that a good number of those who contributed to the independence of Nigeria in 1960, have had varying degrees of projects named after them.

He, however, noted that almost all the projects were named after public office holders, saying his government would break away from the norm to recognize Achebe by naming the Anambra Airport after him.

“We must signal that you don’t have to hold political positions to contribute to the advancement of our civilization.

“Henceforth, we shall be deliberate in fishing out and celebrating our largely unsung heroes, as motivation to our children and youths in terms of what matters, including distinguished teachers, medical and other professionals, persons of honesty and integrity, philanthropists with known sources of wealth, entrepreneurs/job creators, community leaders/developers, clergy with great devotion, etc.

“An example of Africa’s unsung hero is the late Professor Albert Chinualumogu Achebe.

“Achebe was not a President or Governor or Minister. He did not build bridges, roads or airports. But he will outlive most presidents, governors or ministers.

“Achebe gave African literature an identity and a voice. In a way, he rightly reconstructed and redefined who we are and we will never forget. Indeed, he was not an Anambra hero, nor a Nigerian hero. He was an African and global hero, and yet largely unsung at home.

“Consequently, we will rename the Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport, Umueri, to CHINUA ACHEBE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, UMUERI. Yes, it has to be an international airport, and we hope to work with the Federal Government to give full effect to its international status,” Soludo said.

PoliticsUS Court Blocks Tinubu’s Appeal, Orders CSU To Give Records To Atiku On Monday by Thonyb2(op): 1:12pm On Oct 01, 2023
President Bola Tinubu has lost his bid to block Chicago State University from releasing his academic records to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The development came after a United States Judge, Nancy Maldonado, adopted all the ruling of Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Gilbert of the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois, ordering the immediate release of the academic records of Tinubu by the CSU.

Tinubu had objected to the Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Gilbert ruling ordering the immediate release of the academic records by the CSU.

According to the President, releasing the documents with deposition would cause him severe harm because they were private to him and would not be admissible in the ongoing petition against him in Nigeria.

.ng recalls that Atiku, who contested the February 25 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has been seeking Tinubu’s academic records to establish that he presented a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

However, in her ruling on Saturday, Maldonado said the decision of a lower federal magistrate judge on September 19 was appropriate and adopted it in full.

“The Court overrules President Tinubu’s objections to Magistrate Judge Gilbert’s recommended ruling, and therefore adopts the ruling in full. Mr Abubakar’s application is therefore granted,” the judge ruled.

The Judge also gave CSU until noon on Monday to release the documents and the deposition of officials of CSU completed by 5pm CDT on Tuesday.

“In light of the pending Supreme Court of Nigeria deadline, represented to the court as October 5, 2023, and based on CSU’s representations that it is ready to comply with the discovery requests and produce a witness, the court sets an expedited schedule for completion of discovery,” the judge said.

Maldonado warned that any attempt by Tinubu to appeal the judgement in the district would no longer be tolerated as Abubakar must transfer the collected evidence to the Nigeria’s Supreme Court for use in an ongoing election petition case by October 5.

The judge, however, said Tinubu is free to file his appeal directly before the Seventh Circuit – an appellate court overseeing Illinois and nearby states.

Jobs/VacanciesTinubu Returns To Nigeria One Week After Attending UNGA by Thonyb2(op): 11:45am On Sep 30, 2023
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Friday, returned to Nigeria after attending the 78th United Nations General Assembly, which ended last week.

In the past week, Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media, has been silent on the location of Tinubu, who reportedly departed New York on September 22.

Tinubu’s whereabouts were unknown for nearly a week until he returned to Nigeria on Friday night, although unconfirmed reports claimed that he flew to Paris from New York.

At the just concluded UNGA, the Nigerian leader addressed the General Assembly and called on world leaders to join African nations in tackling its challenges.

Tinubu, as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, solicited help to re-establish democratic governance in a manner that addresses the political and economic challenges confronting that nation, including the violent extremists who seek to foment instability in the region.

Accordingly, the President also met with Investors in the U.S. on the need to boost foreign investment in Nigeria.

He met with Nigerians in the U.S., urging them to be good ambassadors of the country.

CrimePolice Charge Man For 1996 Murder Of Rapper, Tupac Shakur by Thonyb2(op): 8:38am On Sep 30, 2023
A Nevada grand jury has indicted 60-year-old Duane “Keffe D” Davis in the murder of legendary American rapper, Tupac Shakur, Sky News reports.

Keffe D, who is said to be the uncle of one of Tupac’s known rivals, Orlando Anderson, was arraigned before the court by the Las Vegas Police.

The jury indicted Keffe D on a charge of murder with the use of a deadly weapon.

His nephew, Anderson, who was reported to have been involved in a casino brawl involving Tupac and his associates on the night of the hip-hop star’s death, denied any involvement in the rapper’s killing at the time.

Anderson died two years later in an unrelated gang shooting.

Keffe D admitted in interviews and his 2019 tell-all memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” that he was in the car allegedly used in the shooting.

Tupac died after being shot multiple times. He was 25 at the time.

Until Friday, there had never been any arrests in the case.

Politics‘We’ll Avert Labour Strike’ – FG Reveals Tinubu’s Plans by Thonyb2(op): 10:20am On Sep 27, 2023
The Federal Government has insisted that there will be no strike in the country despite earlier declaration by the labour unions.

.ng recalls that the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, on Tuesday agreed to embark on a nationwide strike over the failure of the Federal Government to meet their demands.

However, the government said that Tinubu will unveil the palliative package for workers in the customary presidential speech to commemorate Nigeria’s Independence Day.

The spokesperson for the labour ministry, Olajide Oshundun, said the meeting scheduled for Tuesday, would be centred on the pronouncements that would be made by President Bola Tinubu during his October 1 Independence Day broadcast.

He said, “We will avert the strike. We got the news of their intention to go on strike. They need to be rest assured that there will be a pronouncement in the October 1 speech of Mr President for Nigerian workers.

‘’The ministry is working assiduously to meet with the second aspect of the demand which focuses on the wage award. We have already secured the release of the NURTW factional chairman.

“So we hope to invite them on Tuesday following the pronouncement of the President to see reasons for them to call off the strike.”

PoliticsI Shed Tears On Nigerian Roads – Umahi by Thonyb2(op): 8:04am On Sep 27, 2023
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi has said that he shed tears after traveling through some federal roads during a recent project inspection.

He identified procurement processes as a major challenge towards President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s lofty intention.

According to the former Governor, no existing federal road can last up to seven years.

“I shed tears for the kind of pains our people are going through,” the former Ebonyi State Governor said.

Umahi pointed out that some roads are riddled with not just potholes but “boreholes”.

He said this during a meeting with contractors from the six geo-political zones at the ministry’s headquarters on Tuesday, in Abuja.

He expressed dismay at how contractors cheat Nigerians with the materials they use to construct roads in the country.

He said, “There is no project being constructed right now in Nigeria that is going to last for seven years. The question is are we going to be maintaining or reconstructing our roads every 10 years?

“That is what we have been doing. I travelled from Abuja to Benin City through Lokoja, all the stretches of the road are on contract, and ongoing, this is through the policy of the last administration but how much of the roads are motorable?

“I travelled through the roads myself and I shed tears for the kind of pain our people are going through.

“I spent 14 hours on the road having started my journey at 10 am and got to Benin City at 2 pm the next day and I was very happy I experienced the pains.

“President Tinubu said I must travel through all the projects so that I could brief him on my experience and tell him the truth.

“Unless Mr. President does something about our procurement, his lofty intention to help this country may not be achieved. Documents will be sent to the Bureau of Public Procurement for a no-objection certificate and it will stay for six months.

“How will the contractors do the additional job you directed them to do without backup authorisation.”

PoliticsGuber Election Tribunal: Mixed Reactions Trail Controversial Judgments by Thonyb2(op): 7:36am On Sep 27, 2023
Many State Governorship Election Petition Tribunals have delivered judgments on the outcome of the March 18, 2023, governorship elections in Nigeria.

Some of the states include Kano, Bauchi, Zamfara, Plateau, Benue, Enugu, Lagos, Cross River, Gombe, among others.

The judgments so far have been greeted with different reactions from different people depending on which side of the divide one belongs to.

While some people have commended the judgments as reflecting the true position of the law, others have come down heavily against them, describing some of the judgments as pure miscarriage of justice.

Out of the states where judgments have so far been delivered, Kano and Enugu States’ rulings seem to be the most controversial.

On Wednesday, September 20, the governorship election petition tribunal in Kano sacked the incumbent Governor and candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Abba Yusuf, as governor of the State.

In a judgement delivered through zoom, the tribunal ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Yusuf.

It affirmed the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Nasir Gawuna, as the duly elected governor of Kano State.

.ng recalls that Yusuf, who was declared the winner of March 18 governorship elections got 1, 019, 602 votes to defeat his closest rival, Gawuna, who got 890, 705 votes. But, Gawuna and his party were not satisfied with the result, so they filed a petition to challenge Yusuf’s victory.

During the judgement, the tribunal deducted 165, 663 votes from Yusuf’s votes on the ground that the ballot papers were not stamped, signed and dated by INEC as the law required.

The court declared the 165,663 votes invalid, and ordered INEC to issue a certificate of return to the APC candidate.

According to the tribunal, it was the NNPP and Yusuf who provided materials that were used against them as evidence.

“The respondents themselves in my opinion were the ones who helped this court to arrive at the conclusion that this petition is meritorious for the following reasons: The first respondent supplied certified true copies of all the critical electoral documents on the fact of which we found the clear evidence to arrive at the conclusion that the second respondent did not win the March 18 election in Kano State,” the court held.

Soon after the judgement was delivered, there were violent protests across Kano by citizens, who were chanting pro-Yusuf’s slogans. They insisted that they voted for Yusuf and that no court would impose a candidate they never elected on them.

The situation almost got out of hand when the protesters became violent, burning and destroying both public and private property worth millions of Naira. The situation forced the state government to quickly impose a curfew on the entire State so as to arrest the ugly development.

Reacting to the judgement, the NNPP’s National Working Committee, NWC, described it as laughable and nothing short of pure miscarriage of justice.

The party’s acting National Chairman, Abba Kawu Ali, vowed that the party would appeal the judgement.

He said: “New Nigeria People’s Party received with utter incredulity and disbelief the judgement of the Kano State Election Petition Tribunal on the March 18, 2023, Governorship elections.

“The reported judgement nullified the free, credible and globally acclaimed fair election of our governorship candidate, Abba Kabir Yusuf, and brazenly awarded the election to the APC’s candidate, Nasiru Gawuna.

“The Tribunal arrived at this unjust judgement by unfairly subtracting 165,663 votes from the Governor’s tally in order to enable it to unfairly award the election result to the candidate of the ruling APC. In doing so, the Tribunal obviously affirms its belief that the vote tally of the APC candidate was sacrosanct.

“The judgement of the three-man Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal is laughable and nothing but a pure miscarriage of justice.

“The decision of the Tribunal is a slap on the face of constitutionalism and rule of law and is capable of further discouraging the electorate from having confidence in the judiciary.

“The NNPP recalls with regret that this Tribunal has simply replayed the unholy script of 2019 by overturning the will of the people and awarding election results to those who evidently lost the election. The NNPP will appeal this most unfair judgement. We call on millions of our supporters in Kano and in the rest of the country to remain calm and maintain the peace.”

Also, the party’s national secretary, Dipo Olayoku said parties could not be blamed for INEC’s inadequacies, even as he insisted that the judgement was questionable and against the Electoral Act.

However, counsel to the APC, Sanusi Musa, dismissed insinuation that the APC was desperate to take over Kano State, noting that it was the NNPP officials and the State government that had threatened problems in the State.

On his part, a tech analyst, Wale Shaibu insisted that the APC would not want to give up Kano State easily.

“Just like Lagos, you know how crucial Kano State is to electoral success in the country; I mean for the presidential polls. I don’t believe any party would want to lose the state. So, expect them to do anything to get the state back,” he said.

However, there are others who believe that if the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, had won the presidential election, Yusuf could have survived the APC’s onslaught.

This opinion was strongly expressed by a legal practitioner, Ahmed Tanimu, when he said: “Kano overwhelmingly voted for Yusuf, however, the devil that is affecting the mandate is because Atiku did not win the presidential poll. If Atiku had won, he would not be removed from office by the tribunal.”

In a related development, the Tribunal’s ruling in Enugu, which upheld the election of Governor Peter Mbah and dismissed the petition of the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Chijioke Edeoga is also generating reactions.

The INEC had, on March 22, declared Mbah, the candidate of the PDP as the winner of the March 18, governorship election in the state, after polling 160,895 votes to defeat his closest rival, Edeoga, who got 157,552 votes.

Dissatisfied with the declaration, Edeoga filed a petition at the tribunal, challenging Mbah’s victory at the poll. Among the grounds of the petition by the LP candidate was that Mbah’s election should be voided for allegedly submitting a forged discharge certificate from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Delivering judgement on Thursday, a three-member tribunal headed by Kudirat Akano dismissed the petition on the ground that Edeoga failed to prove his allegation that Mbah submitted a forged certificate to INEC.

The tribunal ruled that the NYSC discharge certificate, assuming it was indeed forged, was not among the requirements for the qualifications of a person for the office of the governor in line with Sections 177 and 138 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

It held that Mbah was qualified to contest the election even without submitting any NYSC discharge certificate, adding that a Senior Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent is a minimum academic qualification for election for the office of the governor in line with Section 177 of the constitution.

The tribunal argued that since Mbah did not submit the NYSC certificate to aid his qualification for the office, his election could not be voided on the grounds of non-qualification.

Justice Akano also ruled that Edeoga equally failed to prove that there was non-use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) during the election in Nkanu East Local Government Area; therefore, the tribunal dismissed the LP’s contention that Mbah did not win a majority of valid votes at the poll.

However, the tribunal agreed that Edoga proved the allegation of over-voting at some polling units in Amagu Ugbawka, Nkanu East Local Government Area.

But, the LP and its candidate, Edeoga, had rejected the tribunal verdict, and vowed to test it on appeal.

“We wish to convey the acknowledgment by the Labour Party and its candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, of the judgement as delivered at the tribunal, and to state our preparedness to challenge the outcome of this judgement at the Court of Appeal, and to all extents as permitted by law,” Edeoga’s spokesman, George Ugwu, said.

For Gov Mbah, it was a judgement well delivered as he applauded the tribunal’s verdict, describing it as a victory for democracy and Enugu State.

He also extended a hand of fellowship to the opposition candidates and their political parties, saying that collective efforts were needed to build Enugu State.

Mbah said: “There is time for everything under the sun. There is time to strive and time to unite. We all put ourselves forward to serve Ndi Enugu.

“The people have spoken and the tribunal has also affirmed. If service was the motivation, then it is time to rise above partisanship and come together because there is so much work to be done.

“Our arms are wide open and I beckon to my brothers, who ran this race with us, to join us in the onerous task of building a new Enugu State of our dreams.

“In the same vein, I enjoin all our supporters to be magnanimous in victory. Politics is over. Governance began on 29th May when we were inaugurated. It is time to unite.”

Lending his voice to the rulings by the governorship election tribunals across the country is the president of the Middle Belt Forum, MBF, Dr. Pogu Bitrus, who admitted that he was not in the best position to comment on the validity or otherwise of some of the judgments, since he is not a lawyer, but insisted that any judgement that was based on technicality would be upturned at a higher court.

He said: “The issue with the judgement of the tribunal is something I cannot adequately address because I am not a lawyer. And since I am not a lawyer, I wouldn’t want to comment on the validity or otherwise of the judgement since I cannot interpret what the judges have done.

“For now, all we would want to do is to give them the benefit of the doubt and if for any reason, they used technicality rather than law, then of course, it will eventually be upturned by a higher court. So, let us wait and encourage the petitioners to go ahead to a higher court if they are not satisfied. I believe justice will eventually emerge, whether it is that of Kano or Enugu.”

Commenting about the ruling on Enugu governorship election, a legal practitioner and former national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Maxi Okwu, commended the judges for producing the judgement in a record time, but claimed that they turned the judgement upside down.

He said: “I just received a copy of the Enugu judgement and I must commend the tribunal for being so fast. I commend them for the fast production of the judgement, which is the way it should be.

“But, I have issues with their judgement. As far as I am concerned, they turned the judgement upside down. I have not read the whole judgement but from what I can gather, there are some issues that must be resolved at the Court of Appeal, and ultimately, the Supreme Court.”

He argued that the issue of Mbah’s NYSC certificate was not properly addressed.

He picked holes with the area that required the petitioner, Edeoga, to provide the original of the forged document, stressing that the only authorised body to do that is the issuing agency, in this the NYSC.

“I don’t think the issue of forgery was properly dealt with. Nobody is saying that NYSC is a requirement for contesting election into the office of governor of a state, but the same constitution makes it clear that if you present a forged document to INEC as part of your requirements to contest an election, you are disqualified; and the only agency that will prove whether a document or certificate is forged or not is the issuing agency.

“So, how does anybody expect the petitioner to produce the original of the forged NYSC certificate when the NYSC gave evidence and it was struck? A subpoenaed witness is a court witness; how can you strike out evidence by such a witness? Well, let me read the whole judgement first but on prima facie, I am worried. However, I believe that justice will be obtained at the higher courts,” he stressed.

Commenting on the judgement by the Kano governorship tribunal, he said even though he has not read the judgement, he could sense danger from what he has read in the media.

“For the Kano tribunal, I have not read their judgement but from what I have gathered from the media, it is another recipe for disaster,” he said.

He wondered why APC went to court when its candidate accepted defeat and congratulated the winner.

“The APC candidate himself conceded; it was his party that went to court. So, that is a very funny situation. The party is qualified to go to court but the issue is that the man they presented refused to go to court and congratulated the winner.

“Well, let us wait and see how it goes but like I said, it is not over in most of these areas. For the governorship, there are still two steps to go – the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

“Let’s see how it goes but the picture is still very worrisome. We have been receiving all sorts of confusing judgments here and there by concurrent panels. Let us see how they will be resolved at the higher level,” he stated.

Also speaking, the president of Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF), Yerima Shettima noted that some of the rulings so far had reflected the true will of the people. He also commended INEC for conducting a credible election, while calling for further amendments and corrections on the electoral law to ensure better results in future elections.

“So far so good, some of the rulings have actually reflected the true will of the people, while a few others may not stand the test of time on appeal. No election is devoid of electoral malpractices.

“So, we must commend INEC for a good job, while we look forward to further amendments and corrections because we are learning and we will continue to learn,” he said.

Business‘I Will Shoot GDP To $1trn In 8 Years’ – New CBN Gov, Cardoso Vows by Thonyb2(op): 7:23am On Sep 27, 2023
The newly confirmed Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Dr. Olayemi Cardoso has disclosed plans to shore up the country’s Gross Domestic Product, GDP, to $1 trillion in eight years.

Cardoso spoke while answering questions from senators during his screening and confirmation as the governor of the apex bank.

Those confirmed as deputy governors are: Emem Usoro, Philip Ikeazor, Muhammad Abdullahi-Dattijo, and Bala Bello

He assured that the ratified board will adopt a number of strategies including short term and medium terms goals to repair the economy.

According to him, to achieve stability in Nigeria’s exchange rate, measures must be put in place towards ensuring a healthy balance of payment and diversification of the economy, .ng reports.

“When you look at the dimension of inflation, we will be doing evidence-based monetary policy. We shall not be making decisions based on a whim.

“We will significantly rebound the infrastructural demand with respect to ensuring that our data gathering capacity is enhanced so we can make decisions based on proper data,” he said.

According to him, the immediate thing to look out for if confirmed as CBN Governor is to address operational issues which are the unsettled obligations of the CBN.

He opined that Nigeria will not make progress if it is not able to handle that side of foreign exchange rate, saying they would do everything possible to ensure that they work closely on the fiscal side and ensure the issue of deficit financing does not become a problem.

He further pointed out the need for a strategy known to players, adding that these immediate steps will ease restrictions in the country’s business environment.

Cardoso added that removal of oil subsidy, tightening up tax payment, among others, are part of measures to stabilize the economy.

“There’s the need to significantly revamp data gathering capacity of the CBN to help in evidence-based decision making by the regulatory house.

“We have to ramp up production of food, that is the aspect the fiscal side will handle and we’ll work very closely with the fiscal side on this, and on energy to make sure that happens quickly.

“The way money has gone in Nigeria on its own has an effect on inflation. And we have seen studies that suggest that money supply has impacted on inflation in the country.

“We also have to work very closely with the fiscal side to ensure that we work on deficit financing,” the former Commissioner for Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget said.

The new CBN team equally pledged to ensure a collaborative working relationship with the fiscal policy regulators so as to ensure that things don’t get heated up in the polity.

According to him, there will be a change of mindset in the CBN to promote compliance, maintaining that the apex bank under him will work with the Senate for consultations and adherence to the CBN Act.

Cardoso further underscored the need to do things right, insisting that the bank will not be hijacked by anybody.

“We will not knowingly or unknowingly disobey the law. We are going to endure a culture of compliance in the bank. We are not going to tolerate people not complying. That tone would be fully set from the top,” Cardoso added.

He pledged to bring the best, most qualified advisers, and that the new CBN bank will promote a culture of openness to get the best results.

Also responding to questions from lawmakers, Philip Ikeazu, a Deputy Director, said the new CBN board will “strengthen corporate governance and ensure proper drive of economic policy to maintain price stability and promote a healthy forex.”

He called on the upper chamber to support the apex bank to drive export of locally manufactured goods, and promote corporate governance.

This is just as he commended the federal government for blocking leakages in the economy, and for stopping the fuel subsidy regime.

The CBN team also affirmed that the regulatory body has “strayed significantly over the years”, and that it was committed to returning back on track, and ensuring open and transparent communication with Nigerians.

They assured restoring the dignity of the Central Bank, just as they expressed hope to double economic growth over a 10 year period, as well as expanding the capacity of the economy to produce more “Dangotes and Otedolas.”

During the exercise, the lawmakers bemoaned the woes bedeviling the country’s economy, as they expressed fears at the involvement of the regulatory bank in sectors outside the mandate of the Central Bank Act.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, while addressing the Committee of the Whole, frowned at the involvement of the CBN in construction of classrooms, among others.

He emphasized the need for an apex bank that is focused on providing sound policy and monetary directions for the economy.

Akpabio also regretted that the bank under the former board lost its focus and veered into politics “with money that belongs to Nigerians.”

“No where in the world is a currency changed within one week. But the CBN changed the Naira in 11 days just to sabotage the elections, and because some politicians told him that you can contest for election after all you have money with you,” the Senate President added.

CrimePolice Parade 92 Suspects In Enugu, Recover Arms by Thonyb2(op): 7:00am On Sep 27, 2023
Enugu State Police Command has paraded 92 suspects arrested in different parts of the state for various offences, including murder, armed robbery, kidnapping and cultism.

Exhibits recovered from the suspects include four AK-47 rifles, 66 firearms of different calibres, 333 live ammunition of different calibres, 25 vehicles and other incriminating items.

The Commissioner of Police in the State, Kanayo Uzuegbu, who paraded the suspects in Enugu on Tuesday, attributed the success recorded within one month of his assumption of duty in Enugu, to the application of the right policing strategies.

The strategies, he said, were devised to tackle existing and emerging security challenges in the State.

According to him, the strategies were subsumed in his grassroots-driven, proactive, people-oriented and problem-solving policing thrust, which is in line with the policing vision and mission of the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

“I have met and interacted with critical security stakeholders, including local government chairmen, traditional rulers, heads of other security agencies and many others, on the best ways to collectively tackle security challenges in the State.

“These engagements, I must tell you, have started paying off as we are making remarkable progress in tackling violent crimes of kidnapping, armed robbery and the criminal activities of subversive criminals.

“It is a known fact that it is humanly impossible to totally eliminate crimes in human society. However, I want to assure the good people of Enugu State and visitors that we remain committed to ensuring that maximum security and tranquility are maintained in the State,” he said.

PoliticsImpose Sanction On Illegal Minerals, Arms Smugglers In Africa – Tinubu by Thonyb2(op): 9:30am On Sep 20, 2023
President Bola Tinubu told United Nations members at the UNGA that sanctions should be given to companies and persons involved in illegal arms and minerals smuggling in and out of Africa.

Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, disclosed that Tinubu made this known when he addressed world leaders at the 78th United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday in New York, USA.

President Tinubu accused foreign entities of contributing to poverty and chaos in parts of Africa.

“Foreign entities that are abetted by local criminals, who aspire to be petty warlords, have drafted thousands of our people into servitude to illegally mine gold and other resources.

“Billions of dollars meant to improve the nation now fuel countless violent enterprises. If left unchecked, they will threaten peace and place national security at grave risk. Given the extent of this injustice and the high stakes involved, many Africans are asking whether this phenomenon is by accident or design.

“Member nations must reply by working with us to deter their firms and nationals from this 21st-century pillage of the continent’s riches”, he stated.

On economic investment in Nigeria and Africa, Tinubu stressed that the country and continent are open for business.

“The question is not whether Nigeria is open for business. The question is how much of the world is truly open to doing business with Nigeria and Africa in an equal, mutually beneficial manner”, he added.

PoliticsRemi Tinubu, Governors’ Wives Move To Address “Japa” Syndrome by Thonyb2(op): 7:22am On Sep 19, 2023
The First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu has called on Nigerians in the diaspora to contribute their quota to the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

She also called on Nigerian youths to have hope in the efforts of the current administration to deliver on the dividends of democracy and provide for their basic needs.

According to the UN, in 2022, 26,400 Nigerian citizens requested asylum abroad, while 27,000 Nigerian citizens were recognised as refugees and granted protection in 2022.

Mrs Tinubu made the call on Monday at the New York 2023 Nigeria Economic Growth and Trade Summit with the theme: “Stemming Migration Flows by Providing Basic Needs’’.

The UN correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the summit was organised by the Nigerian Governors’ Wives’ Forum on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

The first lady said while migration could offer new opportunities and experiences, it also presented risks and challenges that could manifest in brain drain.

“The brain drain phenomenon where highly skilled individuals leave their home country for supposedly better prospects abroad, is a concern for many African nations, depriving them of their expertise and talents needed for sustainable growth.

“In our various communities, we must work towards creating conditions and providing basic needs that allow people to thrive by providing access to qualitative education, an enabling environment for job creation.

“And the development of local industries that will create viable economic opportunities.

“We must revamp our healthcare sector to ensure that basic health care services are accessible to all.

“Improve health care conditions and stronger social support systems that discourage migration driven by health concerns.

“The Renewed Hope Initiative is an initiative that we just started, aimed at creating a better life for families.

“Our scope covers agriculture, education, economic empowerment, health and social investment, focusing on women and the youth, who are the bedrock of the society.

“Youths account for 70 per cent of our population and women represent 49.6 per cent of the population.

“I believe that schemes which focus on empowering this demographic, coupled with an enabling environment, will gradually begin to reverse the negative trend of migration.’’

She told the wives of the governors that as first ladies, their roles as leaders were critical to driving sustainable change within their communities.

“You must work together with government agencies to complement and support the establishment of laws that protect human rights and provide equal opportunities.

“Policy reforms that encourage skilled individuals to return home after obtaining educational experience abroad, can help reverse the dream.

“We must continue to acknowledge the good work the international agencies, well-meaning individuals in the diaspora and in the private sector, are doing in our nation.

“Through a forum like this, we can encourage diaspora engagement, establish avenues for Nigerians living abroad to contribute to the country’s development.

“Through investment, knowledge sharing, and collaborations which can help mitigate the negative effects of brain drain,’’ she stated.

The first lady urged Nigerians to foster a positive narrative, celebrate their cultural heritage, national achievements and promote a sense of pride in Nigeria.

According to her, Nigeria is on the brink of a major economic recovery of buoyancy.

She charged Nigerian youths to learn the virtues of patience and resilience as everyone continued to work as a collective to help build a greater and better Nigeria.

NAN reports that no fewer than 12 wives of the governors were at the event.

They included the first ladies of Oyo State, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde; Ogun, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun; Imo, Mrs Chioma Uzodinma; and Gombe, Hajiya Asma’u Yahaya.
