Ex-President of the Nigerian Senate, Ahmad Lawan, says impunity for crimes against journalists threatens democracy and undermines freedom of the press. Lawan made this known in a statement by his Media Adviser, Ezrel Tabiowo, on Thursday, to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists. The lawmaker, who represents Yobe North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, underscores the crucial role played by journalists in promoting accountability and upholding democratic values. Citing data from the United Nations Observatory of Killed Journalists, Lawan noted that journalists are endangered, with over 1,600 journalists killed around the world in the last 17 years. He called on governments, institutions and civil society organizations to work collectively to hold perpetrators accountable and ensure justice for attacks against journalists. Lawan further advocated a national plan to establish protective measures that guarantee the safety of journalists and to end impunity. The statement reads, “I join the international community in marking the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists today. This day serves as a stark reminder of the perils faced by journalists worldwide and the urgent need to address the issue of impunity for crimes committed against them. “This year, the annual commemoration is especially significant, as it highlights the crucial role journalists play in providing unbiased information, promoting accountability, and upholding democratic values. However, journalists continue to face alarming risks, including violence, intimidation, and even targeted killings, simply for reporting on critical issues or exposing corruption. “Impunity for crimes against journalists remains a grave concern. Lack of accountability perpetuates a climate of fear, silencing not only journalists but also those seeking the truth and defending human rights. I firmly believe that impunity for these crimes undermines press freedom, erodes democracy, and threatens the foundation of any just society. “According to the UNESCO Observatory of Killed Journalists, over 1,600 journalists have been killed around the world between 2006 and 2023, with close to 9 out of 10 cases of these killings remaining judicially unresolved. “It is imperative for governments, institutions, and civil society organizations to work collectively to hold perpetrators accountable and ensure justice for attacks against journalists. Through comprehensive legal frameworks, effective investigation mechanisms, and unbiased judicial processes, we can combat impunity, safeguard freedom of expression, and protect those on the frontlines of truth. “I call on governments to prioritize the safety of journalists and create an environment where they can report independently, without fear of reprisals. It is essential to establish protective measures, such as national action plans, to guarantee the safety of journalists and end impunity. “Moreover, education is vital in combating impunity. By raising awareness about the threats faced by journalists and promoting media literacy, we can foster a culture of respect for journalism and cultivate a society that values press freedom as a cornerstone of democracy. “On this International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, let us reaffirm our commitment to promoting press freedom and defending the rights of journalists worldwide. I urge all stakeholders to take immediate action to end impunity and protect those who work tirelessly to bring truth to light.” https://.ng/2023/11/02/impunity-against-journalists-threat-to-democracy-former-senate-president-lawan/

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Kogi central senatorial district in the 2023 general election, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has claimed Governor Yahaya Bello offered her up to N70 million to step down. Akpoti-Uduaghan stated this while appearing on Arise TV on Wednesday morning. According to her, Bello initially offered her N50 million to step down for his anointed candidate. “In 2018, before I joined the SDP, I was in the APC for pretty much. “The Governor called on me along with nine other aspirants at that point to step down. “He offered some people money. He offered me money as well. He offered me N50 million at first, I turned it down. He then said ‘How about N70m?’ to stand down for his anointed candidate who was then a Senator. “I told him I wasn’t in the race for money. It was not for personal aggrandisement, but to make an impact on my people. And that annoyed him. “Yahaya Bello does not like to be dared. He wants his words to be law.” https://.ng/2023/11/01/yahaya-bello-offered-me-n70m-to-step-down-for-his-candidate-natasha-akpoti-uduaghan/

After months of legal fireworks, the Supreme Court has finally brought to a closure the controversies surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February 25, 2023, presidential election. Recall that on Thursday, October 26, the Supreme Court affirmed the victory of President Tinubu in the February 25 presidential election, which was challenged up to the apex court by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and his Labour Party, LP, counterpart, Mr. Peter Obi. With the Supreme Court’s judgment, the coast is now very clear for President Tinubu to concentrate on governance. It is also believed that there will be no distractions any more, and as such, he has no reason not to perform. Since he was declared the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Tinubu and his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, their supporters, and indeed, Nigerians, have been waiting with bated breath to know the outcome of the legal suits challenging his victory. Many APC supporters and some political analysts are of the view that the development has been largely responsible for the government’s slow pace in addressing the myriad of socio-economic, political and security problems. Nigerians had expected that Tinubu’s administration would be a total departure from the immediate past administration of Muhammdu Buhari, which was characterized by a high level of insecurity, economic hardship and division among Nigerians along ethnic and religious lines. But, those expectations have not been met. Nigerians are in a more precarious economic condition, with the inflation rate getting to a frightening level and prices of essential commodities like food rising above the reach of the common man. It is expected that President Tinubu, having won his electoral case at the Supreme Court, should take some practical steps to address the country’s many challenges, some of which have made life hellish for many Nigerians. On what he should do immediately, the president of the Middle Belt Forum (MBF), Dr. Pogu Bitrus told newsmen that having started by working on the economy through the removal of fuel subsidy, and having been battling on how to address the problem of Nigeria since then, the President should do everything possible to stabilize the naira. “I think he now needs to come forcefully and ensure that he stabilises the naira, and stop these palliatives and sharing of money. “If today he says, we will have at least three conversion centres in each state capital for a start to convert petrol engines to be able to use the LPG, rather than giving money to people, the impact will be positively felt immediately. If he starts that, and subsidises the conversion – cost of the tanks and the kicks, you will see that in less than a month or two, thousands of vehicles will be converted to be able to use the LPG. “The effect will be so phenomenal that people will begin to say that this man is serious and that removing the subsidy was a worthwhile move. That’s one with regards to the economy,” he said. On the issue of security, he said the President could also call all the service chiefs and put them on notice, like saying, “Look I am giving you one month or so, for all the bandits’ hideouts to be wiped out. Any bandit who wants to remain a bandit is up to him or her, so that you can say by January, all the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) can go back to their ancestral homes. “I am telling you that if he does that, you can be sure that Nigerians will begin to hail him, and say yes, this is the real president.” Regarding the talks about nepotism, and following Buhari’s footsteps, Dr Pogu said the President must retrace his steps and address that. “The issue is, yes I am from the Middle Belt, the Yoruba man is not my enemy because he is not going to come and take over my land. He is not going to invite somebody from Togo or Lome to come and take over the Middle Belt’s land. “Our problem has always been the Fulani. We are not against the Fulani, but for them to bring their brothers from outside this country and use tricks to take over our lands is not acceptable. So, for us, our ancestral land is very important and I believe it is the same thing across the country, including the South East, South-South and South West. “Let Mr. President take this issue of getting the military to weed out these people very fast and get the IDPs back to their ancestral land. Honestly, the whole country will praise him for that. “Then, there are so many areas within the revenue generating sector; for example, the Customs and the NNPCL. The NNPCL has been taken over by people from one section of the country. You can go and start listing from the Group Managing Director down to even the smallest position and you will find out that some group of people are occupying all those positions. Let him look into it. “Yes, there is a need for him to study that place very well, but there has to be a Nigerian outlook because we are losing so much in that sector and something has to be done. He has to be serious about it for us to resolve some of the problems caused in the last eight years of Buhari’s regime. “He has to look closely into two places – the NNPCL and the Central Bank of Nigeria. Of course, with the arrest of Godwin Emefiele, I believe he must have got adequate information now to be able to guide him in terms of how to address the CBN problem, and the pilferages associated with those sections. I think these will address our economic situation, and then the military and the security situation will address others to give this country a take-off position. “We are so indebted; we don’t expect miracles to happen immediately. But, if he starts doing something, not long from now, Nigerians will come to say that whatever it is, God is responsible and the man is now on track. “We thank God for his appointment of Nyesom Wike as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, because we need people like Wike. Remember that since Nasir El Rufai left the place, the FCT has been dormant; it is Wike that is making the place look like an FCT. With the Supreme Court judgment, and the fact that we have somebody who is that vibrant, the President should strengthen him, and let us have things done properly,” he said. He advised the President to take the issue of infrastructure seriously. Pogu also believes strongly that restructuring Nigeria should be of paramount importance to the President if he truly wants to address many of the problems facing Nigeria. “We want President Tinubu to have the courage to take on the issue of restructuring headlong. Games were played for sectional reasons, and the 2014 National Conference report, which tried to address many of Nigeria’s problems, was swept away. “Let him have the boldness to solve the problems of this country so that he can go down in history as the man who made it happen,” he stated. The former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Maxi Okwu, also believes that the economy is in tatters and haemorrhaging and needs urgent intervention. “The economy is in such a state that if care is not taken, we will go comatose,” he warned. He wants President Tinubu to address the issue of national cohesion urgently. Okwu told : “There is dissension in the land. People are not happy. When we were in the Alliance for democracy (AD) and National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Tinubu used to be or was a progressive. He should not stop the work of the 2014 National Confab. Let Nigeria be restructured, otherwise, we will surely have a date with fate. “We must address the national question critically and urgently. The nation is not cohesive; people are not happy. So, it has to be addressed so that if the spirit of patriotism is restored, then we can work hard to rebuild the nation after Buhari’s devastation.” He also noted that the President should tackle the economy to, at least, arrest the slide in the immediate term, stressing that the long term projection must be based on national cohesion and the willingness of the citizenry to work for their country in building a nation. “That has to be done by confab when we agree on how to live together, failing which we will continue to bleed as a nation,” he submitted. For the president, Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), Alhaji Yerima Shettima, there are two critical issues that Tinubu should address immediately. “First, I am sure he is aware that people can no longer fend for themselves. The level of poverty is so high that people now sleep without any guarantee of eating the next day. So, that must be tackled immediately. “He must come up with a practical policy to alleviate the suffering of the masses, not just by saying it in mouth. That is very fundamental because without that, Nigeria cannot overcome the security challenge. People are suffering and I am sure he is aware. “People have made sacrifices and voted for him believing that he has all it takes to bring them out of the shackles of poverty and hopeless situation they found themselves under the last administration. “Secondly, he must come up with programmes that will unite the country because we are more divided now than we were in 2015. He must unite the country, irrespective of political party, ethnicity or religion; he must bring everybody together as the father of the nation. Those are the critical things I want him to look into as soon as possible and find answers to them,” he said in an interview with newsmen. He also believes that President Tinubu should adequately address the allegation of nepotism, which he said had been exhibited in the key appointments made so far. He said: “I am happy that there are other pending appointments apart from the ministerial appointments. He should do the right thing by maintaining balance in the remaining key appointments so that he could clear the doubt that he is also an ethnic champion. “He should rejig the appointments so that everybody can have a sense of belonging and he must be seen to carry every section of the country along, otherwise if he goes one way, I don’t think it is going to be a smooth ride for him. “He must ensure that every section of this country is being considered, and in doing that, he must look for the best brains, and not just appoint people because he wants to adhere to the principle of balance or federal character. “In every section of this country, there are first class brains; they should be carried along so that it doesn’t seem as if it is only Lagos that has the best brains. This will give everybody a sense of belonging and move the country forward. Anything that cannot be better than the last administration will spell doom for Nigeria, and may God forbid that.” In his opinion, a former member of the Katsina State House of Assembly, Hon Shehu Yusuf said President Tinubu now has the responsibility to employ every possible means to engage the opposition and ensure that Nigeria is united and developed. This, he said, was very important because the opposition has talented people among them that could advise and work with the President, despite their political differences. “I am also appealing to the opposition that if they are approached genuinely to advise or participate in the project Nigeria, they should endeavour to give advice for the development of all. “Politics is a game of numbers and one person must win. Now that the judicial battle is over and the beginning of Tinubu’s four year tenure is on course, unity, economic development, peace and stability is what Nigerians need. “The opposition fought very well but since politics is a game of numbers, Nigerians have decided and the APC has won. They followed the judicial process and the apex court has also affirmed Tinubu’s election. We wish all of them well. They are all well meaning Nigerians; therefore, they should team up and bring stability to Nigeria,” he told newsmen. On alleged nepotism of Tinubu’s government, he also advised that the President should try and carry every section of the country along, so that the country could move forward. “If you look at the appointment the current government has made so far, it has favoured the South West, and it has not considered the South East well. “It is not balanced at all, but since the legal processes are now over, I am advising the government and the opposition to work together. The Igbo, if contacted, should respond genuinely and try to put aside all differences and be onboard so that Nigeria can make progress,” he said. https://.ng/2023/11/01/supreme-court-judgement-its-time-for-action-pogu-okwu-shettima-others-charge-tinubu/

Ahead of the governorship election slated for November 11 in Imo State, a group of civil society organisations, CSOs, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, of an alleged planning to ‘harvest and write results.’ The allegation is coming a few days after the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, accused the electoral umpire of importing thousands of already compromised BVAS machines into the state in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the State. Speaking at a press conference in Enugu on Sunday, the International Society For Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, Intersociety, and the South-East Based Coalition Of Democracy And Human Rights Organizations, queried the INEC on whether it was truly organising a free, fair, secured and credible election or planning to harvest and write results for the incumbent, Governor Hope Uzodinma. The press conference was addressed by Mr Emeka Umeagbalasi, Board Chair, Intersociety, Mr Anayo Okoli, Member of the Board, Chidinma Evangeline Udegbunam, Head of Campaign and Publicity, Prof Jerry Chidozie Chukwuokolo, for South-East Based Coalition of Democracy and Human Rights Organizations, Engineer Ikenwoke Nwandu, Head, Data Collection and Documentation and Comrade Aloysius Emeka Attah, Leader, South-East, Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO. The groups claimed that available pieces of evidence and realities on the ground have continued to strongly indicate that the INEC was planning to ‘harvest and write results’ for the incumbent in the State. “The above is more so when it must not be hurriedly forgotten and that the January 14, 2020 Nigeria’s Supreme Court verdict that installed Hope Uzodinma as ‘Imo Governor’ remotely originated from ‘harvested results’ from 311 polling units in the State where voting either did not take place or was cancelled as a result of widespread violence and gross malpractices in the State’s April 2019 Governorship Election. “It is not out of place for us to express deep fears that another round of result harvesting and writing is cooking in Imo. “Nigerians and other international democracy watchers will not be surprised to see the allocation of 500,000-1m (dead) votes as ‘total valid and lawful votes scored by the incumbent…winning a landslide’. “However, and truly speaking; going by several investigations done by Intersociety and the realities on the ground in Imo State, the true winner of the State’s Nov 11, 2023 Governorship Poll, in an atmosphere of ‘one-man-one-vote contest’, will not score more than 90,000-130,000 (living) votes. This will be out of possibly total lawful votes cast of not more than 300,000. “This projection was arrived at after putting into consideration the fears, chaos and bloodletting that have gripped the State since January 2021 in which more than half of the State’s 27 Local Government Areas are deeply affected and 65% or 1.8m (out of the State’s 2.4m PVC holders) of the registered voting population uprooted and forced out of their voting areas, leaving the State with only 600,000 eligible voters, out of which 300,000 may maximally vote,” they claimed. They demanded that “Imo voters must be protected and allowed to freely vote for governorship candidates of their choice on Nov 11, 2023 and their ‘living votes’ and properties protected. “Apart from ensuring their security and safety, the voting routes and environments and their residences and sensitive voting materials including result sheets (.i.e. FormEC8As) must also be secured and subversive elements within the security forces, including deployed soldiers, police crack squads and ‘Ebubeagu killer militias’ and all armed non-state criminal entities stopped from wrecking more havoc. “The restoration of sanctity of the ballot box in Imo, corrupted and bastardised following the January 14, 2020 Supreme Court judgement, is capable of ending the ongoing mass murders and property destructions that have ravaged the State since January 2021.” They disclosed that letters had been written to the INEC and the various security agencies, demanding that visible action must be taken to protect the sanctity of the ballot. The CSOs said: “We are calling for ‘No Result Sheets, No Voting’ in the Imo’s Nov 11, 2023 Governorship Poll. “Location of collation centres must be outside the arenas under the grip and undue influence of the Government of Imo State. “INEC must urgently reverse all politically motivated staff postings, appointments and transfers ahead of the Nov 11, 2023 Governorship Poll. “The Letter to INEC specifically requested and still request for transfer of Imo REC, Prof Sylvia Agu and eight heads of Imo’s INEC key departments; namely: Emmanuella Okpara (HOD-Voter Education), Mr. Raymond (HOD-ICT), Chinonye Osuji (Public Relations Officer), Dr. Fidelis Uguru (Acting Administrative Secretary), Agnes Elokpo (ICT Department), Okorie Esther (Acting HOD-Operations), Barrister Sunday Nwaigboko (HOD Legal) and Mrs. Gloria Ogbuechi (INEC EO for Nkanu East in the 2023 Governorship Election in Enugu State, now posted to Imo State). “We are also not comfortable with the continued retention in Imo INEC of the following eleven Local Government Electoral Officers (EOs): Emeka Okike Ukpa (Owerri West), Omeje Peter Ikebuchukwu (Nwerre), Nwabisi Theresa (Mbaitoli), Nnebue Adolph (Ezinihitte-Mbaise), Nnonyelum Benjamin (Ngokpala), Okorie Franklyn (Isiala-Mbano), Uzor Chikwendu (Okigwe), Nwachukwu Anyalewechi (Onuimo), Chukwuemeka Blessing (Orlu), Okafor Obiorah (Orsu), Uzoka Emmanuel (Oru East).” https://.ng/2023/10/30/imo-guber-polls-inec-planning-to-harvest-write-results-intersociety-alleges/

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has disclosed that his government will recall many retired doctors who are still strong to work. Otu has also directed that the services of retiring nurses be extended by three years. This is as a result of the acute shortage of doctors and other medical personnel in the state hospitals, even as many would be retiring from service end of this year. Commissioner for health in the State, Dr Henry Egbe disclosed this in Calabar to journalists. “As many in the health sector will also be retiring from service in 2023, the Governor has decided to extend the services of the nurses that would be retiring, for three more years. “Similarly, the state government is also looking at recalling some of the retired doctors who are still strong to work in the state’s health sector on contract basis,” he said. Ayuk said the state government would meet with the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Civil Society Organisations to work out some incentives for medical practitioners to be sent to rural communities, subject to the governor’s approval. Rep Sani Yakubu, (APC-Sokoto) has expressed satisfaction with the recent judgment from the State and National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal. Yakubu, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto on Saturday in Sokoto stated that the judgment had effectively protected the mandate of his constituents. The tribunal on Thursday upheld Yakubu’s election as the duly elected member representing Gudu and Tangaza Fderal Constituency. The three-man tribunal panel, led by Justice Josephine Oyefeso, delivered the ruling, dismissing the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Musa Gidan-Madi, who contested the victory of the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate. The tribunal cited the petitioners’ failure to substantiate their claims and also imposed a fine of N200,000 on them. Yakubu, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to the Almighty Allah for his success at the tribunal, pointing out that the 2023 election in his constituency stood out as one of the best nationwide, truly reflecting the will of the voters. “In the general election, I achieved a historic margin, the first of its kind since the return of democracy in 1999 in our constituency. Unfortunately, it was initially declared inconclusive. “However, after a second round of counting, I was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). “So, the tribunal Judgement not only reaffirmed my victory but also ensured the protection of the electorate’s mandate,” he said. Regarding the potential appeal of the judgment by the PDP and its candidate, the lawmaker emphasised that it was a democratic norm for dissatisfied parties to seek clarification through the Courts. “Therefore, I want to assure you that I am confident in the judiciary’s ability to uphold justice,” Yakubu declared. https://.ng/2023/10/22/tribunal-judgment-rep-member-yakubu-claims-victory-safeguards-constituents-mandate/

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has warned the apex Igbo sociocultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, to be careful not to stand in the way of Igbos agitating for Biafra. IPOB insisted that the group remains resolute on its clamour for Biafra referendum. Emma Powerful, the spokesman of IPOB, issued the warning while reacting to the comment by a chieftain of Ohanaeze, Barrister Augustine Amaechi, against Biafra referendum. Amaechi had said Igbos want restructuring and not referendum as claimed by IPOB. Condemning the remark, Powerful described those against Biafra’s referendum as political jobbers. A statement by Powerful reads partly: “The attention of the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been drawn to the unguarded statements credited to one Abuja based Ohaneze Ndigbo chieftain, Barrister Augustine Amaechi claiming that Ohaneze Ndigbo wants restructuring not referendum. “The few political jobbers in Ohanaeze Ndigbo demanding restructure should perish with it. Biafrans want a referendum. “IPOB members and supporters worldwide represent over 90% of Biafrans. We have made it clear to the Nigeria government and the international community that Biafrans want a referendum to democratically decide to either remain in Nigeria or exit Nigeria. “This is our only demand. We are not going back on our demand for a UN supervised referendum in Nigeria for the determination of Biafra Independence. Once the Nigeria government heeds our democratic demand for a Biafra referendum, Nigeria’s major problem will be solved. “We shall not warn Ohanaeze again. If this buffoon called Augustine Amaechi is speaking for himself, Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership must make that clear publicly otherwise we shall take his ranting as the position of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and this will only mean that they Ohanaeze has been mobilized by the enemies of our people to sabotage the present momentum and progress being made to hold the Zoological Republic of Nigeria accountable for the violent violations of Biafrans fundamental Human Rights, the crimes against humanity and genocide it is perpetrating against the Indigenous People of Biafra.” https://.ng/2023/10/21/biafra-referendum-be-careful-not-to-stand-in-our-way-ipob-warns-ohanaeze/

The youth wing of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the Southwest region has taken a swipe at their counterparts in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over the ultimatum given to Governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, to return to the state from his Ibadan abode. While revealing that Akeredolu will soon return to the state, the APC youths, who converged on Akure, the state capital, yesterday, stated that there is no vacuum in the governance of the state as being insinuated. During a press briefing, the youth leader of the party in the region, Comrade Kolade Lawal, emphasised that Akeredolu’s absence from the state was solely to recuperate and regain his strength. The youth wing of the PDP had on Monday given Akeredolu a three-day ultimatum to return to the state or resign from office. “He (Akeredolu) will join us in a few days’ time, but not in line with the threat of the opposition parties. The Ondo state government does not owe a dime of salary. The governor is in Ibadan. It is important for him to rest. “Activities of governance are ongoing. He is fast recuperating. He had Zoom meetings with Obas and other groups. He has been talking to people. “We are optimistic that he will soon make a complete recovery and physically join us. In the story of creation, even God rested on the seventh day, recognising the importance of rest and rejuvenation. “The decision of Governor Akeredolu to seek rest and adjust his normal work schedule to allow him to fully recover is a testament to his human nature, reminding us that even leaders are not exempted from the trials of flesh and blood. “Let’s not forget the days of Mr. Governor’s struggle for us. He stood firm and defended Ondo State and the Southwest as a whole when herdsmen went on a killing spree around here. He has been a strong pillar and voice for the voiceless. We owe him this understanding and trust. He’s been a leader for all season,” he said. https://.ng/2023/10/20/south-west-apc-youths-slam-pdp-over-ultimatum-to-akeredolu/

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned resident doctors in Abuja against threatening to embark on industrial action. Wike said he would not pay doctors who embark on strike while he’s a minister, adding that he’s ready to contend with them in court. Addressing resident doctors, Wike said he would make more money when they embark on industrial action. “Make your recommendations, and we will see the ones we can do and those we can’t do. Don’t threaten me with a strike because I don’t like it. When you go on strike, I save money; even if you come back, I won’t pay; we will determine it in court. “It’s not about promises but the reality on ground, I don’t believe in theory,” Wike said. Recently, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, have been on-and-off industrial actions due to the Federal Government’s failure to meet its demands. The doctors’ demands, among many others, include the immediate payment of the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), tangible steps on the “upward review” of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), and payment of all salary arrears owed its members since 2015. The doctors also want the immediate massive recruitment of clinical staff in the hospitals and the abolishment of the bureaucratic limitations to the immediate replacement of doctors and nurses who leave the system. They also want the immediate review of hazard allowance by all the state governments as well as private tertiary health institutions where any form of residency training is done. https://.ng/2023/10/19/dont-threaten-me-with-strike-i-wont-pay-when-you-resume-wike-warns-doctors/

The Tinubu administration has said that operations of the newly approved 37 new universities by the past administration would be delayed. Recall that the president Muhammadu Buhari-led past administration had approved the licensing of 37 new universities in the country a few days before the handing over date. Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman disclosed this after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday in Abuja. He said this was in recognition of the funding needed for effective and efficient educational programmes for these universities. “A number of these new universities were approved by the past administration in its twilight. After much consideration, President Tinubu felt their take off should be staggered. “It’s not that the universities will be scrapped but that they would be looked at in terms of their areas of strength and advantages to the students. “The focus of education of the new administration will be on the skills that such institutions would impact on the youths. “We desire a university where students can graduate with skills that are not only beneficial to them but to the economic growth of the nation,” he said. The Minister said that government was equally looking at the challenges of states not being able to access the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, funds https://.ng/2023/10/19/tinubu-orders-staggered-take-off-of-37-new-universities-approved-by-buhari/

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has reacted to the inability of the Appel Court to hear his appeal against the group’s proscription as a terrorist organization. Kanu lamented that the inability of the Appeal Court to hear the suit affirms the injustice of the proscription. The administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari had proscribed IPOB due to its agitation for Biafra. But, the group had challenged its proscription in court. In March, the Abuja Court of Appeal had fixed October 16 to hear IPOB’s appeal. However, Kanu decried the court’s failure to hear IPOB’s suit challenging the proscription. The IPOB leader disclosed this through his Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, after their routine meeting at the Department of State Services, DSS. Ejimakor disclosed that the case filed in 2018 and marked CA/A/214/2018 was still listed for hearing as scheduled as of Friday when they checked the Registry. He, however, lamented that when they got to the court, the case had been removed from the Registry without any communication of such change to them. Chatting with .ng, Ejimakor said: “The case was listed for hearing last on March 7 but was adjourned the same day without a hearing because of “election petitions”. Today was the next date and by Friday when we checked the Registry, it was on the cause list. “But today, on arrival in Court, we were surprised when it was no longer on the cause list for today, and the reason again was ‘election petitions’. “I just exited from visitation with Nnamdi Kanu, and he asked me to, on his behalf, publicly decry the adjournment (earlier today) of the appeal filed by IPOB against its proscription since 2018. “The refusal to hear this appeal indirectly affirms the injustice of the proscription. “We are submitting a letter tomorrow first light morning to strongly request a new date no later than 10 days from tomorrow.” https://.ng/2023/10/17/nnamdi-kanu-laments-appeal-courts-failure-to-hear-ipobs-suit-challenging-proscription/
