The Federal Government says it is not planning to relocate the Federal Capital from Abuja to Lagos State. The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, who said this in a statement in Abuja, added that the relocation of some departments and parastatals from Abuja to Lagos was for administrative convenience and better service delivery to Nigerians. “We consider it necessary to inform Nigerians that there is no iota of truth in the interpretations given to the directives in some quarters and the unfounded claims and rumours that President Bola Tinubu is planning to relocate the Federal Capital back to Lagos. “These rumours, which first surfaced during the electioneering last year, were sponsored by political opponents looking for all manners of weapons to prevent Asiwaju Tinubu from being elected as president by a section of the country,” he said. .ng recalls that the Federal Government had announced the relocation of the department of Banking Supervision of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to Lagos State. Similarly, the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development is moving the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to its office in Lagos State. The decision was received with mixed reactions from different sections of the Nigerian population who saw it as a hidden agenda to relocate the seat of power back to Lagos State. “Those behind this renewed sordid narrative, using the recent decision of the CBN and FAAN as pretext to start another round of toxic opposition are dishonest ethnic and regional champions, trying to draw attention to themselves. “The status of Abuja as the Federal Capital has come to stay. It is backed by law,” Onanuga said. According to him, the movement was for administrative convenience because Lagos is the commercial capital and the hub of aviation business in Nigeria. https://.ng/2024/01/25/nigerian-govt-denies-relocating-federal-capital-to-lagos/

A former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has set agenda for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the proposed visit of the United States Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken. Blinken is billed to meet Tinubu and Ivory Coast President, Alassane Ouattara on Tuesday in a bid to forge a united front with key African democracies. In Abidjan, Blinken will meet Ouattara, a veteran leader, who has won US praise for strengthening democracy, before heading to Abuja to see Nigerian Tinubu. Writing on X, Sani, who represented Kaduna Central District in the 8th National Assembly, listed five areas Tinubu should focus on when meeting with the American politician. “When the US Secretary of State, Blinken visits Nigeria, our President should use the opportunity to tell him the following truths; that Nigeria is unambiguously opposed to the Israeli genocidal activities in Gaza and we want an immediate ceasefire and end to the occupation of the land of Palestine. “That the US should end all arms restrictions against our country and support our war against bandits, terrorists and kidnappers. “That the US should end all sanctions against Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger Republic and other West African countries and support ECOWAS’ peaceful efforts to democratic transitions. “That the US should pay reparations to Nigeria and other African and Caribbean countries for their centuries of Trans-Atlantic slave trade and exploitation.” https://.ng/2024/01/23/us-secretary-of-state-visit-shehu-sani-lists-five-things-tinubu-should-tell-blinken/

The Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has called on the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to conduct local government elections as required by the constitution. Okocha, who made the call while addressing journalists after a visit to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, by members of the Inter Party Advisory Committee, IPAC, in the state on Thursday, noted that the tenure of the serving LGA chairmen is due to elapse in a few months. He said the APC is ready to contest the LGA election. Okocha said, “I thought that I should also use this opportunity to call on the Rivers State Government to add to the calls that we have made for an election to be conducted because the constitution allows for an election after a certain period of time. “And the tenure of the serving councils today will expire in a few months and of course the process has to be put in place because the law also says there should be reasonable time for the advanced notification of parties for the election. “And we want to use this opportunity to let the governor know that it is not business as usual. “In fact, the Supreme Court has made a pronouncement that the use of caretaker arrangements in local governments is an aberration. “We are not going to boycott elections this time around; it was a mistake that was done before, it will never happen again.” He expressed confidence in the RSIEC, led by Adolphus Enebeli, a retired Justice of the Rivers State High Court. https://.ng/2024/01/20/rivers-apc-asks-gov-fubara-to-conduct-lga-election/

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has assured that no project would stop under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Wike expressed hope that some of the ongoing projects would be completed and commissioned by Tinubu before December 2024. The minister disclosed this after an inspection your of some projects across the FCT on Thursday. He said: “Since President Tinubu came on board, no work has stopped in all the sites. There are so many of these sites, but it will be difficult to take them all at the same time. “We believe that after May, and before December, some of the projects will be handed over to the members of the public. “The inspection is part of our routine inspection of ongoing projects, particularly those we have promised the public that God willing, by May this year, the projects will have been completed. “What we did today was to go round to see for ourselves whether the contractors are meeting up with expectations.” https://.ng/2024/01/19/no-project-will-stop-under-tinubu-govt-wike/

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, has asked President Bola Tinubu to fulfil his campaign promises to Nigerians by tackling the rampant insecurity in the country. Obi, who, on Tuesday, expressed deep concern over what he described as a surge of violence spreading through the Federal Capital Territory, warned that no foreign investor or partner would like to invest in Nigeria, given the situation the country has found itself in. According to him, the recent killings of two abducted young girls in Abuja made it more depressing, stressing that it is now time for the leaders to take all forms of serious measures to tackle the situation. In a statement issued on his X handle on Tuesday, the former Anambra State governor lamented that insecurity worsened under the past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, who campaigned and won the elections with the promise of tackling security, the economy and corruption. “As terror attacks, banditry, kidnappings and violence continue to rage through the country, it is more concerning now with the surge of violence spreading through the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. “The recent killings of two abducted young girls in Abuja make it more depressing and urgent. It is now time for we, the leaders, to take all forms of serious measures to tackle the situation. It is unfortunate that President Muhammadu Buhari, in 2015, campaigned and won the elections on three items; Security, Economy and Corruption (SEC). “After his eight years in office, the situation has worsened in all three areas. The present administration, on assuming office, promised to deal decisively with the same situation – Security, Economy and Corruption. Today, however, the situation is getting even worse than ever. “At the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association held in Lagos in August 2022, the then Vice Presidential candidate, Sen Kashim Shettima, categorically stated that if APC is elected, he as Vice President would be in charge of security, while the President as an expert in economy would handle the economy. “Nigerians, therefore, now implore them to fulfil their campaign promises. Even if they do not achieve 100% results, we want to see 100% effort. “It is now time to stop all forms of foreign trips from people in government until we deal with the ugly situation facing us at home. No foreign investor or partner will like to invest in Nigeria, with the situation we now find ourselves in. “We must make sincere efforts to end the spread of violence and insecurity in our nation in order to make any meaningful progress.” https://.ng/2024/01/17/you-promised-to-handle-security-peter-obi-reminds-vp-shettima/

The FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, has blamed Chairmen of the six area councils for the ongoing strike by primary school teachers in the territory. Wike, who addressed journalists in Abuja on Tuesday shortly before a close door emergency meeting with security agencies and the Chairmen, said the local council officials have not lived up to their responsibilities. The FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers on Sunday directed primary school teachers to proceed on an indefinite strike from Jan. 15. The strike is a continuation of an earlier one suspended by the union in 2023 over non-payment of 40 per cent Peculiar Allowance and 25 months minimum wage arrears, among other issues. The NUT suspended the strike on Oct. 2, 2023, to allow for the resolution of the issues within six weeks but nothing was done. The minister has now blamed the lingering strike on the Chairmen and urged them to be more alive to their duties. “Recently the NUT has embarked on strike; it is not because of our fault, it is the Councils’ Chairmen’s fault because primary schools are under the purview of the area councils. “Again, it will look as if the ministers are doing nothing, but that is not our responsibility,” Wike said. He, however, said they could not afford to fold their hands over the strike, adding that he had invited the striking teachers for a meeting to resolve the problems. “Council Chairmen should know that they must wake up to their responsibilities,” the minister added. https://.ng/2024/01/16/fct-teachers-strike-wike-blames-area-councils-chairmen/

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says the FCT Administration is taking steps to address security challenges affecting some sections of the territory. Wike gave the assurance while addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, before a closed-door emergency meeting with security agencies and other critical stakeholders in the FCT. There has been a spike in the abduction and killing of residents by bandits, especially in Kuje and Bwari Area Councils. The minister, who acknowledged the challenges, urged residents not to panic, as the government has taken measures to address the ugly situation. “All of us are aware of the security situation in FCT, particularly in Bwari and some other areas where we have witnessed security challenges. “Yes, I am aware that sometimes too, the press overblows what is happening but all of us are concerned and we owe a duty to make sure that FCT is safe. “We will do all we can, and we assure Nigerians who reside here that there is no need for panic. We are taking every step to make sure that the challenges are resolved,” he said. The minister explained that the meeting was to assess the security challenges in the FCT and adopt practical solutions. He said the meeting was expanded to include the Chairmen of the six area councils because they also have a responsibility to ensure peace and security in their areas. “So, we will put our heads together to come up with solutions; we are not sleeping, the security agencies are not sleeping, we will provide every support that they require to allay the fears of the residents,” he said. https://.ng/2024/01/16/insecurity-do-not-panic-wike-tells-abuja-residents/

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a courageous leader who shunned a series of pressures to interfere in the governorship elections judgement in the Supreme Court. Yusuf noted with great pleasure how Tinubu and his Deputy, Senator Kashim Shattima, refused to interfere in the apex court judgement despite stiff pressure from disgruntled quarters. Governor Yusuf, who was referring to efforts by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje to allegedly use the Presidency to influence the Supreme Court judgement in favour of his All Progressives Congress gubernatorial candidate, Yusuf Gawuna, said the insistent refusals of Tinubu and his Vice Kashim Shettima shows that Nigeria is truly in good hands. Similarly, Yusuf extended hands of friendship to his arch-opponent, Dr Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the APC gubernatorial candidate who lost in the Supreme Court, saying it is time to build Kano as politicking is now over. He said now is the time for everybody, regardless of party platforms, to join hands with his administration to move Kano forward. He said, “As a true democrat and progressive, I called on my opponents and their supporters to join hands with me in the crusade of developing our dear state Kano for the betterment of its citizens.” “People of Kano needs leaders with vision, passion, zeal, and commitment of initiating projects, policies and programmes that have direct bearing to their lives in all facets of human endeavors, as such the APC Gubernatorial Candidate, Mallam Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, should join hands with me to make Kano proud.” The governor, who commended the Kano people for their support, steadfastness, prayers, sacrifices and brevity in affirming what they have elected, and the Supreme Court Judges for upholding the glory of the Judiciary, also thanked God for giving him the highest support. He also appreciated NNPP leaders at all levels particularly the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Sen. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has said President Bola Tinubu took a lot of risk appointing him minister. Wike said people protested against Tinubu’s decision but the president “stood his ground.” He spoke in his country home, Rumueprikom in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the Rivers State. The immediate past governor of Rivers State said he’s more concerned about playing politics of unity in the state. According to Wike: “Let’s move forward for the interest of the state. That is important. I took the decision and you listened to me. “I want you to also listen to me now. Let’s accept what Mr. President has said. It is in the interest of Rivers and Nigeria in general. “It may not be the best but there is no option. Mr. President took a lot of risk to give me the position of Minister of FCT. People protested but he stood firm. If he could do that, you too should accept his decision. “When we came back from Abuja, within the next 48 hours, the speaker and his people took the decision to obey Mr. President without attaching any condition. I thank Mr. Speaker and other members for respecting Mr. President. “Whether you are APC or PDP or you don’t belong to any of the parties, we owe a duty to give Mr. President support to move this country forward. Some people said I betrayed PDP, but I never betrayed PDP. “We stood firm and told Nigerians we wouldn’t do this if this were not done. The Accountant General of the Federation, AGF, Oluwatoyin Madein has distanced herself and her office from the illegal transfer of N585.2 million to a private account by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu. The Minister has been enmeshed in criticisms for flagrant violation of Nigeria’s Financial Regulations 2009, which emphasises separating public and personal money in government transactions. According to Nigerian laws, “Personal money shall in no circumstances be paid into a government bank account, nor shall any public money be paid into a private account, Minister Edu clearly violates this section”, the AGF’s office said. The law further reads, “Any officer who pays public money into a private account is deemed to have done so with fraudulent intention.” Clearly, the law stipulates this to prevent fraud in government-related business. But in violation of this popular position of the law, Mrs Edu transferred over half a billion into a private account. Defending the act, Mrs Edu, through her media aide, Rasheed Zubair, last Friday, said the payment of the N585.2 million into a private account is legal in the country’s civil service even though .ng has not been able to establish the section of the law the minister is relying upon. In his statement, Zubair said, “It is legal in civil service for a staff, the project accountant, to be paid and use the same funds legally and retire same with all receipts and evidence after the project or programme is completed,” Reacting to the matter, the Accountant General of the federation through her Director of Press, Bawa Mokwa, explained that her office does not make payments on behalf of any Ministry, Department or Agencies of government for projects and programmes implementation. She added that allocations are released to self-accounting MDAs in line with the budget, and such MDAs are responsible for the implementation of their projects and payments for such projects. She further explained that, although her office received the said request from the Ministry, it did not carry out the payment. However, the Ministry was told the appropriate steps to take in making such payments in line with the established payment procedure. “In such situations, payments are usually processed by the affected Ministries as self-accounting entities and no bulk payment is supposed to be made to an individual’s account in the name of the Project Accountant. “Such payment should be sent to the beneficiaries through their verified bank accounts.” Dr. Madein, however, insisted on upholding the principles of accountability and transparency in the management of public finances. https://.ng/2024/01/07/accountant-general-distances-office-from-minister-edus-illegal-transfer-of-n585-2-million/

Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami has identified ways Nigerians can protect their Google accounts from hackers. Pantami disclosed this via his X handle on Friday amid a discovery that hackers could access Google mails without having to use users’ passwords. An analysis from a security firm found that a dangerous form of malware uses third-party cookies to gain unauthorised access to people’s private data. However, Google said it is currently in the process of cracking down on third-party cookies. “We routinely upgrade our defences against such techniques and to secure users who fall victim to malware. In this instance, Google has taken action to secure any compromised accounts detected,” it said. Meanwhile, reacting to the development, Pantami stated that Google account users in Nigeria should be careful in accepting “cookies” unnecessarily. He added that Nigerians should be cyber smart, noting that Google users can protect accounts by “signing out” on an affected or suspicious device. “Hackers use the process of accepting cookies as displayed when you are browsing. Ordinarily, cookies are beneficial. However, be careful in accepting “cookies” unnecessarily; “Google acknowledged the vulnerability and challenges associated with it and said it was cracking down on third-party cookies; “Remember, Google Chrome is the world’s most popular web browser, with a market share of over 60 per cent last year. As a result, there is so much attention to it. Be cyber smart, please. “You can also protect your accounts by ‘signing out’ on an affected or suspicious device. “Users can continually remove any malware from their smart devices and enable ‘enhanced safe browsing’ in Chrome to protect against phishing and malware downloads, among others; “Remember, we have over 1.8 billion Gmail users globally. Almost 24 per cent of the world population patronises it. It has many benefits, including the security control protocols, and your email is safely stored in the cloud; “Finally, always remember that no system is 100 per cent secure in the world. Always be cyber smart”, he said. https://.ng/2024/01/06/how-to-protect-google-accounts-against-hackers-ex-minister-pantami-advises-nigerians/

The counsels also informed the court that they are appearing for two different sets of clerks, a situation which created a rowdy session in the court. One of the lawyers from Ehie’s camp, who did not want to be named, explained that due to the conflicting legal representation, the judge advised them to sort themselves out and return to court with the rightful person to represent the defendants. .ng recalls that Fubara had approached the Rivers State High Court to stop the Rivers State House of Assembly from proceeding with the impeachment process against him, pending the hearing and determination of the suit. https://.ng/2023/12/05/fubara-vs-assembly-case-adjourned-as-speakers-clash-in-court/

Nigerian singer and songwriter Sadiq Onifade, popularly known as WurlD, has explained why he gave Davido his song, ‘Blow My Mind’. He said he wrote the song which Davido released with American R&B star Chris Brown in 2019. Speaking in a recent interview with 3Music TV, Accra, Ghana, WurlD said he gave the duo the song because it was “a song I didn’t have a use for at the time”. He said, “It [giving ‘Blow My Mind’ to Davido] wasn’t planned. I was in Lagos promoting my project, ‘Love Is Contagious’, and I got a call from my guy, producer Shizzi… It was even one of those things I didn’t plan for because I was gonna use the song myself. I wanted to get some features on the record, but I was promoting a new project, and I didn’t have time. “I didn’t have a use for ‘Blow My Mind’ at that time. Davido and Chris Brown, it’s just a beautiful thing to lend my art with another artiste and at the same time and see how well the song is done.” https://.ng/2023/12/05/why-i-gave-davido-my-song-blow-my-mind-wurld/
