ASUU dismisses FG’s threat to sack lecturers. The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said the Federal Government’s December 4 ultimatum issued to universities teachers to return to the classrooms is a clear indication that the government is not committed to implementing any of the resolutions it reached with the union. While reacting to the threat of the Federal Government to sack the lecturers if they fail to call off their five-month strike by Wednesday nest week, ASUU National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu, said the union was shocked that the government could have such plan when there was a shortfall of 60,000 lecturers in Nigerian universities, owing to the government’s failure to employ enough teachers. He added that the threat would not hinder the union’s determination to ensure that Nigerian universities were well funded. He said, “It is a pity if the Federal Government is not willing to perfect the resolutions reached with the union. This is why we find it difficult to trust our leaders by their words. How can someone be threatening to sack lecturers when universities are already short-staffed by almost 60,000? We are not in a military era. The military tried it and failed. This one will fail again. They can re-open the schools. ASUU did not shut the universities; it was the school management that ordered the students to go back home.” ASUU added that the FG was wasting the time of Nigerians and youths in the country by failing to perfect the resolutions so that classes could resume in the schools. Making reference to the failure of the government to honour the agreements it entered with resident doctors and health workers after they suspended their strikes, the union said it had reasons to be wary of the government, adding that the threat was an insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians who were waiting for the government for a positive reaction. “With the latest action, the government has shown that it is not committed to all it has been saying. We are saying that since we agreed at the meeting that the sum of N200bn is for 2012 and 2013 revitalisation, the government should deposit same in the Central Bank of Nigerian. We are already in November and December is around the corner. If they don’t do that now, when do they want to do it?” Aremu said. www.punchng.com/news/ASUU-dismisses-fgs-threat-to-sack-lecturers/

Kwankwaso is currently seating on the state with the highest local govt.44 lga that's a huge advantage for APC |
ABUJA- Following yesterday’s defection of the G-5 governors and the Abubakar Kawu Baraje-led nPDP to the All Progressive Congress, APC, Vanguard learnt that the APC is planning to present Governors Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State and Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State as its candidates for the 2015 Presidential election. Vanguard gathered that the party wants to take advantage of Fashola’s performance in Lagos State and Kwankwaso’s influence as a governor of the northern state of Kano. According to a source, although the candidates are both Muslims, the party hopes the feat recorded by the Moshood Abiola/Babagana Kingibe 1993 ticket, before the election was annulled, will be repeated. Another option for the party, the source added, is the drafting of Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State into the race for his achievements, popularity and acceptability in the country. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/2015-apc-mulls-kwankwaso-fashola-ticket-2015-presidential-election/

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has condemned the Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, over his comments that the union is making new “outrageous” demands, describing it as a lie. The union said it had only asked President Goodluck Jonathan to facilitate the endorsement of resolutions reached with him and to also be signed by top government official preferably the Attorney-General of the Federation but not a permanent secretary. National Treasurer of ASUU, Dr. Ademola Aremu, stated the position of the union while speaking in Ibadan on Wednesday. Aremu praised the intervention of Jonathan but pointed out that some of the resolutions reached with him were not contained in the letter sent to the union. ASUU said its representative and President of Nigeria Labour Congress should stand as witnesses when the document was to be signed. The union added that it wanted the N200bn agreed as 2013 revitalisation fund for public universities to be kept with the Central Bank of Nigeria and disbursed to the benefiting universities. Aremu said Wike should have told Nigerians that apart from the N30bn earned allowances released for university staff, the government had yet to release any other fund. He said, “We are not making fresh demands. In fact, the National Executive Council of the union would have suspended the strike but the concern of our congresses is that many of the things agreed with the President, during the November 4 meeting, were not included in the letter signed by a permanent secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Mark Nwobiala.” He promised that the strike would end as soon as the omissions were corrected in the new resolution. www.punchng.com/news/fresh-demands-ASUU-accuses-education-minister-of-lying/

ABUJA — The Federal Government, yesterday, condemned the new conditions which Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, insists must be met before the five-month old strike could be called off. The three conditions were payment of four months salaries, which accumulated during the period of the strike; immediate implementation of the N1.2 trillion offered by the government to public universities, starting with the release of N100 billion this year and the balance of N1.1 trillion to be spread over five years from 2014. The union also demanded that the salary arrears must not be paid in piecemeal. These were some of the resolutions reached by members of the National Executive Council, NEC, of the union that met in Kano on Friday. Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, condemned the new conditions but assured that he would present them before President Goodluck Jonathan.www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/fg-condemns-asuus-new-demands/

A 75-year-old man, Fashola Fakorede, on Thursday urged a Customary Court, in the Lagos suburb of Igando, to dissolve his marriage to his wife, Funke, 49, for allegedly beating him. Fakorede told the Nigerian customary court that his wife had turned him into a punching bag and also inflicted injuries over his body. “My wife wants to kill me. She beats me every day. I don’t want to die now, save my life. My wife always beats me if I asked of food or anything. She has turned it to a routine affair, all the scars on my body are as a result of her battery on me,’’ he said. Fakorede said his wife no longer takes care of him, adding, “she goes out and returns home at will without seeking my permission. She can go out for days and if I queried her, she will hit me with any dangerous weapon she can lay her hand on at that moment. “And my daughter is also taking her footstep, she brings home different men and my wife will not query her. So, I sent her away from my house,’’ he said. He urged the court to dissolve the union, saying that he was no longer in love with her and was tired of the regular battery, which had led to his ill-health. “I am tired of the constant beating, I am afraid this woman will kill me one day. I am not ready to die now,’’ he pleaded. Funke, a trader, denied the allegations, saying that she did not beat her husband and has always taken good care of him and respected him. The mother of three, however, accused her husband of denying the children the right to go to school. “My husband is unable to send any of his three children to secondary school. My husband is not responsible. None of our children went to secondary school, all of them stopped schooling at primary school,” she said. She said her husband had disowned his daughter, and urged the court not to grant his wish as she still loved him. “I have no anywhere to go as no man will want to marry me at my age,’’ ‘ The judge, Mr R. I. Adeyeri, adjourned the case till 25 November for further hearing. Short URL: http://www.osundefender.org/? p=132942

The Archbishop of York, John Sentamu , speaks next to the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby at the General Synod in Church House – Source: Reuters The Church of England’s governing body has voted overwhelmingly in favour of female bishops, ending a 20-year impasse that could see women ordained as senior clergy by the end of 2014. A vote on a package of measures to endorse women bishops was supported by 378 members of the General Synod while eight voted against and 25 abstained after months of behind-the-scenes talks to unite reformers and traditionalists. A year ago, a blocking minority succeeded in rejecting draft legislation on women bishops, leaving the church in crisis. That vote, lost by just six votes, was criticised by the UK parliament and one senior church official called it a “train crash”. After that, church leaders set up a committee to find common ground. Its proposals won widespread acceptance in the Synod, even among groups previously opposed. “The train is on the tracks, the train is moving forwards, and we now have some stations to pass along the way but we can begin to see the end of this particular journey,” the Bishop of Rochester James Langstaff told a news conference. The legislation will be discussed again at a meeting in February and a vote on final approval is likely in 2014. The issue of female clergy has divided global Anglicanism. Women serve as bishops in the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand but Anglican churches in many developing countries do not even ordain them as priests. Critics of female clergy say Jesus chose only men as his apostles, while supporters say it is a matter of equality. The spiritual head of the Church of England, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, supports women bishops but has struggled to unite the mother church for the world’s 80 million Anglicans on the issue. Woman in Canterbury Last year’s draft legislation failed mainly due to concerns that a code of practice to cater for parishes that objected to women bishops did not go far enough. The new recommendations would create an independent official who can intervene when traditionalist parishes complain about women bishops’ authority and guidelines for parishes whose congregations reject women’s ministry. Those in favour of the plans were warned not to “open the champagne bottles” just yet as there were still major issues to be resolved. Prime Minister David Cameron told parliament: “I strongly support women bishops and hope the Church of England takes this key step to ensure its place as a modern Church in touch with our society.” Even many traditionalists acknowledged it was time for change and to end the deadlock. Paul Benfield, of the Synod’s Anglo-Catholic group, said it was “a workable way forward”. The Church approved the ordination of women priests in 1992, but delayed making them bishops because of opposition within its previously all-male clergy. Bishops play a key role in many Christian churches because only they can ordain new clergy. Amanda Fairclough, a priest from Liverpool, said she had “no doubt one day a woman will be called by God to be the Archbishop of Canterbury”. www.thenigeriavoice.com

Men in India are already beginning to celebrate as the annual Assam Ra*pe Festival is just days away. Every non-married girl age 7-16 will have the chance to flee to safety or get ra*ped. Madhuban Ahluwalia who heads up the annual festival told reporters why the event is so important. “This is a long time tradition in Assam dating back thousands of years,” says Ahluwalia. “We rape the evil demons out of the girls, otherwise they will cheat on us and we will be forced to kill them. So it is necessary for everyone.” The Assam Festival began in 43 BC when Baalkrishan Tamil Nadu molested everyone in his village of Doomdooma. Baalkrishan Tamil Nadu is remembered every year at this event, in fact the trophy given to the man with the most rapes is called “The Baalkrishan”. 24-year-old Harikrishna Majumdar told reporters that he has been training all year for this event. “I’m going to get the most ra*pes this year. I’ve been practicing all year. I ra*pe my sister and her friends every day. I will be rape superstar number one! I will get the Baalkrishan prize this year for sure!” 12-year-old Jaitashri Majumdar told reporters she almost made it through last year’s festival without getting ra*ped. “I came so close to not getting ra*ped. I almost got to the ‘ra*pe-free-zone’ at the edge of town, but at the last minute 9 men jumped on me and molested me. Luckily I am just recovering now so I can participate in this year’s events, otherwise I would be put to death by stoning.” 34-year-old Brian Barnett from Toronto who is visiting Assam on business told reporters he will be missing the festivities this year. “My company did not tell me anything about a ra*pe festival happening while I was here. Are you serious, a ra*pe festival? I’m getting the f*ck out of this backwards country tonight.” India is second in reported rapes in the world only behind the United States, though critics are quick to point out that is only because most rapes in India go unreported. Posted by Ibukun Edu Alcohol poisoning is a very serious occurrence that could lead to a person’s death. This type of poisoning is caused by the consumption of large quantities of alcohol within a short period of time and occurs because consuming alcohol too quickly can affect a person’s breathing, body temperature, gag reflexes, and heart rate. Drinking too much in a short while can also lead to loss of consciousness. How to know when someone has alcohol poisoning their breaths become irregular they might faint vomiting skin becomes pale and clammy they become disoriented body temperature drops they might have a seizure breathing is slow When a person who is suffering alcohol poisoning is unconscious, it is important to get medical help as they could die at that stage. It is important to see a doctor before the symptoms degenerate. If you ever find yourself around a person suffering from alcohol poisoning, it is important to stay with them; such episodes usually come with gag reflexes that might cause the person to choke on their vomit and block their airways. While you should not try to make them vomit, if they do, keep them sitting up, with their back against a solid surface . If they need to lie down, turn them on their side(this is known to reduce chances of choking). What causes alcohol poisoning? Binge drinking is known to be the commonest cause of alcohol poisoning. During binge drinking, a person consumes a lot of different brands of alcohol in a short while. Sometimes, alcohol poisoning can result from binging that has gone on for a number of days; this is because even when a person has stopped drinking, alcohol is still released into their bloodstream form their stomachs and intestines, thereby causing a continuous rise in their body’s alcohol content. Normally, it takes the body at least an hour to process the alcohol content in one drink. As such, mixed drinks can contain more alcohol than is usually in one serving and take the body a longer while to process. Factors that increase the risk of alcohol poisoning When you had your last meal Alcohol tolerance levels A person’s weight and size Alcohol percentage in a drink When alcohol is combined with medication A person’s general health The amount of alcohol consumed Complications caused by alcohol poisoning Very low body temperature that could lead to a heart attack A person could inhale vomit into their lungs and not be able to breathe Seizures may occur as a result of sugar levels dropping too low Gag reflexes may cause choking Damage to the brain Dehydration Death Treatment of alcohol poisoning Intravenous supply of liquids to prevent dehydration Glucose and vitamins are usually administered to reduce the complications of the poisoning Positioning the person as described earlier to ease breathing and prevent choking In cases where a person has consumed dangerous amounts of alcohol accidentally, they may need to get their systems filtered professionally ton rid their body of the toxins and waste. There are some dangerous beliefs regarding alcohol poisoning that practise. Some people believe that by taking a long walk, you can increase the rate at which your body processes the alcohol; this belief is wrong. Some people believe they can reverse alcohol poisoning by sleeping it off, drinking coffee or taking a shower; none of these things work. You need to see a doctor. Preventing alcohol poisoning The first and most obvious prevention is to stay away from alcohol but because some types of alcohol are actually healthy when taken in small quantities, you can also drink safely and moderately (one drink a day). Younger people, especially teenagers who are experiencing their fist year in college and enjoying being free from home, need to understand that binge drinking, while it might seem like fun, can actually cut their lives short. They need to be made to understand that tolerance levels are different and competing with someone else who can keep going is by far, a bad idea. The one glass of wine that is usually prescribed as healthy for the heart, always goes with a meal, during or after your meal. This is because doctors understand the dangers that could follow drinking alcohol on an empty stomach. Also, when alcohol is taken, there’s really no need for you to rush it. Children are naturally inquisitive. Most people had their first taste of alcohol at home, when their parents were not looking. Some kids are not lucky enough to laugh about it later in life. It is important that parents learn to store alcohol far from where children will find it or lock it up somewhere. Mixing alcohol with medication Mixing alcohol with your medication can cause many problems from internal bleeding to difficulty in breathing. Some can cause nausea, dizziness and even heart problems. There are usually warnings on drugs that should not be taken on alcohol. If you cannot find anything that expressly states that you should not take alcohol with your drugs, don’t risk it.source nigeria telegram

The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State on Media and Publicity has called on the people of the state to remain calm over what he called the stage-managed protest against the November 16, governorship poll in the state. Obienyem, in a statement, yesterday, said that investigations revealed that those who protested, especially the women that pretended to be crying placards were imported into Anambra State from Osun State in five chartered luxurious buses. He said: “Chris Ngige and his group wanted protests at all costs, but when our people, who already know him for what he is, refused, they had to go to Osun State. “Even when they imported some boys from Imo State to protest as students, the Vice Chancellor of Nnandi Azikiwe University, Prof. Egboka, was alarmed when contacted on phone. He had to rush down to the school for investigations. Having discovered that those involved were not his students, he warned against those who lost and said he had checked with all his relevant officials who confirmed that the story of UNIZIK students was fallacious. We have our respects, belief and integrity.” Obienyem added that on further investigation and interrogation of the boys, they confessed that All Progressive Congress, APC people paid them N1,500 each and chartered the buses that conveyed them from Imo State to Anambra.vanguard |
For sounding expensive, Ice Prince recently missed being crowned as the brand ambassador of Unity Bank, a leading bank in the northern part of the country. The bank decided to sign the Fire of Zamani crooner as its ambassador because of his rising hip-hop brand and mainstream appeal. Things fell apart when Iceprince asked for a sign on fee of N300m which didn’t go down well with the stakeholders of the bank. A source however revealed that the bank is now speaking with Kogi born Nollywood darling Joseph Benjamin who has the Northern background they will gladly tap into.vanguard

However, a recent survey conducted by a British sex toys and lingerie retailer, Ann Summers, produced quite interesting results. We cannot call them as globally-representative, but it's certainly a fascinating look at how some women view love, sex and pornography. Check out the five facts which have been gathered: 1. Porn can benefit your relationship, your sex life. Couples who watch porn together at least once a week reported being more committed and sexually satisfied than those who watched porn together less frequently or not at all. Fifty-eight percent of women who watched porn with a partner said that it had a positive effect on their sex life - over half said that it gave them the confidence to ask for what they wanted in bed. 2. The vast majority of women don't consider watching porn to be cheating. A full 93 percent of participants reported that they wouldn't consider their partner unfaithful for watching porn. As it should be. 3. Porn helps women escape and de-stress. Over 85 percent of women reported watching porn as a "fantasy escape". A further 23 percent said it helped them relieve stress - and there's a scientific precedent for that. A study from Carnegie Mellon reports that men who looked at sexy pictures were much less stressed than those who viewed non-sexual images. Subjects who looked at the sexy images also performed 50 percent better on a math test. 4. Women are making their own amateur porn. Forty percent of respondents had made a sex tape with their current partner or an ex. (Of course, given the disturbing rise of revenge porn, it's worth remembering that intimate photographs and videos should be made and shared with caution.) 5. Most of porn-views are 18-24. Fifty-seven percent of respondents who reported enjoying porn solo belong to this age group. Do you think the results above are accurate? Naijagists.com |
The ASUU strike 2013 continues, but the latest update is good news–the union’s postponed meeting is expected to be held on November 22. The union is still expected to end the strike at the meeting, which was postponed after the sudden death of former union president Festus Iyayi. Friday’s meeting may or may not be held at Bayero University in Kano, where the meeting was slated to be originally held, an official told the Daily Independent on condition of anonymity. Union leadership said that it was never planning on canceling the meeting for good, only to hold a 7-day mourning period for Iyayi. Once the meeting is held, and provided the strike is called off, the strike would likely officially end on Monday, culminating with another meeting between union leadership and President Goodluck Jonathan. Supervisory Minister of Education Nyesom Wike over the weekend led a group of government officials to the former residence of Iyayi in Benin City on a condolence visit. Wike said that the federal government would implement all agreements it reached with the ASUU. “President Goodluck Jonathan and the entire administration are deeply pained by the sudden death of the former ASUU National President who played a key part in the negotiations between ASUU and the Federal Government,” Wike said in a statement. “We recall the significant contributions of Professor Iyayi during the 13-hour negotiations between President Jonathan and ASUU, which led to a headway in the discussions. “I want to assure the family that the ideals that the late scholar fought and died for will never be forgotten. The Federal Government will diligently implement the decisions reached in the course of negotiations with ASUU.” ASUU Strike 2013 Update: Union Expected to Hold Postponed Meeting on Friday By Zachary Stieber, Epoch Times | November 18, 2013 (ASUU-NG.org) |

He reiterated that the news of of Prof Iyayi’s sudden death came as a rude shock to the union; most painfully, Late Iyayi was on ASUU official assignment when he met his gruesome and untimely death, so there was nothing the Union could do to honour the late hero at the point than to put on hold it NEC meeting scheduled to hold in Kano. “There is strong indication that the NEC meeting will be reconvened on Saturday”. He further stated in strong term that unless ASUU leaders re-decides, the NEC meeting will hold on Saturday. When asked if the strike will actually be suspended, he said: “I think so, judging by reports from the Monday congresses we held simultaneously, the union may suspend the strike on Saturday or Sunday.” It will be recalled that ASUU had suspended indefinitely it NEC meeting where decision to either end or continue the lingering strike will be taken due to the death of Late Prof. Festus Iyayi, a former ASUU president.ngtrends.com |
