After your exams, sleepless nights, and stress is all over, right? Well this is true, you realize results day is just around the corner and questions like ‘’what if I fail, how will I cope; Did I write well enough to pass; I hope ICAN will just let me pass;’’ . Sometimes the pressure of waiting for your results feels worse than actually sitting for the exams itself.

I remember when I was writing my exams back then, once I am through with the exam, I would always wish I can get my answer script so that I can make some corrections and add to what I have written, but the funny thing is, that wish never come through, I only spend time thinking about what I didn’t do and the mistakes I made for weeks which sometimes gets me worried and sick. Then I got to understand that I don’t have the power to correct my mistake in that paper, the best I can only do is to hope for the best result and try my all I can to avoid the same mistake in my next exam.
Waiting for your exam results is stressful, there is no doubt. Here are my tips for keeping that pre-results day anxiety and make the best use of your time.


1. WHAT IS DONE IS DONE – As much as you want to, you can’t go back in time and change your answers. There is literally no point looking on ‘unofficial mark schemes’ or comparing answers. From personal experience it just makes your anxiety even worst. You only have power to plan to do better in the next diet.

2. BE POSITIVE – The big benefit is it lowers stress, a pretty useful thing when it comes to results day. If you are struggling why not do something as simple as smiling? Now for a bit of science, when you smile a chemical called endorphin is released, the stress hormone Cortisol is reduced. So the more you smile the less stressful you become!. Stay positive and believe you are capable. Know your strengths and believe in them


3. START SAVING FOR THE NEXT DIET EXAM FEES: What you need to start doing now is making plans for the next diet exams, (how to pay for exam fees, how to get necessary materials for the next stage). Doing this will free your mind from clusters while preparing for the next exam, you will be at peace when you know you are financially capable and then, you can fully concentrate on reading and passing your exams.

4. KEEP YOURSELF BUSY – If you did not write the last diet examination, now is the time to get busy and start preparing early for the next diet examination. And if you wrote the last diet exams, wishing you success. However, you also need to start preparing for your next attempt so that you can do better than you did the last diet, remember, no effort is too much and you can never be too prepared for ICAN exams. So start now and don’t procrastinate.

According to National Bureau of Statistics (NBS),
currently over 61.6 percent of young people are unemployed
in Nigeria, while at the same time employers are reporting
a critical skills shortage with less than half able to find
enough skilled entry level workers. Although most people
agree, however, only 45% believes their qualification so
far has adequately prepared them for work – clearly

well with the orals and theory, however, the last stage of the
interview was purely for practical on his use of Advanced excel,
Financial Modeling and an Accounting
Software, unfortunately, he lacks this basic
skills ......The HR of the company kept asking 'how will an
ACA not know how to use the basic accounting software,
why then are you moving around with a certificate? he said
the questions left him speechless and ashamed because he
lost his dream job.

Then he remembered I once offered him

One of the main keys to success is early preparation.

You will never go wrong when you start preparing for

something early. Many students face the disappointment of

failing the exams on their first trial while only a handful get

the satisfaction of passing all of the exams on their first attempt.

So, how do we ensure a 100% success in the exam on

our first sitting in the exams?





Well, the answer is to start preparing for it early!

Early preparation provides us with some flexibility in our study

schedule and allows room for any distraction such as

unpredictable events. As humans, we are all

When I was studying for my ATS Exam, I started

studying 5 months before the actual exam. Everyone

take a one-day break from studying every week to catch

up on all of my activities that are not study related. I would

Have you been writing ICAN exams for ages? The following tips might help you succeed this time.

1. Change your mindset/orientation: Many people are of the belief that ICAN has set out to fail students in order to keep collecting exam fees from them. This notion is at best the greatest lie of the 21st century. I have friends that passed all the exams at first attempt. If they could, you can. You need to change your mindset about this. ICAN will not deny you of your success if you merit it.

2. Prepare ahead: One secret to achieving success in life is to prepare ahead. It is never too early to start your preparation. You should start preparing for the next diet even before the results of those papers you just wrote are released.

3. Adequate coverage of the syllabus: If you always read the examiners report, you would have discovered that the examiners keep complaining that candidates do not cover the syllabus. Never try to guess the areas that will be tested. You need to cover every inch of the syllabus. If you are writing financial reporting exams, make sure you cover all the IFRSs and IASs that will be tested. It is better to go into the exam knowing a reasonable amount about most of the syllabus rather than concentrating on a few topics to the exclusion of the rest.

4. Use the right resources: I cannot overemphasize this part. Make sure you use the right materials in your preparation. You can easily download ICAN materials on their website. Try to combine them with ACCA materials because I have noticed that they are beginning to set their questions in a manner similar to that of ACCA. You can also watch free videos on www.opentuition.com. BPP and Kaplan materials are good.

5. Practice tons of past questions: Try to practise as many past questions as you can lay your hands upon. Questions are not manufactured from thin air. They are rather adapted from past questions, recycled and modified to reflect current circumstances. Past questions will get you acclimatised to the pattern in setting questions over the years. You can download ACCA past questions for additional practise. You could possibly download all the pathfinders on the ICAN website.You will get to know the common pitfalls of students by going through them. Practising as many exam-style questions as possible will be the key to passing ICAN exams. You must do questions under timed conditions and ensure you write full answers to the discussion parts as well as doing the calculations

6. Attend the right tutorial: There are many tuition houses out there claiming to be the best. Please make sure you gauge them very well before making your decision. I recommend PYE, Risk-Free and Wyse because I know they are very good. I personally believe in self-study though. I always read for professional exams on my own. But that is partly because I have an accounting background. Please attend tutorials if you think you need it.

7. Study Buddies: You can reach out to those writing the same papers as you.You can form study groups and meet to revise and practise questons. Make sure you team up with the right people, or else...

8. Pray as if you will not read and study as if you will not pray: If you believe in God, please make sure you pray as if your life depends on it. I cannot rule out the fact that prayer changes things. You need God's help to succeed, not only in ICAN exams but in every aspect of your life.

9. Composure on the exam day: Make sure you are composed on the days of the exam. Do not fidget. Try to get to the venue as early as possible. For the exam proper, make sure you allocate your time effectively and attempt every part of every question you have chosen to answer. Think carefully before you pick from the optional questions. Make sure you write legibly. There will always be some easy marks. Go for them before the complicated ones. Also, you must also follow the requirements of each question exactly.

10. Post-exam: Make sure you do not feel bad after the exam. Just forget about it. If you found it difficult, chances are that other candidates did too. Start preparing for the next one if it is not your last paper for the diet. Also do not try to compare your answers with those of other candidates. There is nothing you can do to change what you have written. The only thing to do now is to pray.

We all have a horror story about being late -- arriving late at a wedding, church service, naming ceremony etc. You're not alone, we are all guilty. So before you're late for your next ICAN exams, consider these tips for being right on time.

1. JUST ASSUME THERE WILL BE TRAFFIC ON THAT DAY: If you live in traffic prone state like Lagos state, just add two hours to your travel time. You cannot predict the traffic, so give room for it. If it final happened on your exam day, then you are covered because you have added two extra hours to your travel time. If there is no traffic on that day, then fine. After all, there is no crime in getting to exam venue too early.

2. YOU NEED TO ACCOUNT FOR TRANSITION ACTIVITIES: These are activities like traffic, getting kids out to school, parking and walking. These are tasks that consistently increase our estimates.

3. GET YOURELF ORGANIZE: Arriving early at exam center makes you to be organize because you will have time to check for your calculator, pen , docket etc. and if anyone is not available, probably you forget, then you can quickly find solution. When you are organized, notice how you feel calm instead of anxious and you find it easy remembering all you have read.

Coming from a family of chartered accountants , I think I heard about the examinations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) at a quite early age, probably from primary school. I heard all such tales about ICAN exams. I used to see ICAN exams as one monster.

To compound my fears, when I crossed from being a science student to a commercial one in second term SSS 1 in 1998, apart from mathematics, accounting was the subject I dreaded most. Thankfully, accounting, unlike math, has some theoretical parts (all those ‘name 5 types of account’, ‘what is a subsidiary book?’, etc questions), so I still managed to pass, banking on those ‘story’ aspects.

In the university, studying economics, I had option to take elective courses in departments such as Management and Accounting, Sociology, Geography, Demography and Social Statistics, and psychology.

To add insult to injury, my school’s management and accounting department was not the most organized of departments as my friends in the department used to complain about cases of loss of scripts due to the high volume of students. So I found in Sociology and Psychology departments elective allies, and the Alphas were almost always guaranteed, never mind the headache those abstract Sigmund Freud theories in Psychology 204 gave me.

I was still able to avoid accounting in the university. At least, I remember a friend's accounting exams script missing in our 200 level. That was definitely not an experience I would like to have, further fuelling my hatred for accounting.

From my interactions with folks, especially the less informed ones, I have come to observe the reason why people dread ICAN and their exams. The following are the 4 major myths about ICAN:


1. ICAN DELIBERATELY FAILS STUDENTS: Giving the failure rate recorded in ICAN exams, I can pardon people for believing this. But this is actually a lie. I personally hold that no examination body will deliberately fail you if you pass, not least ICAN. I have heard all sort of tales like ICAN fail people so as to make money from exam fees. This is a big fat lie. As far as I know – and I think I know farthest – if you score 50% in any ICAN exams, you will never fail that paper. Of course, there was a time when if you failed woefully in one subject, you will be required to rewrite other papers you passed in same diet, but this was not a secret as the system was made known in their students guideline. This system has since been jettisoned, except at the final stage when you are required to pass a number of subjects for you not to rewrite others you passed. So students should purge their mind of this erroneous belief. I never believed it anyway, and anytime I get to advise ICAN candidates, including in my first class in the ICAN center I was lecturing a while back, the first thing I do is cleanse their mind of this pessimistic mindset. How can you go to a war with a mindset that your efforts will not count? ICAN will not fail you if you pass, and there is no way you can score 50% in a subject and marked failed.

2. ICAN IS A YORUBA AFFAIR: I was having an introductory class with some ICAN students last year. They were preparing for Foundation examinations and that was their first attempt. In the process of ‘sermonizing’ on how students bandy unfounded myths around, trying to demystify their self-inflicted fears, one student from the eastern part of Nigeria asked me, ‘Oga, but I heard ICAN is a Yoruba body. Only Yoruba people do and pass it’. I laughed. I knew Nigerians are incurable ethnic wolf-criers, but I never knew it had reached that extent. I am aware Nigerians like to raise ethnic false alarm and cry tribal victimization when something doesn’t go in their favour, but I never knew such thoughts could be nursed of a professional body like ICAN. Well, I told her it’s a big fat lie. ICAN is not and can never be a Yoruba affair. Irrespective of where you come from, if you pass ICAN exams, nobody will deny you based on your tribe.

3. ICAN IS A SOUTHERN BODY: I have heard a couple of northern friends, especially those in public service, accuse ICAN of being a southern thing. For this reason, many northerners believe they are being sidelined. Many northerners prefer to go for a rival accounting body. Again, this is naked myth. Besides, northerners have being presidents of the association.

4. ICAN IS A CULT: Given the solidarity and bond that exist among ICAN members, you can forgive those that hold this myth. I have heard people say ICAN is a cult, that they only admit certain people. Naija people sha. ICAN is the most transparently run Nigerian professional body I know. Everything about it is transparent. Of course, they are like a family, with young members treating the older and senior ones with high reverence.
