Born and raised in Boko Haram captivity, four-year-old Seidu has been offered a rare chance of revival from what severe acute malnutrition that may have cost him his life. Onche Odeh writes.

The timely intervention of health workers on field mission to one of the camps for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) along the Nigeria-Niger Republic border may have saved four-year-old Danjuma Seidu from dying of complications due to severe acute malnutrition.
Seidu and his five other siblings have been traversing the rough terrains along the fringes of the two countries in search of safety after escaping from captivity under Boko Haram.

For Seidu, life has been far from pleasurable, as he lost his father shortly after he was conceived, leaving him with the tough choice of bearing the brunt of life in captivity, even as a foetus. His mother Amina, had been taken captive by Boko Haram fighters after killing the husband alongside many other males when they laid siege to their village in Baga, in Borno State. At this time, she was only one month pregnant with Seidu.
“One day, our village in Baga was attacked by Boko Haram. They killed my husband and took me and some others away to their camp close to Niger Republic. Then I was already one month pregnant with him (referring to Seidu),” Amina recounted.

Speaking during an interview with this reporter in Maiduguri, Amina said life in Boko Haram captivity was second to hell, as they were given food only once a day. For a pregnant woman who has five other kids to cater for, this may be suicidal, especially for the unborn child, as nutrition experts have said the first 1000 days of a child, beginning from the day of conception is the most important if such a child must attain full physical and mental potentials.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) the period between conception and one’s second birthday “is a unique period of opportunity when the foundations of optimum health, growth, and neurodevelopment across the lifespan are established.”

Yet too frequently in developing countries, poverty and its attendant condition, malnutrition, weaken this foundation, leading to earlier mortality and significant morbidities such as poor health, and more insidiously, substantial loss of neurodevelopmental potential.
Months after Seidu was born, the mother and some others found an escape route out of the Boko Haram camp. From there, they were rescued by men of Nigerian military forces and taken to one of the IDPs camps across the borders.

Seidu, who was already ailing from severe acute malnutrition at this point was discovered and taken into a treatment facility by health officials during one of their field visits for medical outreach to the camp.

This reporter encountered Seidu, who had turned four, five days after he was taken into the treatment facility. He looked more like a 9-month old. He had become so frail over the years, looking anaemic, with obvious signs of stunting which are manifestations of severe acute malnutrition in children.
Although, Seidu may have been left for too long before help came his way, all hope is not lost on him. Within just five days of being admitted into the facilities, he has started showing signs of recovery.

This has restored some happiness to the mother, who has borne the burden of carrying a child that just won’t grow for four years without knowing the real cause.

According to Amina, feeding the new-born and her other five children while they stayed in the camp was a big challenge. This probably may have aggravated Seidu’s already bad condition, having suffered grave nutrients deficiency right after being conceived.
For a child to have good physical and mental health, experts say the child must be fed with adequate and appropriate diets, most of which are found in available foods. Else, they say the child may suffer irreversible lifelong consequences, like low intelligence, stunting and other conditions synonymous to malnutrition.

Nutrition experts say malnutrition, if allowed to degenerate to chronic or severe stage could be “a life or death sentence.”
Abigeal Nyukuri, UNICEF’s Nutrition Specialist in Borno State who spoke on the consequences of malnutrition to the child and the nation said, “Children who suffer malnutrition have higher risk of death. It has been found that they are 11 times likely to die compared to their normal peers.”
And for those who are lucky to pull through life under the condition, she said they are likely to suffer “irreversible Brain damage and compromised intellectual capacity in adulthood,”.

Seidu may be one of few lucky children out of an estimated 2.5 million others under the age of 5 that suffer from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM ) every year in Nigeria.

The situation is even more precarious in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe where it has been estimated that not less than 440,000 Boys and Girls under the age of 5 will suffer from Severe Acute Malnutrition at the end of 2019.
“Prevalence of Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) among Boys and Girls aged below 5 Years is 11% in Borno, 13% in Yobe and 6% Adamawa,” Nyukuri said, adding that the protracted access constraints and Insecurity has made the Situation even worse in Rann (Kala Balge), South Yobe, Magumeri, Jere and Konduga LGAs.

“The poor Nutrition situation is further worsened by poor Food Security situation, sub-optimal Water, Hygiene and Sanitation Practices and high Disease Burden,” she said.

A good measure of progress is, however, being made towards pulling many more children from the crutches of death and intellectual incapacitation caused by malnutrition.

Through the Flexible Integrated and Timely (FIT) Project, a N16 billion (35 million Pound Sterling) multi-sectoral nutrition project intervention led by the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID), many cases of emerging/deteriorating nutrition-related crises are being detected in Borno through an agile nutrition surveillance system and provide timely response through the implementation of an integrated basic Nutrition package.

With FIT, DFID has established active interventions to curb malnutrition in North East Nigeria. These include Community Based Management of Acute Malnutrition, Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices, Micronutrient supplementation, Early Childhood Development, among others.
In Yobe, DFID is funding a N2.3 billion (5 million Pound Sterling) intervention project tagged, ‘Working to Improve Nutrition in Northern Nigeria (WINNN)’ to improve maternal and young child nutrition in Northern Nigeria.

If this is sustained Seidu and many other Nigerian child suffering malnutrition would be rescued while many more others would be saved from suffering it. This, however, could be achieved with absolute support from the government, the community and other partners.

Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin through his foundation, Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin Foundation (JOFF) recently gave out four cars, scholarship and cash worth N45 million on loyal workers of Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministry (C.M.D.M), Warri, Delta State, popularly called Mercy City alias ‘The Arena of Solution and Power’ alongside some members who sacrifice the little they have for the work of God and a former sex worker.

The service tagged ‘The father’s blessing’, the man of God, Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin had announced that members should come to church with a sacrifice to receive from God. Just as the man of God explains, sacrifice breaks protocol; the father’s blessings need an action to cause a reaction. In obedience it was practically seen in the service that brothers and sisters who brought their sacrifice received their blessings from God through his servants the prophet. While some gave out of their abundance, others gave their all and their widow’s might.

An empty wallet was found amongst the seeds given and the owner, Mr. Jacob Okuna said he wants God to bless him and the man of God blessed him with the sun of five hundred naira (N500, 000). As that was going on, we found a wine argots the seed, the man of God again asked the giver, Mrs. Regina Odjugo to come out as she came, we dis covered another interesting seed. The wine is for God to remember her family and the man of God blessed her with the sun of five hundred naira (N500, 000).

During the father’s blessing, the prophet blessed her with the sun five hundred naira (N500, 000) to set up a hair style business through his foundation as well. The former sex worker rededicates her life to God and accepted Jesus as her Lord and personal Saviour.

Out of the massive crowd, a secondary school student from Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene (dressed in her school uniform), Divine Sunday Dick beat all ushers and protocol; ran to the alter crying, shouting to get the attention of the man of God to help her education. Indeed her cry was heard and Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin gave her scholarship to University level and the sum of two hundred and forty-seven thousand naira (247,000) as payment of her school fees, third term up-front, out of which one hundred thousand naira (100,000) was for her school bag, uniform, stationaries etc. According to the founder of Mercy Television, one of the reasons JOFF was set up was to fight against illiteracy (War against Illiteracy).

Sister Lilian Duru Chukwu (CMDM worker - Usher/Pool attendant received five hundred naira (N500, 000) from the prophet for her dedication and sincerity to the work of God. Elder Paul Fufeyin (CMDM Development committee chairman) received Toyota Venza with one hundred thousand naira (100,000) for registration of vehicle; Pst. Gamaliel Eghagha received Toyota Camry with one hundred thousand naira (100,000) for registration of vehicle; Gideon Oro Oguma, Protocol/Personal Assistance to the man of God received Toyota Camry with one hundred thousand naira (100,000) for registration of vehicle and Nesiama Block, HOD CMDM Block Industry also received Toyota Corolla with one hundred thousand naira (100,000) for registration of vehicle from the Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin Foundation (JOFF).

For all this happened that the scripture maybe fulfilled. The father’s blessings relate things to God and it came after an action from the children of God. No one works for God without receiving a blessing….

Mr. Daniel Okunbo, 35, a Nigerian, was born without any form of identification. He laments how lack of birth registration at birth almost ruined his life. Mr. Okunbo recalled how he spent most of his life without an official identity, until few years ago. According to him, his parents never got a birth certificate for him; but told him that the year Alhaji Shehu Shagari was sworn in as the first president and commander-in-chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was when they gave birth to him. That’s how he knew about his year of birth.

His woes increased when he realized that without any official identity he could not secure a job in a firm as a security guard or a driver. He was glad to have the permanent voter’s card and other forms of identification that helped him secure admission to secondary school for his 10-year-old brilliant daughter, after she passed the Lagos State common entrance examination into public secondary school.

Thousands of Nigerians are believed to be in the same situation as Daniel. Birth registration is the official recording of the birth of a child through an administrative process of the state and is coordinated by a particular branch of government. It’s a permanent and official record of a child’s existence - evidenced by a birth certificate. A birth certificate records the full names, the parents, place of birth, date of birth and nationality.

According to the United Nations, civil registration system is the conventional data source for generating continuous and complete vital statistics on a permanent basis (UNECA, 2012). An efficient CRVS helps to create an inclusive society, protecting human rights, ensuring proper delivery of public service and good governance.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has done tremendously well to scale up birth registration in Lagos State. It sponsors and organizes seminars and conferences for organizations and government agencies; collaborating with National Population Commission (NPC) , Ministry of Health, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Ministry of Information and Culture, among others.

A special attention is required for under-five children in Nigeria. This number of children is projected to increase from 32 million in 2015 to 58 million by 2050. A huge percentage of children in Lagos State do not have their births registered. The implication is that there is no official record of their full names, parents, place of birth, date of birth and their nationality of the Nigerian child. This results in the inability to properly plan the nation’s economic and social development in line with the population growth rate due to extremely low-level of birth registration in the country.

On the critical issue of Promoting Birth Registration in Lagos, the National Orientation Agency in collaboration with UNICEF Abuja Office, recently organized an interactive session for Lagos media, at the neighbouring city of Ibadan. Some of the points treated included how to overcome the challenges of effective uptake of birth registration, with the aim of changing the narrative.

UNICEF Child Protection Specialist, Mrs. Sharon Oladiji, in her presentation highlighted the cost of not registering ones child at birth, as their access to basic services is under threat. Because they are not officially registered, the children are vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. In legal terms, they do not exist. A violation of their right goes unnoticed.

The benefits of Birth Certificate to the individual include providing legal and documentary evidence to certify a person’s existence, age, parentage, birth place, and nationality. It enables a person’s eligibility for health-care, admission into schools, voting, obtaining a passport, employment, marriage, etc. Also, it checks incidence of child abuse, child trafficking, early marriages, child labour, unlawful detention, etc. Records of deaths/death certificates provide legal evidence to inheritance of property and the rights of surviving spouses to re-marry. It is critical for the children in Lagos State: survival, health, education, social service initiatives and development goals.

The positive impact of birth/death certificate to the society also provides: Data on fertility and mortality disaggregated by age and gender;
Data on causes of death;

Relative impact of specific diseases on mortality, which can lead to policy interventions;

Data for planning in health, education, social security, insurance, etc.

It also provides indicators for monitoring population dynamics and development goals.

During the two-day media dialogue, Blessing Ejiofor, Communication Officer, UNICEF; Nwannukwu Elias Ikechukwu, deputy HOD, Vital Registration Department, NPOPC, Mr. Waheede Ishola, State Director NOA, Onche Odeh among other resource persons, exhaustively spoke on various subjects, especially assistance of the UNICEF in printing registration materials: birth certificates, Form B1, Birth and death registers. The good news, however, is that since UNICEF stepped into the printing of registration materials, Nigerian Population Commission, Lagos State, has not experienced scarcity of materials.

For every child to be identified and cared for, there is need for more awareness and the relevant agencies, including the media, need to hype their game in terms of advocacy, funding, and otherwise, to support the nation.

Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin, the General Overseer, Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministry (C.M.D.M), Warri, Delta State, Nigeria popularly called Mercy City alias ‘The Arena of Solution and Power’ while reacting to the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other foreigners living in South Africa has called on South Africans not to forget so soon that Nigeria helped their country to fight the apartheid regime financially, spiritually and otherwise that led her to become a democratic country in 1994.

The prophet during a live video on his YouTube page earlier today said “Xenophobic attack is not a good omen to South African. We must not forget so soon that Nigeria helped South Africa to fight the Apartheid regime that led her to becoming a democratic country in 1994. This led to the late Nelson Mandela emerging as the first democratically elected president of South Africa.

The South Africans are the cause of the disaster because they don’t know God and don’t have the fear of God. John 10:10: The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. King James Version (KJV) is what is going on in South Africa. Peace talks will not solve the problem.”

He added: “For peace to return to the land they should call on prophets of God to pray for them. Prophets need to come together and pray for the evils done to prophets/ministers of God. What’s happening in South Africa is not ordinary; it’s spiritual. My advice to the South Africa government is that they should go and beg prophets of God they have offended like Shepherd Bushiri amongst others for their deliverances to take place.”

According to the Tireless General, the attack however we pray will still come back. “We are all Africans and African is one. I am not happy with the attack on Africans. We are all one. When they remember the past, Nigerians needs to be pampered like egg, Nigeria did a lot for South Africa back then. I pray for the souls of the departed due to the xenophobic killings in Africa and lets South Africans seek the face of God”.

He also advised Nigerians alleged to have embarked on reprisal attacks on South African companies to stop forthwith and allow peace to reign. It was recall that at least ten Africans have been killed in attacks on foreigners in South Africa this week.

Nollywood most celebrated in-law and billionaire, Chief Ned Nwoko has assisted the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) with the sum of N10m (Ten million naira).

It was a night of fun and non-stop excitement for fun seekers when Don Sylvester Records marked its first year anniversary in Lagos over the weekend. The event tagged ‘Don Sylvester Records 1st Year Anniversary Pool Party’ took place at Spa Lavender, Mende, Maryland, Lagos featured performances from A-list musicians such as King Wadada, Adams Swag, Dr. Coach, Mazi Young, Mr. Smith from Liberia, Wonder Kid, Ozzy B, Isaac 1da, DSR Money crew amongst others.


In an exclusive interview with Chief Sylvester Chinedu Nweke, Director in Diaspora South East Zone National Youth Council of Nigeria and Chief Executive Officer, Don Sylvester Records (DSR) said its time for government to invest in the entertainment industry especially music as it’s the next biggest export of recent time.

“Nigeria’s entertainment industry is the fastest expanding major market globally and it would be a good venture if the government can tap into it. Our music industry is one of the biggest in Africa and if well managed in terms of revenue will be a huge boost to the economy as well. If the government can invest in the industry, there will be collaboration which will lead to a better structure that will favour all parties such as record label, artistes, those at the backend like engineers, the mixers, the managers, producers etc. with the right attitude, professionalism in the music industry will be attained, more money in the pockets and more creativity will spring forth” he said.

The one time manager to several Chinese firms in Nigeria also uses the medium to call on brands to support record label with sponsorship. “It’s really challenging when you write to big corporate brands for support/sponsorship but keep turning you down. It’s not easy to run a record label that’s why we are calling on supports from the governments and big brands as well”.

With over 1,500 party goers in attendance, the event got everything from dance, musical performances, drinks, food etc to a relaxing poolside for guests to unwind. Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin, the General Overseer, Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministry (C.M.D.M), Warri, Delta State, popularly called Mercy City alias ‘The Arena of Solution and Power’ has saved a seasoned journalist, Mr. Emmanuel Ogoigbe from embarking on a suicide mission.

Mr. Ogoigbe was a former staff with The Sun Newspaper, a father of seven children with an ailing wife has tried committing suicide on several occasions due to his inability to further his children education and other financial challenges. The journalist wrote letters and sent to over 30 persons whom he has known and helped either to secure jobs, financial assistance etc in the course of practicing as a journalist yet nobody replied so he thought of taking his life to put an end to his misery.

But when his letter got to Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin Foundation (JOFF), Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin and his amiable wife, Prophetess Anthonia Fufeyin saved him from committing suicide with the word of God, the Holy Bible and the sum of three million naira (N3, 000,000). The Edo state born journalist was perplexed, crying like a baby, and almost fainted while one of his daughters fainted and was revived with water of life as they never imagined such blessings from the man of God.

In appreciation to God Almighty for using the founder of Mercy Television, Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin to save him from embarking on a suicide mission, he said: “I don’t want to die anymore and I want to use this medium to call my colleagues not to think of suicide as an option. I know it’s not easy for us journalists but God will come to our rescue no matter the situation we found ourselves”.

After the financial blessings, Owomowomo 1 delivered the journalist saying the thought of committing suicide is an evil spirit. The tireless prophet admonished members to imbibe the habit of giving saying is an act of righteousness that comes from our duty as humans to help each other as giving is a strong demonstration of love towards others.

In the past 20 years, the textile industry had been in comatose and CBN promised to do everything possible with other stakeholders to revive it and reclaim the lost glory of the nation. As an indigenous manufacturer what’s your take?[i][/b][/i]

It’s a very good one from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor and what they are trying to do is good enough for reviving the textile industry but we also need the president to support the CBN because the CBN is an arm of government. The presidential intervention will go a long way. I believe it’s a step in the right direction and it’s the only opportunity for the textile industry to break forth. There has to be a synergy between the indigenous manufacturer and other group just to ensure that the money is actually given to those who need it.

[b]As an indigenous manufacturer what went wrong with the textile industry?
[i]

From my independent investigation, I think corruption is the bane of the fall. When the government tries reviving the sector, the money gets into the wrong hands and if you are not an industrialist, you stand to achieve nothing because indirectly, you’re not doing what you like but for the benefit you think you see around it. The major problem of the textile industry is first and foremost corruption. When you have access to free money and you don’t know what to do with it. Some gets the money and puts it the banks because it’s in volume and it has affected the industry. Another issue is importing competing products which is very wrong. If the government cannot come up with a blue print the CBN cannot do it alone. If you want to grow, you work with competing brands to improve yours, initiate ideas and grow yourself; there’s no way you will fail. As an industrialist keep improving on yourself but if you don’t have the machinery to work how do you improve yourself or even grow.

What has been the major challenges facing the textile industry?[/i]

A whole lot especially low cotton production, poor infrastructure such as power and transportation, smuggling and dumping of textile materials and poor access to finance. Counterfeiting, inadequate local patronage, poor high cost of production and multiple taxation are other challenges that have been facing the sector. Emefiele promised to continue to provide leadership, power hubs to CTG companies and create cotton production nationwide. He also pledged to work with relevant stakeholders to eradicate smuggling of textile materials to the country. According to him the bank had engaged 100,000 cotton farmers to cultivate 100,000 hectares of cotton for the 2019 season. My advised to CBN is that they should take every process in the sector seriously without missing any step otherwise, failure would be recorded. I want to use this medium to appeal to all stakeholders to support this initiative to reclaim our country and everybody must play a role.

How competitive are Nigerian textile products to foreign ones and how can we encourage dumping of inferior products.

The truth is Nigeria is not competing in the textile industry. We need a lot of orientation and enlightenment regards to funds, how to disburse them and more. As a Nigerian and a businessman, I feel concern, how do you feel when you go to Kano, foreigners have dominated our markets, selling smuggling textile materials and making a lot of money.

Speaking on how many artistes he has signed on his record label so far he has this to say: “I have over 30 artistes on my record label now, though more artists are begging to join but I have signed only two officially. It is like a different stroke for different folks. Because of the expenses and other things, we don’t sign more than 2 artistes at a time. Basically are always there for them especially when they sing, we promote. It’s more or less like grooming before proper signing. The difference between them and the signed artistes is that we don’t give the unsigned artistes the benefits the signed ones get, like accommodation, cars, cash, and other things” but they are still comfortable.

On the challenges of managing artists, the boss as he’s called by his artists says “yes, a lot of challenges like some artistes trying to have things done in their own ways, disappointment from producers and so many others. For instance we bought a car worth 4 million naira for an artiste, he went out with it and promised to come back the next day but didn’t until after few days I received a call from the artist that the car is burning on third mainland bridge. I left what I was doing and rushed to the scene of the incident to watch the car burnt to ashes. It might not be a challenge to others, but to me, it is because nobody likes to waste money. Another major challenge we are facing right now, is choosing artistes to be signed, because there are lots of them, and they are all exceptionally good, so it’s been difficult picking, but I always try to use my discretion”.

As the Director of the National Youth Council, Lagos branch he speaks on what it takes to be on DSR label: ‘Basically it doesn’t take much; DSR is more or less a platform for youth empowerment. That’s why we empower youths, take them off the street, there are lots of talented youths out there but no platform for them to showcase their God giving talents. Most of my colleagues in the industry advised me against signing more than one artiste at a go, but I told them, I don’t care. This is my style.

Chief Nweke says what makes DSR different from other record labels is how they live as one big family and bring decency into music. “We want to take music to the highest level, re-brand it and become the game changers. We want to add class, value and glamour to music. We are trying to bring decency into music, no drugs, no smoking, and no sex. We are trying to change something in music. We want to do things differently. Artistes are often regarded as drug addicts and tagged everything negative you can think about, but here it’s no to such lifestyle” he said.

The DSR boss plays fatherly role to his artistes by providing shelter, accommodation, monthly allowance, medication and also taking care of the artists’ extended family. Anywhere he’s invited as the CEO, he goes with his artistes. “I carry them along in everything and also clothe them, they are my children and I don’t discriminate between them, I treat them equally” he said.

Disaster hit a home in the community of Eku, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria after a fire outbreak left two dead and one battling for survival at the Eku Baptist Government Hospital. The incident which gutted two buildings and several stores destroying properties worth over N50m occurred on Saturday, 22 June, 2019. It was learnt that the fire broke out from the apartment housing the deceased woman, identified as Caroline Ugor, who was said to be a kerosene trader. While her only child is battling for life as she sustained severe fire burns during the incident.

It was gathered that the victim, who lost her life to the inferno, was a dealer in kerosene and the product was mixed with fuel unknown to her. Early on Saturday, one of her friends came to seek her help while she was preparing for the market, which happened to be the Eku Market Day. During their discussion, she noticed that one of the kegs filled with kerosene in her store was leaking and she immediately called her daughter to bring nylon to block the leakage but the child while coming with the nylon, brought a lantern, which resulted in the inferno.

According to sources “Everything in one of the buildings was destroyed before help could come. Several persons were injured. Sister Caroline was trapped in the fire and was burnt to death in the process. Her only child is also battling for life in hospital.”

Representing the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, Major General Adekunle Shodunke in his speech appreciated the movie industry’s contribution in ensuring security in Nigeria and its support for the army.

Preparations are in top gear ahead a novelty match between the Emeka Rollas’ led Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) and the General Burutai’s led Nigerian army.

Based on the assurance by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Burutai to partner with the Actors Guild of Nigeria in projecting a positive image for the country when the guild recently paid him a courtesy call in Abuja, the Nigerian army and the guild are now preparing for a friendly match to further boost their relationship.
