Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema claims Hamas' actions in Israel earlier this month were no different to what Nelson Mandela did during apartheid.

He was speaking to a crowd of pro-Palestine supporters outside the Israeli embassy in Tshwane (Pretoria).

“There is nothing wrong with what Hamas did. When you are oppressed, the only option you have is to fight and that's what Hamas is doing. They are fighting for their freedom. Mandela did the same thing. He took up their guns and fought for the freedom of the people of South Africa,” he said.

“When you are oppressed, you only have one option: confront the enemy and shoot to kill.”

This came on the same day Israeli authorities showed harrowing footage of killings and mutilations during Hamas’ rampage in southern Israel on October 7. According to The Guardian, “the government showed the 43-minute compilation in a private screening for dozens of foreign journalists at a military base in Tel Aviv on Monday to counter what it said were attempts to deny or downplay the extent of the atrocities.

“The footage, captured by security cameras, body cameras worn by the Hamas attackers, vehicle dashboard cameras, social media accounts and videos from mobile phones, left some reporters in tears. The material included the killing of children and decapitation of some victims.”

Malema said: “Do not kiss the enemy. Why do you want to kiss the enemy? People came, took the land of the Palestinians. Every year they extend their occupation. When you look at the map of Palestine, there is nothing left of land. The people of Palestine have got nothing to lose but their chains.

“They must stand up and fight for their freedom. Condemning Hamas is an act of cowardice. I heard some fools saying, ‘We can’t compare Hamas with Mandela'. He was shooting to kill, to liberate you. He was doing exactly what Hamas is doing. OR Tambo did the same thing. Chris Hani did the same thing. Winnie Mandela did the same thing. Steve Biko did the same thing. There is nothing [wrong] with what Hamas is doing.”

Malema also said Israelis were terrorists for allegedly killing innocents in the blast last week at Gaza City’s al-Ahli Baptist Hospital which Hamas claimed was Israel's actions.

Malema said his party would fund and arm Hamas if they are elected next year.

“When the EFF takes over next year (South Africa general elections), it is going to arm Hamas and make sure they have the necessary equipment to fight for their freedom.

“Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu is a No 1 terrorist and he must be declared [a terrorist] everywhere he goes. He must never know peace. He is a terrorist and murderer committing genocide in Palestine in the name of attacking Hamas, yet he is attacking innocent women and children and the world must fight against terrorists.”

Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) leader Julius Malema has called for a boycott of all products from Israel and has called on American-born franchise, McDonald’s South Africa to distance itself from the actions of the global business.

This, after McDonald’s in Israel said it would provide soldiers in the country with free meals amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

However, the US burger giant’s franchises in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Turkey issued statements disassociating themselves from the Israeli franchise.

Addressing supporters and members at the march calling for the closure of the Israeli Embassy in Pretoria, Malema gave the franchise in South Africa until the end of the month to distance itself from the incident.

“Comrades, call to action. McDonald’s is giving the soldiers of Israel food in Israel. We want McDonald’s South Africa to distance itself from what is happening in Israel. They’ve got until the end of this month to issue a statement distancing themselves from what McDonald’s is doing, giving murderers food to murder women and children.”

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has gazetted proposed amendments to the regulations governing the recruitment of new police officers in the country – clearing up the rules around officers having tattoos.

The proposals come after police minister Bheki Cele caused a small storm in 2022 by likening people with tattoos to gangsters and criminals, adding that these individuals would not qualify as new recruits to the SAPS.

“When you have a tattoo, we don’t hire you because you have a tendency of being a gangster,” he said at the time.

The statement sparked outrage among the inked members of society who took exception to being called gangsters. There were even reports of hopeful police recruits whose dreams were dashed by the realisation.

While Cele went on to explain to parliament that the whole matter had to do with perceptions in communities the SAPS needs to serve, the new proposed amendments will effectively codify the position and explanation.

The proposed SAPS recruitment rules state that a candidate can have tattoos, but they cannot be visible while in uniform, and they cannot be of a nature that is irreconcilable with the objective of the service.

The first requirement is that any tattoo a candidate has may not be visible when they are wearing or dressed in uniform.

The second requirement is that, even if the tattoo is not visible in uniform, the tattoo itself cannot be of a nature that is contrary or stands against the objectives of the police service.

“For instance, if the person takes off their shirt and has a tattoo, it must not be irreconcilable with the objectives of the service,” it said.

These rules apply to recruits and reservists, the SAPS said, adding that this restriction is a reasonable limitation of freedoms enshrined in the Bill of Rights, given the nature of the police force’s duties.

“Visible tattoos may negatively affect the perception and neutrality of members as viewed by the community.

“It may also be necessary to consider that rules of this nature do not only relate to the fact that an individual may choose to have a tattoo but also to the fact that the presence of tattoos influences the perception of members by communities that we are required to serve and may, in turn, affect the ability of members to perform their duties.”


Other changes

While the restrictions on tattoos have been kept in place in the proposed amendments, other limitations have been removed.

The proposed changes remove the requirement that SAPS members “undertake to not wear any religious or cultural adornment or symbol”, with labour unions viewing this as unconstitutional.

There is also debate around the age of recruitment. As it currently stands in the gazette, new recruits have to be between the age of 18 and 30 to qualify. However, unions are arguing for this to be increased to 35 to align with the definition of “youth” in the National Youth Development Agency Act.
