The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) on Monday vowed that should they be elected to govern South Africa in the 2024 general elections, they will send arms to Hamas in their fight against Israel.

Thousands of party supporters were picketing outside the Israeli embassy in the capital Pretoria on Monday.

The EFF said the demonstration is in solidarity with Palestine amid a bloody conflict with the state of Israel in Gaza.

A statement from South Africa Rugby said: “We are aware of the allegation, which we take very seriously, and are reviewing the available evidence.

Curry refused to comment on what was said post-match, though did confirm that he felt Mbonambi’s remark had crossed the line.

Both teams are able to refer any incident of concern to the match citing commissioner within 24 hours of the final whistle. The citing officer then has 12 hours to determine if they will lay in charges.

Pretoria-based defence group Milkor’s 380 drone underwent a successful first test flight three years and seven months after the project kicked off.

The Milkor 380 is the largest drone built in Africa, with a wingspan of 18.6 metres, a continuous flight time of up to 35 hours, a range of up to 2,000km, and a maximum altitude of 9,000 metres.

The company is now conducting regular test flights and hopes to have four drones ready for the market by the end of 2023.

The Milkor 380 is controlled from the ground by three people, including a pilot, a commander, and someone to control the equipment onboard.

Daniël du Plessis, business development manager at Milkor, said the drone’s size is critical as it determines what equipment it can carry.

“Some of the sensors with which it is equipped are heavy. A larger drone can accommodate more of them and even weapons,”

The infrared and high-resolution cameras onboard allow the Milkor 380 to undertake observation, intelligence gathering, reconnaissance, and offensive missions.

It can also be used for conservation, combating land and sea poaching, and border control.

Milkor promotes the drone as a complete observation system. It offers a control room, maintenance programmes, logistics support for fuel and parts, operator training, and satellite and ground-based communication infrastructure.

The company doesn’t specify a price for the drone, as this varies based on each customer’s specifications. Milkor’s drones are entirely built in South Africa.

The company began testing the Milkor 380 with the South African Air Force in Cape Town.

Using drones for security in South Africa has received a big push recently.

Earlier this month, the newly-launched border management authority announced it would procure technology, including drones, to eliminate crime, lawlessness and corruption at South Africa’s 72 ports of entry.

In May 2023, the Gauteng Department of e-Government revealed it had set a budget of R1.7 billion to buy drones, camera surveillance, and other crime-fighting tech.

SA President Cyril Ramaphosa on Saturday arrived at Cairo International Airport in Egypt for the Cairo Summit for Peace. He is the only African president invited.

In a statement, the presidency says the summit will discuss the ongoing escalation of the conflict in Israel and the Gaza Strip, the urgent need for humanitarian support and make a call for the resumption of the peace process.

“South Africa stands ready to join the global effort that will bring about lasting peace to the Middle East,” reads the statement.

South Africa's foreign minister has been criticized for holding a phone call with the leader of Hamas just 10 days after the Palestinian militant group launched a deadly attack on Israel.

While the South African government has long expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people, a South African Jewish organization says the phone call indicates the minister “supports” Hamas.

Naledi Pandor, formally South Africa's minister of international relations and cooperation (DIRCO), said in a statement that she held a call with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh at his request to “discuss getting humanitarian aid into Palestine.”

DIRCO said that contrary to false reports the minister did not express support for Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7 that saw 1,400 people killed and almost 200 Israelis taken hostage.

Rather, in keeping with her government’s position, the department said she “reiterated South Africa’s solidarity and support” for the Palestinian people and “expressed sadness and regret for the loss of innocent lives on both sides.”

But Karen Milner, the chairperson of South Africa’s Jewish Board of Deputies, said the call showed the minister had taken a side.

“The South African Jewish Board of deputies and the South African Jewish community is horrified at the fact that Naledi Pandor, the minister of foreign affairs for South Africa, had a call with Hamas soon after the atrocious and horrific attack by Hamas on Israel,” said Milner.

She said Pandor’s actions suggested Pandor “supports” Hamas.

“The minister of foreign affairs calling a Hamas leader at the same time as every other country in the free world has condemned the Hamas attacks shows that Minister Pandor has taken a side and has dragged South Africa into a very, very dangerous situation as she supports Hamas militants,” Milner said.

Earlier this week, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa issued his condolences to the people of Israel but also pledged solidarity with the Palestinians, saying they were waging a “just struggle.” He said South Africa supports a two-state solution and has offered his country’s help with mediation.

South Africa’s governing party, the African National Congress, has often drawn what it says are parallels between Black South Africans’ struggle against the racist white apartheid regime and the situation in the Middle East. Pandor has previously called for Israel to be designated “an apartheid state.”

Bob Wekesa, a senior lecturer at the University of Witswatersrand in Johannesburg, said while usually the government deals with the Palestinian Authority, it was clear the government had also taken a position “in support of Hamas.”

“I think on the diplomatic front, it is strange that DIRCO would take a call from Hamas, given that it’s not a formal organization,” he said, referring to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation. “In any case, it has been declared — or labeled, or classified — as a terrorist group.”
