Gunmen have killed an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) identified as "Agbalagba" in Ndiegoro, in Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State, IGBERETV reports.

Agbalagba, an indigene of Ebonyi State, who was reportedly attached to the Ndiegoro Police Division was said to be due for retirement by September. Agbalagba led his patrol team when he was gruesomely murdered with his head cut off along East Road at about 5am on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

The ASP and his team were said to be on an early morning stop-and-search operation at Cameroon road by East Street when the gunmen swooped on them unawares.

It was gathered that the gunmen, after killing and beheading the officer, made away with his gun and police uniform.

A source at the State Command confirmed the incident, adding that investigation into the matter has commenced.

A police source linked the killing of the ASP to a notorious criminal group whose leader was killed during a gun battle on Sunday, April 23, 2023.

It was gathered that the leader of the gang who is popularly known in the area as JT met his waterloo in a gun battle with the police when he was sighted carrying out criminal activities.

A source revealed that JT and his gang, on sighting the police officers, opened fire and tried to flee but the policemen gave them a hot chase up to the Orji Uzor-Kalu bridge linking Ngwa Road, Pepples Road and Akpu Road. On seeing the determination of the police to get him arrested, JT jumped into the Aba River to try to escape through the Ovom/Azumini link of the river but he was gunned down right inside the river.

JT's death was celebrated by the residents, but the killing of the ASP has led to tension in the area as the criminals have threatened that the police and civilians would be targeted.

“With what we heard, they said they have declared war on the police and we, the residents. I don't know what happened but the way they killed the ASP, with his head removed and during the murderous act shows that this city needs serious attention now,” a source said.

A 35-year-old suspected ritualist, Ifasoji Ayangbesan, who was arrested for allegedly killing and dismembering a young lady identified as Oyindamola Adeyemi, has confessed that he bought two human legs at the rate of N20,000, IGBERETV reports.

Last week, the Ogun state police command released a statement announcing Ayangbesan's arrest and accused him of presenting N1 million bribe to police officers so he can be left off the hook.

While being paraded before newsmen on Wednesday, May 3, Ayangbesan denied taking part in the killing of the victim who was reportedly murdered on January 28, 2023. He claimed to be a herbalist and not a ritualist.

“I bought two fresh human legs, but I was not involved in the murder of the victim. I was approached by my friend, Lukman, who told me he had a pair of legs to sell. Though I told him I did not need them, he convinced me to use them for ritual to better my life, and I agreed. I, however, told him I did not know how to make money rituals as I was not taught that as a traditionalist. He then referred me to his friend from Oye, popularly known as Egbeji in Isiwo.

"After I was taught how to go about it, I burnt the legs and kept them in my house with plans to complete the ritual when I returned from Ajah because I had a job to do there.

"However, my daughter called me while I was at Ajah that the police had come to the house looking for me. So, I later sneaked in and took away the burnt legs so that I would not be caught with any evidence because I heard that Lukman had been arrested and he had mentioned my involvement in the case.”

On the allegation of bribing police, Ayangbesan said that a lawyer had instructed him to provide N10 million to secure his release, but he was only able to gather N1 million.

“I did not offer the police any bribe. When I heard that the police were on the lookout for me, a lawyer told me to get N10 million to set myself free, but I told him I could not raise the money. However, I was able to raise N1 million. Unfortunately for me, the lawyer claimed that I had informed someone about him asking me for money. He then instructed me to place the money in front of him and he took a picture, and then I was arrested. I never offered police money.”

A suspected kidnapper was burnt alive by some indigenes of Ogbunike community in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Wednesday, May 3, while a female victim held by the gang of kidnappers was rescued, IGBERETV reports.

A statement released by the spokesperson of the Anambra state police command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, says the assailants had operated in Ogidi, a neighbouring community in Idemili North Local Government Area, and were on their way to their hideout with a lady they had allegedly kidnapped when the indigenes blocked the road they were plying through, and arrested them. Ikenga said the police operatives in the area were alerted when the incident happened but before getting there, one of the two arrested suspects had already been set ablaze.

“In the early hours of today 3/5/2023, police operatives attached to Ogbunike division responding to a distress call along St Monica College road, Ogbunike, arrested one Mr Jamui Emiron ‘m’ aged 22years and recovered one already damaged yellow Mitsubishi L300 bus with Anambra reg nos: UKP 729 A.

The suspect was among a gang of armed robbers that attacked and robbed occupants of a residential house in Ezi-Ogidi, abducted a female victim and was en route to their den before police were alerted. The members of the neighbourhood had already supported the police by blocking the exit points within the area, intercepting the vehicle and apprehended two of the gang members, while others escape.

Unfortunately, upon the arrival of the police operatives, one of the suspects has already been set ablaze by the mob, and the criminals’ operational vehicle damaged. The operatives rescued the victim, and arrested the second suspect and also impounded the vehicle.”

The police spokesperson said the rescued kidnap victim was already receiving treatment in the hospital, while the arrested suspect is helping police with its investigation.

Ikenga also quoted the state police commissioner, CP Echeng Echeng as urging people to desist from taking laws into their hands by resorting to jungle justice. He said all suspects should be handed over to police for appropriate investigation.

A 20-year-old man, Halifa Hamza, has stabbed his elder brother, Usman Hamza, to death with a pair of scissors in Kurna community in Dala Local Government Area of Kano State, IGBERETV reports.

According to report, the incident happened on Sunday, April 2, 2023, after an argument erupted between the brothers.

Their father, Alhaji Hamza, while speaking in an interview with Freedom Radio, said it was not true that they fought because of a cat, but that it was as a result of the younger brother wearing the shirt and trousers of his elder brother.

“The elder brother that was killed (Usman) collected my motorcycle to go and inform his friends that we had organised Iftar for people so that they could come and eat,” Alhaji Hamza explained.

"When he came back, he saw his younger brother with his shirt and trousers. He then asked why he did that, and from there a fight started. The younger one entered the house and brought a pair of scissors and stabbed the older brother on his chest and he died there.”

A friend of Halifa, who pleaded anonymity, said immediately the incident happened, he left the house and ran away.

The state police command, has begun investigation into the incident.

Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, has accused Professor Nnenna Oti, the Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the just-concluded March 18 governorship election in the state of being unfair to all parties that participated in the poll, IGBERETV reports.

Speaking in an interview with Channels TV on Monday March 30, Ikpeazu said Nnenna Oti was visibly happy that she favoured the Labour Party (LP) during the election.

Governor Ikpeazu said that before the poll, he carried out some background checks on the returning officer and complained to INEC that she won’t be fair in the electoral process but got assurances from the electoral umpire.

On March 22, Nnenna Oti, who is the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, declared LP’s Alex Otti the winner of the March 18 governorship election in Abia. The declaration followed the resumption of the final collation of governorship election results in Umuahia, the state capital over 48 hours after INEC suspended the exercise in the South-East state.

On March 28, Nnenna Oti while being received by her staff and students, said she was offered huge monetary reward and was threatened to manipulate the result of the poll but she remained resolute.

Responding to Nnenna Oti's comment, Governor Ikpeazu said she lacked the power to manipulate results.

“This is very unfortunate. I have not met that professor and I am shocked because in the first place, if she is a professor, she doesn’t even have the capacity to manipulate results because these are results that emanated from the units, collected at the wards, collected at the local governments and brought for her to just add them up and announce. I’ve not met her before; I’ve not spoken to her. If I have met her, if I have spoken to her, let her come to the public and declare so. So, I am shocked that she is making a big noise out of nothing.”

Speaking further, Ikpeazu said he knew the returning officer would be “unfair” due to the coincidence in her name and that of the LP candidate.

“At some point when I saw the coincidence in name and trace a little bit of her background, I complained to INEC that this lady was not going to be fair but they assured me that they profiled her. I am still shocked. What she has potrayed in the aftermath of her service or stewardship in Abia, indicates that fact that she is visibly happy with what she did. Her level of bias in that regard could be placed in favour of a party. She has potrayed that she has something at the back of mind before she came.”, he said.

A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has sentenced one Praise Gelson and Usman Garba to seven years imprisonment for breaking into the home of the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, to steal valuables worth millions of naira, IGBERETV reports.

Another defendant, Tamunoala Alatoru was convicted and sentenced to six months imprisonment for negligence to her duties.

In November 2022, the defendants were arraigned before the court on three counts of conspiracy, armed robbery and attempted murder of the former President’s wife.

The trial judge, Justice Ebebeli, in his judgment, found Gelson and Garba, who were the first and third defendants, guilty of armed robbery and attempted murder, noting that the prosecution counsel proved his case beyond a reasonable doubt. Ebebeli also stated that the prosecution proved his case against Alatoru who was the second defendant, especially on negligence in her duties and therefore should be sentenced to six months imprisonment.
