We are very passionate about the use of maps in making decisions and we feel confident that we can assist EVEN you to leverage on the power of maps.

But why maps?

Have you honestly noticed that a map is the equivalence of a thousand words? I mean it will take several pages of microsoft Word to describe what a single map will show. A map shows so much information in a concise format without trading off details. It allows the making of fast and informed business and technical decisions. Do youknow that about 70% of all decisions to be made in ANY business has spatial content?

'Google Earth' vividly illustrates the popularity of using the power of visual representation as noticed in a map. Yahoo and Microsoft are gentle giants that are pushing maps in the main stream IT. Oracle is also encouraging companies to look in the direction of maps or spatial technologies as noticed in Oracle 8i-10g.
Technology Market / Re: The Ikeja Computer Village by Tobi(m): 8:29am On Nov 10, 2005
Well, i think the price gag placed on product advertising will set a lot of people back, but hey thats Nigeria for you. How many companies are bold enough in Nigeria to advertise the prices of their products in newspapers? Most often than not, u will have to call the people to get an idea of the product price or worse still, u have go there in person!! I think its a Nigeria thing, we are afraid of a price war, but what we dont know is that the price war is good for the industry and the consumer. See what is happening to the price of a GSM SIM card. I cant belive that i joined the qeue to pay =N=20,000 for my MTN SIM in 2001, but how much is it going for now? Almost free!!!!!

As per the dearth of parking space at the village, i usually park for free at the post office opposite Ayinke house and just stroll to the village, so you guys might want to try that next time

Quoting Anton: Posted on: October 19, 2005, 01:04 AM
My question is 'Are you really producing it?'  Are you speaking of the image or the vehicle?  Really, just getting an image is nothing.  Constructing the vehicle is the real engineering wonder.  Let's not even speak of putting it in orbit.  But, it is something we must have the ability to fathom and began to work on soon.  Don't get me wrong.  You seem to be fairly astute, but i must say;  The First thing Nigerians should be saying is "We can do this by ourselves", so why are we paying these people?

I quite agree with Anton that Nigeria should develop the capacity and capabilty required to build such a satellite but i think the world is moving away from that 'do-everything-yourself' era.  Egypt and some 3rd world countries all have satellites in space and they did not build them themselves. While we are busy trying to learn the nitty-gritty of the satellite, the rest of the world will leave us behind.

I think the first thing we should do is to create awareness for the use of Remote Sensing technologies. When this had been achieved to a level, then we can start talking about building our own satellites from the scratch. The Americans do not produce ALL the components of the computer, they bring components from Asia and Europe. Take the GPS (Global Positioning System)  for instance, Europe had depended on the constallation of the 21 GPS satellites built and maintained by the American Department of Defence right from its inception in the 60s. It was just last year that Europe decided to have their own equivalent of the American  GPS called "Galilieo" just because the americans shut down the GPS during the Gulf war of the 90s

Going further, america still depend on the Russians sometimes to help launch some of their satellites because the Russians had perfected the art and science of lauching "heavy payloads " into space and this had been the situation for more than 20years now..why didn't the americans learn to launch ALL of their payloads everytime? Well because launching the satellite has nothing to do with reaping the benefits for building the satellites in the first place.

So Anton, i will suggest that we take it one step at a time...lets use the products of the satellites first, then we can graduate to building our satellites.

MTN deployed over 3,500km lenght of SDH microwave backbone  with all the relevant redundant rings but it was discovered that the weather causes serious down time especially during  serious rainstorms. Now MTN has awarded a contract to Huawei to convert the backbone to fibre, so in the next couple of years, MTN will lauch a fibre backbone. Glo is even a step ahead of MTN, glo has laid about 1,000km of fibre across the country and Alcatel and Siemen are optimistic that about 3,000km of fibre would have been laid by the end of 2005 for glo. Vmobile is seriously trying to wake up to this new new iniative.  NITEL had laid some before things went sour.

Ques: Why are these GSM companies dumping  microwave for fibre?

Phones / Re: Vmobile Nigeria Project ROSE ("Rolling Out Service Everywhere") by Tobi(m): 1:37pm On Aug 30, 2005
Seye:

Project Rose is a FRAUD. How can Vmobile expect us to text a number at N15. Imagine 2 million subscriber at N15 each. That's N30 million. Imagine how many stupid Nigerian that will fall for this trick on a daily basis. Haba. Its like Using Abu's money to entertain Abu. (Ka fowo Abu sabu lalejo).

Seye, u voiced my exact sentiment.  Vomible is presenting the impression that they r subscribers driven but it makes no sense...Does that mean that they do not have a roll-out plan like MTN? I know for sure that the operators have to provide their own transmission network or are they saying that there is transmission available everywhere? If for instance i txt in my village somewhere in Abeokuta and the nearest tramsission node is about 50km away, will they say that they must provide coverage by all means just because i was able to influence my my kinsmen to vote?
They can only use this method for priotising coverage if they had provided perhaps partial coverage in those places and they get people to show if they want them to go to those places that they would not ordinarily want to go. I think that Vmobile is insiduosly trying to compell people to spend =N=15 for nothing. U do the aritmethic and see how much acrues to their purse from this little SCAM.
Nairaland / General / Re: Stop Gas Flaring in Nigeria by Tobi(m): 1:01pm On Aug 30, 2005
Lets hope that with the privatization of the power and engergy industry, gas flaring will be reduced. I know for sure that natural gas could form the basis for generating electricity as the case in Egbin Thermal station in Lagos. yes agreed that the law says that igas flaring should stop by 2008, but we dont need the law to impell the oil companies to stop flaring, they could sell to the private power holding companies. That way, they make money from such gas.

Just encourage BPE to privatise Nepa and see what will happen
Politics / Re: 1,000 Naira Note: Will there be inflation? by Tobi(m): 12:58pm On Aug 30, 2005
Agreed that =N=1000 note will not cause inflation, then why stop there? Govt could as well introduce even higher denominations like =N=10,000 notes!!!! That way, it makes it even easier to move large sums of money around!!!

Question: why is it that the largest denomination in UK today is the £50 note after so many years? Is there any basis for comparing the inflation in 9jar with that of UK? Why is the pence so popular in the UK but spending coins in 9jar is almost unheard of now? Perhaps this small denomination in UK made the average briton appreciate the pence so much that goods and services are priced not only in pounds but also in pence. But what do we have at home? Coins have now become virtually extinct!! A large trailer filled with Nigerian coins was arrested sometime ago on its way to cotonou to melt the coins and use them for whatever, i wonder why the trailer shlould be arrested since coins is fast disappearing as a legal tender.

Am not an economist ooo, but one thing i ve come to notice is that the introduction of a higher denomination in Nigeria goes with the concomitant higher price of goods and services. It also leads to the extinct of smaller demonimation. Check out our antecedents.

Programming / Re: Companies not giving IT Projects to Nigerians by Tobi(m): 1:17pm On Aug 23, 2005
Am more interested in Spatial Technology or GIS (Geographic Information System).. this is the application of IT in the Mapping industry. MTN spent almost $1million on the acquistion of mapping data to be used in their RF planning and Transmission Planning, well that is no news anymore, but the fact is..the mapping was produced by a foreign company (South Africa). Vmobile is towing the same line. Glo is practically giving all its mapping contracts (worth over =N=50million) to Alcatel..when will these companies ever have faith in Nigerian Specialists?? when??
TV/Movies / Re: Nigeria has a Satellite in Orbit! (NigeriaSat-1) by Tobi(m): 11:34am On Aug 23, 2005
The lauch of this satelite should have not have preceeded a policy or a frame-work that stipulates governmnet's intention for the usage of this satellites for mapping etc. The usage of this satellite will create awareness for the use of maps, GIS (Geographic Information System), Photogrammerty, Remote Sensing etc.

What we dont know is that the launch of this satelite has the potency to single handedly impact positively on ALL bussiness decisions. For instance, it had been noted that about 80% of all business decisions made are geographic in nature. The use of maps will help answer the WHERE question. Where are the customers that want our products, where are the competitors? where and where? America is the largest user of maps, other countries like Japan Canada and indeed so many countries in Europe are catching on. Without accurate maps, we cant conduct a credible census, election. NEPA cant effectively know how many people theyare serving, do we then expect them to plan very well? GSM and oil companies are spending a fortune getting foreigners to map Nigeria for them due to the dearth of such good maps in the country. With time, perhaps Nigeria will mature to such a level where we can have maps of bus routes, train routes etc to dessiminate information like its done in London coaches and trains.

Guys belive it or not, the launch of remote sensing satelite could create so many jobs, opportunites, technologies like Automatic Vehicle Tracking (AVL), Navigational systems, better planning in agriculture, etc
Business / Re: Security in Nigeria by Tobi(m): 5:09pm On Aug 18, 2005
i seriously think that Seun's suggestion at making an attempt to dialogue is better. Some of these contractors take things too personal and far. I had the same experience.

i was in a postition to influence the award of a contract in my company worth over =N=80million some months ago, one of the contending contractor thought i will naturally award it to him because he used to know me. Well my boss awarded it to some1 else whom he was sure will not trade off quality. The guy took it personal and threatened me for that. I reported it to my boss and the guy was called and my boss explained what happened to him. He was given a another contract though a smaller one. So let tell ur dad to explore dialogue option with the guy and made it known that he is different from Mobil.

Well, i think wind powered energy will b nice in Nigeria but we should also not forget abt the availability of enough wind to turn the roto. I think its only at the coastal states that we can get enough wind to achieve this.
The alternative is gas. Nigeria i heard is the 4th largest producer of gas and its regrettable to know that we flare almost 80% of our gas. have u seen Portharcourt from a plane night? U'll count almost 7 flare points making the whole place light up like going to watch a match in the stadium at night.

Half of that gas could be used to power the turbines. Egbin Thermal station in Lagos, is on gas, but politics will not make them send gas uninterrupted to the station. I was discussing this with some1 and the guy was wondering how gas can be piped from the west, east or north where the power stations will be. But hey...Nigeria is laying Pipe from South to service West Africa then go to North of Africa b4 it ends in Europe through the desert. I heard that will be the most ambitious pipe network in the world. If we can do that then laying pipes from south to anywhere is no big deal.

But Red, is it right to put the entire economy into the hands of Foreigners? Did u see what the Japaness are doing in US? I heard that they are controlling the strategic businesses in America and the Americans are getting wary because The Japaness' market is not open to the them they way thy opened to the Japaness.

We are gradually getting to that point. I was in South Africa last year and i met a lot of Nigerians there and i was told that the strigent measures required to set up a business in SA is difficult to meet, that is why a lot of Nigerians who go there end up doing menial jobs or take to crime. I heard that Nigerians pricipally control all the drug, and prostitution racket in SA.
Dont u think that we could run into the same precarious condition that the Americans are now facing over Japan?

The guy is a shrewd businessman. He knows that u cant mix business with politics and that is why he must court every regime, that was the bane of MKO's wahala, he mixed buisness with politics.

Again, is Dangote the ONLY one that has contacts or public relation? there are others that have as much contact sas the guy but what did they do with their own contacts? We all shouted foul when we discovered that the $40Bilion oil windfall iin 1991 was missing, obviously that mmoney couldn't have vanished like that..someone or some people must have taken the money...Whoever took the money must be powerful enough to do that and i can tell u that u cant be powerful without contacts..  Why did those people NEVER use their own contact to invest massively like Dangote?

i shld also add to the list of requirements that Seun wrote b4...
STB will also require that u open a current account to operate this Master card and they'll therefore demand for ur utility bills and a reference from a current account holder in any other bank. If u r a tenant like me grin, they will still ask to see ur NEPA bill even if its not in your name to show that u live in the address u gave them.
Phones / Re: GSM Business in Nigeria - How viable for new entrants? by Tobi(m): 11:43am On Aug 17, 2005
A large chunk of Nigeria's 120 million population lives in rural places. The incumbent operators had made an eloquent statement that they intended covering ONLY the cities. NCC had to force them to spread their coverage by stipulating that they must cover at least 5% of each geo-political regions in their licences.  Even at that, the vast majority of Nigerians living in rural areas are still waiting to be served.

I foresee a robust market for rural telephone next year, infact, i have a feeling that NCC will issue about 3 Licences for rural coverage by next year. The world bank is eager to provide telephone service to rural areas thinking that this will be the only panacea for poverty. World bank is even going a step further to provide loan facilities for people who want to start some kind of phone related business in rural areas at zero interest rate.

I think that there is still enough room for new entrants in the GSM biz especially in rural coverage.
Phones / Re: Virgin Group, Vodacom team up for Vmobile Nigeria? by Tobi(m): 11:05am On Aug 17, 2005
I really do not think this symbiotic relationship will go well. ECONET is bent on stopping V-mobile  at all cost from getting any direct investment without its veto based on the agreement it had with V-mobile, moreover, Virgin and Vodacom will have to risk being seued for contempt of court if they go ahead and invest in V-mobile.  ECONET has even gone a step further to warn any "would-be" investor that V-mobile is a no-go area at least until the court delivers a substansive verdict on its relationship and agreement with Vmobile. I heard that ECONET instituted a court injunction against vodacom in South Africa and another one against Virgin in UK.

The fact is V-mobile is cash strapped!!! they need money to catch up with MTN but where will the money come from? I heard that First Bank wants to sell its equity in V-mobile because things are actually not looking good for Vmobile. But why not go public? well that will probably be the last option and one that ECONET will have no answer to.

Vmobile will always have a need for a technical partner as ECONET had really messed up things there... i heard that expatraits were just coming in from Zimbabwe during the era of ECONET without developing local capabilities, when ECONET finally left, it became aparent that there were no local guys that can take off from where ECONET stopped and the trend had not changed much since then. Vmobile is not investing in mental development of their local guys like MTN did, they would rather give out contracts to their foreign experts than train local guyz to handle stuffs here. The result is, all those experts refuse to train local guys and they go back to their countries after the expiration of their contracts. Infact some of them were coming to Nigeria lo learn and get paid for it, then return to their countries with whatever knowledge they had been able to glean from Nigeria.
Phones / Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by Tobi(m): 10:08am On Aug 17, 2005
Vongauche:

Anyway, what I really want to know is if Globacom is really Nigerian as they claim to be. I mean 100% Nigerian. How exactly did Adenuga make his money? People say from oil, but is he merely fronting for some one or some faceless people? It seems like Globacom has some Indians in quite a few key management decisions? why?

Well its a lot cheaper to bring in the indians than to bring some morons from UK or US..yeah agreed the indians are a bit more expensive than the Nigerians but hey...it pays to have people see some "white or colored" skin in your companies..it makes people think that ur company is actually bigger than it really is.

Agreed Adenuga had made loads and loads of money but men, the kind of money Globacom is spending today is even more than Adenuga will ever dream of having and nothing had ben said if he took a loan or not. MTN took some loan from some Finance arm of the World Bank and thats is why the world bank has abt 3% equity in MTN, this is in addition to the loan given MTN by a consortium of banks in Nigeria...again, Motorola and Ericsson provided some kind of equipment syndicated loan to V-mobile in addition to First Bank's loan. How abt Globacom? Guardian Newspaper even said that Globacom had laid over 2,500km lenght of optical fiber across the country (http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/compulife/article04) even MTN can't boast of that achievement.  The Question is; Who is fiancing Globacom?? Nobody knows, eveything abt the company is known except the fiancier which makes it easier to suspect that perhaps Adenuga is fronting for some money-miss road guys in the background. Why shld the source of Globacom's money be shrouded in secrecy or mystery anyway? why? What is EFFC doing? The source of Globacom's finace should be investigated to make sure that it is not from money laundered.
Phones / Re: NITEL Up For Sale Soon by Tobi(m): 3:42pm On Aug 16, 2005
bell:

The aggressive nature of the chinese in getting into Nigerian telco industry kind of worries me. The issue in privatising NITEL should be cash and pedigree. While these guys might have the cash, they do not have the pedigree. They are simply not operators, why has Ericsson, Siemens and Nokia not tried to buy in too, are they also not vendors and Ericsson and Siemens know NITEL well enough.

Hey bell,

I really think u shld try and understand these Chiness guys..take Virgin Mobile of UK for instance..every1 knows that virgin does not have a physical network..what they do is to buy airtime from vodafone, T-mobile, orange etc and resell to their own customers..but u know what they r trying to do with V-mobile? They r moving away from what they r knowned for to investing in a phyiscal network.

Going further...Motorola is an equipement supplier but they r running a network now somewhere in Malaysia. Huawei and ZTE r breaking away from the tradition of just supplying equipment, now they feel they have the capacity to run a physical network..is anything bad in  that??

While on this issue, Siemens was the technical partner of NITEL and they were practically in charge of NITEL during IBB and Abacha's regims. ALCATEL is practically running Glo network..i mean they do everything from RF Planning to Network Monitoring, Fiber Laying etc..

So Bell..the equipment suppliers are moving into main stream network operation.

Huawei is giving Ercisson a run for their money by taking vital equipment supply contracts from Ericsson at MTN, V-Mobile, Starcomms, Reltel and Multilinks, Bell these chiness guys r building confidence, thats pedigree to me.

i will like to see NITEL in the hands of the chiness, then u will know what service affordability and resilence means.
Religion / Re: To Tithe or Not to Tithe? by Tobi(m): 2:26pm On Aug 15, 2005
Hey, i think that its always expedient to understand the spirit behind the law on tithe given the nation of isreal as found in the bible.

Question: Why did God expect the isrealites to pay their tenth part?
Answer: When the Isreal got to the promised land, every tribe was given portions of land as inheritance except the tribe of Levi who were to serve as priests. They were not allowed to do anything but to be in the temple and render God exclusive service 24/7. God then commanded the rest of the nation to bring in something (tithe) to support the Levi in their service.

Ques: Are christians mandated to pay a tenth part of their earnings?
Answer: Christains are encouraged to make regular contributions to support the work of God. But How much? The widow in Jesus' day was oberved dropping in 2 coins. The Bible says that was ALL she had. That widow certainly dropped more than a tenth of what she had..she dropped EVERYTHING she had. The point is..in xtian era, God does not stipulate a specific amount of what should be contributed going by what we saw in the Christain Greek Scriptures. Just contribute towards God's service as much as u can afford for God luvs a cheerful giver.

Que: Who shld be the custodian of the money contributed?
Ans: The Congregation and not the pastor. The money does not belong to the pastor and he shld not see it as such. he shld not live in shamless luxury at the expense of the congregation and he cant spend a kobo without the conscent of the congregation.

The fact that some pastors do not work secularly is not a cogent reason for them to live off the congregation. Paul was a full apostle but he took up a vocation as a tent maker. He did not live off anybody..infact he even asked if there is anyone that can accuse him of living fat off any1 and no1 said he was taken adavantaged of by paul..the point is..even the "Full-Time" pastors do not have any reason to live in luxury at the expense of the congregation.

I pay my contributions....sometimes its more than a tenth of ma earnings sometimes it is not up to that figure but i make monetary contributions REGULARLY

Red:

Are people actually this dense? You guys laud the launching of a satelite while people cannot eat?Babies crawl before the walk and I think someone forgot to tell Nigeria that.Waste of money.

Its obvious that Red is myopic and short sighted. This satellite is a remote sensing sat. Remote Sensing means taking info abt an object from a distance, in this case the sky. This satellite can be used amongst others to monitor agriculture and raise alarm to problems that could jeopardise healthy yield. The Russians beneffited from such satellites when imageries told them sometime in late 80s that they will suffer from low yield of wheat because it was discovered that winter that year had caused frost to form a blanket over the wheat crop. This early warning caused the Russian govt to step up effort to avert that danger. If not for Remote Sensing and the satellite in space, Russian would have suffered more hunger than they did even during the Bolshevic revolution.

So Red, The use of satellites could help monitor and boost agriculture and create more food for those hungry babies that u are so concerned about. I invite u to study how India is benefiting from the use of remote sensing imgaries to bring food to their almost 1billion population.
Business / The New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) by Tobi(m): 10:10am On Jun 17, 2005
What do you think this NEPAD thing ( www.nepad.org ) is all about anyway? I have my doubts about its sincerity. I think that South Africa came up with this program to create a virgin market for their economy in Africa since their own market is getting saturated and EU is not allowing them to flood their market like they were doing in the past.

They enlisted the assistance of President Obasanjo to drum support for NEPAD because they know that we are always "Hot" on such programs.

Now South Africa is already taking over anything and everything in Nigeria's economy. They are opening shopping malls all over, they are bringing over $200 million to invest in power once NEPA is privatised, I even heard that they offered to pay the handsome sum of $1 billion for our railway when their own railway system is in shambles!! Their fast food companies are ready to dust Mr Biggs, Tantalizer etc. They had brought St Elmoz already and I heard that they are bringing MacDonald's! More are coming guys! shocked

Well I dont want MTN getting NITEL's license either because of competition but if the economy is dominated by South Africa, so what? Why do you guys think the South African is championing the NEPAD issue? They want to take over Africa with the help of Nigeria..

Personally I don't care who runs what, as long as everything is working right, and there is fairness and equity. I would have prefered ZTE or even Huawei both are Chiness companies. My reason is that they will build a resilence network that will be affordable by all. I also know that once Vodafone or Telkom wins, that will mean an automatic unbundling of MTEL to VODACOM as they both have a stake in VODACOM, that way, VODACXOM will still come into Nigeria through the back door if their deal with V-mobile fails.
TV/Movies / Re: Nigeria has a Satellite in Orbit! (NigeriaSat-1) by Tobi(m): 8:08am On Jun 17, 2005
I have almost concluded that we have not started reaping the dividends of this satellite. I know for a certainty that this is a Remote Sensing satellite. What that means is that Nigeria now has the means and technological capacity to undertake serious resource mapping of our country. I would have expected that by now, we should start seeing qualitative maps of different aspects of our country around instead of recycling the old topographical maps that were done just before the independence. Once we develop the capability to start producing and updating the exisiting maps then companies like Mobil, Cheveron and Shell will have no reason to give out mapping contracts to foreigners under the farcad of no local technology to achieve this. GSM companies are towing the line of these oil companies, MTN for instance sourced all the maps required to do planning from South Africa running into millions of RANDs, Glo has been paying Alcatel millions of Dollars to supply them maps of Nigeria made in Italy!!!!! V-Mobile also source all its mapping requirements from outside!!

I had the priviledge of seeing one of the first imageries processed at Abuja showing a part of Lagos and i was really glad to note that we can now produce such wonders at home. Agreed that the imageries had some cloud cover but the resolution at about 32meters was fantastic!! For instance i noticed that there had been a lot of dredging  near Badagry which portends grave danger to the ppl living there because the lagoon water could now find its way into fresh water near Badagry. This could cause flooding and topple the balanced ecosystem of that area. Am not sure if Lagos State govt has access to this type of info otherwise ppl living around the delta of Lagos near badagry are in for a lot of suprise if the lagoon pushes its way into the land, the bar beach disaster will pale into insignificance compared to what will befall our ppl at Badagry.

IAN, I understand that MTN had set up a foundation to identify areas where they can give back to the communities. For instance they had indentified 5 states or there about with not less than 5 schools in each state where they can set up a complete Computer lab with several computers all networked and connected to the internet thru satellite!! They have even gone further to pay consultants in each state to manage the project after the the official handover..About 5 teachers from each school are being trained by a consultant from America on Oracle database, basic computer porgramming, internet usage etc. These teachers are suppose to pass on what they gleaned from their training to the students. what do u call all these if its not responsiblity

I think our problem is that we just cant forgive MTN for making so much money and we dont care how much money they helped us to make on the side. We are offended that a foreign company can take the risk to invest in our moribound economy and succeed. Companies like Vodacom who called Nigeria a "High Risk" investment are now waking up and falling all over themselves to come to invest here, thanx to the success story of MTN.

Why are we losing sight of the fact that MTN has brought about a lot of business opportunities that were not there before the advent of GSM. Ask the call centers how much money they are making and what they do with all that money they made. Again, MTN had become either directly or indirectly one of the largest employers of labour. Ask all those people who hawk recharge cards on the streets.

Yes, MTN is smiling to the bank, but would we prefer to go back to the era of NITEL monopoly and forestall such colosal profit? shocked I will prefer to allow MTN make money and connect me to my old parents in my village than go back to the era of NITEL and wired lines that cost so much to buy and work for a few days because it had been tossed!
