They then asked for at least safe corridor, it wasn't provided. Russia insisted on surrender. Putin called on Ukrainians to overthrow Zelenski. They called on various towns to surrender, including some soldiers on an island. Nobody surrendered. They resorted to attacking civilian targets, still nothing like surrender, instead civillians were taking up arms. Russian generals were being killed, soldiers and equipment captured, harassment from every angle while the sanctions bit and companies trooping out of Russia, and resignations of top officials. They were eventually fought to a standstill, which is what led to their capitulation today.

As one erudite writer said, anybody who thinks Putin's beef is NATO hasn't been paying attention. It is an expantionist agenda he has voiced before, hoping to resurrect the old USSR. We can thank Ukraine for putting a death nail to any such notion for good!
