This isnt accurate. The Niger Delta has always cried about marginalization... some part of Niger Delta were part of western region and they fought for regional autonomy resulting in a fourth region BenDel being created.
Other parts of Niger Delta in the Eastern region like the Ijaws too had been crying about marginalization (Isaac Adaka Boro's secession attempt comes to mind).
