The German national was working at a construction site in northern Nigeria. Kidnapping for ransom is common in Nigeria.

Five armed men kidnapped a German national and killed a policeman in northern Nigeria, police said on Monday.

Gunmen on motorcycles opened fire on a vehicle carrying workers to a construction site run by construction company Dantata & Sawoe in Kano city, abducting the German national working for the firm and killing a police escort, said police spokesman Magaji Musa Majia.

"The attackers killed one police sergeant attached to the special protection unit on escort duty and abducted ... a German national working with the company," the spokesman said. "A manhunt for the abductors is ongoing."

Kidnapping for ransom is common in Nigeria. Armed criminal groups in the oil-producing south have regularly kidnapped oil-workers, wealthy people and family members of government ministers to extract payments.

Kidnapping has increasingly spread to the north, where cattle rustlers have turned to the practice after a government crackdown on livestock theft.

Northeastern Nigeria is also the scene of a long-running war between the military and Boko Haram militants, who have abducted more than 1,000 children since 2013, according to UNICEF.

Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst has revealed he has been receiving regular treatment for HIV for several years. The Austrian singer said he was forced to share his diagnosis after being blackmailed by an ex-boyfriend.
Austrian Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst revealed in an Instagram post on Sunday that he had been receiving treatment for HIV for several years.

The 29-year-old singer said he had not intended to make the diagnosis public, but had been forced to do so because of threats from a former boyfriend.


"I have been HIV positive for many years," Wurst wrote on Instagram. "This is actually irrelevant to the public, but an ex-boyfriend has threatened to take this private information public and I will never give anyone the right to frighten me and influence my life because of it."
Wurst added that the virus was below the detectability threshold and could therefore no longer be passed on.

"I hope to give others courage and to take another step against the stigmatization of people who, through their own behavior or that of others, have become infected with HIV," Wurst said.
Wurst vows to continue performing as usual

Wurst, who is the alter ego of drag artist Tom Neuwirth, rose to fame after winning the 2014 Eurovision song contest with the song "Rise Like a Phoenix."

Wurst sought to reassure the public about his health, writing "I'm well and I'm stronger, more motivated and more liberated than ever. Thank you for your support!"


The singer is scheduled to host the "Amadeus Austrian Music Awards" and is also working with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra on a new album entitled "From Vienna with Love," due out in October.

Police in Münster said several people had been killed and others injured when a van smashed into a group of people in the city center. Authorities are investigating the scene and the circumstances surrounding the crash.Several people have died after a van drove into a crowd in central Münster in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia on Saturday, according to local police.

"Some people have died and some have been injured," police wrote on Twitter. They added that officers and first responders were on the scene and asked the public to stay away from the old part of the city.
"Please do not spread rumors on Twitter and Facebook" police said. "We are on the scene. Please leave the city center and go home."
Police later called for witnesses to the incident to come forward and asked people to avoid speculation and rumor, and not to publish images online.

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer wrote on Twitter that he had learned with "great sadness" about the crash and added that federal authorities were working closely with the regional authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Hours after the incident, the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung, public broadcaster ZDF and news agency DPA said the assailant was a German in his late 40s and believed to be psychologically disturbed “with no known links to “terrorism.”


Police said a suspicious object was found in the van. They said they were still examining what kind of an object it is and whether it was dangerous. Officials told German news agency dpa that the object led to a large area around the scene being sealed off after the crash.

German police said they were checking witness reports that other perpetrators may have fled from the van. Police spokesman Andreas Bode said witnesses told them others left the van after it crashed. News agency dpa reported that witnesses spoke of two others in the van besides the driver.

Bode said it was “too soon” to call the incident a deliberate attack.

Munster Mayor Markus Lewe said the reason for the crash was still unclear. Lewe told reporters that “all of Muenster is mourning this horrible incident. Our sympathy is with the relatives of those who were killed. We wish the injured a quick recovery.”

Immediately after the crash the online edition of the Spiegel magazine reported that German authorities were “assuming” the incident was an attack, though there was no immediate official confirmation.

“There are deaths and injured. Please avoid the area, we are on scene,” the regional police service said on Twitter.
