Politics › 23 Killed As Vehicles Crash Into Collapsed Bridge In Katsina by Tolexander(op): 5:57pm On Sep 10, 2013 |
No fewer than 23 persons were feared killed in multiple crashes, when their vehicles plunged into a collapsed bridge at Yar’randa village in Charanchi Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The first crash involved a bus conveying 24 passengers which plunged into the bridge few minutes after its collapse on Monday night.
According to the witness, the bridge collapsed at about 9.30p.m. due to heavy downpour and moments after the bus with registration number XA 328 KZR, conveying passengers from Kano to Katsina, fell into the bridge.
The villagers said efforts made to alert the bus driver was to no avail as he was on high speed. Collapsed Yar'randa bridge where 23 passengers died in Charnachi, Katsina State, Monday. PHOTO: NAN

The bus and the passengers were swept by the heavy current and some of the dead bodies were recovered miles away in Ajiwa area, the villagers and officials told NAN.
NAN also gathered that only two of the passengers in the bus, including a student of Federal College of Education, Bichi in Kano state, survived the incident.
The student, Jamilu Aminu-Elder, who was seen at the scene, could not speak to NAN as he was still in shock.
The police said 10 bodies had been recovered and deposited at the mortuary of General Hospital, Kankia while the search for 12 others was ongoing.
Similarly, another person was reported dead when the vehicle he was in, a Mitsubishi truck, fell into the water at about 5.00a.m. on Tuesday.
Two other persons in the vehicle however survived, while a motorcycle rider with a passenger, who also plunged into the collapsed bridge were rescued alive.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Bala Senchi, who visited the scene, confirmed the story, but said the police were not clear on the number of death as the search for the missing passengers was still on.
He said policemen had been deployed to the area to control traffic and prevent further accident at the scene.
Malam Rabi’u Ibrahim, the Permanent Secretary, sttae Ministry for Works and Housing and an official of Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) had visited the scene to assess the damage.
Ibrahim said a report would be forwarded to the Katsina State Government for prompt intervention.
He condoled with the families of the deceased persons and prayed for the repose of the souls of those who died. (NAN) orisun |

Why won't they deport him?
Considering: the amount of food and water he will be consuming daily which is enough to feed 100 children.
The amount of yards of cloth he will use to make his body wears which is enough to cloth 10people.
The fraction of space he will occupy which can be enough to house 5 men and 10rabbits.
And lastly, the size of the coffin he will need to drive his corpse to the humus which will very much be as big as a nigerian kiosk.
Those are enough to wreck a nation. |

Why would a Traditional ruler just wake up and abolish a tradition that has been in existence way before his great-great-great-great-grandfathers were born?! If he feels the need to make a real change, why not abolish the mornarchy entirely?! Its not like he serves any real or tangible purpose to Mankind..
[/quote]exactly the same question am trying to ask. Why will a man wake up to impose his own mentality and religion on another people. It isn't mandatory he becomes the olu of warri. If he isn't in support of the religion the people practise, let him relinquish the post. |
Politics › Re: ASUU STRIKE:FG Seeks Spiritual Solution To End Face-off by Tolexander: 4:29am On Sep 10, 2013 |
skimarvel: Senate President David Mark and the governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam have called on religious leaders to intervene in the lingering face-off between the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which has resulted in the closure of universities nationwide. Addressing the 2nd plenary session of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in Otukpo, Benue State yesterday, Senator Mark said the differences between the federal government and ASUU required spiritual intervention in order to end the unending imbroglio. David Mark lamented the plight of the students who have been kept at home and deprived of a stable school calender because of the on-going ASUU strike. Also speaking, the Benue State governor, Suswam called for partnership between the church, government and the people in order to fast-track political development and stability in the country, urging the bishops to use the session to appeal to ASUU to shift ground as the federal government had made reasonable concessions to their demands to give peace a chance and return students to school. In his welcome address, the President, Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama urged Christians to be loyal to biblical teachings in all their dealings and called for interior purifications among Nigerians adding that with renewed commitment to the task of teaching and sanctifying, Nigeria will overcome her travails source? |

Abuja — An Abuja Magistrate Court, yesterday, sentenced a 22- year-old cashier, Mariam Salifu, to 14 years in prison for stealing N3.15 million belonging to her employers. The convict, residing at Karimo in the FCT, was arraigned on a two- count charge of criminal breach of trust and theft. She had earlier admitted to absconding with the money. The Magistrate, Hajiya Fati Tafida, sentenced Salifu without an option to pay fine. She ordered that the convict be imprisoned at the Federal Prisons, Suleija, for 14 years to serve as deterrent to others. Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Mr Phillip Appolos, had told the court that one Christopher Nwozor of Life Camp, Abuja, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station on August 19. He said that the accused, who is a cashier at C.C. Royal Fishing, was told to deposit N3.15 million into the company’s account in Diamond Bank at Wuse Zone 2. Appolos said that the accused absconded with the money on August 17, to an unknown destination, instead of depositing it. The prosecutor said that Salifu was subsequently, arrested in Lokoja, following police investigation. orisun |

Education › Strike: Information Minister’s Statement Careless, Says ASUU by Tolexander(op): 9:49am On Sep 09, 2013 |
UMUAHIA — THE Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has lashed out at the Information Minister, Labaran Maku, for saying Nigeria would shut down if the Federal Government conceded to the demands of university teachers. ASUU described the minister’s statement as a careless utterance, and urged Nigerians to ignore him. The union in a statement by Zonal Coordinator, Calabar zone, Dr. Charles Ononuju, said Maku was ignorant of the agreement between it and the Federal Government. It asked Maku to apologise to Nigerians for such unguarded comments and warned him to stop playing politics with the future of the Nigerian child. ASUU said: “Nigerians should ignore the careless utterance by the Minister of Information that the country will shut down if ASUU’s demand is met. It seems the minister has not seen or read the 2009 ASUU/FG agreement. “The country has not shut down with constant government wastages and billions of dollars being stolen. The minister should apologise to Nigerians for such unguarded comments and stop playing politics with the future of Nigerian child.” orisun |
