LAGOS— A 60-year-old self- acclaimed Pastor, Simon Dike, and three other persons were, yesterday, arraigned before an Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos, for allegedly selling a month and 18-day-old baby boy for N60,000. The accused persons are Joy Uzochukwa, 27, the mother of the baby; Margaret Obinwa, 49, an auxiliary nurse and Chibuzor Ogbonna, 50, who was said to be the father of the baby. The father of the baby is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy in human trafficking and selling of a new born baby, Obinwa; the auxiliary nurse is facing a one-count charge of purchasing the baby while Dike is also facing a two- count charge of human trafficking and failure to use all reasonable means to prevent the commission of the offence by the mother of the baby and the auxiliary nurse. The accused persons, who were brought to the court by detectives from State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti in Yaba, pleaded not guilty to the charges. According to the prosecutor, ASP Henry Obiazi, “all the accused persons are residents of Odongunyan, Ikorodu and the crime was committed on January 4, a day after the baby was born, at De-Ifes Medical Centre, Odogunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos.” Obiazi informed the court that Uzochukwa went to meet Obinwa to help her abort the pregnancy as an auxiliary nurse but she encouraged her not to abort but sell the baby, adding that Obinwa then introduced Uzochukwa to Dike, who wanted to buy the baby. Dike has been married for 28 years without a child. The prosecutor said that Uzochukwa signed an undertaking not to demand for the baby after collecting the money, which she accepted the offer. “Uzochukwa left Ogbonna who impregnated her because he didn’t take care of her and married another man, called Kingsley, who later hatched the plan to sell the baby boy to the men of Oodua Peoples’ Congress, OPC, that later reported the case to the police,” the prosecutor added. However, the Chief magistrate, Miss S.O Solebo, who presided over the case granted Uzochukwa and Dike bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with a responsible surety in like sum, while Obinwa and Ogbonna were granted bail in the sum of N200, 000 each with two sureties in like sum. Solebo ordered that the baby should be taken to Lagos State Motherless Babies home on Victoria Island, Lagos and that Uzochukwa should be permitted to see the baby under the supervision of the matron of the Home. The case has been adjourned, March 13 for further hearing. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/02/60-yr-old-pastor-3-others-docked-for-allegedly-selling-a-month-old-baby/ |

BARELY 24 hours after the Federal Government said it had approved N384 billion for the payment of entitlements of workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, Organised Labour has rejected government’s position, threatening to shut down the sector next week should government fail to reverse its position. Under the umbrella of National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, labour wondered how the government arrived at N384 billion when the technical committee comprising government appointed actuarist – Alexander Forbes, Bureau for Public Enterprises, BPE, PHCN, and the unions charged with the responsibility of computing the exit package of PHCN staff was yet to conclude its assignment. Reacting to government announcement through its General Secretary, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the workers argued that Alexander Forbes and BPE officials discovered and accepted fundamental errors in the data used for their computation in the course of the committee’s discussion and thus agreed to reconvene on a later date towards addressing the fundamental errors. According to the statement “It is therefore amazing that figures can be conjured to calculate the exit benefits without reference to the technical committee. The announcement is highly provocative. “The figure (N384billion) is laughable because government is also aware that one third of the staff population were excluded and majority of those captured had their entitlement calculated based on two grades lower than their actual grades”. “Besides, regularization of casuals who have been in the industry for a long period is yet to be concluded and the value of their exit benefits should form an integral part of the total package. “If the money (N384 billion) to be paid to the staff is to appreciate them for their concerted efforts towards the noticeable power improvement in the country, we shall gladly accept it and commend government for the largesse. “But if it is for our exit packages, then government should do the right thing. It is imperative to remind government that time without number it has made pronouncement to its commitment to the rule of law which unfortunately has not been demonstrated in this case. This can only be regarded as an act of impunity, since this figure was not a product of consensus by the parties involved in this matter.” It added that. “Calculation of exit package not done on the basis of accurate data is totally unacceptable to us and shall be resisted through all legal means. The Technical and Implementation Committees should therefore be allowed to conclude their assignments without hindrance and resort to the use of armed forces to short change workers in the Sector. Besides, the use of Sacked workers the drivers of this process as lacking in the knowledge of Personnel and Industrial Relations. If it is not reversed, we would behave like Sacked workers effective next week. Power of impunity will definitely not work towards addressing these issues.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/02/labour-rejects-n384bn-settlement-threatens-to-shut-power-sector/ |

Abuja – Three months after a reported case of wild polio in Jahi village, a community in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), another case has been confirmed in Kabusa, Lugbe, FCT, an official said. Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed, the Executive Secretary of the FCT Primary Health Care Development Board, said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja, that the case of two and a half-year old Abubakar Usman was reported to the board two weeks ago during the immunisation plus days. Mohammed told NAN that Usman had a case weakness of the limbs and samples were taken to Ibadan for test, a confirmation of the result was out on Feb. 18. “In December, we had the first case of polio positive and the second case was also positive, so we have three cases in three months. “That means we need to do more so as to curtail the transmission of polio in the FCT, so that it doesn’t move to other states. “Two weeks ago, when we were doing our immunisation, the child was reported to have weakness of the limbs. “The first thing that we do when we have a child that has reported with the weakness of the limbs is to take the stool sample for investigation in Ibadan. “We have taken the sample and it came out on the 18, the child is having wild polio virus type one. “The whole of this year in the whole of this country, this is the first case of the virus; it’s unfortunate that the father refused immunisation for all his children. “He has a zero dose; that means he has not been immunised before, and unfortunately this child now has polio. “The tendency of transmitting to other children around him, it is like an epidemic now; over 200 children are at risk of getting this polio. “So, what we are going to do now is to carry out a mop-up campaign, to see that we curtail the whole of Kabusa ward.’’ He observed that cases of polio in the FCT were from people who migrated to the territory from other places. According to Mohammed, once a child has paralysis it is irreversible. Mohammed said the board would carry out a mop up campaign in the area and its environs, to curtail the spread of the virus to neighbouring communities. He said more health workers would be involved in the mop up campaign, while traditional and religious leader would also collaborate to address the situation. He noted that there was only one primary health centre in the area but assured that another centre would be established to boost routine immunisation. Mohammed complained of cases of rejection by some residents. He said that out of 12 wards of AMAC, there were about nine high-risk wards because of influx of people to those areas. He said the board had a meeting with the WHO, UNICEF, AMAC, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, to discuss how the polio outbreak in the FCT could be addressed. He identified paucity of fund and inadequate vaccinators as some of the major problems affecting smooth immunisation coverage in the area. Mohammed noted that Nigeria had 96 per cent burden of polio in the whole world, with Afghanistan and Pakistan having only 4 per cent. He commended government for making the vaccines available, and urged residents to accept immunisation, saying, “prevention is better than cure”. Mohammed urged the Polio Emergency Operation Centre to collaborate with the board to address the issue. (NAN) http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/02/fct-records-fresh-outbreak-of-type-one-wild-polio/ |

so there is now an inverse proportionality between the money stolen and the number of year jail as punnishment! Thousand naira attracts 2 digits in years sentence, millions attracts a digit sentence while billions is just in months. |
taharqa: The right strategy is to handle it from all fronts: catch and expose the kingpins; degrade the ability of the so-calld footsoldiers to break pipelines and steal crude; improve the conditions of people surrounding the pipelines; and, deal with the continue Excess Market abroad for these stolen crude, etc. You treat the Demand and Supply sides together if you intend to really deal with d problem in a SUBSTAINABLE manner..... Already, work at home by Security Agencies, as startd by the article, has reducd Crude theft from 150,000bpd to 80,000bpd; what is needed to furda drive it downwards and hence deal with it in a Substainable way, is to block the foreign market for the stolen crude as work intensifies at home...which of the strategies above is GEJ applying? |
RMD-Robbing Millions for Deltans. So no be only politician sabi do that kind thing. Artiste self no wan gree. Little wonder 9ice was talking about politics. |
