Truth is, you are not mentally prepared for marriage. It has nothing to do with your age or the fact that you've got a good job and all that because life isn't a timetable . Your bf should have prepared you for it though by giving you hints, asking albeit jokingly what you'd feel if he asked you to marry him and all that before doing the whole proposal thingy.

As for those saying you need more time to explore life before getting married so you don't cheat, well they are entitled to their own opinion. But I know for sure that even if one were to be happily married with kids today and you were asked to choose a new life partner from a line up of thirty guys, before you count from the first guy to the 15th you'd see someone you could spend the rest of your life with and still be happy. So the exploring option seems lame to me.

Having said that, it might take the grace of God for your bf to swallow this and propose again to you. He might feel insecure for a long time to come even if you walked up to him and accepted his proposal right now. He'd always feel you accepted him as an afterthought or maybe you had someone else and it didn't work for you guys..so you're taking him as option B. You have a lotta work to do bae. If he accepts you back without holding this over your head, then I'd say he's a matured, ready for marriage and a keeper. Don't let all these NL gals snatch him from you to avoid stories that touch.

@OP Well, my little input is this: By being not ready, what do you mean exactly? Emotionally, Spiritually (if you are religious), Mentally (perhaps, you know little about what marriage is really all about). Marriage as I know it has to do with more than being a graduate with a well paying job (they are not less important though).

I have a hunch that this is the first guy you've ever been serious with. I don't know how people view marriage but to me, its not a thing to joke with! Since you're 21 and quite exposed, its safe to assume that you haven't actually lived your own life so what's the assurance that you won't get bored in less than 3 years into the marriage? Is he doing this in an attempt to cage you? I'm not even looking at it from your own perspective @OP, I'm addressing your "BF". He should've given you time to be sure that he's got you wholly before asking you to marry him. You're still young and beautiful, men will still crawl at your feet, what happens after you both are married and you suddenly realise you married the wrong guy due to teenage love or even youthful exuberance? Since you turned him down, you're obviously still searching for something (which he might be missing). If I were him, I would be thankful. Marrying the wrong spouse can be fatal in every sense of the word.

And to you @OP, a man's ego is the most sensitive part of him. Bruise it, and you've scarred him for life! You should've accepted his proposal since his friends were on ground to witness it instead of turning him down. By so doing, you've really shattered what's left of him and I don't blame him for reacting the way he did. Accepting it in their presence doesn't mean you can't call it off when you get back home while talking sense into him. That's where you erred.

Ask him to be patient. Time will tell.

He should have considered if you were ready which i believe should have come up in your conversations before deciding to propose.
Ask him if he is ready to wait if you accept his proposal.Let him give you about a year before marriage plans.
